ith the College approaching its 50th Anniversary in 2015-2016, it is a perfect time to reflect on the incredible contributions from past and current faculty, staff, community members and students. From the pioneering faculty and administrators who built our campus and curricula in the 1960’s, to the amazing instructors who offer leading-edge programs such as the new Bachelor of Applied Science degrees, the College continues to maintain currency with business and industry. Green River is committed to meeting the changing needs of our students, community and economy. This year, the College continued to implement its Strategic Plan, focusing on college transfer, career and technical education, college readiness, and continuing and community education. At Green River, understanding our students and helping them achieve their academic goals is a major priority. The June commencement is always a time of celebration for graduates, families, friends, faculty and staff, all focusing on the many achievements and successes of our students who earn their degrees and certificates. After ten years of planning and design, significant progress was made this past year on two campus building projects: Trades Complex and Student Life. As you approach the campus, it is easy to notice these structures taking shape and marvel at the opportunities they will bring to our current and future students. Donors continue to provide strong support to the Green River College Foundation, which focuses on student access, success and building capacity and flexibility for the College. Our donor community consists of alumni, staff and faculty, community members and local businesses and organizations. The scholarship program continues to grow, thanks to a healthy endowment and annual gifts. Your continued support has provided 270 scholarships valued at nearly $430,000. Programs such as the SAFE Fund (Student Assistance for Emergencies) and the VET Fund (Veterans Educational Transition) help students overcome financial obstacles that could potentially hinder their ultimate success. OUR Best of the best compete for All USA/All WA Academic Team Each year, two students are selected to represent Green River College on the All Washington Academic Team. All 34 Community and Technical Colleges send representatives each year. In 2013-14, Green River was represented by Kevin Hartoyo and Sara Li. Both Kevin and Sara’s outstanding GPA and community involvement proved why they were worthy of these honors. Additionally, Kevin, earning fourth in Washington state, was recognized at a ceremony in Olympia and awarded an additional scholarship. Both have bright futures ahead of them. Kevin’s goals include studying biomedical engineering at a four-year university, pursuing his PhD and one day finding a cure for cancer. Sara is focused on pursuing a PhD and eventually working in non-governmental organizations. Her goal is to work for the United Nations to advance human rights. We are proud to have both students represent the best of the best at Green River.
a success story in the making Veterans in Transition In its first full operational year the Veterans Educational Transition (VET) Fund helped 14 student veterans overcome financial hurdles to continue their education. Brad Payne, veteran of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) shared “I came to Green River College to enroll in a trades program. I’m passionate about what I want to do and I felt that this program would help prepare me for my future career. Everything was going great until I learned that the Department of Veterans Affairs delayed paying my housing allowance. I had to dig into my savings in order to keep afloat. Things became overwhelming very quickly. I needed help. I reached out to Veteran Services and learned about the VET Fund. Thanks to the VET Fund I was able to stay on track and not worry as much. Thanks for helping me and my family in our time of need.” Brad represents the rising number of veterans enrolled at Green River: 489 veterans in 2013-2014.

Aerospace High Demand 1,000 FTES
Early Achievers Opportunity Grant
Washington State’s legislature approved $17 million in 2013 for aerospace education: “We are committed to continuing investment in the aerospace training programs that matter most to the industry,” said Governor Jay Inslee. Green River received $296,000 for its Engineering and Manufacturing programs. Both added full-time instructors to meet growing student enrollment. An aerospace alumni coordinator will enhance Engineering courses by involving Green River alumni as mentors, speakers, and in many other ways. New advanced Manufacturing equipment will allow students to learn using machines which they will employ in their future jobs.
Over 100 state-registered “Early Achievers” child care centers in Green River’s service area employ providers who need to keep up their skills. Green River received $82,500 from the Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges to train and support these providers. Child care centers receive state funding based in part on their providers’ expertise. Demand for this training is so great that Green River’s program has tripled in size within two years! Eligible providers must be state residents employed at least 10 hours weekly at an “Early Achievers” child care center. Training includes free tuition, money for books, and support services.
College Spark Washington Grant 28% of new college students drop out in their first term. Green River received $77,749 from College Spark Washington to integrate the services of Green River’s Writing Center into “gateway” English courses. “These enhanced classes will provide meaningful support for developmental students, many of whom come from low-income backgrounds, in hopes of increasing their chances of earning their first credits in college-level English,” says Jamie Fitzgerald, the Writing Center’s Director. “Our goal is to equip these students with the tools to become better navigators of college campuses, and to help them transition more quickly towards degree completion. ”

alumni The Mary f. Christel Memorial Scholarship: bringing generations of learners together
“How did grandma use this funny machine?” asks Malia, aged 5. Lois Ladderud, retired court reporting instructor, explained that the machine is actually what a court reporter uses, typing in shorthand and later transcribing for court records. Malia’s grandmother Mary Christel was one of Lois’s students in the 1970’s and went on to become a well-known court reporter in the Puget Sound area. Malia was visiting campus with her parents Pete and Karen Baccetti and her sister Mia. The Baccettis wanted Malia to learn more about her grandmother and why they have been supporting the Mary F. Christel Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship has helped 10 students since they started it in 2006. Pete, also a Green River Alumnus, and Karen marveled at how campus has grown over the years, and paused to think what will it look like in 15-20 years when Malia and Mia would be of age to study here.

FACULTY Faculty Excellence: the One Book Project continues to engage readers
Jody Segal, faculty librarian, continued to direct the One Book Project thanks, in part, to funding from the Faculty Excellence Endowment of the Green River College Foundation. Julie Otsuka’s novel “When The Emperor Was Divine,” a telling story of the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II, was the 2013-14 book selection with activities culminating with a campus lecture by the author in April. The One Book Project invites all members of the campus community to read a select book and participate in discussions, classroom activities, and events such as Ms. Otsuka’s lecture. Prior to her lecture, a panel featuring Green River history faculty David Norberg, the family of artist Kenji Nomura, and Cho Shimizu shared their knowledge and first hand experiences of the impact of internment.
Distingished Faculty Awardees leverage selection to enhance learning Vik Bahl, English, and Frank Primiani, Social Sciences, represent a legion of Green River faculty who continually demonstrate high quality teaching and commitment to a positive learning environment for our growing diverse student body. The Foundation supports and recognizes their work through Faculty Excellence Grant Projects and by annually awarding Distinguished Faculty Awards. Faculty frequently earn outside recognition and opportunities to enhance their teaching as well. Past distinguished faculty awardees Bahl (2014) and Primiani (2003) were selected to attend the East-West Center summer institute on infusing Chinese and Japanese Religion, Art and Politics into Undergraduate Curriculum. As a result, Vik Bahl was able to develop a new course in Asian American Literature and Frank Primiani found common threads between Eastern and Western Philosophy, especially in regards to Critical Thinking Theory, which he has incorporated into his teaching since the 1990s. Bahl and Primiani’s experience exemplifies Green River’s commitment to Global Awareness.

BAS Degreees Marketing and Entrepreneurship Ashleigh Ligon will complete her Associates in Business at Green River in December 2014 and in January 2015 she will continue her education at Green River as a member of the inaugural cohort of the BAS in Marketing and Entrepreneurship program at Green River.
INFORMATION TEcHNOLOGY: Software Development, Network Administration and Security
The program is led by business faculty Jeff Perlot and Tim Broxholm and provides an open pathway for individuals earning, or who have earned, an Associate’s degree to attain a bachelor’s degree in marketing and entrepreneurship. Based at the Kent Campus, this program will partner with Green River’s Small Business Development Center and leverage partnerships between student projects and needs of local businesses. The opportunity to work on actual projects such as marketing analysis, brand awareness, and social media strategy is what puts the “applied” into this degree giving students and future employers the confidence of skills developed beyond the textbooks.

Responding to Washington’s shortage of highly skilled information technology employees, Green River launched BAS degrees in Software Development and Network Administration and Security. Students can build serious ‘tech cred’ by training for higher-wage, high-demand jobs. Our Bachelor’s in Software Development prepares graduates for careers in software development, mobile applications development, and web development, while our Bachelor’s in Network Administration and Security prepares graduates for careers in computer support, network and systems administration, and information security. Students enjoy small class sizes and access to stateof-the art equipment. They also receive one-on-one faculty advising and career preparation services. The program offers day, evening, and online courses offering the flexibility working professionals need at a community college price. Scholarship support is available for qualifying students through the Technology Scholars Program, funded by the National Science Foundation and the Green River College Foundation. Achieving the Dream Focuses on student success The College’s Achieving the Dream (ATD) program kicked off in December 2013 focusing on closing student achievement gaps. The Student Success, Data, and Communication teams continue to lead Green River’s ATD efforts. Comprised of individuals from across campus, these functionally diverse teams work together examining data and asking questions to determine clear goals concerning the access to, progression of, and success in academic achievement for all Green River students. Prioritizing access, progression and success, and closing the gaps among performance groups focused the development of four primary strategies for 2014-2015:
Involve a broad cross section of campus in continuing to examine our data and continue developing future strategies. Implement Participatory Governance bringing a broader range of campus voices. Develop a robust use of Reading Apprenticeship. Develop an Academic I-Best option for transitioning students.

Green River will mark its 50th Anniversary in the Fall 2015 with the opening of two major facilities now under construction: a new Student Life Center and a new Trades and Industry complex. In addition to modern amenities, both of the new facilities will be constructed for LEED Silver certification in sustainable design and energy efficiency.
Trades and Industry Complex The new Trades facility will showcase the college’s continued commitment to support careers in the trades by replacing 40+ year old buildings that are outdated and overcrowded. The new 71,500 square foot Trades complex will house the Auto Body, Automotive, Carpentry, Manufacturing, and Welding programs. The new facility will provide Green River with improved classroom organization and program flexibility. The complex will allow students to be trained on modern technology-based industrial equipment, create teaching spaces that augment vocational laboratories, and improve student access to Trades and Industry programs. As a result, Green River will be able to improve the trades programs, teach students more effectively, and meet local employers’ demand for qualified industrial trades’ graduates.
Student Life Center Students will have a new gathering point for building community and developing relationships in the new and improved Student Life Center. The building will become the heart of campus and will be supporting the activities that will create life-long bonds between students and the college. This new 61,000 square foot Student Life building will include the bookstore, cafeteria, meeting rooms, staff space for student government, intramurals, and recreation, as well as athletics and conference services. The space will also include a fitness center. Built in the foot print of the old humanities, social sciences, and business and industry complex, this facility will change the way Green River is able to serve students.
