Brett McDonough, Drawing Mug, Local Stoneware

IN T R OD U C T I O N Welcome to the Fall/Winter Program Guide. We put these guides together for our fans because there is just so much to see and do at Greenhill—it is hard to know how much we do, so we try to give you a sampling here. The pages ahead will give you a glimpse of The Gallery, InFocus Gallery, The Shop and of course, ArtQuest, our wonderful experiential studios. I was just walking through The Shop before writing this introduction. I picked up almost every piece and looked at it, and what I seeing was the wonderful craftsmanship that is indicative of the NC artist. I recently said to someone that there is nothing regional about the artists of NC, it is just where they choose to live, study and work. The art shown at Greenhill attests to the caliber of work being created by NC artists. In The Shop right now I could easily walk through and talk to you about most of the artists, like glass artist John Geci who is married to ceramic artist Courtney Martin, from Bakersville who just had their second baby, and work in a studio they built together. Then there is Brett McDonough who lives in Greensboro and teaches at Guilford College—you can see his clay work that is imaginative and fun, and learn how he is a great teacher and mentor to many. Yes, John, Courtney and Brett chose to live in NC, but their work could easily be in a gallery in Chicago, Atlanta or DC. This was just a little of what I was thinking as I was admiring the work selected by Shop Manager Toni Tronu. What makes Greenhill great is we know the art and artists of NC. We bring the heritage of the handmade into ArtQuest, we know where contemporary art is heading and we understand the history from which it is rooted. It is special here. This fall and winter I invite you to come and participate; look through a Scanning Electron Microscope during Microcosm, or during Winter Show, buy yourself or a family member their first work of original art, or sit with a child as they explore color, texture and self-expression. There is a lot going on here. Come along and be a part of it. Best, Laura, Executive Director, Greenhill

Then they will create an artwork of their favorite magnified object. Students will receive detailed instructions for making their own microscope at home. ART OF THE CRYSTAL K-2 TUESDAY, JANUARY 5 | 3RD-6TH TUESDAY, JANUARY 12 Mother Nature loves pattern and repetition as can be seen in the formation of crystals. In this session, YAK members will embrace the spirit of winter by investigating our favorite crystal – the snowflake! Members will learn about Wilson Bentley, aka Snowflake Bentley - the first person to photograph a single snow crystal in 1885. By attaching a microscope to a camera he was able to capture these “miracles of beauty”. Inspired by the details and patterns found in snowflakes YAK members will create their own snowflakes using glue as a base. They will further their exploration of the science behind crystal formation by creating their own crystal garden using salt and sugar.
