50th Anniversary

Green River College is celebrating its 50th Anniversary throughout 2015-2016. While the effort to bring Green River Community College to Auburn has roots dating back to the 1940s, Green River’s main campus opened for students in the fall of 1965, thanks to a dedicated group of community leaders from throughout south King County. Auburn Superintendent Hayes Holman pulled together a team of administrators led by founding president Mel Lindbloom, Ray Needham, Bill Taylor, and Earl Norman and as they say: ”the rest is history.” Mel and Ray joined more than 200 individuals in the original Lindbloom Student Center on September 10th to kick off the year-long anniversary celebrations at the First 50 Breakfast.

50 Years Forward Campaign

Green River College has been a gateway of opportunity for 50 years, serving students in the Northwest and beyond. The Green River College Foundation has launched a campaign to raise $1.6 million to fund initiatives that will prepare students to enter a demanding job market and create access to a college education for all who seek it. Learn more about the 50 Years Forward Campaign and join us in removing barriers to college education and building pathways to great careers.

DISTINGUISHED FACULTY AWARD

What provides key insight to solving math problems, gets you buzzing about balance sheets and profit and loss statements, and helps you find the humor in the humerus as well as the tibia and fibula? It’s not a what, but a who, and that is the 2015 GRC Foundation Distinguished Faculty Award Recipients: Adrienne Palmer, Math; Pat Carter, Accounting; and Steve Brumbaugh, Biology. The first award was presented in 1985 to Marv Nelson and 70 faculty members have been recognized since. Adrienne, Pat, and Steve represent more than 400 full time and adjunct faculty providing excellent instruction and creating dynamic learning environments for Green River students.

10

FACULTY EXCELLENCE UPDATES Thanks to private contributions and matching funds available through 2007 from the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges, the GRC Foundation has built an endowment to fund Green River Faculty’s innovative ideas on how to improve teaching and learning. $30,000 in projects were approved in 2015 and results are being seen through a variety of projects such as new resources for math faculty to teach an array of classes, new relevant tests for physical therapy students, instructional videos for drafting students, and new classes that coordinate studies in multiple disciplines in the social sciences. Two of the more visible projects include a collection of framed photographs that tell the stories of 14 immigrant students and help them demonstrate progress in English Language Learning, and a new field book that identifies plants and shrubs native to the Green River campus and forested area.

Green River’s Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion has brought new traditions to Green River College, including quarterly leadership conferences that focus on key areas of service such as the First Peoples Conference in the fall, African American Leadership Conference in the winter, and the Diversity and Equity Conference in the spring, along with events around Islamic Awareness, Pacific Islanders Heritage, and LGBTQ awareness. ODEI is led by director Michael Tuncap and assistant director Marwa Almusawi, along with staff member Benjamin Lealofi and a high-energy group of student leaders.

The Individualized Graduation and Diploma (iGrad) program is just one example of Green River College’s partnership with the Kent School District. Operating since 2012, 208 students have earned a credential, including high school diplomas, GED, college certificates, and associates degrees. Other examples of the budding partnership include the development of a Mechatronics Program at Kent Phoenix Academy and a health careers pathway at Kentlake High School. IT Bachelors first cohort graduates. The first cohort of 24 students graduated with a Bachelors of Applied Science (BAS) in Network Administration and Security. 95 percent of these students are working in their field earning an average of more than $50,000 a year. Soon to follow, the first cohort from the ITBachelors in Software Development will graduate in June, 2016. Clinton Sizemore is among the first cohort and one of the first recipients of the GRC Foundation IT BAS scholarships. Clinton, ’15, went upstream from the Green River to the White and is now the IT lead for the White River School District in Buckley, Washington.

$5 MILLION IN GRANTS PROVIDE A WIDE RANGE OF SERVICES

COMPLETION PROJECT Green River College has been an active participant in a Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Initiative called Project Finish Line. Many colleges emphasize providing access to higher education and getting students on campus. Project Finish Line focuses on retaining students through to completion of their degree or certificate so they can transfer to their choice of 4 year college or enter the workforce with a completed credential. Green River has two completion coaches working directly with students to connect them with the campus and community resources they need to complete their studies. Project Finish Line is an important strategy that will allow Green River to be among the very best places to fully complete a degree or certificate.

14

A cornerstone of Green River’s success is the creativity and enthusiasm of its faculty and staff. They annually secure and manage over $5 million in grants and contracts to provide a wide range of services. Services include help for 200 disadvantaged students through a federal Student Support Services grant; Washington State Job Skills Program grants to train employees at nearly 20 local businesses; and college courses in Computer Reporting Technologies, Information Technology, and Maintenance Mechatronics, taught in area high schools with support from the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Education. Together, these services improve every Green River student’s college experience, while providing unique opportunities for exceptional students to distinguish themselves.
