IN T R OD U C T I O N For 41 years GreenHill has been the anchor tenant to the Greensboro Cultural Center at the corner of Friendly and Davie Street. In 2016 we are excited to welcome LaBauer Park to Davie Street. This world-class park will add such a dynamic dimension to the Downtown Cultural District—we are looking at this as a cultural renaissance for the north end of downtown. In 2018 the Steven Tanger Center for the Performing Arts will bookend the far side of Davie Street and as the adage goes, “Where arts are, prosperity blossoms.” But what does this all mean for GreenHill? It is simple, it adds excitement and exposure. We will meet new people, introduce new families to the creative space of ArtQuest and engage a new audience in the conversation about contemporary NC art exhibited in The Gallery, The Shop and InFocus Gallery. I cannot wait! As executive director at GreenHill I had the honor of serving on the task force that looked at the need for a performing arts center and being a part of the art selection team that chose Janet Echleman to create an iconic sculpture for Greensboro. We are excited to become part of the programming that will take place in LaBauer Park, and we are, as always, thinking about ways to cross promote with Greensboro Public Library, the Greensboro Children’s Museum and Greensboro Historical Museum. All of the changes happening around us are so exhilarating. In the January – June 2016 Program Guide you will find some great information on upcoming exhibitions and programs. As always, we are really thoughtful in our planning and hope you will enjoy what you will see in the pages to follow. Come to GreenHill, and come often, because every time you interact with art, whether as a viewer or doer, something changes in your heart and head. That’s why we love it here.
Best, Laura, Executive Director, GreenHill

L AST R E M A I N IN G C ATHE D R A L A P RI L 8 - JUNE 1 2, 201 6 Last Remaining Cathedral: Illuminations of Nature, is a mid-career retrospective of paintings and works on paper inspired by man’s essential relationship to the natural world by Robert Johnson alongside sculptural book forms in wood, fiber, mica by master book artist Daniel Essig. Daniel Essig and Robert Johnson glean materials and find subjects in what Johnson has called the “last remaining cathedral” – places where wild nature still exists. A modern-day pilgrim, Johnson has hiked and sketched in wilderness regions abroad, across the United States and near his home in Celo, North Carolina for over four decades to study scenery used as source materials for his iconic painting series. The practice of Asheville-based artist Daniel Essig also involves a close relationship with the natural world. Since childhood Essig collected and preserved fossils, sheets of mica, rusty nails and old books. Objects from his studio’s archive of treasures embellish the sculptural books he creates that redefine the field of book arts. YAK
do you hav e a young artist? YAK (Young Artists Kollective) is an interactive themed-based educational program where young artists problem-solve, use exciting new art materials, look at and learn about NC art and artists and meet fellow artists. Summer and fall 2015 session activities will focus on the intersection of art and science. YAK meetings are 4-5:15 PM on the first Tuesday of the month for K-2nd graders and the second Tuesday for 3rd-6th graders. Each four-month session (one meeting per month) is $35. Household Members and above receive a 10% discount.
Sharpie Pen Tie-Dye K-2 Tuesday, FEBRUARY 2 | 3rd-6th Tuesday, FEBRUARY 9 Ever noticed that when some inks get wet they bleed and separate into different colors? You are witnessing something known as chromatography, a method used to separate color pigments. YAK members will learn more about how this works through a series of experiments and even use the same process to make a tie dye tee-shirt using sharpies and rubbing alcohol. make your own rainbow K-2 Tuesday, march 1 | 3rd-6th Tuesday, march 8 What makes grass look green or a banana look yellow? The colors we see are actually the absorption and reflection of light waves. After viewing works that celebrate color in The Gallery, YAK members will learn about the fundamentals of the color spectrum and the mysteries of white light. By performing experiments to create rainbows, members will learn how light separates into the color spectrum using a prism and make rainbow prints. Members will also learn about how the eye is able to perceive color and why the mantis shrimp is changing the way scientist think about color perception.

Dirt Painting – In Celebration of the Earth K-2 Tuesday, april 5 | 3rd-6th Tuesday, april 12 Celebrate the Earth by using the Earth to create a painting. YAK members will make their own paint using dirt as pigment and will learn about the science of dirt and why it comes in many different colors.
Drawing from Nature K-2 Tuesday, may 3 | 3rd-6th Tuesday, may 10 Artist Robert Johnson’s work focuses on the beauty of the natural environment. He wants viewers to “foster a deeper appreciation for what is left of wild Nature.” In The Gallery YAK members will investigate the process he uses to record observations in a natural setting. Afterward, members will go outside and practice the same process and create their own drawings from nature. greenhillnc.org / yak

po p- u p residencies GreenHill’s Pop-Up Residency is a 10-day program in which selected NC artists create and exhibit artworks in ArtQuest. A Pop-Up Residency is perfect for the artist who enjoys interaction with visitors and likes to engage in active conversations about creative practices and artmaking. Pop-Up Residency is a competitive process with applications accepted on an on-going basis. Materials stipend of $200 is provided for each selected artist as well as access to some of the resources of ArtQuest.
