DRIVING INVESTMENT IN THE UK’S GREEN ECONOMY
Financing vital new infrastructure In over 200 communities right across the UK we’ve taken on the complex and challenging projects, large and small. Each of these projects needed our help to go ahead and will generate renewable power, keep waste out of landfill, and reduce our energy use.
Mobilising private capital We’re working with over 70 co-investors to drive investment in the UK’s green economy. For every £1 we invest, we bring in £3 of additional private capital for UK-based green projects.
Innovating so others can follow We’re leading the way in financing new technologies, helping to create new markets, and building new financial products. Because we are doing this on fully commercial terms we are encouraging other private investors to join us and follow us.
Delivering a UK-wide impact Our activity is supporting the introduction of new innovative technologies on a large scale, strengthening the UK’s supply chain, creating thousands of new jobs, and helping to lower the cost of renewable energy and energy efficiency.

“ The UK Green Investment Bank plays a vital role in demonstrating to the wider market that investment in green infrastructure can be a profitable business to be in, helping attract new sources of capital to invest in sectors they might not otherwise have considered.

“ The climate finance world has been a better place since the UK Green Investment Bank arrived. Their shade of green is very attractive – tinged with financial and environmental professionals, creativity, and serious firepower. On the strength of our first operations with them I look forward to many more.”
Christopher Knowles Head of Climate Change and Environment Division European Investment Bank
TEG Biogas, Dagenham — Taking on the challenging projects to build vital infrastructure
This project is London’s first commercial anaerobic digestion facility, turning food and garden waste into renewable power, heat for a nearby recycling facility, and fertiliser for local farms. It was stuck at the design stage because it couldn’t raise the finance it needed. Our early commitment gave confidence to other investors, allowing the developer to fully finance the project. It was built on time, under budget and is now fully operational. We’re helping to finance this type of replicable infrastructure right across the UK.
Westermost Rough, Yorkshire — De-risking investment in innovative offshore wind technology
We’ve achieved a series of financing firsts in our investment in the Westermost Rough offshore wind farm. We’ve backed the first ever commercial use of the new next-generation 6MW turbine, invested in a wind farm which is still under construction, and refinanced part of our equity stake. We’ve helped bring a number of new investors to the offshore wind sector, as well as taking a significant step in reducing the cost of power from offshore wind. It’s this kind of financial innovation which will support the ongoing growth of the sector and the UK’s green economy.
Green Loan — Helping local authorities make the switch to low energy streetlighting
Lighting our streets can account for as much as 30% of a local authority’s energy consumption. To help reduce this, we’ve created an innovative new financial product – the Green Loan – to help local authorities make the switch to low energy streetlighting. Glasgow City Council, Scotland’s largest local authority, will be the first council to use the loan to replace tens of thousands of traditional streetlights with energy efficient LED lights, with the cost of repayments covered by their energy savings. We are working to replicate this across the UK.
DRIVING INVESTMENT IN THE UK’S GREEN ECONOMY
We’ve got ambitious plans to back many more green, profitable, innovative projects over the coming years; driving further investment into a greener, stronger UK economy.
