2019/2020 IMPACT REPORT
THE POMEGRANATE The Jewish tradition states the following: the Torah has 613 mitzvot. Some are positive and some are negative, commandments to either perform or abstain from an act. The idea is that both action and restraint are equally essential to master and, once mastered, the expectation to be more moral, better educated and closer to G-d is closer to being achieved. The Jewish legend goes as follows: a pomegranate has 613 seeds. We say “May it be your will, G-d, that our merits increase as the seeds of a pomegranate” every new year on Rosh Hashanah. We pray that we acquire further knowledge, gain insightful wisdom, develop a humble righteousness, and be blessed with the fruitfulness of children and family in the year to come. A symbol of abundance, the pomegranate is hopeful, sweet and intriguing — so very much like our Greensboro community.

RECEPTION FOR DONORS Jewish Foundation of Greensboro and Masood Vojdani of MV Financial hosted a cocktail reception for 65 attendees at the home of Foundation Chair, Freddy Robinson.
JFS FOOD PANTRY Volunteers showed up to help sort and shelve food at the Jewish Family Services Food Pantry. The program, which runs several times each year, is open to all ages from young children to seniors. The Food Pantry’s heart and soul was our Volunteer Coordinator, David Frazier, z”l. David oversaw the growth of the pantry from a small operation of 15 families to its height of 135 families. He enthusiastically engaged volunteers of all ages who found his love of the work infectious. Because of him, the experience of volunteering in the pantry opened many peoples’ eyes to the reality of hunger in Greensboro and how just a little effort can make a big difference. We remember David Frazier for his joy and passion, his kindness and generosity, and for his complete commitment to mitzvot, to tikkun olam, and to this community. May his memory always be a blessing.

Several members of J•Triad came together for a Shabbaton in the mountains of North Carolina. A festive Shabbat dinner was followed by bonfires and s’mores while Saturday was spent hiking and exploring the town of Blowing Rock. The weekend concluded with a Sunday brunch.

WOMEN’S OPENING BRUNCH The Women’s Opening Brunch was a success with 122 women in attendance. The event, which was held at the O.Henry Hotel, featured author Sherry Z. Frank sharing stories from her book, A Passion to Serve: Memoirs of a Jewish Activist.
Recognizing that each Jew is responsible, one for another, we promote the welfare of the Jewish people in our community, in Israel and worldwide. That’s our mission — and we do it well year after year because of you.
BACK TO SCHOOL BASH & APPLEFEST
MISSION TO BERLIN
The Back to School bash was the perfect opportunity for children and their families to partake in crafts, games, and a sweet treat. Twenty-three families, including 47 children, were in attendance.
Thirty-five Jewish community members travelled to Berlin to explore historical sites, meet with German Jews, learn about the resurgence of Jewish life post World War II and how the Federation has played a role in shaping this community.
Families also celebrated a sweet new year at AppleFest! Children enjoyed bobbing for apples, apple and honey tasting, and Rosh Hashanah story time. Twenty-two families attended, including 37 children.

IGNITE WORKING SESSION The Ignite Jewish Business and Professionals Forum participants met to identify methods designed to help increase engagement, attract talent to Greensboro and make our Jewish community stronger.

SEPTEMBER JUSTICE MARK DAVIS The Cardozo Society hosted Justice Mark Davis, who shared insights about his experience as the first Jewish member of the North Carolina Supreme Court. Justice Davis also spoke in depth about his book, A Warren Court of Our Own: The Exum Court and the Expansion of Individual Rights in North Carolina.
ROSH HASHANAH JFS EVENTS Volunteers assembled and delivered gift bags to seniors in our community before the annual Rosh Hashanah Senior Luncheon, a joint event funded by JFS, the Temple, and Beth David with additional support from Carolina Foundation of Jewish Seniors and a sponsorship by Well•Spring. Held at the GreenHill Center for North Carolina Art, 70 attendees were moved by the exhibition “What Remains of the Day – Memories of World War II” as well as remarks by artist Gesche Würfel. This exhibition was on oral histories of people who survived the Holocaust and World War II.

P2G LEADERSHIP2GETHER RETREAT Sending a full delegation, Greensboro participated in the P2G Leadership2Gether Retreat, a program that encourages young people to connect across geographical, cultural and religious denominational boundaries while developing leadership skills. Counterparts learn about their Jewish heritage and identity, as well as their responsibilities as Jews to both their local community and to global Jewry.
As Jews, we have an eagerness to learn, to teach, to grow. From interest-free loans to free books, we make it a priority to develop and coach the next generation of leaders in Greensboro.
CELEBRATING 80 YEARS Federation honored the Jewish community on Homecoming Weekend with exciting 80th anniversary celebratory events. CAMPAIGN KICKOFF Featuring a Greensboro Jewish Federation Town Hall discussion: The Federation – Past, Present and Future, the 2020 Campaign Kickoff at the Greensboro Historical Museum was a chance to be among the many generous, remarkable people who make up the fabric of our vibrant community. Moderated by Ellen Gefen, panelists Koby Ellick, Mark Bochkis, Tom Cone, Marilyn Forman Chandler and Susan Robinson gave their perspective on being part of the Greensboro community. The Jewish Foundation of Greensboro re-launched the Create a Jewish Legacy initiative by hosting two days of educational programming featuring Kathryn Miree, JD. The initiative featured three engaging opportunities for affiliates: A training session focused on How to Become an Expert on the Conversations for Endowments, a breakfast program entitled Trends in Giving Smart, and a luncheon program titled Women’s Financial Empowerment: Seven Habits of Highly Effective Women.
P2G EDUCATOR’S DELEGATION A full delegation of educators from Greensboro helped bring Israel to the American classroom by participating in a Partnership2gether reciprocal program designed to strengthen their mutual understanding of the education systems in Israel and the U.S.

HAVDALAH FAMILY FUN NIGHT
PARTY WITH A PURPOSE The Women’s Philanthropy Collective hosted its annual Latke Vodka & Tzedakah event for women on a mission to make a difference. This year’s event raised more than $500 to directly support the Jewish Family Services van which provides rides for seniors to Shabbat services and medical appointments.

YOU ANSWERED THE CALL Sixty-seven members gathered together at Federation to participate in the Super Sunday Telethon, raising $44,490 to help make a difference in our community.

Eleven families enjoyed an evening of fun at Beth David Synagogue with Havdalah prayers followed by making pizza bagels. Rabbi BenGideon taught parents about the Blessing of the Children. Children made their own Havdalah sets, complete with Kiddush cup, spice sack, and braided candles. Parents were treated to a mixology lesson and make your own cocktails.
GREENSBORO CIVIL RIGHTS JOURNEY
LAUGHTER IS THE BEST MEDICINE Jewish Family Services hosted a Senior Sunday Brunch with more than 50 participants. The lox and bagel brunch featured an entertaining program by Leslie Sanders, a certified laughter leader. Leslie’s laughter workshops offer the opportunity for people to break through social barriers and have a good time together.

Eighty diverse participants, including the Mayor of Greensboro and other city council members, joined together for a Civil Rights mission across the South. With the goal of exploring the past and present while building community relationships, participants met with Reverends who worked with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and came to understand the role of different faith communities as well as Jewish involvement in the Civil Rights Movement.
A key ingredient in the Jewish recipe, Tzedek, Tzedek Tirdof, mandates that we pursue justice, promote righteousness, and live our lives with integrity, morality and honesty.

The 2020 Triad Jewish Film Festival was a success with a total attendance of 1,111 patrons. This year’s festival was made possible by both in-kind and monetary donations from 19 corporate sponsors, along with the generous support of the Friends of the Festival and Reel Deal pass holders. The partnership with Well•Spring helped the festival achieve its mission of bringing national and internationally acclaimed films to the greater Greensboro community. The theatre’s increased seating capacity and accessibility features enabled the festival to expand the number of tickets sold, and ensured everyone was comfortable and able to enjoy the films.

New measures were put in place in response to the uncertainty of COVID-19. The entire organization — Federation, Foundation and Jewish Family Services pivoted in a moment to take care of our community. The team acted immediately to keep the staff safe, and put procedures in place to provide care for the most vulnerable in our community.
The COVID-19 Emergency Response Fund was created to help ease the financial burden of the Jewish community in Guilford County as a result of the pandemic by providing housing assistance, food and mental health services.
STAYING CONNECTED In an effort to combat social isolation, Virtual Visions was launched to keep our community informed of interactive virtual events organized by the Federation and Greensboro Jewish affiliates.

WE ARE HERE FOR YOU A message from the Greensboro Jewish Federation was shared to help raise awareness of the COVID-19 Emergency Response Fund and ensure the community is prepared for life after the crisis.
ANSHEI GREENSBORO Anshei Greensboro launched during a time of isolation and uncertainty as a way to connect the community with one another. Featured on social media outlets, an inspiring, thoughtful, philanthropic, and passionate Federation allstar was interviewed and highlighted as a send off before Shabbat.
A HELPING HAND The Jewish Foundation of Greensboro distributed nearly $140,000 to COVID-19 Emergency Relief efforts from Donor Advised Funds, with more than $66,000 to the Federation and nearly $74,000 to other COVID-19 relief efforts.
LAG BA’OMER FAMILY FIELD DAY
Partnership2Gether and GJF hosted an interactive Passover Seder and concert, featuring the musical duo Yonina (Yoni and Nina), from the Hadera-Eiron region of Israel.
PJ Library Greensboro hosted a family event that was active and interactive. Zoom relay races and obstacles were followed by tasty campfire s’mores.

EMOTIONAL BALANCE Betsy Gamburg hosted an interactive Lunch & Learn workshop over Zoom to talk about “Keeping Our Emotional Balance” in these challenging days.
CONVERSATION WITH DEBORAH FELDMAN REACHING OUT More than 100 gift bags, including boxes of matzoh, were delivered to older adults in the community and in senior living facilities. A Passover guide with questions to reflect upon as well as videos to enjoy were also distributed.

Deborah Feldman, author of the New York Times Bestseller Unorthodox: The Scandalous Rejection of My Hasidic Roots, discussed her harrowing and, ultimately, inspiring journey to more than 200 members of the Greensboro Jewish community. Feldman’s memoir of living in, and escaping from, an oppressively strict community was the inspiration for the hit Netflix miniseries Unorthodox.
The year started off as any other, but we quickly found ourselves entrenched in a global dilemma that would change the course of history. You led the way, ensuring our community didn’t miss a beat as we transitioned to a virtual experience.

ANNUAL MEETING 2020 History was made when, due to COVID-19 concerns, the first virtual Annual Membership Meeting was held via Zoom. Nearly 100 community members attended online to hear from presenters that included outgoing President Sue Simmons, Executive Director Marilyn Forman Chandler and newly installed President Tom Cone. Sincere appreciation was given to the Board of Trustees, Executive Committee, JFG and JFS boards, campaign and program committees, and professional staff members who strive to sustain a flourishing Jewish community even in the hardest of times.
FOR OUR FRONTLINE HEROES JFS launched “Team Thank You!”, an at-home family Mitzvah project. Community members created words of gratitude and drawings that were delivered to local first responders in a contactless way.
