ART TO LIVE WITH Chieko Murasagi, Orangement, 2015, gouache and ink on Arches paper, 24 x 18 inches Chieko Murasagi will be in this year’s Winter Show exhibition.
INTRODUCTION A NOTE OF WELCOME. One of the best blog posts I’ve read about collecting stated: “Each individual art piece has a story to tell. It could be significant for a variety of reasons- where, when and why it was purchased. While each piece has its own story to tell, a collection of artworks is an assemblage of stories, enabling people to relive their childhood, or connect to a period in history they felt strongly about, and revisit it every now and again.” I could not agree more. I have been thinking about this quote and wondering why people shy away from thinking of themselves as collectors. I understand it at one level—when you think about a “collector” and his or her “collection”, it sounds expensive. And yes, you just have to hear about the astronomical prices auction houses have gotten for Picasso, Giacometti, Lichtenstein, Rothko or Warhol … but that is not the kind of collecting I am talking about. I am talking about the kind of collecting I do. I spend what I can afford because purchasing art is one of my priorities. And I only buy art that strikes a chord within me and makes me feel something: curious, restful, questioning, engaged, amazed. What about you? Do you walk into a room and see a painting that still makes you smile? Or look at a haunting photograph that draws you in and still wonder ‘what is the story behind those eyes?’ Pick up a handcrafted cup, bowl, or vase you found on a trip, and each time you touch it, you are transported back to that time when you first held it in your hand? The art chosen to outfit our homes is an articulation of our personalities, of our tastes, and each time you add more art to your home, you are creating your own unique aesthetic. As you go through this wonderful fall/winter edition of our Program Guide, think about coming in to GreenHill to enjoy any of our great programs, but too, consider coming in just to enjoy the art in The Shop, InFocus Gallery and The Gallery—it is all original and created by the creative artists of North Carolina. Maybe you will find a work of art you need to bring into your life—and start or continue to build your collection.
See you soon! Best, Laura

A NOTE FROM THE SHOP MANAGER, TONI TRONU You may have read the book, The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up, by Marie Kondo, where you ask yourself if each item in your house “sparks joy”. It reminds us of the necessity art plays in all of our lives. It’s part of what makes us happy in our own personal spaces. I encourage you to buy local, and purchase art created by North Carolina artists. You’re more likely to feel good about your purchase when it’s one-ofa-kind and contributes to the well-being of our arts community.
