United Way of Greene County COVID-19 Response April - August, 2020 Jon Lowery loads donations at Publix United Way of Greene County is ALL IN With COVID-19 Response United Way never stopped working and immediately began forming partnerships and gathering funds to support our community. During the last few weeks of March, United Way of Greene County met with agency staff, community leaders, and experts to determine the best way to help those affected by the pandemic. The three priorities identified were: • food for families with children out of school, • utility bill assistance, and • housing and eviction prevention. United Way Regional COVID-19 Relief Fund United Way of Greene County joined with 7 other East Tennessee United Ways and 1 United Way in Southwest Virginia to form the Regional COVID-19 Relief Fund and begin raising money to help residents of Greene County. Those funds were put to work in Greene County in April, May, and June. • United Way of Greene County purchased and distributed $5,250 in Food City gift certificates through the Greene County Schools Family Resource Center (150) and the Greeneville City Schools Family Resource Center (60). The certificates helped families with more than 400 children. • United Way of Greene County purchased an additional $4,375 in Food City gift certificates. Food gift certificates were distributed through the Foster Grandparent Program, the Boys & Girls Club, the Boy Scouts, the Children’s Center, the Hope Center, Tabernacle Mission Soup Kitchen, Mosheim Outreach, and Contact 211, helping many different types of families. • United Ways in Northeast Tennessee allocated $61,000 of their Regional Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia COVID-19 Relief Fund to the Upper East Tennessee
Human Development Authority's (UETHDA) Community Services program to prevent pandemic-affected families from sliding into homelessness. Of these funds, more than $10,000 will be used in Greene County. United Way of Greene County Partners with Greeneville Light & Power System United Way of Greene County and GLPS partnered on the Greene County COVID-19 Relief Fund for residential energy customers in Greene County. United Way of Greene County raised $15,000, which was matched by $15,000 from TVA. The fund specifically targets those residents whose income has been affected by the pandemic and supplements the other energy assistance programs in our area. Through August, the fund has helped 40 families, preventing disconnection of power. Working Together to Help Our Community In addition to providing the funding, United Way of Greene County has worked with our friends and partners to make life better for Greene County residents during the pandemic. EFSP – The federal Emergency Food and Shelter Program announced additional funding for Greene County for Phase CARES and Phase 39 for emergency food and housing assistance. United Way of Greene County provides administrative support and leadership to the Local Board, which allocated over $70,000 to the following local recipients: • Greeneville/Greene County Community Ministries – housing assistance • Northern Greene County Churches United in Love Ministry – food and housing • Change is Possible Domestic Violence Program – food and housing • Voices of Care – food assistance • Tabernacle Mission Soup Kitchen – food
assistance • Debusk VFD Rehabilitation Unit – food assistance Greene LEAF – United Way has partnered with our county schools’ educational foundation on several grant applications to fund virtual classroom devices and internet access. Publix – The Greeneville Publix asked its customers to purchase single rolls of toilet paper, hand sanitizer, and disposable masks for those less fortunate. To date, Publix customers have donated over 700 rolls of toilet paper. United Way of Greene County handles the distribution of the donations and has provided these supplies to the following organizations with more to come: • Voices of Care • Northern Greene County Churches United in Love Ministry • Mosheim Outreach • Boys & Girls Club • Holston United Methodist Home for Children Eastman – Eastman has donated 5,000 reusable masks to United Ways in northeast Tennessee, 500 to Greene County. United Way of Greene County is distributing those masks to its partner organizations. United Way of Tennessee – Many of our neighbors across the region who are working 40+ hours a week find themselves making too much to qualify for government assistance, but not enough to provide for their family’s basic needs. We call these households ALICE, which stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed. Commissioned by the United Ways of Tennessee, the latest compilation of ALICE data highlights the challenges these households face and the impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on those who need our help

The donations made to United Way of Greene County stay in Greene County. Only 1% of every dollar raised goes outside of the county each year to pay state and national dues.
IN 2019, WE MADE GREENE COUNTY A BETTER PLACE FOR THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE: • 10,280 households (29,938 individuals) received food, housing, and utility assistance. • 225 cancer patients received gas vouchers to get to treatments and nutritional supplement to support their recovery. • 64 Senior “volunteers” provided love and support to 434 special needs children. The low-income seniors received a minimal stipend to supplement their retirement. • 19 elderly and disabled adults received in-home assistance to help them remain independent and in their homes, saving their families, Greene County, and the state of Tennessee the additional expense of assisted living. • 12 weekly warm-water swim classes were offered to arthritis sufferers. • 3,510 monthly scholarships were awarded for member fees and youth programs at the local YMCA. • 19 youth and adults were diagnosed, treated, and educated for speech, language, hearing, and swallowing disorders.
• 371 individuals with employment barriers trained for or entered employment through occupational rehabilitation and employment assistance services and were effectively moved from public assistance to tax-paying citizens. • 483 Greene County boys and 170 adult leaders enjoyed Boy Scout leadership and development activities. When children in our community learn and demonstrate values of Scouting, they move from those NEEDING United Way program support to those PROVIDING that support. • 3,620 residents received mental health counseling, treatment, drug and alcohol abuse therapy, and crisis services, including 213 individuals who received 1,259 services worth $108,546.63 in charity care thanks to United Way support. • 205 homeless individuals had a warm place to stay and a hot meal. • 210 children from low-income families or single-parent homes received high-quality, three-star-rated daycare services at scholarship rates.
• 248 reported Greene County victims of child abuse and their non-offending caregivers were counseled and helped through the investigation and healing process. • 44 families (110 individuals) who were victims of home fires received emergency assistance and services, while more than 1,400 people received disaster information, instruction, and certifications from the American Red Cross. • 2,200 local at-risk school children received family outreach and support to aid in school readiness and success. • Volunteer emergency personnel with appropriate training and equipment responded to 36 medical calls, 365 motor vehicle accidents, 29 water rescues, 4 searches, 12 animal rescues, 1 structural rescue, and 4 farm accidents to assist local residents. The volunteer responders logged more than 7,500 hours. • 12 local volunteers provided court advocacy and support for 129 children in the justice system to help them get to safe, permanent homes.
• 230 victims of domestic violence received shelter, court advocacy, and rehousing services. • 153 seniors provided over 29,600 hours of volunteer service to 18 local non-profit organizations and government agencies. • 762 Greene County residents received information and referral for health and human service needs. • 242 local girls and 121 adult volunteer leaders enjoyed the youth development and leadership activities of the Girl Scouts. • 2,004 children participated in after-school activities and other programs of the Boys & Girls Club. • 472 calls related to poison ingestion were fielded from Greene County and callers received emergency instruction. • 49 teens spent over 1,557 hours in training classes on farm and food education, including preparing and operating food-based businesses and building skills for the food industry. • 300 individuals received weekly hot meals.
United Way funding generated an additional $791,041.00 in matching state and federal grants for health and human service needs in Greene County.

United Way Pillar Society 2019 25th Anniversary The United Way Pillar Society is a recognition program for individuals and households who make personal gifts of $500 or more annually to the campaign. United Way leadership givers contribute more than 35% of all campaign dollars raised each year. In Greene County, the Pillar Society is chaired by Tom Garland, Sr., Terry Leonard, and Scott Niswonger. The six giving levels are: The Alexis de Tocqueville Society - $10,000 and more; The Heritage Society - $7,500 - $9,999; The President’s Society - $5,000 - $7,499; The Governor’s Society $2,500 - $4,999; The Sentry’s Society - $1,000 - $2,499; The Founder’s Society - $500 - $999. THE ALEXIS DE TOCQUEVILLE SOCIETY Alexis de Tocqueville, an aristocratic Frenchman, came to the United States in 1831 to study the penal system. As a result of his travels and interviews with leading politicians, lawyers, bankers, and settlers, he wrote the two-volume Democracy in America which was published in 1835 and 1840. Perhaps his most important observation was that Americans helped each other in time of need. He saw volunteerism as a way of life that was typically American. He wrote, “When an American asks for the cooperation of his fellow citizens, it is seldom refused; and I have often seen it afforded spontaneously and with great good will.” United Way Worldwide chose the name Alexis de Tocqueville when forming this special group of donors who contribute $10,000 or more to the annual campaign because of Tocqueville’s admiration of the spirit of volunteerism he discovered in America.
