Kenzo Takada dresses the Mah Jong
Free spirited and audacious designer Kenzo Takada, known as "the most Parisian of Japanese fashion designers," has designed an exceptional collection of fabrics and ceramics for Roche Bobois. To dress the Mah Jong sofa, he drew inspiration from traditional kimonos of the NĹ? theater. He reinterpreted the motifs and colors, creating delicate and sophisticated harmonies that symbolize the three times of the day: Asa (morning), Hiru (noon), and Yoru (evening).

FRONT RUNNER Many people dismissed Kim Kardashian as a here-today-gonetomorrow reality-TV star in 2010, but Ocean Drive knew better when we put her on our cover.
REALITY CHECK M ARDASHIAN TOOK THE COVETED 17TH-ANNIVERSARY COVER OF OCEAN DRIVE JUST AS SHE WAS ON THE VERGE OF MEGASTARDOM. BY JARED SHAPIRO
It’s no secret that in Miami, we love to party. It’s why every year we celebrate Ocean Drive’s anniversary, no matter the number. But this upcoming year will be the biggest of them all— number 25!—so we’re spending the next few months looking back at some amazing covers from years past. One that stands out? Our 2010 anniversary cover, featuring a thenreality star and now one of
40 OCEANDRIVE.COM
the planet’s biggest stars, Kim Kardashian. “To write off Kim Kardashian as a mere reality-TV babe would be missing the point of this multimedia juggernaut…” reads the story, written almost eight years ago. It’s hard to believe that since then, she’s graced the cover of Vogue, met presidents and world leaders, and amassed a nearly billion-dollar empire. Kardashian and her
family have long had a history in Miami, from opening their Dash boutique right here on Collins Avenue to filming multiple seasons of Keeping Up with the Kardashians and spin-offs like Kourtney and Khloé Take Miami, attending Art Basel, taking tons of vacations, and even making club appearances (including one at the subsequent Ocean Drive cover party at The Delano).
Though she did tell us in the cover story, “I don’t drink, but my sisters force me to because they think I’m uptight.” In addition to Kardashian, the 2010 magazine was chock-full of VIPs, celebrities, and socialites. The social photographs featured some very familiar faces—though their jobs and hairlines have since changed. Businessmanturned-president Donald
Trump posed at Mar-aLago, DJ Ruckus spun records at local fashion boutiques (he’s now an in-demand DJ flying all around the world), a young rapper named Drake posed in the clubs, Dennis Rodman and Pamela Anderson hung out together. It was Miami as only it could be back then, just as this Ocean Drive is Miami as it is right now. Happy anniversary!

THE MIAMI FASHION FILM FESTIVAL RETURNS FOR ITS FIFTH YEAR, TRANSFORMING THE CITY INTO A HUB FOR BOTH FASHION AND FILM FANATICS. BY ALEJANDRA TORRES
Both forms of creative visual expression, fashion and film have long been intertwined. Each year, the Miami Fashion Film Festival recognizes and celebrates this relationship with a four-day weekend of special screenings, seminars, and soirées, hosted at Miami Dade College and the Miami Fashion Institute. This month marks the
42 OCEANDRIVE.COM
festival’s fifth anniversary, so expect a bigger and better event, and a slew of dazzling à la mode films. Past festivals have seen premieres of notable fashioncentric flicks, including Yves Saint Laurent, the 2014 biopic delving into the life and career of the famed French designer. Similarly, the documentary Dior and I gave an intimate look into
the creation of Raf Simons’s first collection for Christian Dior. Guests can expect the same elevated artistry at this year’s showcase. “We are thankful to continue introducing the best in fashion film from all around the world for thefifth year,” says festival founder Grace Castro. “Each year, the bar for fashion film is raised higher with talented
filmmakers creating a new narrative for the genre.” This year’s roster includes more than 60 international filmmakers, like David McIlvride, who’s debuting Riverblue, a stunning 5K journey into the harsh reality of clothing manufacturing that’s destroying rivers on a global scale, and Sophia Banks, who is reimagining the fairy-tale story of
Cinderella with modern fashion and fierceness. These are just a few who will debut films, participate in interactive seminars, and host talks about fashion design, filmmaking, technology, and more. Watch it all unreel September 20 to 24. Call 786-440-6091 or visit miafff.org for schedule and information.

steamy summer days start to give way to fall and light breezes. (It’s still beach weather, though—another point for Miami!) And as families return from summer trips to Aspen, South America, Europe, and even the Hamptons, the exciting buzz of the Miami “season” returns, and it doesn’t die down until the following summer. Adding to that buzz, no doubt, is this year’s September cover star Nina Dobrev, who’s transitioned into postVampire Diaries life quite nicely with her film Flatliners, in theaters September 29. Her grace and beauty are a perfect fit for any fashion issue, but it’s her support of the oceans and saving sharks that makes her the ultimate fit for Ocean Drive. As you can see, there’s much to celebrate in Miami besides just art and our celebrity covers, though I can’t believe we are about 90 days away from Art Basel Miami Beach already! So get ready, Miamians. September is just the beginning of the action in the Magic City!

Recently I was scrolling through Instagram and stopped on an image that gave me an immediate jolt of confusion: Jeffrey Koons’s larger-than-life “Seated Ballerina” at Rockefeller Center in New York City. Could it be? I remember this past Art Basel, going to the reception for Mr. Koons at Oceana Bal Harbour where his “Seated Ballerina” sculpture (worth several million dollars, by the way) would be permanently moved as part of the residences’ ownership. I even took a selfie in front of it! Certainly, New York didn’t one-up us. But there it was in the middle of Rockefeller Center, Jeff Koons’s 45-foot-high inflatable, nylon sculpture…Wait—inflatable? Nylon? That explains it. The NYC version— scaled up from the original in the artist’s “Antiquity” series—was only temporary (the installation seeks to raise awareness for organizations like the International Centre for Missing & Exploited Children) and was full of air. A balloon! The real version, made of mirror-polished stainless steel with transparent color coating, still sits front and center at the entrance to the new Bal Harbour luxury residence on the water. Phew! The NYC-versus-Miami conversation is always heated when it comes to arts, culture, sports, food, real estate, and even weather. As a former New Yorker, I know very well that both cities have winning and losing arguments. But in this specific case, with the original piece of work by Jeffrey Koons permanently in the 305, Miami comes out on top. South Florida also gets the win in September, when the hot and

LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER
Although summer is coming to an end, we have plenty to look forward to as the calendar changes to September. Fall means hot new fashion trends, culinary innovations, and a variety of events to be enjoyed under the bright Miami sun. While the temperature may not drop dramatically, you will detect a difference in the atmosphere as we gear up for the thrilling happenings around town—starting with food. This month, the Magic City revels in Miami Spice, an annual promotion with restaurants in every neighborhood in the 305 offering creative three-course menus prepared by our world-famous chefs. My suggestion? Head to one (or all) of the dining destinations at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach for some mouthwatering cuisine and cocktails (paired with spectacular views, no less). You won’t regret it. Besides filling up on top-notch fare, it’s also time to stock your closet with the latest and greatest styles. We can always count on Miami for the best fashion throughout the year, and this season we’ll welcome even more exciting additions. Up north,

Aventura Mall is readying a threelevel expansion that will include a new roster of stores and restaurants. And of course, the ever-growing Miami Design District continues to provide us with highly coveted pieces from the world’s top fashion houses. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for some fashionable pop-ups hosted exclusively #atMDD. Speaking of style, we’re thrilled to feature actress and fashionista Nina Dobrev on our cover. The brunette beauty (who will star in the sci-fi thriller Flatliners—out September 29) is just as stunning on the inside as she is on the outside, and we’re excited to be able to share her story with you. So whether you’re noshing on food from our award-winning chefs or going on a shopping spree at our on-trend boutiques, there’s no doubt Miami is the place to be this month. I hope to see you around town…

James photographed the confectionary delights at Cindy Lou’s Cookies and famed chef Michael Schulson’s inventive new Japanese eatery, Monkitail. What’s the most challenging aspect of food photography? Not eating too much. What was it like shooting at Cindy Lou’s Cookies? A sign saying cookies and another saying love hung behind Cindy [Kruse] and [partner] Eric [Paige] as I stepped into the bakery. Imagine that feeling and then top it with the smell of cookies.

Randel gives us a behind-thecurtain look at the Diplomat resort’s Monkitail through an interview with chef Michael Schulson in “No Monkeying Around.” What did you enjoy most about your visit to Monkitail? I write about a lot of restaurants, and few of them offer something original. Monkitail’s robatayaki menu is a cool, new take on an “old” technique. What do we need to try? The “smoked” Monkitail cocktail was like nothing I’ve had before. I don’t even like bourbon but could have sipped this all night.

What would it be like to walk in Jennifer Lopez’s shoes? Figuratively speaking, of course—no one can match the multitalented singer, dancer, actress, and fashion designer. But you literally can walk in the budding shoe designer’s footwear this season. The Giuseppe for Jennifer Lopez haute celebrity collection makes

the perfect transition from summer to fall in the Magic City. Booties, stiletto sandals, and over-the-knee boots—all named for Lopez’s favorite roles in television and film (last season she used the names of family members)—comprise the sexy lineup. Each shoe also features crystals, the fil rouge, or common thread, of the collection. Much like the duo’s first go-around, the second collaboration embodies both of their aesthetics, spotlighting designer Giuseppe Zanotti’s expert craftsmanship and Lopez’s undeniable red-carpet glamour. Take, for example, the Gertie bootie, named for Lopez’s role in Jersey Girl. Covered in Swarovski crystals, these showstoppers come in eye-catching maroon and everyday black. Echoing the actress’s role in Maid in Manhattan, the Marisa over-the-knee boot works for those who want to lace up their look with a sparkle of dangling crystals. There’s also the Harlee, a feminine stiletto sandal that’s a welcome addition to any daring fall wardrobe, straight out of TV’s Shades of Blue. You’ll be the talk of the town as the fall social season kicks off. $1,495–$2,795. Bal Harbour Shops, 9700 Collins Ave., 305-868-0133; giuseppezanottidesign.com

SIMPLY IRRESISTIBLE A POWERFUL TIMEPIECE TREND, SIMPLICITY IS TEMPTING LOCAL TASTEMAKERS THIS SEASON WITH STRAIGHTFORWARD STYLE AND ENGINEERING EXCELLENCE. BY ALDOUS TUCK
“Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication” is a design philosophy most often associated with Leonardo da Vinci. Though the Renaissance man preceded even the earliest watches, this principle has stood the test of time and been fully embraced by Swiss watchmakers. This season, clean lines, uncomplicated dials, and straightforward materials are everywhere and speaking to those who crave the uncluttered. These finely crafted timepieces will be making the right style statement in the boardroom and on the town for years to come. CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the first precious-metal Royal Oak watch, Audemars Piguet has produced a series of Royal Oak Extra-Thin ($55,400) versions in 18k yellow gold. The stamped sunburst design on the slate-gray dial was inspired by gold nuggets, and the L.U.C. 96.09-L self-winding movement offers a 65-hour power reserve. Westime, Brickell City Centre, 701 S. SWIM CAPITAL
While the 305 plays host to celebrities and starlets yearround, Miami Swim Week brings the globe-trotting glitterati to our Magic City all at once for seven days of presentations, previews, and exclusive parties. This year, that meant sitting front row next to Tyson Beckford while watching swimsuit model superstars like Joy Corrigan and Sofia Jamora strut the Funkshion and SwimMiami runways; shopping the latest sunglass styles alongside Gossip Girl star and fashion icon Leighton Meester; and popping Champagne with Leonardo DiCaprio at the South Beach hot spot Doheny Room at The Delano. Even reality TV star Brody Jenner returned to man the ones and twos for his annual Swim Week bash at the 24/7 showclub E11EVEN. If you missed out on the excitement, don’t fret. Ocean Drive recounts the latest and greatest swim designs and beachwear brands shown at this year’s extravaganza. THROWING SHADES
Miami is famous for its bright, bold hues, and this year’s colorful collections didn’t disappoint. AU NATUREL APPREHENSIVE ABOUT TRYING FACIAL FILLERS? MIAMI’S DR. RIAN MAERC S TESTS THEM ON HIMSELF FIRST...
Dr. Rian Maercks’s (inset) approach of aesthetic facial balancing uses fillers strategically placed throughout the face to create a natural, youthful— and lasting—look.
84 OCEANDRIVE.COM
“I always had a romantic notion of becoming a doctor, but was always a creative thinker,” says Dr. Rian A. Maercks, founder and medical director of The Maercks Institute in Miami. After earning his medical degree from Duke University, Dr. Maercks found that through plastic surgery he could combine reasoning with creativity and aesthetics. “A plastic surgeon has to analyze and think about the best solution for each unique patient,” he explains. “It’s really advanced surgical problem-solving with aesthetics on top as icing on the cake.” Today, the in-demand physician has earned accolades from the International Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery for his innovations, including cold subfascial breast augmentation—a procedure providing long-term control of breast shape and appearance—and aesthetic facial balancing, which uses the body’s own fat to rejuvenate the face. Much of the doctor’s aesthetic ingenuity can be credited to testing out his practices on himself (and posting them to YouTube). Case in point: In 2013, Dr. Maercks injected 35 syringes of dermal filler into his own face to show the public that his technique of strategically placing fillers throughout the face will provide a natural look, instead of the overdone, dreaded “sausage lip.” “I haven’t retouched my face, and I am really happy with the way it has evolved because I look a lot younger and more balanced than I did five years ago,” he says. “Fillers have revolutionized our ability to create natural, healthy, and beautiful outcomes.” The Maercks Institute of Miami, 4500 Biscayne Blvd., Miami, 305328-8256; themaercks institute.com

MANE MAN HAIRSTYLIST-TO-THE-STARS DANNY JELACA HAS MORE THAN A PAIR OF SCISSORS UP HIS SLEEVE THIS SEPTEMBER.
Tell us about your new salon, opening at the Miami Beach Marina. I’m opening a one-stop shop [this September], all very luxurious and high-end. We’re doing a wide array of medical spa services. We’ll [also] have a manicure/pedicure salon, a fullservice O.P Makeup Studio, and a private spa treatment room. Everything will be illuminated. The color station is going to look like a floating bar. What is it like styling top models like Heidi Klum and Lily Aldridge? Never a dull moment. On the way, I’m fistpumping, getting myself riled up. But I treat them like any other person. I never hound them down for pictures, but by the end they’re taking selfies with me. You’re competing on a new show, American Beauty Star. I’m one of the top 12 celebrity stylists in the country competing for a title. It’s a new challenge for me to see how far I can be pushed... I can’t wait to see what I’m made of. You also have a product line in the works… I’ve recognized that a lot of my clients are jetsetters. I’m coming out with an all-climate control line to take you from dry to humid weather. What do you love about working in Miami? The city has loved me back the way I’ve loved it. Miami has its own style, vibe, pulse. I feel like I identify with everything—the sex appeal, the music, the Latin vibe, the progression of the city. 300 Alton Road, Ste. 100, Miami Beach, 305-6049696; dannyjelaca.com

SHOW TIME! AS FOOTBALL SEASON KICKS OFF, MIAMI DOLPHINS FANS HAVE A LOT TO LOOK FORWARD TO—ON AND OFF THE FIELD.

Center Mike Pouncey (51) and the rest of the Dolphins are fired up for this season, while DeVante Parker, Kenny Stills, and Jarvis Landry are a receiving corps the fans can get excited about.
Every football team looks like a sure winner in early September, but the high hopes of Miami Dolphins fans this year aren’t just wishful thinking. With a 10-6 record last season (ending with an incredible 9-2 run), a playoff berth for the first time in eight years, the return of Jay Ajayi and Jarvis Landry, and the late off-season signing of quarterback Jay Cutler, the Dolphins are poised to make waves in an AFC East that could be ripe for the taking. With out-of-conference home games against the Oakland Raiders, Denver Broncos, Tennessee Titans, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, this will undoubtedly be a fun season, says Jason Jenkins, senior vice president of communications and community affairs for the Dolphins and Hard Rock Stadium. “After our first playoff appearance since 2008, fans are excited about the upcoming season,” says Jenkins. “We have a great home schedule and a team that is supremely focused.” Adam Gase returns for his second season as head coach, joined by Mike Tannenbaum, executive vice president of football operations, and Chris Grier, general manager.

Can’t-Miss Events: In addition to hosting the Dolphins, University of Miami football games, the Orange Bowl, and El Clásico Miami, Hard Rock Stadium will welcome Super Bowl LIV in 2020, marking the 100th anniversary of the NFL, plus an array of worldclass events.

Hard Rock Stadium will unveil Phase III of its $500 million-plus renovation, with a new club level and redesigned parking.
But the action on the field won’t be the only thing generating excitement. After three years, Hard Rock Stadium is nearing completion of a massive $500 million renovation, funded by owner Stephen Ross. The biggest elements of Phase III are a complete redesign of the venue’s landscaping and parking lots, as well as modernized suites (147 of them to be exact), which were fully refurbished with a host of luxury amenities—creating the ultimate setting to watch not just football, but any event at the stadium. The executive suites have between 10 and 50 seats, along with air-conditioning, multifeed sound systems, refrigerators, ice makers, and private telephone services, while attendants provide personal service during the game. Joining the suite life at Hard Rock Stadium is the luxury real estate firm G&G Business Developments, which has introduced an exclusive space called The Nine, Hosted by Aston Martin Residences at 300 Biscayne Boulevard Way. Featuring an open-air suite between the 30-yard lines, access to a private club designed by the Rockwell Group, complimentary car service, a private entrance, and a dedicated game-day concierge, The Nine offers guests a one-of-a-kind experience—and perhaps the swankiest way you’ll ever watch a football game. 347 Don Shula Dr., Miami Gardens, 305-9438000; hardrockstadium.com

“I just can’t wait to walk my dog on the beach,” says a beaming Louis Aguirre when asked about his return to Miami. “That’s what I’ve missed the most.” For three years, the former Deco Drive host’s absence has been strongly felt, since he jetted off to LA to join The Insider. After a successful stint cohosting the national
entertainment-news show, Aguirre is coming back to Miami, now at WPLG Channel 10—where he worked when he was 24 years old—as an anchor and reporter. “This is a quintessential full-circle moment,” he says. “I’m not just coming home to Miami; I’m coming home to the place that gave birth to my career.” The new position also
marks Aguirre’s return to hard news, which he’s very excited about. “I’ve had so much fun covering entertainment for the past 18 years, but I’ve noticed my personal focus has shifted,” he says. “The lightbulb moment came when I was in Miami when Fidel Castro died. I went to Little Havana and saw my fellow journalists out there, and I thought, Wow, I wish I
could tell that story.” And now he can. Starting this month, Aguirre is anchoring the 4:30 and 5:30 pm newscasts and reporting at 11 pm. “These are the stories I feel most passionate about,” he says. “I’ve always had this incredibly strong faith that life will push you in the right direction. I’m looking forward to this next chapter.”

MAGIC CITY MUSE WITH LOOKS THAT COULD KILL PLUS AN ART HISTORY DEGREE, ELITE BOMBSHELL ANNIE GUSTAFSSON IS MIAMI’S NEXT TOP MODEL.
How were you discovered? In the summer of 2011 when I was at Florida International University, I used to go see jazz on South Beach at the Van Dyke Café, which doesn’t exist anymore. That’s where I was discovered by the then-director of Elite Models. Best part about modeling? Traveling. Every time I go to a new city for work and I have a free morning or evening, I try to hit a museum. Who inspires you? Cara Delevingne. She’s very honest with how she portrays herself; she’s silly and always posting funny faces on Instagram. If you weren’t a model… I always thought about becoming an art history professor. Fitness routine? I try and keep it rich in variety. I like kickboxing at SoBe Kick (1860 West Ave., Miami Beach, 305-397-8484; sobekick.com), and FlyBarre (1919 Purdy Ave., Miami Beach, 305-763-8227; flywheelsports.com). I’ve never been as healthy in my entire life as I am now. Cheat meal? I’m vegan, so I love Bunnie Cakes (2322 NE 2nd Ave., Miami, 786-268-9790; bunniecakes.com). I like the little bites! Thoughts on social media? I wouldn’t post anything that I wouldn’t want my mom to see. That’s the rule I live by. @annie.gustafsson

If you’re looking for someone to root for in the summer concert tour competition, Enrique Iglesias can be your hero, and Pitbull, too, as they return to their hometown of Miami for the second time in three months, bringing the heat to AmericanAirlines Arena on September 30. Co-headlining one of the biggest tours in the country, the duo raked in $18 million from their first 15 shows, which puts them at number two on the list of 2017’s topgrossing summer tours, behind only Sting. Supplying both massive dance beats and swoony ballads, the pop stars are playing all the hits, including “Fireball,” “Culo,” and “Feel This Moment” from Pitbull and “Bailando,” “Escape,” and “Bailamos” from Iglesias. It’s an all-night, on-your-feet affair that fans are sure to be raving about for years. And for those whose taste leans more toward rock, 96 OCEANDRIVE.COM
Iglesias has been known to toss in a few covers as well, like “Seven Nation Army” and “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door.” Longtime friends, Pitbull and Iglesias have toured together before and collaborated on the hit “Messin’ Around.” As their star power grew, the bromance blossomed—no doubt based partly on their shared love for Miami: Iglesias grew up here and, with longtime partner Anna Kournikova, remains a resident of the city, upgrading mansions every so often. Pitbull, of course, is Mr. 305—a first-generation CubanAmerican born in Miami. Together, Pitbull, Iglesias, and about 20,000 of their closest friends are primed for an unforgettable show. Beach, and Orlando. Will the train change the city? It’s huge. With the growth of downtown Miami, a lot of people will be taking it. You can live up north and work in Miami, or vice versa. There’s a lot of Heat fans in Orlando, so you might get some [traveling] down to catch a game and get back to Orlando at a decent hour. Part of your goal was giving people jobs, right? I have a lot of family and friends who just need an opportunity. They probably made mistakes in the past, and it’s not easy to come by a job. They have the right heart and mind-set, and I want to give them the opportunity to reach their goals. How much of this is an investment versus an after-basketball job? I can’t do anything halfheartedly, so I wanted it to be something I could be involved with when I retire. I stop by my stores once a week. We’ll land at three or four in the morning from a West Coast trip, and
I’ll stop by my 24-hour Starbucks. I’m making sure everything is going well and checking on my crew. Who has influenced your business career? One would be my business partner; she’s very inspirational. I’d also have to say Dwyane Wade, a very close friend of mine. I’ve always admired him for being willing to do something different. And my business manager, Sylvester King, is probably the most intelligent person I know. He pushes me to want to continue to educate myself. Do you see yourself in basketball in any way after retirement? My hope is to be somewhat involved on an organizational level with the Heat. I’ll continue with my business ventures. And I have three kids. My oldest son is a football player; he’s a freshman at the University of Toledo on a scholarship. Elijah, 6, is athletic and very active, and my 10-year-old plays travel baseball. A lot of things will take priority once I walk away from playing basketball.

It’s no exaggeration to say that David Coba was born to run a beauty business. “My brother [Josh] and I used to sit and play in the middle of the salon at two years old,” Coba says of his father’s shop in Aventura. While Coba and his siblings observed the daily rhythms of the grueling beauty business, he also took note of what he would do differently, if given the chance. “Growing up in the industry had a lot of value,” Coba says. “I loved that it was my dad’s thing, but I also got a glimpse of things I didn’t

Chef Michael Schulson, who made his name at New York’s Buddakan and owns some of the hottest restaurants in Philadelphia, was ready to expand to Miami a few years ago, after his Philadelphia landlord Tony Goldman introduced him to the burgeoning Wynwood area. “I always loved Miami, but I didn’t want to open in South Beach,” Schulson says. “So I’d been waiting for the right opportunity.” When Hollywood’s Diplomat resort approached the restaurateur, he was dazzled by its extraordinary $100 million renovation plans: “The Diplomat is an iconic hotel, so to get into the Florida market through something like this was kind of a no-brainer.” The new restaurant, Monkitail— like his award-winning Double Knot in Philly—offers a modern take on a traditional Japanese izakaya, a casual gastropub serving small plates. The menu opens with a host of cold appetizers, like the sophisticated, wonderfully salty toro caviar on toast; a variety of sushi rolls, including the perfectly balanced bigeye tuna rolled in warm rice (a Schulson signature) and topped with avocado purée; and fresh sashimi, like the buttery golden-eye snapper. The experience at Monkitail is a departure from that of the region’s typical beach-inspired restaurant. “I’m all about the ability to transport,” Schulson says, “bringing somebody into Monkitail and having an experience that could be in New York, Singapore, or London.” In addition to the 200-seat restaurant, Monkitail houses Nokku, a discreet cocktail lounge with private karaoke rooms. “These days, dinner out has become the entertainment all by itself,” Schulson says, “so we’ve created a place for people to go after dinner.” Karaoke or not, a meal at this memorable eatery will undoubtedly have you singing about your supper. 3555 S. The art of the perfect cookie is serious business—just ask Cindy Kruse, who recently opened her Cindy Lou’s Cookies storefront in Little River. Mastering a balance of flavor, texture, and temperature has been her life’s work since graduating from Boston University’s Hotel & Restaurant Management program and joining the pastry kitchen at the Culinary Institute of America. She’s worked with some of the best in the business, including Emeril Lagasse, Jean-Georges Vongerichten, and the late Charlie Trotter. “You never look at food again in the same way. In the end, being a chef is not just what you did, it’s who you were,” she says of her experiences. It was in 2006 that Kruse’s former boss in Las Vegas, businessman Don Soffer, asked her if she wanted to move to Miami to help in the renovation of a hotel he’d just bought—the Fontainebleau
Cofounders and life partners Cindy Lou and Eric Paige happily get their hands dirty at work.
Miami Beach. The rest is history. Today, Kruse’s work revolves around her shop, custom orders for pies and cakes, and being part of Miami’s expanding artisanal community. While most of Miami is familiar with the pastries Kruse has been making for Panther Coffee, it’s her cookies that capture her vivacious and warm personality. The classic chocolate chip might be the most popular, but it’s the coconut chocolate chip (with pecans) that embodies
cookie supremacy. “[It’s] sweet and salty, crispy on the outside and chewy in the center, comforting, chocolatey, and delicious!” Kruse says. Her creativity goes beyond the usual set of flavors, with a rotating menu featuring offerings like the Quesito—a sugar cookie filled with cream cheese frosting and rolled in sanding sugar. As Kruse cheerfully puts it, “[I’m] just trying to make this world a better place, one cookie at a time.” 7320 NE 2nd Ave., Miami, 305-456-8585; cindylouscookies.com

PAULA’S KITCHEN HELL’S KITCHEN ALUM PAULA DASILVA WILL TRANSPORT YOUR TASTE BUDS AROUND THE WORLD WITH HER LATEST CULINARY CONCEPT, ARTISAN BEACH HOUSE. BY ALEJANDRA TORRES
clockwise from top left: Octopus with vadouvan carrots, yogurt, and cilantro sauce; Paula DaSilva; the outside patio overlooks Haulover Inlet and the ocean; the Artisan Beach House bar. below: Roasted monkfish to share.
What was your inspiration for the menu? It’s globally inspired. I wanted the menu to be a little bit of all of my travels and a compilation of some of my favorite foods from those destinations. Favorite dish? If I had to pick one, I would say the octopus. We do it with an Indian inspiration, so it’s different than the Mediterranean influence that is more common. Guilty pleasure? Our chocolate chip cookies. We bake everything in-house, and every time a fresh batch of cookies comes out of the oven, I stand there thinking, “Is there a batch that didn’t come out perfectly round that we need to eat?” What makes Artisan Beach House a dining destination? Three things: One is the view with the ocean. The second is the service. And of course, the food. It’s nothing fancy or over-the-top; it’s very simple and we use great ingredients. I want people to say, “Wow, this is really good and unexpected.” Biggest lesson you learned on Hell’s Kitchen? When you think you can’t do any more, you can. Monasterio. He developed new techniques in both aesthetics and craniofacial surgery early in his career. He followed his fellowship spending individualized time with the worlds masters in Western Europe, Central and South America before returning home to Miami to develop what has become his brand: individualized, aesthetically tuned and artful interventions. When asked why there are so many of these strange faces around, Dr. Maercks replies “its all about the money.” “Most practitioners rely on marketing and social networking to develop a name and try to run a business. They may or may not be well trained but most practitioners out there have never really taken time to reflect on or understand aesthetics.”
Plastic Surgery, About Face! In a time when we see the most disastrous looking faces and bodies on celebrities, the wealthy and social elite, a new direction and art is being forged by one of the newest faces of excellence in Miami. Glance through the social photography in society magazines of Miami, Los Angeles and New York or just turn on the television and you may find unnatural distorted and age indeterminate faces and bodies. Well, about face, the polar opposite is being artfully delivered at one of the most elite plastic surgery practices in America.
Dr. Maercks’ interventions are incredibly disparate from mainstream procedures. He has basically created a new language with which to communicate with patients. ‘Aesthetic Facial Balancing’ is what Maercks calls his technique for volumetric restoration of the face. This means that with either hyaluronic acid or the body’s own natural fat, Dr. Maercks uses his artistic insights to create shapes and patterns that are immediately recognized by the perceiver’s brain as beautiful, young and happy. Do not go to the Maercks Institute and ask for a naso-labial fold fill or a lip plump up unless you want to hear a deconstruction of aesthetics and current concepts and an education on facial subunits and the psychophysiology of perception. No joke, this fine artist turned philosopher turned plastic surgeon is proud of both his concepts and results, rightfully so. Patients who receive Maercks’ Aesthetic Facial Balancing look untouched and completely natural, sometimes spouses are left wondering why their partner has such a glow and appears well rested and happy. What is the secret? “Observation, judgement, aesthetic understanding and respect for nuance, even the tiniest” Maercks replies.
At The Maercks Institute, Dr. Maercks provides full spectrum face breast and body care from noninvasive energy “Patients who receive Maercks’ interventions to facelifts breast lift and augmentation. He Aesthetic Facial Balancing is also becoming the go to name for revising unaesthetic look untouched and completely breast augmentations with his devastatingly beautiful ColdSubfascial™ breast augmentations and revisions that often natural, sometimes spouses are appear more natural than the patients original untouched left wondering why their partner form. What’s missing at the Maercks Institute? That’s has such a glow and appears easy- there is no marketing of heavily advertised products or devices, most of which Dr. Maercks will explain should well rested and happy.” be avoided at all cost. There is no nurse consultant guiding you through surgical options and no para-practitioners delivering care. With Dr. Maercks patients simply get the undivided attention Dr. Maercks had the distinguished honor of being the last fellow to receive of an incredible physician with both the talent and dedication to make his mentorship from the great and now late, Fernando Ortiz-Monasterio. Dr. patients shine. Ortiz-Monasterio was one of the fathers of modern craniofacial surgery and aesthetics. The thoughts and ideals of the great FOM, as he is affectionately Dr. Rian A. Maercks offers limited private consultations at The Maercks Institute, 4500 called, are carried on in the art that Dr. Maercks has developed. Maercks’ Biscayne Boulevard Suite 104, in Miami’s beautiful Design District by appointment hunger for elite skills and training began long before his time with Ortiz- only. For scheduling contact (305) 328-8256 or Dr.Rian@RianMaercksMD.com. Dr. Rian A. Maercks, the founder and sole practitioner of The Maercks Institute Miami, is turning things around for those lucky enough to know about his work. Maercks, a Miami native, sought out the best experience and training internationally and stateside to return with a novel concept of plastic surgery that is foreign to most interventions and practices today. “From the instant I opened my first office I knew the practice would be about the individual patient and everything had to be art.” Unfortunately the role of aesthetics, artistry and a doctorly role have little place in todays “fast-food plastic surgery” world.
Dr. Maercks conducts exclusive private consultations at The Maercks Institute located just outside of Miami’s bustling Design District. Scheduling can be arranged by contacting through www.TheMaercksInstitute.com or calling (305) 328-8256.

FLYING BACK
and forth from Canada to NYC to LA, shooting TV shows, feature films and magazine covers, working out (she recently signed on as an ambassador for Reebok and Les Mills), saving sharks, and squeezing in an occasional night out, the living, breathing world for Nina Dobrev is hardly as carefree and glamorous as it seems. “I have been jet-setting like a maniac the last few months. It’s hard to keep track anymore,” says the 28-year-old actress. Later this month she stars in Flatliners, a sci-fi thriller about medical students who, intrigued by what lies beyond life, experiment by stopping their hearts, triggering near-death experiences. “I had so much fun playing this character and kind of playing my first adult role in a professional sense.” It is a departure of sorts, after breaking onto the scene in cult-classic school drama Degrassi: The Next Generation, followed by the supernatural Vampire Diaries, which catapulted her to TV stardom. But today, Dobrev continually proves there’s no role (in acting or real life) that she can’t conquer. You’re taking improv classes at the UCB—for fun or career? I’ve always loved improv and I do it day to day and in my work, but I haven’t done formal classes since I was in theater school. I wanted to brush up on it, both professionally and personally, to be on my toes and keep flexing that muscle, because if you stop using it, it atrophies. Your dog Maverick is a “doctor-certified emotional support animal.” She seems so important in your life. She is a bundle of joy and her resting position looks like she’s smiling and it makes me so happy to have that energy around me all the time. She’s cuddly, cute, fun, and makes my heart happy. I can barely remember life without her. I did have another bundle. My cat, who passed away a couple months ago, was the other light in my life and I miss her every single day. I guess I need to always have a furry friend. Let’s go way back. When you were young, you trained 4 hours a day, 6 days a week as a gymnast, but made the choice instead to be an actress. I was getting to that age where it was the point of no return. I knew I wasn’t going to go to the Olympics and that level of competitiveness, so I had to make the choice. I didn’t know it at the time, but it was definitely great training for the path that I did choose [because of] the regimen, determination, and persistence that you have to have. It prepared me for the rejection, and [taught me] to keep going further and working hard, to not take no for an answer. I grew thick skin in gymnastics and even thicker skin as an actress. Were you able to do any crazy gymnastics poses? If I was on my knees, I’d be able to roll onto my stomach and then my feet would go over my head and in front of my eyes and I could keep my feet in front of my eyes and do split leaps and all these crazy things. You have so much flexibility because your limbs and your bones are Jell-O at a young age. How did your humble Canadian upbringing influence you? I moved around a lot. My parents grew up in Bulgaria, and I was born and lived there for a very short amount of time before we moved to Canada. Every summer we’d go back to Bulgaria and do a lot of road trips to Turkey and Romania and all the neighboring countries, so I definitely got the travel bug young. I didn’t have a privileged life, but I had the privilege of experiencing many cultures and meeting people from all walks of life.
As an immigrant to Canada who has now come to America, how do you feel about the current political climate? I keep expecting to wake up and find out that it’s not real. It’s a very unstable political climate at the moment and it scares me to see the negative repercussions that will come as a result of all of the work that’s been done—especially with the environment, the way it is in its fragile state, seeing the direction that it’s going in, and the decisions that are being made in the White House. The decisions that the administration makes at the moment affect the world, not just this country. Are you a dual citizen here? No, I have a green card. I cannot vote. I did not have the option to make an impact on this election other than with my voice and the platforms that I have access to. You’re on People’s Most Beautiful list, and constantly get named on Maxim and FHM’s lists. But you stand for so much more than just external beauty… It’s so not real—that’s the scariest part. And now we have apps that can Photoshop anything and everything, which puts out an image that’s not realistic. Young girls see this image and think that’s what they should be and that’s how they should wake up. That was one of the main reasons that I wanted to be a part of that issue [People’s Most Beautiful] and especially proud to represent the section [with no makeup on]. I don’t wear makeup on a daily basis. I try to reflect that on my social media, too. When I do Instagram stories, I’m not all dolled up and glamorous, it’s a peek into my day-to-day life, which is kind of normal and average. I get pimples and zits all the time and I deal with them just like anybody else, with zit cream. Sometimes I walk out of the house with the zit cream and forget about it. And that’s just life, it’s unpredictable and awkward and we all feel insecure all the time but that’s completely normal and okay and everybody has good days and bad days. It’s especially important now to show young girls that and to make them aware that they are perfect exactly the way they are. Is there something that you’re insecure about? I’m very busy and on the go and I don’t sleep that much. I have terrible dark circles under my eyes as a result of that, so I’m constantly aware of covering up my dark circles and trying to look like I’ve slept 10 hours when I’ve only slept 3. How do you handle the online critics? The online world can be beautiful but also vicious, and it’s very much like high school in the real world. After you graduate, you’re still a student and you still get bullied and have good and bad experiences. The thing about the online world is that it’s almost worse because they can hide behind a screen and say what they want without face-to-face confrontations. So as a result, they end up saying worse things because it’s harder to say something mean to someone’s face. I just try to ignore it. I don’t read comments often if I can avoid it. I try to practice what I preach, and if I put good vibes out there I hope that they’ll come back to me and karma will bite them in the bum. You recently said you picked up healthier habits like eating more. Was it hard being a teenager growing up in front of the camera? I think everyone is always self-conscious, whether you’re in front of the camera or not. Everyone always loves to look their best, so of course I was always aware of it, but I think it comes down to education. I didn’t learn until later in

life that the more you eat, the more your metabolism works at a healthy rate and you’ll actually lose weight and be more toned if you keep it on a consistent schedule. I would never starve myself then but I would definitely choose different things and eat smaller portions. Set the record straight—there’s a great photo of you and some bridesmaids hitchhiking at Julianne Hough’s wedding. What happened? The bus broke down from the wedding to the reception because they were at two different locations. We didn’t actually hitchhike. We were joking. But we took that opportunity, as we waited for the rest of the vehicles to come back around, to get an awesome photo of all the bridesmaids. It was a joke. We didn’t really get in the cars of any strangers, but we would’ve if anybody had stopped. Your new movie, Flatliners, deals with bringing people back to life… We went through a rigorous medical boot camp to learn about everything to do with reviving a human in a dire situation— CPR, how to use the defibrillator, how to get heart monitors, and if that’s not working, how to physically check the body. We had to do that so that we would look believable on camera as if we had been doing it for years. I don’t want to say that I could save a person’s life, but I could definitely assist in keeping them alive until the proper paramedics came if something were to happen. My character especially, she’s the most hardheaded, stubborn, by-the-rules kind of girl, and she’s competitive, so she wanted to go above and beyond and test the limit. The film explores different themes of life and death and moral compasses and doing the right thing. If you don’t do the right thing, does it weigh heavy on you? Will you do something about it or will you just turn a blind eye? Is it difficult dating in Hollywood? You’re the subject of paparazzi but you do a very good job of keeping it private. That is between me and my dating life and it will stay that way and that’s why I’m so good at it because I avoid these questions. We’re so focused on the ocean in Miami and so are you, with your commitment to sharks as an ocean advocate. Sharks are so misunderstood and we have a terrible fear of them because of movies and they get a bad rep because of the press. On the rare occasion there’s some sort of accident, you hear about it because it gets publicized, but you don’t hear about all the times when nothing happens, which is more often than not. There are sharks in the water all the time swimming with people, and they don’t do anything because they don’t care about us. They’re animals and they make mistakes so every once in a while, you have to realize that if you’re in their home, you have to play by their rules and you are taking a risk when you’re in the water with them, but they’re not really interested in humans. I want to spread that awareness and make sure they get protected because they don’t have anybody looking out for them. I’m going to be the voice for these amazing and beautiful creatures. Flatliners hits theaters September 29. For information on how to get involved with protecting sharks, visit oceana.org.

THE YOUNG TRENDSETTER It’s only fitting that designer to the (social media) stars Alexandra Grief and her popular Montce Swim line call South Florida home.
THAT MIAMI VIBE International personalities, sizzling restaurants, stunning fashion, and red-hot real estate make the Magic City a global destination. Here’s who to know, where to go, and why the world can’t get enough... of Miami! by KATIE JACKSON portraits by VANESSA ROGERS
Miami plays host to the annual Swim Week every July, but there’s plenty of models showing off skin the rest of the year, too. If you’re wondering whose bikinis are behind the most-liked It girl posts on Instagram (Kendall Jenner, Emily Ratajkowski, and Jennifer Lopez included), here’s your answer: South Florida-born and -raised Alexandra Grief—designer of the highly coveted swimwear label Montce Swim, renowned for its barely-there bikini bottoms and figure-flattering prints. “We’re all about fit and comfort,” says Grief. But before Montce became a sensation among A-listers, Grief began designing out of her Fort Lauderdale apartment in 2009. “I owe my success to word of mouth through local girls,” she says. Now, Montce has more than 258,000 followers on Instagram (@Montce_Swim) and countless order requests from famous fashionistas. And soon, guys will get in on the action as well. “We’re thinking of getting into men’s swim trunks and board shorts.” The swimwear brand currently has two successful boutiques in Fort Lauderdale and LA. Next up? “We’ll be opening a store in Miami as soon as possible in 2018,” Grief says. “We’re thinking the Wynwood Arts District or Sunset Harbour.” 731 NE Second Ave., Fort Lauderdale, 954-440-2522; montce.com

THE AESTHETE Santlov is transforming the way Miami—and the world—perceives art by fusing fantasy with reality. If you’re an art lover living in the 305, chances are you’re already a die-hard Santlov fan with a favorite piece from his “ToysRUs” collection. If you’re not, it’s time to open up your social media apps and follow @Santlov right now. With work that is as visually stimulating as it is mentally engaging, it’s hard to imagine that the Miami-based artist never received formal training—rather, he says, his creative genius happened “sort of by accident.” Five years ago, Santlov began using photography and graphic design to create his now widely recognized “ToysRUs” series (featuring iconic characters from popular films like Darth Vader texting on an iPhone and Spiderman sporting Nike “Spiderkicks”)— a hobby that quickly turned into a passion. “It’s an attempt to humanize societal, cultural, and technological norms onto inanimate objects,” he says. Though he’s an art star on the rise, he acknowledges it was the Magic City that helped propel him to success. “[You develop] a unique set of life skills to thrive in this multicultured, multisensory, and multilayered city,” he says. Today, Santlov continues to create art with the goal of making Miamians (and his 310,000 Instagram followers) think differently. “Find beauty in everything and seek a higher purpose. Don’t become someone’s toy!” Find Santlov’s work at the Avant Gallery at the Epic Hotel, 270 Biscayne Blvd. Way, Ste. 102, Miami, 786-2208600; avantgallery.com/santlov.

THE EXECUTIVE Nomad Management founder Damon Rutland followed his “nomadic” instincts and headed south to Miami for business and pleasure. Miami is synonymous with models. And no one knows that better than Nomad Management founder Damon Rutland. The international model-turned-businessman launched Nomad (the name was inspired by Rutland’s world travels and is also “Damon” spelled backwards) in 2001 out of New York City. But after more than a decade in the Big Apple, Rutland wanted to bring his talents to South Beach. “When I realized that I could really be anywhere in the world and do my job, I knew I had to come to Miami,” he says. “I love the community aspect, especially in South Beach. I don’t have a car here; I just ride my bike.” Now, Rutland runs his global business out of his South of Fifth office, while managing the careers of supermodels like Coco Rocha, who is also his business partner. But Rutland is set on making sure that Nomad isn’t just any management company; it’s an environment that promotes health and happiness. “The modeling industry can be tough sometimes,” he says. “But we’re all human beings and should be treated with respect, and I never want to lose sight of that.” Adding to his keen business sense is a quality-of-life factor only Miami can provide—his new home is a couple of blocks from the beach and his office in either direction. TAKE US TO THE RIVER WITH NEARLY 30 YEARS OF INTERNATIONAL REAL ESTATE EXPERIENCE, SHAHAB ARMELY TURNS AWAY FROM THE BEACH FOR HIS LUXURIOUS NEW SOUTH FLORIDA VISION. BY ROBYN A. FRIEDMAN
PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARY BETH KOETH
As the founder of the New Yorkbased KAR Properties, a real estate investment and development firm, Shahab Karmely has acquired, repositioned, and monetized more than 3 million square feet of office, luxury mixed-use, and industrial space in the United States, Europe, and Asia. He’s currently making his mark on Miami with One River Point, a 418-unit luxury condominium project on the Miami River, designed by internationally acclaimed architect Rafael Viñoly. Why the river? Just wait and see.… How is One River Point different from other new condo buildings in Miami? We are a fully finished product—not decorator-ready. We are furnitureready and branded with our kitchens, bathrooms, and appliances. You get travertine stone floors, onyx bathrooms, B&B Italia kitchens and bathrooms—all of this from the $800,000s. How are sales? The market is challenging. Given where the market is, I’m satisfied. We’ve always taken a long view. How will One River Point further the river’s evolution? We have the largest assemblage on the river and were first to bring luxury

That’s why we brought in Rafael Viñoly, [hotelier] Adrian Zecha, [luxury designer] Rémi Tessier, and [the landscape design firm] Sasaki—all people who work on world-class projects in New York City, London, or Shanghai. I’ve given a lot of people confidence that the river is where it’s happening. How important was it to have a renowned architect? Rafael is one of the few architects today who has a strong practice in the private arena but is also very respected for upscale civic projects. Literally 100 percent of the response I’ve had, whether it’s brokers, competing developers, or clients, has been “Wow.” How is the definition of luxury changing in Miami? The epicenter of luxury living, whether it’s Chicago, London, Bangkok, is on the river. The thinking in the past was that

luxury could not be sustained away from the beach; my premise is that Miami has arrived as a world city, and all of the excitement of Miami— from the Design District to Wynwood to Brickell City Centre—is with city places, not beach places. The river is Miami’s future. You’re a passionate gardener. Why? I bought a six-acre historic property in East Hampton with extensive plantings, and I became very involved with the planning of the gardens and their maintenance. I developed a real love of understanding how gardens work with each other and the difference between planning for color or shade or scent. When you get older, you become more appreciative of the cycles of life and realize that a lot of things are worth waiting for. ARTFUL LIVING INVESTMENT IMPRESARIO CHAD LOWETH FUSES HIS LOVE FOR ART WITH HIS BUSINESS EXPERTISE TO CREATE A STUNNING NEW SPEC HOUSE IN OLD CUTLER BAY. BY JEAN NAYAR
154 OCEANDRIVE.COM
It’s never too late for a new beginning, and Miami residents are always chasing that next big thing. An avid art collector and patron, Miami-based entrepreneur Chad Loweth opened the Scenario Gallery in Wynwood last year to bring a handpicked set of prominent international artists and collectors together with a fresh
approach to programming and exhibitions. Yet as a businessman who spent decades in finance and hedge funds, Loweth also excels at teaching emerging collectors about the investment value of contemporary art and how to navigate its market with finesse. His foray into residential real estate development merges his skills in art
and commerce—as evidenced in his newest property, the Balada House, a tour de force in Old Cutler Bay with interiors by design dynamo Karla Pohlmann; listed at $18 million, it’s slated for completion later this year. We asked the developer and the designer about creating an artful approach to life.
Why Old Cutler Bay? Chad Loweth: It’s one of Coral Gables’ greatest gated communities—surrounded by state parks, accessible via the historic Old Cutler Road, and a paradise for boaters. It’s also one of the most desirable communities to raise a family, with its centuries-old banyan trees that look like something out of a

fairy tale, its highly acclaimed schools, great shopping, and wonderful restaurants. How would you describe the grounds at Balada? CL: Unique. A double lot on a corner cul-de-sac with no neighbors across the way and facing an untouched state park of protected land. It’s privacy at its utmost. What’s your vision for the houses you develop in this area? CL: This is the fifth property I’ve developed in Coral Gables. My vision from the
beginning was to develop houses with a modern feel, open floor plans, and elements of warmth, [with] a blend of natural materials that reflects the surrounding nature. An indoor-outdoor lifestyle was always part of the idea, allowing residents to have their boats docked right in the backyard with a straight path to the bay. Highlights in the Balada House include a flexible layout within approximately 10,000 square feet, seven large bedrooms— including a stunning master bedroom
overlooking the park and water—seven bathrooms, private balconies, an incredible gym area, a library, and a wine cellar. How do the interiors of the home reflect the big-picture vision? Karla Pohlmann: It was a natural process to preserve all the open areas and flow of spaces and enhance the beautiful views. I created the façade as a continuation of the interior by observing a coherent language between elements. I was stunned watching the sunset from inside.

The experience of arriving in the house is fabulous—as soon as you park the car in front, you have a sense of the whole house, since the golden mirrors reflect the sunset right behind it. How do the materials reinforce the design? KP: They integrate the lines of the project and natural light. Wood and limestone were laid as floors, while privacy glass in the master bedroom was strategically placed to preserve the openness. The idea was to experience the entire house from every corner of the property, indoors and outdoors. What other details are important? CL: The house utilizes the newest technology, including a large video wall in the living room, which enables a state-ofthe-art showcase for digital art; Lutron and Crestron [smart home] systems; and stunning water features
inside and outside. KP: The latest automation allows you to control lights, shades, waterfalls, music, and pretty much everything remotely. The outdoor and pool areas are interconnected, as well as the private boat dock. How does your attitude toward art impact your approach to developing living spaces? CL: I strongly believe any expressive high-end development needs to bring special attention to any art collection that will be displayed. I intend to select the collection for this property from my own gallery. Whom do you envision living in this home? CL: Anyone who appreciates the good things in life—from business executives and overseas transplants to avid boaters and families with young children. It will be all about a great lifestyle! elliman.com

POOLSIDE PARADISE THE FOUNDERS OF HAUTE FURNITURE COMPANY MORADA CREATE AN ENERGETIC AND EASY-ON-THE-EYES POOLSCAPE FOR A MIDCENTURY BUNGALOW ON MIAMI BEACH. BY JEAN NAYAR
Effortless beauty is not always effortless. In fact, it takes a keen eye and just the right touch to create this charm, particularly in the backyards of some of Miami’s most luxurious homes. For Fernan Hernandez, a perfectionist architect and furniture designer, it’s a matter of mixing a curiosity for life and design innovation with his unique artistic sense—a combination that landed him several Furniture Designer of the Year awards for his global collections as the creative head behind Morada-Haute Furniture Boutique. Working with Morada cofounder Holger Odenstein, the duo produced
158 OCEANDRIVE.COM
their latest masterpiece, a backyard setup to complement some 8,000 square feet of outdoor space at a threebedroom bungalow-style Mid-Beach home erected in 1951. “It was completely redone with all walls opened so you can enjoy the garden from every room,” says Hernandez. The owners were keen on making use of the outside surrounding lush garden by integrating it with the living space. “Aesthetically, they wanted it to look like a boutique villa inspired by tropical and Southeast Asian elements by adding pieces like handcrafted
coconut palm tree planters to feel fresh, elegant, inviting— but still cool and hip.” In the pool area, Fernandez and Odenstein established a lounge-like feel, perfect for entertaining during the day and at night. “Outside, you have the Morada outdoor sofas with flexible boosters that allow you to convert the sofas to sun beds, lounge sofas, or chaise lounge/ daybeds,” says Odenstein. The Morada sun beds, made of wood with integrated umbrellas, all face toward the stunning Medusa-inspired sculpture at the end of the swimming pool. “[It’s made from the] roots of a Suar tree and part of the
trunk, from which the artists carved the face. The hair is simulated by the dense root netting,” explains Hernandez. The resulting atmosphere, Hernandez says, is “contemporary, but with some ethnic elements that make it cozy and comfortable. [It’s] the perfect extension of the living room: inside-outside living.” 3701 Biscayne Blvd., Miami, 305-501-2768; moradafurniture.com

INSIDE JOB YOUR WARDROBE ISN’T THE ONLY PLACE FOR GUCCI’S BOLD COLORS, RICH TEXTURES, AND ITALIAN ROMANTICISM...
The new Gucci Décor collection includes pillows, trays, and richly lacquered chairs with embroidered cushions, made in Italy and adorned with the designer’s signature animal motifs. Go bold!
Designer Alessandro Michele’s assertive trademarks aren’t limited to Gucci’s sturdy-heeled shoes or jackets with expertly cut sleeves. The brand recently unveiled Gucci Décor, a collection of items designed to adorn living rooms and dressing tables while sharing the vibrancy that has come to distinguish his wearable pieces. “He loves abundance,” says Neiman Marcus’s Ken Downing. “[He has an] ability to create this romantic, effusive abundance that captures the imagination and draws you in.” That extravagant sensibility lends itself especially well to décor; it’s easy to imagine a single statement piece accenting an otherwise understated room. The collection includes ornamental pillows, trays, richly lacquered chairs with embroidered cushions, and small tables, all made in Italy. It features many of Michele’s bold signatures: embroidered images of animals, such as slithering serpents or roaring lions; the use of rich velvet; and a vivid palette that includes colors immutably associated with Gucci’s heritage, like crimson red and bright green. Among the line’s standouts are the deeply scented candles encased in decorative porcelain vessels (designed to be keepsakes long after the fragrant wax has burned off). The elegant containers are made by Richard Ginori, a centuries-old producer of china, founded, like Gucci, in Florence. Ginori is, not coincidentally, owned by the same parent company, and for the last few years Michele has overseen that brand’s creative direction in addition to his duties at Gucci. ROCHE, REIMAGINED JAPANESE DESIGNER ENZO T ADA REVAMPS THE FRENCH WARES OF ROCHE BOBOIS JUST IN TIME FOR THE BRAND’S GRAND OPENING OF ITS NEW MIAMI DESIGN DISTRICT SHOWROOM. BY BEAU BANNEN
Following collaborations with Christian Lacroix Maison, Sonia Rykiel Maison, Missoni Home, and Jean-Paul Gaultier, renowned international luxury furniture designer Roche Bobois has enlisted Kenzo Takada to reimagine its iconic Mah Jong sofa—a free-form modular piece made for multiple
162 OCEANDRIVE.COM
configurations, originally launched in 1971. “I wanted to completely change their colors and interpret them in a new way,” says the Japaneseborn designer, who organized the collection into three thematic color schemes: Asa (morning), Hiru (midday), and Yoru (evening). “I [used]
inspiration from the patterns found on kimonos, specifically the weaving used for Noh theater [costumes],” Takada says. It’s been 14 years since the dynamic duo’s last partnership. This time, aside from new fabric creations, Japaneseinfluenced coordinating earthenware vases and
enamel-coated occasional tables—plus a hand-tufted Gara rug—round out the offerings. The timing couldn’t be more perfect, as the high-end brand celebrates the grand opening of its new Miami Design District store as a third component to its Aventura and Coral Gables hubs. The store also
happens to be designed by Jacqueline Hopfer, head of Roche Bobois’s interior architecture department and daughter of legendary designer Hans Hopfer, who created the original Mah Jong sofa. Call it a fullcircle, or better yet, a modular moment. 3450 Biscayne Blvd., Miami; roche-bobois.com

So naturally, Bock and Miami Beach are a match made in heaven. “I go to Miami a lot,” she says. “[For] girl trips, we always end up coming here!” Bock joined the city’s elite for a private dinner at the Delano’s newest dining destination, Leynia, before stepping out on the red carpet in a sexy and sleek navy Alice + Olivia dress paired with Stuart Weitzman pumps. Once inside the soirée, she mingled in a celeb-filled crowd that included Tyson Beckford and Annie Gustafsson while watching the Jantzen swimwear models walk on water during a presentation of the brand’s colorful Cruise 2018 collection.

SORSO, AMORE! CHEFLEBRITY AND JAMES BEARD AWARD WINNER SCOTT CONANT ADDS A POP-UP TO HIS ITALIAN EATERY IN THE FONTAINEBLEAU, WITH WHIMSICAL COCKTAILS AND DELICIOUS EATS GALORE. BY ALEJANDRA TORRES
Chef de cuisine Neil O’Connell at Sorso by Scarpetta, located at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach, grates truffles tableside onto homemade pasta.
The word sorso means “sip” in Italian—and that’s just what you’ll do in the Scott Conant-curated lounge Sorso. Both of Conant’s projects—Scarpetta and Sorso— pay homage to the flavors of Italy. In the former, you’ll enjoy a simple yet fine dining experience, with creamy polenta and a glass of vino. In the latter, you’ll imbibe carefully crafted cocktails with—here’s the best part—your own choice of ingredients. Whether it’s an orange-infused Campari mixed with flower petals, a spicy jalapeño-infused cocktail, or a newly designed elixir, the beverages are tailored to each guest’s palate (and Instagram feed). 4441 Collins Ave., Miami Beach, 305-6744660; fontainebleau.com
