In Cameroon, Prescraft has partnered with hundreds of artisans to marry indigenous arts with modern technique. Potters with a deep history in ceramics from the village of Bamessing sculpt each individual piece on a wheel, trim it by hand, and then glaze and fire the earthenware in wood-burning kilns. Committed to ecological and social justice, Prescraft runs a reforestation program with local farms, provides professional development, and improves life in artisan communities by minimizing the effects of migration from their villages.

What Is Fair Trade? Fair Trade is an alternative approach to business that offers a greater equity in the international trading system. It supports craftspeople in developing countries who lack economic opportunity and often face hurdles in finding markets and customers for their goods.

What Does That Really Mean? Fair Trade is about making a difference to artisans and their communities while offering great products to the public. By purchasing items from Fair Trade organizations, communities are improved; nutritional needs met; the poor, especially women, are empowered; and the environmental impact of production is minimized. This is possible because Fair Trade approaches development as a holistic process.
