INTRODUCTION A NOTE OF WELCOME It is finally summer in North Carolina. After what seemed like an interminable winter, we can look forward to warm evenings, lightning bugs, barbeques, and fun with family and friends. If it gets too hot, you can always find a cool welcoming place at GreenHill! This summer I will be spending time working with the City of Greensboro on its Cultural Arts Master Plan as a task force member. I love my time on the task force because I am meeting so many people in the community and hearing directly from them what they enjoy about the arts and cultural offerings, and what is missing that would make Greensboro a more vibrant city. Words I hear over and over are inclusivity in the arts and access. These are fundamental principles that drive many decisions we make at GreenHill, and it is affirming to know we provide a range of arts experiences that are meaningful for our community. Moving on to the next six months—we are so happy to be able to produce this beautiful Program Guide, once again designed by Lauren Gordon, our design guru, with the programs and activities curated by our planning team. We have so many great things going on over the next six months. Peruse the guide at your leisure to see what you would like to participate in; there is something for everyone. If you have a friend or family member who has not been to GreenHill, bring them by—attend an opening, come to Collector’s Choice, a Free Family Night or First Friday. Most programs are free, a few include a fee, but all are filled with creativity, fun, and inspiration. Stop by, say hello, explore, and you will find yourself immersed in an environment that cherishes the art of our time, and believes everyone has a creative streak—they just need to stretch it to make it nimble and readily accessible.

EXHIBITIONS GreenHill exhibitions advance creative and inclusive thinking by connecting today’s contemporary artists with individuals and communities in unexpected and stimulating ways. Each year GreenHill presents over 150 consequential North Carolina artists from the local, national, and international art scene through our curated, invitational and juried exhibitions. Encouraging diversity of thought and approach, GreenHill’s exhibitions range from retrospectives to small and large group shows focused on theme or medium. GreenHill’s exhibition gallery is a world-class, light-filled space that welcomes all viewers to take time to contemplate, engage, or just be inspired. Free and open to the public.
EXHIBITIONS BEAUTY OF THE BEAST MAY 4 - JULY 15, 2018 The formal beauty and intriguing diversity of beasts, large and small, have captured the imagination of artists throughout the ages. The artists in GreenHill’s spring through summer group exhibition utilize representations of animalia to transform the gallery into a wild space.

EXHIBITIONS BEYOND ORNAMENT AUGUST 3 – NOVEMBER 4, 2018 Beyond Ornament is a major survey exhibition highlighting North Carolina makers of studio jewelry. The artists selected for the exhibition produce objects that enhance and embellish the human body and also question what jewelry and ornament can be. They pursue projects extending beyond the body, and present works that cannot be contained within the traditional jewelry case.

ASSOC I AT E D EX H I B I TI ONS ECU METALS ECU Metals is an invitational exhibition featuring work by East Carolina University faculty and MFA students from the School of Art & Design. Guest-curated by Mi-Sook Hur, the exhibition showcases the influence of teaching artists such as Robert Ebendorf who are connected to ECU’s nationally recognized metals program. CADAVRE EXQUIS Curated by Sarah Tector, Cadavre Exquis is an exhibition of art jewelry based on the surrealist practice of the “exquisite corpse.” An exercise in blind collaboration and trust, nine artists created combined pieces of jewelry from assigned materials, only discovering the final version of their works at the end.

EXHIBITIONS ANALOG AUGUST 3 - NOVEMBER 4, 2018 Kallitypes, cyanotypes, pinhole photos and more. These North Carolina photographers are explorers in the field of photography, both in subject matter and process. Using traditional, analog and alternative process photography, the artworks in this exhibition capture fleeting moments out of time and space. All work is available for purchase.

EXHIBITIONS WINTER SHOW DECEMBER 2, 2018 - JANUARY 18, 2019 Winter Show brings together over 120 artists each year from across North Carolina and constitutes a comprehensive survey of the finest art and craft being produced in the state. The artists come from around the state, with a mix of mediums including painting, sculpture, photography, ceramic, jewelry, woodwork, fabric and fiber works, all within a harmonious installation. All work is available for purchase.

COLLECTOR’S CHOICE DECEMBER 1, 2018 | 7:00-11:00 PM Winter Show opens with one of Greensboro’s most popular holiday season events: the Collector’s Choice Fundraiser. Participants have an advance opportunity to purchase pieces in Winter Show before they are available to the public and to meet and mix with exhibiting artists over food and wine. ARTISTS All artists exhibited at GreenHill are significantly involved in the North Carolina arts community. Some of the artists we work with are born and raised in North Carolina, while others chose to live, work, or study in our state. Supporting these artists is the core of our mission. We exist to strengthen their careers creatively and financially. We recognize the interdisciplinary nature of contemporary art and advocate to expand support of all artists—dancers, musicians, poets, and more—because we are committed to the idea that a thriving arts community is essential to the well-being of North Carolina’s culture and economy.
GENERAL SUBMISSIONS SUBMIT ONLINE GreenHill’s mission is to exhibit the work of North Carolina artists living and working in the state. Exceptions are made for artists who have worked extensively in the state and maintain significant ties. Edie Carpenter, Director, Artistic & Curatorial Programs, develops exhibitions two to three years in advance. Artist selections are made to fit the scope of exhibition plans. Large group and small group shows alternate with solo exhibitions. Attention is also given to representing a variety of artistic mediums. We accept submissions from artists to exhibit on an ongoing basis and continuously scout for artists to feature in our exhibitions. Generally, GreenHill is looking for adept technical ability, accomplishment, innovation, visual appeal, and thoughtful content. The artists featured at GreenHill tend to be - but not always - professional artists who derive a portion of their income from producing artwork. We often place new artists in our annual Winter Show group exhibition or in our shop.

POP-UP RESIDENCY POP-UP RESIDENCY GreenHill’s Pop-Up Residency is a 10-day program in which selected North Carolina artists create and showcase their works in the studios. A Pop-Up Residency is perfect for the artist who enjoys interaction with visitors and likes to engage in active conversations about creative practices. Applications are accepted on an on-going basis. A materials stipend of $200 is provided for each selected artist as well as access to some of the resources of the studios.
BEATRICE RUGGERI SEPT 26, 2018 - OCT 5, 2018 Beatrice Ruggeri is a visual artist living in Durham, NC who will be creating an installation about her immigrant experience relocating to the United States from Italy. The installation will focus on the balance she seeks to find between her experiences with two countries, families and cultures. AVAILABLE RESIDENCY DATES October 24, 2018- November 2, 2018

OPEN NC ART REVIEW OPEN NC ART REVIEW The Open NC Art Review is a professional development program for artists. Artists present 15 images of current artwork during a five minute slideshow and get feedback from GreenHill’s Director of Curatorial & Artistic Programs, Edie Carpenter, and other arts professionals.
PRESENTATION FORMAT | PECHA KUCHA GreenHill uses a pecha kucha format, a simple presentation format in which each artist presents 15 images of their work. The images uploaded through the JotForm registration link will advance automatically every 20 seconds as each artist presents, allowing for a 5 minute presentation (20 seconds of dialogue for each slide).

STUDIOS GreenHill’s studios are dynamic, hands-on spaces with artmaking tools and supplies, from clay to recycled materials, readily available to spark your imagination in our self-driven environment. We encourage all visitors, children and adults alike, to have fun, explore and express ideas through their own works of art. Our studios are welcoming and community-building, where children and families can make art together and make new friends. Gallery Connection projects in the studios are integrated with the exhibition program, introducing visitors to themes and processes found in artwork in the gallery and shop. Daytime hours are focused primarily on children and families, but adults have programs geared toward their creative development and enjoyment too. The studios are open for children and families during regular operating hours for $6/person.

Start your Fridays with a fresh painting, a nice blob of clay, or read a story and build with blocks. It’s a time when families can enjoy a self-guided artmaking experience in the studios and take time to view the current exhibition in the gallery. Perfect for ages 1 and up and cost is $6.00 per person or free with Household level membership and above.
M A S T E R P I E C E F R I DAYS SEPTEMBER 7 - DECEMBER 28, 2018 | 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM Story-time, artmaking and a “lollipop” tour of GreenHill’s most current exhibition are in store for you each Friday morning at 11:00 AM during the school year. Activities are perfect for ages one to five. $6.00 per person or free with Household level membership and above.

YA K YO U N G A R T I S T KO L L E C T I V E SEPTEMBER - DECEMBER 2018 An interactive themed-based educational program where young artists problem solve, use exciting new art materials, look at and learn about North Carolina art and artists, and meet fellow artists. During this session we will have a series of STEAM-related projects where YAK members will learn about the magic of chemistry and physics to create unique works of art. Meetings are held 4:00-5:15 PM on the first Tuesday of the month for K-2nd graders and the second Tuesday for 3rd-6th. Each four-month session (one meeting per month) is $35. SEPTEMBER 4 + 11 | SUNPRINTS Make your own sun prints, aka cyanotypes, and learn why this simple process is so magical.
OCTOBER 2 + 9 | PAPER CLAY Create mushy, gushy paper clay using glue, tissue paper and other non-toxic ingredients and make a paper sculpture.
NOVEMBER 6 + 13 | CHROMATOGRAPHY Discover why leaves turn different colors in the fall and learn about chromatography, the science of color.
DECEMBER 4 + 11 | TEMPERA PAINT POUR It’s all the rage! Try out this non-toxic version of paint pouring that is sure to delight. Mix and pour to create unique marbleized patterns.

WORKSHOPS RELAX AND MAKE SOMETHING GreenHill’s workshops rejuvenate the spirit and increase understanding of North Carolina art, art materials, and processes. Led by trained facilitators and/or North Carolina artists, activities unfold in a stressfree setting using materials and techniques that can easily be enjoyed at all experience levels. You set the pace and enjoy spending time with others who love the opportunity to look at art, make stuff and meet great people. Participants are welcome to bring their own drinks and food. Household level members and above are eligible for a 10% discount. Cost is $35. Space is limited.

Adapt and reuse those trinkets and broken objects you just can’t part with to create a uniquely personal piece of jewelry. Broken earrings, coins, shells, stones and other natural materials, buttons and so much more can be used to make jewelry that will become a conversation piece.
PAINTING WITHOUT A PAINTBRUSH THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 2018 | 1-4 PM + 6-9 PM
Create works with a variety of colors, textures, and designs all without a paintbrush. Participants will investigate ways to apply paint to the paper to create unique abstract designs. We’ll review basic color theory and experiment with a variety of tools such as found objects, palette knives, sponges, spatulas and natural materials to create three finished works on paper.

ARTS + WELLNESS CLASSES C R E AT I V I T Y F O R W E L L B E I N G Nourish your creativity through hands-on art activities designed to inspire mindfulness and community fellowship. Each session will begin with a group check-in, followed by art making and creative expression followed by a guided tour of the current exhibition. Participants of all artistic backgrounds and abilities are welcomed and will be guided through the creative process. Cost is $15/participant.
MIXED MEDIA FLAGS OF HOPE SEP 20, 2018 | 5:30-7:00 PM Inspired by the traditional use of prayer flags, participants will create mixed media fiber art designs using hand and machine sewing centered around the idea of hope.
FABRIC MEMORY BEADS OCT 18, 2018 | 5:30-7:00 PM Create beads from fabric that can be used for creating one of a kind earrings, necklaces or bracelets. These beads are a great way to capture and save a special item of clothing or fabric that holds valued memories.

SUMMER CAMPS 2018 I N S P I R E C R E AT I V I T Y Summer Camps at GreenHill provide the perfect nurturing environment to inspire creativity and learning for curious kids. Small group sizes, experienced facilitators, access to the studios and the gallery make each day a fun-filled adventure. Week-long camps are themed and geared towards ages four years to rising sixth graders. Camps are $125 per camper unless noted otherwise.

PARTIES + RENTALS Our gallery is a large, light-filled, inviting space in which we present five exhibitions a year. It is an ideal venue for your next evening event, accommodating up to 200 guests for standing events and 125 guests for partially seated events. The studios are also a wonderful, creative space for out-of-the-box events, and limited rentals are available within this space as well. We will be in contact with you within 48 hours after submission of the form found on our website. Event rentals and party reservations can be made online.
