Shelton, Greene Devils Blast Millington

BY WADE LITTLETON ASSISTANT SPORTS EDITOR

MURFREESBORO — When Greeneville needed a leader, Drew Shelton was happy to oblige.

Shelton knocked home three goals as the Greene Devils blasted Millington Central 6-0 in the quarterfinal round of the Class 2A soccer state tournament on Tuesday at the Richard Siegel Soccer Complex.

The match was scoreless through the first 10 minutes before the Devils erupted for three goals over the next seven minutes.

Shelton scored his first goal at 10:56 into the first half on a free kick from just outside the top right corner of the box, his 26th goal of the season.

At 12:43, Spencer Robinson knocked in a deflection by Millington keeper Dylan Chapman for a 2-0 lead.

At 16:57, Cooper Graham tapped in a saved header to make it 3-0.

Josue Castillo scored from 6 yards out at 34:56 to push Greeneville to a 4-0 lead at the half.

Shelton scored Greeneville’s two goals in the second half, first on a penalty kick at the 50:28 mark and then on a shot from the top of the box at the 55:00 mark.

Brady Quillen, Castillo and Brody Inscore each had an assist for the Devils.

Greeneville finished with 34 shots – 21 in the first half and 13 in the second.

“Whenever we get goals from multiple players, it’s always great so teams can’t always focus on one player,” said Greeneville coach Jerry Graham. “If they tend to shut one down, then another player tends to step up

North Greene Lady Huskies knew they would have their hands full against state-ranked Eagleville on Tuesday in the Class A state softball tournament at Starplex Field No. 4. That proved to be the case as the Lady Huskies gave up three home runs, then five more runs in the sixth inning to the Lady Eagles, who pinned a 10-0 six-inning loss on the Baileyton team.

“We knew coming in what we were facing,” said North Greene coach Danny Weems said. “(Eagleville is) really good and I knew what to expect out of them. They kind of did what I expected them to do. They got good swings on the ball, they’re really strong girls, they have an offseason workout program. They hit the ball with power.”

Junior Emmaline Whitt was first in the hit parade with a lead-off home run in the top of the first inning off losing pitcher Cambell Gaby.

In the third, after Whitt singled, sophomore Brinli Bain parked another ball over the fence for a 3-0 Eagleville lead. The fifth inning delivered more of the same as Bain hit her second two-run homer off Gaby for a 5-0 advantage. Whitt had her second hit of the game, a bloop single to lead off the inning before Bain’s blast.

The Eagles pushed across five runs off North Greene’s bullpen in the top of the sixth to make it 10-0.

Whitt finished 4-for-4 with a double, a homer and three RBI, while Bain was 4-for-4 with a double, two homers and five RBI. North Greene had three hits –two by Gaby, including a double, and a single by Anna Weems.
