DAMIAN STAMER South Lowell 8, 2014 oil on panel, 36 x 48 inches

“South Lowell 8” (2014) by Damian Stamer represents a scene from the artist’s rural North Carolina childhood. The careful rendering of an isolated farmhouse contrasts with the treatment of the painting’s surface which is blurred by craters, splatters and droplets. The melding of the two evokes the relationship between physical distance and the spaces of memory.

2

ALBERTO ORTEGA The Lateness of the Hour, 2013 oil on panel, 24 x 24 inches

Alberto Ortega investigates the emotive potential of light in quiet jewel-like paintings of ordinary buildings in suburban settings in and around Raleigh. In “The Lateness of the Hour (2013) a single streetlight illuminates a small house on a potholed street like a stage set. Dwarfed by a looming tree the house waits, though the curtains are closed and the players have retired for the night.

3

MARTA TORNERO Juli Showing Off Her Copper Shield, 2014 copper mesh, plastic, wood, 22 x 21 x 5 ¾ inches

“Juli Showing Off Her Copper Shield” (2014) relates to a series of photographic works by Marta Tornero based on stories gathered in the artist’s native Colombia recounting the acquisition of a woman’s first brassiere. The assemblage’s antique doll head recalls South American ex votos. The figure’s torso dressed in a delicate handmade garment, translates these narratives of feminine identity into elegant sculptural terms.

4

ABIGAIL HEUSS Navy Scrimshaw: USS Swearer (set), 2010 edgeworth tobacco tins, 2 x 8 x 4 inches, 2 x 12 x 4 inches

Abigail Heuss reinterprets objects in fine metal, paper and cloth that are inspired by family and images of home. “Navy Scrimshaw: USS Swearer” (2010) is named for the WWII ship her grandfather served on. Heuss transcribes the scrimshaw craft tradition of carving bone pie crimpers for the missed loved one into metal by engraving scenes of her grandfather’s voyage into tin from the packaging of his favorite tobacco.

5

MARGIE STEWART Boxes, Cup, Limes, 2014 oil on canvas, 18 x 24 inches

In Margie Stewart’s abstract still life entitled “Boxes, Cup, Limes” (2014) luscious paint handling vies with the composition’s geometric underpinnings, constructed uniquely from squares and circles. Brushy whites in the fore and background register passages of light and shadow while bright accents of green and burnt orange evoke a tabletop metropolis.

6

BRANCH RICHTER Upstairs, Painter House, 2014 acrylic on paper, 18 x 15 inches

In “Upstairs, Painter’s House” (2014) by Branch Richter who is a recent graduate of UNC-G’s MFA program, diagonal rows of cartons, brightly colored storage boxes and suitcases cascade forward conveying a sense of urgency reiterated by the directive “place label here.” Opaque and semitransparent planes form a puzzle-like space rich in possibilities.

7

KATHERINE MALONEY Quetzal Sake Set, 2013 white stoneware, gas fired, pitcher: 11.5 x 4.5 x 8.75 inches, cups 2 x 2 inches

Katherine Maloney graduated from Guilford College last year and her “Quetzal Sake Set” (2013) exemplifies this young potter’s skill in creating functional vessels that incorporate animal forms. The striking long green tail feathers of the bird revered by the Aztecs and Mayan form a graceful handle to the stoneware pitcher, with a colorful plume adorning each cup.

8

BRYANT HOLSENBECK Giacometti’s Hen, 2014 wire, paper pulp, found objects, 18 x 16 x 8 inches

Constructed from “wire, paper pulp and found objects from the artist’s garden,” ”Giacometti’s Hen” (2014) is an eloquent example of Bryant Holsenbeck’s ability to invest detritus with meaning. Glancing to the side and lifting one claw, the proud fowl defies us to define her as anything other than a sculptural being.

9

MELISSA ENGLER Bounty, 2014 poplar, milk paint, waxed linen thread, 28 x 26 x 3 inches

Melissa Engler’s works were a discovery of Greenhill’s 2013 survey exhibition of fine wood art “Speaking in Species | A North Carolina Perspective.” “Bounty” (2014) is created from poplar wood, carved to resemble bamboo, bone and ripening fruit. The relief sculpture alludes to carved ritual objects from many cultures yet creates a contemporary aesthetic with its calligraphic design and refined surfaces.
