MICROCOSM
MICROCOSM
WHAT WAS SPECIAL ABOUT THIS PAST YEAR… Microcosm, GreenHill’s first exhibition exploring connections between art and science with the rich programs associated with it, including educational curriculum, art historical lectures and slide shows by scientists. WHAT INSPIRED ME THIS PAST YEAR…. The intricate designs of nature in Daniel Kariko’s photographs of insects from his home and Robert Johnsons landscapes. The energized fields of James Williams’ new paintings in It’s all about the hue and the way Carolyn Nelson’s silk tapestries in that same show evoked light shimmering across the sea. WHAT I LOVED ABOUT THIS PAST YEAR… Seeing The Gallery transformed by Donald Martiny ‘s works which broke barriers between painting and sculpture and suggested new ways of approaching gestural abstraction. Edie Carpenter, Director, Curatorial & Artistic Programs

From exhibitions to educational programs, First Fridays to fundraisers, there is always something different and worthwhile going on at GreenHill and I am inspired by the energy and good works to be found there. Erica Procton, Corporate Development Associate

WHAT WAS SPECIAL ABOUT THIS PAST YEAR… The collaboration with NCCJ, African American Atelier, CVA and Guilford Native American Art Gallery on Art + Dialogue | Responding to Racial Tension in America. Such a powerful and charged subject so beautifully placed in context by 21 great visual artists, layered with dialogues and multidisciplinary works to help move the conversation forward. WHAT INSPIRED ME THIS PAST YEAR…. The women who participate in Learning ART Together—these immigrant and refugee women who came for 12 Mondays to the ArtQuest Studios---many experienced hardships we cannot imagine but they still brought creativity, joy and laughter with them each time they came to GreenHill. It was a joy to watch. WHAT I LOVED ABOUT THIS PAST YEAR… Is my great staff, digging in, pulling together and always excelling. Laura Way, Executive Director

WHAT INSPIRED ME THIS PAST YEAR… Seeing the changes happening in and around GreenHill. New construction in Greensboro’s Cultural District has a lot of people excited to visit this area of downtown more frequently. Increased interest in Davie Street happenings enables GreenHill to showcase the talent of North Carolina artists to a larger audience-- which is so exciting for us here. FAMILY NIGHT
WHAT WAS SPECIAL ABOUT THIS PAST YEAR: This was my first year at GreenHill, and I have been constantly in awe of all of the hard work and research that goes into each beautiful exhibition, the careful curation of the fresh and exciting art in our shop, and the development of our educational and outreach programming. WHAT INSPIRED ME THIS PAST YEAR: I was especially inspired by the accessibility of the art and artists that show in our gallery space. From the many free public events to admission-free entrance to our The Shop & The Gallery, great art is always easy to find at GreenHill! WHAT I LOVED ABOUT THIS PAST YEAR: As an artist myself, I love that every day at GreenHill can be like being “a kid in a candy store.” I felt immersed in North Carolina’s art scene all year, and really loved the series of artists’ talks - especially the chance to listen to Margie Stewart, who is a perceptual painter with whom I share many artistic interests. SUMMER CAMP FUN!
GSOHACK-A-THON | DEVELOPING AN APP FOR GREENHILL
WHAT INSPIRED ME THIS PAST YEAR…. The Hack-a-thon – working with UNCG and NCA&T Students to develop solutions for finding a clear understanding of how people are engaging in our space or with the art, to gather more information about who enters the space, and to find a good follow-up mechanism. This project was inspiring to see these students’ ideas and desire to find a solution- and in a larger sense to make Greensboro a more vibrant and connected community. WHAT I LOVED ABOUT THIS PAST YEAR… Over the past few years we have had some exciting changes with our staff/hours (including myself) and it has been great to see this new version of the GreenHill team build and get along so well. At the end of this year it felt like we are starting to hit our stride…we are all here for the same reason– it’s great to see all the different talents and personalities work together to achieve our goals. It makes the daily work more fun. Lauren Davis Gordon, Marketing & Design Guru

THE SHOP—HELPING YOU HAVE AN ARTFUL LIFE
WHAT INSPIRED ME THIS PAST YEAR…. For me, the ultimate inspiration is artist cultivation. Visiting art studios and forming strong relationships with artists is the best way to reach other makers. This year I was able to display over 30 new artists in The Shop, meet 25 of them face to face, and visit 20 of their studios- What a great year! Toni Tronu, Shop Manager + Registrar
