WINTER SHOW DECEMBER 8, 2013 - JANUARY 12, 2014

Greenhill’s annual Winter Show exhibition serves as a showcase for North Carolina visual artists producing fine art and visionary craft. An invitational exhibition, Winter Show presents work of 130 emerging and established artists who live in or have strong creative ties to North Carolina. The work you will see in Winter Show illuminates new trends and widens our understanding of art produced by some of today’s foremost makers. The Gallery serves as conduit for artists and collectors, and offers visitors an immersion in innovative art with over 500 hand-crafted works in all mediums on view. Edie Carpenter Curator, Greenhill

Dana Moore Guest Craft Curator

Elizabeth Brim Steel Heels, 2009 forged and fabricated steel, 3.5 x 8 x 10 inches

“I admire Elizabeth’s ability to step into the traditionally male world of blacksmithing and create iconically glamorous forms.”

Barbara Campbell Thomas Jewel-like spot, 2013 acrylic and fabric on canvas, 20 x 18 inches

“Campbell Thomas’ abstractions associating collage and painting convey a sense of joyous immediacy through the use of syncopated patterns and intense colors.”

Edie Carpenter

3

Andrew Hayes Wedge, 2013 steel and book pages, 8 x 7 x 2 inches

“Andrew Hayes is using text and book to creating meaning, but not with language— he allows their elegant forms to shift the content into a new arena.”

4

Dana Moore

Celia Johnson Tattoo for Loos, 2012 encaustic and alkyd on wood panel, 10.25 x 8.875 inches

“Subtle shifts in picture plane and a sophisticated palette makes Winter Show newcomer Celia Johnson’s works on panel reverberate beyond their modest size.”

Edie Carpenter

Lisa Klakulak Framed, 2009 Steve Mann Merino and Finn/Rambouillet wool fleece, cotton sewing thread, waxed linen, plastic tubing, magnetic closure; wet felted, naturally dyed, free-motion machine embroidered embossing, hand stitched construction, shellac stiffened, 12 x 10 x 4.5 inches

“Lisa Klakulak uses felted wool, with its traditions in various cultures over time, to express our human need for comfort and self-protection. She describes her handbags as ‘tools for defense’.”

Benjamin Billingsley Days of Dark Miracles, 2011 woodcut on paper, 21 x 40 inches

“Every corner in this woodcut print is activated, creating a tension between the circling animal world and the mysterious metropolis in Billingsley’s cityscape.”

Edie Carpenter

7

Eric Serritella Peace Teapot III, 2011 stoneware, 7 x 18 x 4 inches

“This peace symbol of birch bark is a functioning ceramic teapot. Eric is known for his trompe l’oeil sculptures inspired by nature and the aesthetic of Asian art. ”

Angela Wells boots & butts, 2006 copperplate photogravure, edition of 5 image size: 14 x 14 inches, paper size: 20 x 20 inches

“Angela Wells’ photogravure from the ongoing series entitled “parts & labor” registers the worn surfaces and haphazard details of used objects that take on a haunting beauty, echoing the working hours of men and women no longer present.”

Edie Carpenter

9

David K. Chatt Glasses and Pearls, 2013 Glass beads sewn over found objects, 9 x 9 x 3 inches

“David is a master of this genre. This piece is particularly interesting to me for the way he’s “gilding the lily”— taking decorative objects and enshrining them in ways which recast their characters as sculptural.“

Dana Moore

Brock Gordon Huck and Jim, 2012 acrylic on panel, 24 x 24 inches

“Brock Gordon’s treatment of Twain’s iconic characters creates a dialogue with the past in which old and new meet in the reflected light and diagonal movement of the river’s surface.”
