Editor’s Note

I

t’s a cliché, but I can’t believe another year has come and gone so quickly. It seems like just a few short months ago I was typing up my introduction to 2016. A lot has happened this year. Several prominent and beloved celebrities and icons passed away; a new president was elected and we said goodbye to a political era; we’ve made countless technological and healthcare leaps; we’ve seen major advancements in energy and automobile technology; and much more. I always enjoy reflecting on the past year and also looking ahead to what the next year has in store. In our January Rejuvenation and Wellbeing issue we feature two articles on the time-old tradition of New Year’s resolutions, focusing on how to make and keep them in 2017, and an uncomplicated resolution idea: simplify your life for a healthier, more sustainable, and more financially viable future. You’ll also find health and wellness articles to inspire a healthy diet and lifestyle in the New Year. Learn how to eat like your spine depends on it; explore the Mediterranean ways of eating;

EAT LIKE YOUR SPINE

DEPENDS ON IT BY DR. IGOR YUSUPOV

T

here are so many considerations when it comes to the food we eat. Where did the food come from? Is it organic or fair-trade? How many calories will it add to my day? What are the benefits of eating this versus eating something DR. IGOR YUSUPOV else? These are probably questions you’ve asked yourself before sitting down to break bread, but have you ever wondered how your diet impacts your nervous system or bone health? Maintaining healthy bones – especially the spine – is something that you’ll be grateful for as you age. Diet has a significant impact on the overall wellbeing of our skeletal and neurological systems, but it’s something you should think about now to ensure future health. Here are a few tips to consider:

6 greenliving | January 2017

1

CULTIVATE A DIET HIGH IN CALCIUM. Women are at particularly high risk of osteoporosis – a disorder in the body where the bones become weak and brittle – as they age, but it can affect men as well. A diet high in calcium, along with moderate exercise, can help to stave off the disease, which can wreak havoc on the spine and hips, causing pinched and painful nerves or even spinal fractures. Talk to your doctor to see if you’re at risk and to determine if you have enough calcium in your diet. For most women, it’s advisable to take a calcium supplement that also contains vitamin D.

2

PRIORITIZE FOODS THAT ARE NUTRIENT RICH. A balanced diet rich in vitamins, complex carbohydrates and essential fatty acids is good for overall wellness and the long-term health of the spine and bones. Focus on whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and low-fat protein sources.

NUTRITION

3

BALANCE THE FOOD GROUPS. Having the appropriate amount of sustenance from each of the five food groups will help keep your neurological system at peak performance, improving cognition, memory and focus. Additionally, eating fewer high-fat foods will prevent plaque build-up in the bloodstream that can lead to stroke.

4

MAINTAIN A HEALTHY WEIGHT. Excess weight puts unnecessary stress on all of the joints, including the spine. This stress results in accelerated wear and tear on connective tissue. In the lower back, this can lead to various problems, including bulging or herniated discs.

Many of these potential problems can be addressed with minimally invasive surgery, but it’s better to avoid surgical solutions in the first place by staying healthy and maintaining a well-balanced diet. Dr. Igor Yusupov founded Arizona Brain and Spine Center in 2010. A neurosurgeon committed to minimally invasive techniques that allow for faster recovery, Dr. Igor’s practice also specializes in neuro-vascular, neurooncology, and complex spinal deformity. 5

STAY HYDRATED. In today’s caffeine-fueled society, it can be hard to put down the coffee cup and pick up a glass of water. But our bodies are about 60 percent water, and drinking it is vital to keeping things running smoothly. Joint connections inevitably dry as we age, creating problems; but that damage can be mitigated by staying hydrated.

WHY YOUR PANTRY SHOULD GET A

MEDITERRANEAN MAKEOVER BY MICHELE REDMOND

I

f your pantry doesn’t inspire dreams of a Mediterranean vacation, it may be time for a food rehaul. Adding Mediterranean staples to your non-perishable food storage can increase the flavor and nutrition of your family meals. Jarred, dried, cured MICHELE REDMOND and fermented foods have a long shelf life, ensuring your kitchen will always be stocked with the quick, nourishing meals found on Greek seaports and Italian farms. The Mediterranean diet offers diverse foods, making it easy to go Medi with your pantry staples. Traditionally, the daily menu is plant-based with fish, shellfish, poultry, eggs and dairy eaten in small portions throughout the week.

Vegetables, beans, cooking grains, cereals, breads, nuts, seeds, fruits and olive oil dominate the Mediterranean eating style. These foods offer ready-to-go ingredients for dozens of flavorful meals and appetizers. Staples can be categorized into protein, fiber (grains, vegetables and fruit) and flavor-boosting ingredients. Mix and match categories to create wholesome appetizers, side dishes and meals. For example, pick a protein staple (cannellini beans), add flavorful veggies (sun-dried tomatoes, kalamata olives and artichoke hearts), then toss with olive oil, vinegar and chili flakes for a quick, fuss-free main dish salad. While a Mediterranean diet can save you time in the kitchen, it also improves heart health thanks to phytonutrients: high fiber foods and omega-3 fatty acids that contribute to decreases in insulin resistance, cholesterol and

inflammation and improved glucose metabolism. Weight control, improved brain function, and reduced risk of cancer are other potential benefits. The word “diet” evokes hassles, failures and eating restrictions, but foods from the Mediterranean offer balanced, flavorful, nutrient-rich eating. This way of cooking embraces the original meaning of “diet” as the daily habit of eating for pleasure, meals with family and friends, and making time to appreciate food. WAYS TO ELIMINATE TOXINS AND REBALANCE HORMONES BY BONNIE ROILL

I

f it’s January, it must be detox season! We are constantly battling foreign chemicals or toxins that are both commercially created and naturally occurring. Our bodies are exposed to BONNIE ROILL these damaging intruders through the food we eat, the water we drink, the air we breathe, and by what comes into contact with our skin. The body’s detoxification system is brilliantly designed to eliminate toxins. However, when the amount of toxins exceeds the body’s ability to break down these compounds, or an individual’s detox organs are compromised through diet, lifestyle, health status, or genetic factors, additional support is needed. There are more than 800 known environmental toxins, called endocrine disruptors (EDs) since they alter hormones in the body. EDs mimic hormones and fool the body into thinking they’re the real thing. They cause mischief by increasing certain hormones, decreasing others, turning one hormone into another, stopping or re-routing the messages hormones communicate between cells, and even competing with essential nutrients. One common ED that affects the thyroid gland is perchlorate. Produce, milk, and clear food packaging are the most common sources of perchlorate. This chemical competes with the nutrient iodine, which is necessary for proper functioning thyroid glands. This results in a sluggish metabolism, leading to easy weight gain.

10 greenliving | January 2017

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are a diverse group of chemicals found in a variety of things like herbicides, flame retardants used on furniture, non-stick pans and stain repellents. These toxins live a long life and can snuggle in body fat tissue for years. POPs affect the thyroid gland and lower testosterone levels. Bisphenol A (BPA) is the most recognized ED and is linked to breast cancer, obesity, reduced testosterone and early puberty through its effects on estrogen levels. It is found in plastic-based bottles, toys, thermal paper used for receipts and airline suitcase tags, canned food lining, and even paper towels. Studies have shown that more than 90 percent of Americans test positive for BPA in the urine. TAKE THE PROACTIVE APPROACH AND START A DAILY DETOX BY FOLLOWING THESE FIVE TIPS: Two cups of green tea a day provides the richest source of Epigallocatechin-3-Gallate (EGCG), a phytonutrient that triggers genes and enzymes involved in the breakdown of POPs. Maximize the concentration of EGCG by steeping your tea for at least five minutes.

1

2

Spinach, kale, arugula and Swiss chard are rich in indole-3-carbinol, a natural detoxifier that contributes to regulating estrogen levels. Pulverizing spinach in smoothies releases detoxpromoting nutrients. Rotate greens to benefit from their unique profiles. greenlivingaz.com

HEALTH & WELLNESS BONUS TIP

3

Broccoli contains sulforaphane (sulfur) needed to complete detoxifying enzymes. Adding powdered mustard seeds to boiling water while cooking broccoli can increase the formation of sulforaphanes.

During the detox process, fiber captures estrogen. Too little fiber means estrogen is recycled and returned to cells instead of being excreted. Your primary source of daily fiber should come from fresh organic vegetables, fruits, beans, seeds and nuts. As a secondary source, fiber supplements can fill in the gap of reaching at least 30 grams of fiber per day.

4

Keep perchlorates from leaching into foods by repackaging foods and liquids into glass or ceramic containers. Perchlorates are found everywhere due to contamination of groundwater, so your daily plate should include foods known to activate enzymes that break down toxins for easy release. Examples include pomegranate seeds, cranberries, blueberries and oranges.

5

Avoid conventionally fed meats since this is a source of two types of POPs – dioxin and PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls). These POPs have been associated with a change in metabolism, affecting the body’s ability to sustain weight loss. Purchase organic, grass-fed beef and bison to avoid this exposure. You’ll also reduce exposure to estrogen added to the feed.

CONSCIOUS RESOLUTIONS FOR A BETTER NEW YEAR BY DR. MELANIE DIAS

J

anuary 1st seems to jolt everyone to stop for a few and put pen to paper, listing those important goals for the next 365 days. Does that list look familiar? Most of us record the same New Year’s resolutions from the previous year. If you are DR. MELANIE DIAS one who slips into “resolution burnout” within a month, your physical state could be the reason. What we eat, think and do affects our internal function, and this in turn affects our motivation to commit.

New YOU Resolutions. It’s All In Your Head If a new calendar triggers anxiety about sticking to your plan, try these strategies to create a solid foundation for success this time around:

12 greenliving | January 2017

1

SET GOALS WHEN YOU HAVE A CLEAR MIND. Reasons for brain fog and focus issues usually go beyond over scheduling and overdoing habits. These include neurotransmitter imbalances, infections, leaky gut, leaky blood-brain barrier or an autoimmune condition. Functional and nervous system evaluations by your chiropractic and medical providers can identify the underlying physiology. Collaborative care can help clear the fog and improve your life on many levels.

2

KEEP IT FLOWING. MOVEMENT IS LIFE. A stagnant, unhealthy digestive system and sedentary habits lower your immune system and affect brain function. Waking up to a cup of hot water with lemon and ginger can help facilitate a bowel movement within minutes. A brisk walk in nature clears the mind and stimulates creativity. Consider natural therapies to resolve health issues under the guidance of a qualified physician.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

3

TAKE A BREATH, DON’T CATCH YOUR BREATH. When we focus on everything but ourselves, we tend not to breathe properly. This leads to tight, painful necks, headaches, poor posture and adrenal burnout. Lie or sit back and practice 10 cycles of deep, slow inhalations and exhalations. Make sure your belly expands and contracts with each breath. This improves focus and brings you to a rational state of consciousness.

4

EACH DAY IS A GIFT. Honoring each day with a moment of gratitude for at least one thing sets the stage for attracting more abundance in your life.

Most of us record the same New Year’s resolutions from the previous year. If you are one who slips into “resolution burnout” within a month, your physical state could be the reason.

602.615.2486 www.facebook.com/NewViewHealthyEating Workshops, Cooking Classes, Events, Retreats

5

SIMPLIFY YOUR LIFE. Small, simple steps towards each goal should be mapped. This may be one of your resolutions, so why not activate it now?

6

GIVING IS GETTING. Volunteering in your community will boost your “feel good” hormones which feed your own purpose and clarity. Strength is in numbers. Inspiring others to join you helps fuel the movement towards creating a safer, healthier community.

7

BELIEVE YOU CAN DO THIS! SET GOALS WITH CERTAINTY. If you doubt your ability to reach the finish line or you’re not sure how to get there, consider a coach to hold you accountable. Investing in services of a holistic, licensed practitioner or doctor who combines coaching with therapeutic intervention will leverage your investment of time and money. Use your New Year as an opportunity to step back and look at your life and how you are living it, without judgment or selfcriticism. Celebrate your wins and approach challenges with a healthier mindset. This can be the greatest gift to you and your loved ones. For each year that passes, the time left becomes even more valuable. View the big picture. How do you want to live 10, 15, 20 years from now? Everything you do, eat and think now will impact your quality of life in the future.

Paca de Paja B&B • Tucson, AZ • pacadepaja.com As in other rural areas of state, La Paz County remains exempt from severe restrictions on groundwater pumping that are imposed on Phoenix, Tucson and other large Arizona cities. Thus, China, Japan and the Middle East will continue to vie for scarce Arizona groundwater in places like La Paz County, even as drought conditions persist. This is not a formula for sustainability. La Paz, of course, is Spanish for “the peace,” but the name reflects a page of regional history as well. It was taken in 1983 from the early settlement (now ghost town) of La Paz along the Colorado River. Now, in the years following the last census in 2010, the county’s population has seen its first decline since formation. The region’s existing harsh climate clearly does not lend itself to expansive population growth, but the county does depend on a healthy tourism economy and the human services needed to support it. The foremost challenge for La Paz County may now be to balance the population needed to support its tourism and agricultural economy with the forces working against it in the form of punishing heat and drought.

A NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION RECOMMENDATION: SIMPLIFY BY CHRISTOPHER WHARTON, PHD

A

s a new year begins, it’s time to reflect on years past and what we’d like to gain in the future. While efforts to be healthier are always laudable, I offer one thought for your consideration: rather than CHRISTOPHER WHARTON, PHD adopting a new faddish dietary plan or exercise regimen, maybe try something different that sets the stage not only for a healthier lifestyle, but one that is more sustainable, more affordable, and happier, too. Try simplicity. What we know from health behavior research is that it’s really hard for people to make healthy changes in their lives. And even when they’re successful, we know it’s all too easy to fall back to old, less healthy behaviors. Why? The answer is that when we change health behaviors, like how we eat or how much we exercise, that change still exists within a lifestyle built to make sedentary behavior and unhealthy eating the default behaviors. It’s a lifestyle of lots of TV-watching (Americans watch, on average, 35 hours of TV a week), and lots of driving (Americans spend an average of 45 minutes commuting to work every day). In other words, it’s a lifestyle built on sedentary behavior leaving little time to enjoy healthy meals prepared at home. For the first time in history, Americans spend more money on food away from the home than food for in-home consumption. VOLUNTARY SIMPLICITY This is where “voluntary simplicity” comes in. Voluntary simplicity is an attempt to simplify one’s life so that the healthy choice is the default. It’s also usually the more sustainable and cost-effective choice.

16 greenliving | January 2017

Perhaps you start small, making only two simple changes this year. The average American household owns and operates two cars (to the tune of about $17,000 per year). What if you simplified to a one-car lifestyle? You’d save potentially $8,000 a year, reduce your CO2 emissions by about five tons, and you’d make it a part of your life to occasionally walk, bike or run to complete short-distance errands. Research has shown time and again that active transportation (like biking to the gym or to work) improves mood and health simultaneously. Similarly, what if you decided to ditch your TV? That could open up hours of time in the evenings and on weekends, giving you the chance to make healthy meals at home or to be more active. Not paying for cable can save you hundreds or thousands of dollars a year. Additionally, research suggests that avoiding food and beverage ads makes it easier to eat healthier, both for you and your kids. As countercultural as it might seem, these two steps are simple by design and may not be as extreme as other things we try (like never eating carbs again). Simplifying means you can have greater success resolving to adopt a healthier, more sustainable, and perhaps more financially sound life, all at once. PHILANTHROPY, ART AND HEALTH HOW BILLIE JO HERBERGER DOES HER PART BY GRETCHEN PAHIA

S

he is known for her philanthropy and performing arts – supporting the Phoenix Heart Ball, Key to the Cure (TGen), Release the Fear, Kids Read USA, Herberger Theater, Phoenix Theatre, Valley Youth Theatre, Phoenix GRETCHEN PAHIA Art Museum, Arizona Opera and others – but Valley resident Billie Jo Herberger is also passionate about exercise and leading a conscious life. Herberger, who has long been a staple in Phoenix’s art scene, is looking to ensure the longevity of not only her life but the life of her community. Billie Jo and her husband Judd live at the Scottsdale Waterfront, and due to the convenience of restaurants, entertainment and arts nearby, they walk nearly everywhere. For Herberger, it’s all about walkability and ease, sometimes going days without using their car. Her love for the outdoors

18 greenliving | January 2017

goes back to her childhood, living near and growing up around the beach in California. A surfer girl at heart, she cares deeply about ocean conservation and the longevity of our environment overall. She also has an affinity for mermaids and creates her own custom jewelry using gems and other natural materials. Additionally, she shies away from big-box stores and prefers to make her own creative clothes using old kimonos and other fabrics. Herberger loves attending performances across the Valley. For her, it is all about creating awareness for the arts and continuing to show her support. “I love to support the theater, and I am so proud of what goes on all over Phoenix and surrounding areas,” she said. One arts project that is near and dear to her heart is the Canal Convergence and ongoing art installations along the canals. The Herbergers are large supporters and enjoy being able to look out their window and see people walking along the canals, enjoying the vibrant environment.

Left: A surfer girl at heart, Billie Jo cares deeply about ocean conservation and the longevity of our environment overall.

The importance of her neighborhood’s walkability isn’t just about reducing their carbon footprint; there is definitely a fitness component for the philanthropist. Having taught Physical Education for a number of years and owning a company that did dance and yoga-water exercises (Wet and Wonderful Water Exercise), keeping her body healthy is a key to remaining happy. “Everything about my past life is a part of my present life. Sometimes I enjoy walking out on my terrace and spending

20 minutes doing Tai Chi. It just gives me a peace and tranquility I enjoy,” she said. Herberger and her family are respectful to their bodies, their personal health and the health of those in the community. They admire the green movement and are very conscious about what they put into their bodies, in addition to reducing their waste stream by recycling and not wasting food. The Herbergers have five children; their daughter is a vegetarian and they also have a grandson who enjoys growing his own produce. Billie Jo and Judd are also known to be “overconscious” about their grocery habits – only buying what they need to ensure nothing goes to waste. While they don’t pressure others around them to live the same lifestyle, the Herbergers are most certainly committed to doing whatever they can to ensure that the health of the environment and the arts remain for many generations to come. TEMPE-BASED SOLAR POOL TECHNOLOGIES

WINS ECO TANK COMPETITION BY STEVEN G. ZYLSTRA

A

rizona has seen significant growth in companies providing large-scale, green and ecofriendly technology solutions. The products coming out of Arizona have made a tremendous impact on the country’s sustainability initiatives. STEVEN G. ZYLSTRA However, the work that is done at a micro-level by eco-tech startups is also on the rise. In December, Green Living magazine hosted the first Simple Solutions Summit community event in Tempe. In addition to local vendor booths and expert breakout sessions, the event featured an Eco Tank competition. This startup competition looked at eco-friendly innovations on a smaller scale, and promoted the valuable work our clean technology startup community is doing to reduce our carbon footprint.

20 greenliving | January 2017

The overall goal of the event was to increase awareness of Arizona’s current green initiatives including air quality, education, energy, food, waste and water. The Eco Tank competition was unique in that presenters were not permitted a slide deck or projector, and only allotted three minutes to explain the success and sustainability of their product to the judges. Tempe-based Solar Pool Technologies (SPT) won the competition for its revolutionary robotic solar-powered pool cleaner: the Solar-Breeze NX. The company’s invention uses sunlight instead of grid electricity to effortlessly remove dirt, debris, pollens and even suntan oils from a pool’s surface. SPT was awarded $5,000 in advertising from Green Living magazine and business consulting from LaunchFrog, as well as a SEED SPOT scholarship. SPT closely challenged four other local companies: BetR-block, NOID, Incycle and FilterZen, who also presented excellent ideas in green technology.

Left: Denis Ruzsa, co-founder and COO demonstrating the old ways of pool cleaning. Right: Paul Sim, co-owner and CEO presenting about Solar-Breeze NX.

“We had a great time going up against so many wonderful companies and fellow entrepreneurs during the Eco Tank, and we’re really honored that the judges saw the value of our Solar-Breeze NX and believe in what we’re doing,” said Paul Sim, co-owner and CEO of Solar Pool Technologies. “As a growing startup, we are thrilled with the free advertising and the opportunity to participate in SEED SPOT. This was a great way to end the year!” Overall, the competition represented the great progress that the green technology startup community has made. The success of SPT also presents a case study to review as an example of how to succeed as an eco-tech startup in Arizona. After launching its original solar-powered pool cleaner in 2010, SPT was successful, but only to a certain point. They continued gaining ground in the market through 2014, but ran out of money by 2015 due to the costs of manufacturing and supply chain management. They were no longer able to sustain a pathway to develop new products. In August of 2015, the company began a Kickstarter campaign to develop the new Solar-Breeze NX, and successfully raised $400,000. Today, the future of the company is bright. The money made through Kickstarter and the services won at the Simple Solutions Summit will go a long way towards the continued success of the Solar-Breeze NX. SPT plans to use some of its remaining money and the awarded advertising services towards a marketing campaign to increase awareness of the company and its product across the country. Its goal is to reach nearly one million pool owners. The rest of the money will go towards continuing to improve the technology of the Solar-Breeze NX. It is important for Arizona’s technology community to continue to support companies like SPT. These organizations and innovators are making a difference as both eco-friendly businesses and success stories. They serve as role models for the startups in our market who are also developing products to enact important social change. Bringing into balance the conservation and preservation of the Earth’s natural resources with human culture is a goal that is gaining importance as the world’s population continues to grow. The technology community has a big role to play in the success of a green lifestyle for us all. Steven G. Zylstra, Sc.D. (Hon.), serves as president and CEO of the Arizona Technology Council, where he is responsible for strategy, operations and accomplishment of policy development. Zylstra is a vocal spokesman for the value that technology can provide in raising social and economic standards in Arizona. He has served in numerous technology advisory roles to Arizona Governor Doug Ducey and currently serves on several association, industry and community boards. SUSTAINABILITY GOALS AND INITIATIVES BY BRET SCROGGINS

T

he 2017 Phoenix Final Four host committee is challenging themselves to make the events the most sustainable to date. The Phoenix Local Organizing Committee (PLOC) has assembled a team of sustainability experts to work with the NCAA to leave a lasting impact and legacy following the Final Four. This team will be tasked with coordinating projects such as Fan Fest and Music Fest in Downtown Phoenix to ensure they are environmentally friendly events that leave little footprint. The PLOC will strive to create a plan to improve transportation methods, energy efficiency, water quality, reduced carbon output, recycling, and waste diversion during the games and events. A scorecard and playbook will be created to showcase the progressive change and legacy the games have left in the state of Arizona. The playbook will highlight the Phoenix Final Four’s accomplishments and suggest areas of improvement that will then be passed along to future Final Four committees to further advance sustainability initiatives with the college basketball tournament. TRANSPORTATION: • A partnership with Grid Bikes bike share program to encourage visitors and locals to reduce fossil fuel use during the events. • Bike valets placed throughout the Final Four events to help facilitate and encourage attendees to bike to the events. • Designated RideShare pickup and drop off locations at all events. • No Idle Zones at events to reduce greenhouse gasses and promote air quality.

THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY IN METRO PHOENIX BY BHARAT VENKATESH

W

hen one talks about sustainable cities in the U.S., Phoenix is certainly a hot topic – but unfortunately for not all the right reasons. The Phoenix Metropolitan area is the 12th largest in the country by population and continues to grow at a constantly accelerating pace, even though it already makes up over two-thirds of the entire state population. This sprawling population generates over a million tons of trash each year. Still, all is not lost. The City of Phoenix is undergoing heavy undertakings to improve sustainability, dealing with carbon emissions, waste management, water stewardship, land use, clean air, parks and open spaces. Apart from these measures, there is one strategy that could cover many problems at once: the circular economy. A linear economy is known to accelerate economic development, albeit at the cost of a tremendous amount of resources that Phoenix is unable to provide. As such, only the restorative and regenerative advantages of a circular economy can revive the natural resources of Metro Phoenix while maintaining its continuous growth – and it is fitting, considering that the mythical Phoenix is a bird of rebirth. In October, the U.S. Chamber conducted a Circular Economy in Action tour to display several local companies’ efforts. INTEL ARIZONA With more than 11,000 employees, Intel Arizona is the company’s second largest site in the U.S. Its Chandler campus is also the largest employer in Arizona. In addition to having a calculated $5.3 billion annual impact on the state’s economy, the company can be considered one of the champions of environmental stewardship and serves as an example for

26 greenliving | January 2017

sustainability standards not only in the state but worldwide. The Phoenix Business Journal ranked Intel first in regards to the amount of LEEDcertified space in Phoenix, and its green building design standards suffuse its Chandler and Ocotillo campuses, with the newest R&D facility in Chandler receiving LEED Gold certification. Water management and a robust recycling program are flagships of Intel Arizona’s sustainability program. MAYO CLINIC Ranked first among hospitals not only in Arizona but the entire country, the Mayo Clinic focuses on their patients first. However, they certainly understand that there is a link between the health of their patients and that of the environment. Five key aspects of sustainability at the clinic are energy management, waste stream, supply chain, industry engagement and built environment. To minimize replacing items at both their Phoenix and Scottsdale campuses, they choose durable materials that can be recycled without compromising health care. This, along with a mostly paperfree environment, ensures that they minimize their waste stream. The Mayo Clinic also has sensors and monitoring

systems to regulate energy usage in rooms depending on the temperature, humidity and current usage, thereby halting unnecessary energy wastage in unused rooms. RECYCLED CITY, LLC A start-up food scraps hauler and recycler founded in January 2014, Recycled City already serves a customer base of more than 500 residential and 50 commercial accounts as of 2016. They divert approximately 15 tons of food waste from Phoenix Metro area landfills every week, which is entirely converted into compost at local farms and community gardens. The compost is either used on-site to support farming operations or returned to residential customers for their own home gardens. Each customer receives an airtight bin and bag of bokashi (to help break down the compost) that is picked up every week or biweekly, allowing customers to recycle their uneaten leftovers and food scraps to generate local food. RESOURCE INNOVATION CAMPUS In 2013, the City of Phoenix Public Works Department, under Mayor Greg Stanton and City Council members, announced Reimagine Phoenix, a city-wide sustainability initiative working to divert 40 percent of waste from local landfills. John Trujillo, the director of Public Works, envisions the program as a circular economy system where solid waste is transformed into products with utility. As for the Resource Innovation Campus, it encompasses a site intended to drive economic growth and increase job availability by gathering innovators and proposals that can generate ideas to repurpose and reuse trash, thereby converting them into valuable resources. The campus consists of the 27th Avenue Transfer Station, Municipal Recycling Facility, a composting program, an under-construction compost facility, an artist in residency program, Palm Silage (a company that turns palm fronds into animal feed), as well as the future home of the Technology Solutions Incubator.

WHY PARTNERSHIP IS THE NEW LEADERSHIP BY TY BENNETT

O

ver a five-year period a survey was conducted of more than 5,000 leaders. These men and women were in leadership positions in multiple industries and at every level, from supervisors to CEOs, managers to TY BENNETT C-suite executives. In this survey, only one question was asked: As a leader, what do you want from your people? More than 75 percent answered with the one-word response: Commitment. That’s what we want, isn’t it? We want our employees to be dedicated, to be all-in. We want them to be passionate and loyal. We want them to give their very best because they want to, not because they have to. We want them to be committed. But here is the key: people are not committed to jobs. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that today’s average worker will hold 10 different jobs before age 40 and will have 15 to 20 jobs by the time they retire. People are ultimately committed to people. It’s relationships that engender trust, respect, accountability and commitment. The old adage said, “Leadership is based on title, position or authority.” But people don’t follow titles – they follow people. Have you ever heard the saying, “People join companies but leave bosses?” It’s the leadership they are committed to. That’s why in today’s world, partnership is the new leadership. A new economy requires a new approach to leadership, and if what we want as leaders is the commitment of our people, then we need to partner with them in order to foster an environment that naturally creates commitment. 28 greenliving | January 2017

The idea of “partnership is the new leadership” is the rallying cry for effective management in today’s world. In the 1980s, Ken Blanchard changed the conversation from management to leadership and began to refocus, retool and renew the approach to leadership. Our world has continued to change since then and at an even faster pace. To be relevant, influential and successful today, partnership in leadership needs to be the approach. Title does not give you the right to be heard, value does. In today’s world, people don’t want to be talked at, they want to be talked with. Partner leaders approach leadership by building relationships, adding value, involving their people and communicating in a conversational manner. That’s what makes them the type of leaders that make people better, the type of leaders that create buy-in, and the type of leaders that inspire a culture of commitment. What every leader says they want from their people is commitment, but the truth is, the ultimate commitment is when our people step up as leaders themselves, when they take an ownership mentality, when they see the same vision we see and act accordingly. The ultimate goal of partner leadership is to create more leaders. That is not only what today’s world needs, but also what it demands. Ty Bennett is the author of four books including “Partnership is The New Leadership.” He is a sought after keynote speaker and leadership trainer. Learn more at tybennett.com. FIVE SIDE EFFECTS OF HAVING CLEAR VISION IN BUSINESS BY CAREY CONLEY

P

artnership in leadership is extremely effective; additionally, a clear vision is needed to lead yourself and others. I talk to many people every month through coaching and at networking events, and the first question I ask them is if they CAREY CONLEY have a vision for their life and/or their business. Most people say yes, but the next question I ask makes all the difference: can they show me their vision in written, detailed form? As you can predict, most times the answer is no. That next step is crucial and can help clear up a lot of things that people – especially entrepreneurs – are struggling with today.

1 2 3 4 5

The vision has to come first in order to write intentional, quantitative, time-bound goals you will stick to and stay consistent. Most people are winging it when it comes to goal setting which is why most people quit before reaching them. You will be able to make better decisions with regards to how to spend your money and time, and who to spend it with.

Your vision becomes your anchor during the storm. Ever wanted to quit the goal you set to achieve? When your vision is so important to you that it is like oxygen it will propel you to keep going even on the hardest days.

You can’t influence others or make an impact in someone’s life (including your own) if you don’t have a vision you can articulate clearly. Vision is leadership; leading yourself and others.

Lastly, without a vision it is very easy to not only get discouraged from time to time but could get to a point where you lose all hope.

Carey Conley is the founder of Infinite Nation, a company that supports and guides entrepreneurs through vision mentoring and training. She believes every entrepreneur has a special mission to accomplish during their lifetime and being part of a supportive community is one of the keys to success. PLANET-SAVING SOLUTIONS FOR 2017 BY JOJO CARAMELLO

A

s professional organizers, my sister Debbie and I are committed to our client’s success and the success of the planet. With every organizing job, we strive for zero landfill. When helping people to simplify and streamline their lives, JOJO CARAMELLO we have found that most care deeply about sustainability and conservation as well. In fact, a big part of why people are reluctant to let things go is that they don’t want to “just throw things in the trash,” and for good reason. Being that January is officially “Get Organized Month,” here’s to out with the old in the hopes to renew! Below are a few of our favorite Planet Saving Solutions to help you let go of what you no longer need or want and how you can benefit your community and the planet simultaneously. CELL PHONES Did you know that less than 20 percent of old cell phones are recycled? This means that over 80 percent end up cluttering drawers in our homes, or are thrown into the landfill and end up breaking down and leaching toxins into our land and water. Did you also know recycling old cell phones through conservation-based organizations like The Phoenix Zoo can help save the Congo? Columbite-tantalite – also known as “coltan” – is just one of many chemicals used in the manufacturing of electronics, and is mined in the Congo. Our demand for the latest and greatest gadgets is destroying the habitat of the already endangered lowland gorillas in the Congo. When you recycle old cell phones, the coltan from our old devices is extracted and recycled to use in new electronics. This, in turn, reduces the demand for new mining.

30 greenliving | January 2017

CLOTHING AND SHOES When old clothing, denim, linens, shoes and sneakers have outlived their usefulness, recycle them! Businesses like Phoenix Fibers and Goodwill have bins in parking lots and drop-off points all over the Valley. Did you know that old sneaker soles can be recycled into sport court and foam playground surfaces? Old denim can be recycled into home and automobile insulation, and many other fibers are recycled into new ones. Old t-shirts and linen can be cut and repurposed into cleaning rags. Never throw away linens, clothes or shoes because they have holes or stains on them. They can always be recycled and reused. CDS, DVDS, AND ACCESSORIES Treasures4Teachers in Tempe is a great place to donate old CDs, DVDs, office supplies and odds and ends. On average, teachers spend $500.00 per year out of their own pockets to ensure student success. Treasures4Teachers is a nonprofit organization that enables teachers and educators to shop (for little to no cost) at their amazing warehouse for the supplies they need all year round. To avoid recluttering in the New Year, find opportunities to volunteer your time or expertise in your community. There are homeless shelters, animal rescues, food pantries and more who need our help to make the world a better place. May your 2017 be filled with joy and free of clutter! WILDLIFE

OPENS REMARKABLE

NEW FACILITY BY GAIL COCHRANE

A

ny animal lover who has found a featherless baby bird lying forlorn on a sidewalk, or come upon an injured raptor that’s flown into a window or been hit by a car, knows the overwhelming feeling of needing to find help, and quickly. Luckily, in the Valley of the Sun, we have one of the country’s premier wildlife rehabilitation foundations: Liberty Wildlife. For three decades, these skilled rehabilitators have been saving the lives of wild animals and caring for them until they can be released back to the wild. Along the way, Liberty Wildlife has developed a robust education outreach program that takes non-releasable wildlife into schools and to civic programs across the Valley. Hundreds of thousands of children and adults have met Liberty’s charismatic wildlife ambassadors and learned about them and our desert environment. The nonprofit partners with governments, utilities and corporations to reduce human impacts on wildlife. Additionally, the wildlife hotline comes to the aid of those of us who find injured or orphaned animals and need advice or assistance. Rescue volunteers may be dispatched in the case of larger and potentially dangerous injured birds and mammals. For years, Liberty Wildlife’s small staff and large cadre of volunteers did this important work from a small, under-equipped facility in Scottsdale. Finally, thanks to years of perseverance and some impressive donations, the Rob and Melani Walton Campus of Liberty Wildlife opened on the banks of the Salt River at the end of 2016.

The extraordinary facility is a model of sustainability, with on-site solar energy, rainwater collection, xeriscape landscaping and pollinator gardens. Natural history displays include a walk-through aviary and a living laboratory that houses reptile, amphibian and insect collections used in educational programs.

WILDLIFE

Education also remains a crucial aspect of Liberty Wildlife’s mission. Executive Director Megan Mosby stated, “Our Education Center will host presentations, films, speakers, and inter-classroom activities…Fill up the bus and bring your entire third grade! And, there is our beautiful amphitheater, the scene of many wildlife presentations and events. The grounds themselves provide nature and educational activities as the setting exemplifies all three of our natural biomes: upper Sonoran Desert, riparian and wetlands.” During orphan care season, cameras in foster care enclosures will allow the public to watch raptors caring for orphaned babies. Cameras mounted in restricted-access rehabilitation cages provide glimpses of the rehab process. Special windows also allow visitors a view into triage and surgery. Injured animals arriving at the new surgical hospital are given every possible opportunity. According to Operations Director Terry Stevens, “Depending on the initial exam outcome, an animal may go directly to the radiology room for digital x-rays, or if x-rays are not required, across the hall to the Intensive Care Unit. If a blood test or other microscopy is required, our new lab provides on-site testing, leading to quicker diagnoses and treatment. If surgery is indicated, our new surgical suite is ready.”

Liberty Wildlife is now open to the public! Tours are offered on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. The two-hour tours are limited to 10 people. Email laurah@libertywildlife.org for more information about Liberty Wildlife and to schedule a tour. ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

KYLLAN MANEY BUILDS A CAREER

FROM ART AND EDUCATION BY MICHELLE TALSMA EVERSON

I

f you’re at all familiar with the Phoenix art scene, you’ve likely heard of multifaceted artist Kyllan Maney. If you don’t know her by name, you’ve probably seen her work around town in the form of a local mural, in a gift or art shop, featured in a show, or online. MICHELLE TALSMA Instead of specializing in one EVERSON medium, Maney has made her mark by producing everything from wearable pieces to full-scale murals. She also shares her talents with others as a teacher and visual arts department chair at the New School for the Arts and Academics. “My work is rooted in observations in nature,” she said. “I love painting animals, most notably birds. I also love to paint flowers.” Maney explains that she has always been surrounded by art. Her grandmother used to paint in the kitchen and would share her art supplies; then, as a teen, her mother worked in art galleries in Scottsdale. In high school she learned graphic design and decided she wanted to be an artist. “After high school, I had a summer internship at the Smithsonian at the National Museum of Natural History,” she said. “I fell in love with botanical illustrations with that experience. I majored in fine art with a specialization in painting at Arizona State University where I received a BFA [bachelor’s of fine arts].” Maney has worked on murals across the Valley, including a Fry’s grocery store in Chandler, Blick Art Supply in Tempe, and The Dhaba in Tempe. She also did a temporary mural for the Art Place America Conference. In addition to her murals, her smaller works are sold at locations across the Valley and are also available on her personal website. “Recently, I have been abstracting my observations of flowers into radial patterns with a combination of sacred geometry,” Maney said about her most recent work. “I have been creating these works on repurposed maps. I find that maps are a visual record of our life’s time and place. They can hold a memory and a place of time that is different for each observer.” 36 greenliving | January 2017

While she focuses on her own personal art, Maney also helps the next generation discover their unique artistic voices. “My philosophy as a teacher is to help my students explore who they are and how they want to share that with the world,” she said. “My students and I work on collaborative art projects together as well as giving them experience working on my professional artist projects.” She and her students are currently working on a large-scale temporary mural, she added.

While a lot of Maney’s work is inspired by nature, she also keeps the environment in mind when creating her art. “I feel that as an artist it is important to be connected to nature and the planet. I like to use repurposed elements in my work quite often,” she said. “I find that there is beauty in something someone else would consider discarded. In the classroom, we are constantly repurposing. It saves money as well as teaches the students how to be resourceful with everyday items that are around them.” To learn more about Kyllan and her work, visit kyllanmaney.com. GREEN THUMB

BY RIC COGGINS

T

here is nothing more “green” than growing something! Plants take what we in the animal kingdom produce as waste, and give back pure oxygen to breathe, wonderful fruits and vegetables to eat, and natural fibers for clothing. But wishing to “live RIC COGGINS green” and successfully growing green things can be very different, especially in the diverse climates within Arizona’s regions. Many move to Arizona believing they have a green thumb only to puzzle over shriveled summer plants. Gardening newcomers can become confused by gardening books and online blogs that supply information meant for other parts of the country. Adding to the Arizona growing frustration, big box garden centers ship in beautiful tropical plants that cannot survive here, or they often sell plants months past the time when they should have been planted in Arizona. Please, don’t be discouraged! Arizona has amazing climates and microclimates in which one can grow a number of native and adapted edible and ornamental green plants. In fact, if you time it correctly, you can have two amazing garden seasons instead of just one! It doesn’t matter if you have an irrigated acre or a coffee can in a windowsill, you can grow beautiful flowers and amazing edibles in Arizona…pretty much year round!

If you would like to learn how to grow things in Arizona, then come back right here every month. Green Living magazine is joining forces with the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners Program to provide timely and climate-appropriate monthly gardening articles that will teach readers how to successfully grow thriving green plants.

If you time it correctly, you can have two amazing garden seasons instead of just one!

Arizona Master Gardeners are university-trained volunteers who serve as community educators. They work with the University of Arizona, providing research-based information on environmentally responsible gardening and landscaping to the public. We are excited about this new partnership and to hear from you about what you are growing and what you would like to learn. If you just can’t wait until the February issue, feel free to “Ask a Master Gardener.” University of Arizona Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners are frequently at local home shows to discuss your plant questions in person. You can also call on the “Plant Help Desk,” where Master Gardener volunteers answer phone calls and emails, helping to identify plants or pests and providing answers to your gardening questions. For more, call 602-827-8201, email maricopacountyplanthotline@gmail.com or visit 4341 E. Broadway Road in Phoenix. Ric Coggins is an Arizona Master Gardener who grew up on a one-acre garden tended to by his father, who was a regular contributor to organic gardening and farming magazines. G R E E N CHAMPIONS Each month in our Green Champions section we feature three people – one each in northern, central and southern Arizona – who are making strides in the green community. For our January Wellbeing and Rejuvenation issue, we feature those who promote meditation and wellness.

NORTHERN – SARAH MCLEAN OWNER, MCLEAN MEDITATION INSTITUTE

Sarah McLean is a contemporary meditation and mindfulness teacher who has been inspiring people to meditate for over 20 years. Sarah first learned about meditation while training in the U.S. Army as a Behavioral Specialist to help soldiers address PTSD. After the Army and college, Sarah took a nine-month mountain bike journey from Europe to Asia seeking secrets to peace and fulfillment. When she returned, she began her daily meditation practice and studied mind/body health with Dr. Deepak Chopra. She worked with him as the Program Director for the Chopra Center for Wellbeing in California. In 2001, she moved to Sedona and founded the McLean Meditation Institute. Her upcoming book, “Love & the Power of Attention” is due out next month. Sarah is also hosting a Satori Mindfulness Meditation Spa Retreat at the Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain Resort & Spa January 22-25.

CENTRAL – KC MILLER CHIEF SPIRITUAL OFFICER, FOUNDER AND DIRECTOR, SOUTHWEST INSTITUTE OF HEALING ARTS (SWIHA)

KC Miller is a longtime Reflexologist, Polarity Practitioner, Life Coach, Toe Reader and Ordained Minister. With her vision before her, KC founded Southwest Institute of Myotherapy (SWIM) in 1992. The tiny school flourished and grew rapidly, morphing into what it is today, the Southwest Institute of Healing Arts (SWIHA) in Tempe. At SWIHA, KC is dedicated to transforming lives and helping men and women achieve their dreams no matter where in the world they are. She feels that everyone should be given a fair chance through affordable holistic education, on-campus or online. KC has also been nominated for many awards and even interviewed on CNN to discuss the amazing and curious art of toe reading.

SOUTHERN – GEN KELSANG LINGPUR RESIDENT TEACHER, KADAMPA MEDITATION CENTER ARIZONA

Gen Kelsang Lingpur is the resident teacher of Kadampa Meditation Center Arizona in Tucson. She has been a student and disciple of Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche for almost 20 years. Gen Lingpur has been ordained as a Buddhist nun for many years and has taught for the New Kadampa Tradition in Arizona, California, New Mexico and Mexico. Having benefited greatly herself from the study of Buddha Dharma, she is happy to give back by sharing her love of Buddha’s teachings. With a down-to-earth style, Gen Lingpur helps people look at their situation in a new light, and to transform negative minds into positive ones.

KOMBUCHA

Product reviews by our eco-conscious couple John and Jennifer Burkhart If you’re aiming for a healthier you in 2017, probiotics should definitely be on the menu. With approximately 70 percent of the immune system located in the gut, it’s important to keep those little bugs in healthy balance. Kombucha tea can do just that. Before you wrinkle your nose (like Jen did!), read on about some very drinkable, organic, raw, good-for-your-gut teas! REVIVE KOMBUCHA | HIBISCUS BREW HERBAL REFRESHER HE SAID: This Revive drink seems to be missing one thing...the kombucha zing. It was refreshing and sweet with a tasty hibiscus flavor, but it was lacking that bite I’ve come to enjoy when I drink kombucha. If you’re new to kombucha, this is a good place to start.

SHE SAID: Wow, I didn’t know kombucha could taste like that! It reminded me of Sprite, without being sickeningly sweet. The hibiscus lends a slightly tart flavor, and for those who know kombucha, this one had virtually no vinegar taste. Excellent!

HUMM KOMBUCHA | STRAWBERRY LEMONADE HE SAID: Now, that’s more like it. This Humm kombucha has the classic vinegar bite that I’m used to, plus a sweet strawberry finish. I didn’t notice much of a lemonade taste, but that was quite alright. It has lovely effervescence as well.

SHE SAID: This drink is delightfully fizzy (less so than a soda) and sweet. I definitely tasted strawberry with a hint of sour lemonade and a light vinegar finish. If you’re feeling sluggish, you might want to sip one of these – the B12 content will have you bouncing off the walls in no time!

SOMA | COFFEE-BOOCHA HE SAID: When it’s time to clean the calcium out of our coffee maker, we run a vinegar and water mixture through it. It comes out slightly brown from the residual coffee in the machine. I have no doubt that the cleanser water tastes exactly like this kombucha. Save your money.

SHE SAID: As a coffee lover, I couldn’t pass this one up. I’ve never heard of “sprouted” coffee, let alone sprouted coffee kombucha. Turns out, I should have kept on walking. It tasted like Coke gone wrong, with a slight coffee aftertaste. Kudos for creativity, but just “no-ma.”

He gave it:

She gave it:

LIVE KOMBUCHA | CULTURE COLA HE SAID: Just to be clear, this is not a cola. If you try this expecting Pepsi, you will hate it. That being said, I really enjoyed this LIVE kombucha. The standard kombucha vinegary zing is the first flavor that hit my palate, then a smooth cola taste creeps in behind it and leaves a nice aftertaste. The only part I didn’t like was the slight herbal stevia flavor.

SHE SAID: Tea, natural flavors and stevia is all it takes to make this cola-like beverage. I wouldn’t say it’s going to cure you of your cola habit, but it would be a good place to start. It was fizzy with a flavor very close to cola and a light vinegar finish. An interesting take on kombucha.

He gave it:

She gave it:

BREW DR. KOMBUCHA | CLEAR MIND HE SAID: This Brew Dr. kombucha was exceptionally…average. It had the classic fermented green tea taste, with some very subtle hints of rosemary and mint. The exceptional part is that they achieve this flavor without adding juice like most other kombuchas on the market.

SHE SAID: The ingredient list almost sounds like a roast chicken recipe, but I sipped it down with an open mind. Thankfully, this did not taste like an herb garden but more like a crisp, refreshing citrus drink. Not sure if it’ll clear my head, but it’ll clear something else! Squeaky clean guts, oh yeah!
