INTRODUCTION I am excited about GreenHill’s Beyond Ornament exhibition. Not only are some of my very favorite jewelers in the show, but it also embodies the essence of collaboration. The practice of craft, of making by hand, is based in a tradition of handing down techniques and processes from one generation of makers to the next. The artists in Beyond Ornament all have benefited from working with teachers who have inspired, taught, and nudged them to experiment and test their skills. In return, students invigorate teachers to continue to push their creative boundaries forward. In the exhibition and this catalogue, you will find the teacher and student, all with exquisite examples of their innovative and creative jewelry.
Beyond Ornament includes many of the very best metalsmiths creating work today. Their work is consequential, worthy of study and appreciation. Artists such as Bob Ebendorf could stand alone in any exhibition but in this one, his influence is reflected in the work of the artists who have studied with him. Susie Ganch makes stunning work, which I marvel at each time I see it. I admire her activism in educating metalsmiths, and jewelry wearers of the impact mining is having on the planet and global communities. Each artist in Beyond Ornament brings talent and individual perspective to their work; these are just two illustrations. We are looking forward to opening Beyond Ornament on August 3, 2018, and seeing the assemblage of jewelers Edie Carpenter has brought together. As GreenHill’s Director of Artistic & Curatorial Programs, Edie is continuously looking for ways to connect North Carolina contemporary artists with individuals and communities in unexpected and stimulating ways; in the following pages, you will see how well she succeeded. But she did not do this aloneECU professor Mi-Sook Hur curated an associated exhibition ECU METALS and Sarah Tector is leading Cadavre Exquis with works collaboratively created. A thank you to Lauren Gordon, our Marketing and Design Guru, the designer of beautiful the Beyond Ornament catalogue, and to Printery, our printer partner. This exhibition would not be possible without significant support from our supporters, members, The Cemala Foundation, and North Carolina Arts Council. Further support was provided by East Carolina University, where Beyond Ornament will travel to the Wellington B. Gray Gallery in January 2019, in conjunction with the Material Topics Symposium. Enjoy and best wishes,

Beyond Ornament explores the ferment in the field of studio jewelry taking place in North Carolina and features works by studio jewelers who have studied, teach or exhibit regularly in the state. An initial focus on ornament as an accessory or enhancement of the human body was soon expanded to embrace the wide range of practices displayed in the exhibition. The works on view reflect the cross-pollination between mediums infusing metalsmithing and jewelry design. Visitors will see examples of exquisite craftsmanship and also be introduced to innovative approaches to fabrication and the use of non-traditional materials enriching contemporary artistmade jewelry. They will also explore the expressive potential of jewelry to bridge the space between the wearer and society. Erika Diamond and Kit Paulson create wearable works of art, which though not jewelry, directly reference the body and the history of ornament. Several artists use architecture as a source of inspiration for their work such as in Peter Antor’s architectonic rings evoking miniature Frank Lloyd Wright buildings. Cultural references to topics such as man’s relationship to nature in Susie Ganch’s reuse of single-use plastics bring to the foreground the different ways content is transmitted through ornament to open conversations between wearer and maker. Marissa Saneholtz’s figurative enamel jewelry humorously questions gender stereotypes while Eliana R. Arenas’ pieces incorporating newspaper texts are seen by the artist as “protective device(s) and a shield to overcome tragic events.” Content in contemporary art jewelry is often embedded in the material itself such as in Julia M. Barello’s cultivation of extravagant blooms from X-ray film or Tara Locklear’s transformation of skateboard decks. By projecting jewelry’s site of operation beyond the body through the presentation of works that can be worn but are displayed as sculptural installations, a dialogue is also created in the space surrounding the viewer. Wall-mounted installations by Mi-Sook Hur and Ashley Buchanan deftly utilize the multiple to interrogate loss of diversity in plant species or variation in historical jewelry forms. The creative possibilities opened by shifts in scale when a core design is taken from the body to the floor and ceiling are explored by MC Floyd Nicolay and Sarah Tector. This activation of the gallery space will be articulated during Ornament Performed , a performance pairing dancers with works in the exhibition choreographed by Chris Yon produced in association with Dance Project and part of the North Carolina Dance Festival. Special thanks are due to Freudenberg Performance Materials for their donation of materia ls and to Cari Noel, a graduate student at the School of Design & Production, University of North Carolina School of the Arts for designing display elements for Beyond Ornament. A gracious thank you is also extended to the Porter | Price Collection for the loan of works by artist Robert Ebendorf to the ECU METALS exhibition.

C A D AV R E E X Q U I S N I N E J E WE LE RS CREATE COLL ECTIVE PIECES THROUGH AN EX ERCI SE I N B LI N D COLLAB OR ATIO N A N D T RU ST Cadavre Exquis is an exhibition of art jewelry based on the surrealist practice of the “exquisite corpse” that was traditionally performed as a drawing game. Nine artists created combined pieces of jewelry with each collaborator adding to the composition in sequence, only discovering the final version of their brooches, rings and necklaces at the end. Each group of three produced three pieces of wearable art in which each artist took a position one through three. Position one started the project and decided what was being created (ex. ring, necklace, brooch, etc). Position two furthered the project, steering it in whatever direction the artist chose. Position three completed the project, ultimately deciding the final look/outcome.

ECU METALS WORKS BY MFA STUDENTS AND PROFESSORS IN METAL DESIGN FROM EAST CAROLINA UNIVERSITY’S SCHOOL OF ART AND DESIGN East Carolina University has an exceptional MFA program in Metal Design with four outstanding faculty members, Linda Darty, Tim Lazure, Ken Bova, and Mi-Sook Hur and continues to be inspired by Professor Emeritus Robert Ebendorf. The Metal Design Graduate Program is committed to creating an atmosphere that promotes creative thinking and innovative approaches to working in the jewelry and metal design field. This includes using a wide range of materials (not just metal) and creating both functional and nonfunctional work. The students and graduates selected for the ECU METALS exhibition exemplify the diverse kinds of research and experimentation and the highly creative and personally expressive work nurtured at ECU. An active Visiting Artist Program supplements the program along with a student Metal Arts Guild, field trips, off-campus workshops and residencies. A multistate intercollegiate student-run Material Topics Symposium is organized each spring that includes multiple workshops, exhibitions, and lectures from notable artists in the field. ECU METALS, which will travel to the Wellington B. Gray Gallery for the 2019 symposium, is the first joint exhibition of works by students and teachers from the graduate program.
