I thought to myself, Thanks Miley Cyrus for the motivational lyrics. Although Gabby did not fully understand the message, I did, and I know those words will resonate within her. These experiences remind me that I am not only their parent but student as well. Life is full of hills and valleys- and you hope that you’ll have a few more hills. Sometimes we become so stuck in a valley that we forget to enjoy life even at our lowest points. Climbing the hill reminds us of the hard work, struggle, and dedication it took to get to the peak. Enjoy the view, no matter that your hilltop isn’t the highest. GL

ENTERTAINMENT GAVIN WILLIAMS Written By Angel Babie Penn Gavin “Maestro” Williams… it was apparent that even while in his mother’s womb, music would be his destiny. After all, his mother has taught music for twenty-seven years, his father sings and is the Bishop of Newbirth ICM in Lynchburg, VA. He also has one sibling Cassie Williams who is a Publicist. When asked at what time did he seriously began to venture into music, he stated that it was inevitable because of his background. He founded and started the group “Infamous Ill Squad” while still in Philadelphia, PA. After his move to NC, with the help of his cousin Brandon, he was then able to get his “squad” to N.C, and as he put it “Thus started his little empire, lol.” The “Maestro” is also very well known for the “beats” and music that he writes and creates, which parallels his alter ego “GavBeats”. A meeting with Vincent Herbert opened new doors for Gavin and lead to his first big placement in the music industry. Since then, he has produced artists such as Benzino, Jasmine Trias, Keisha Cole, Lil Rome, Immature and several local artist. Gavin is known for saying he “is not” a singer, however when he wrote, produced, and sung on all the tracks on his CD entitled “Hopeless Romantic”, everyone was not only pleasantly surprised but became immediate fans as well. He states that the CD was inspired by love and the will to do so, which has led to him acquiring yet another name, “Mr. Hopeless Romantic.” When asked what drives him, he states, “The will to win” and “Fighting on behalf of the underdog”.

“My dad was the lead singer in a gospel band,” says Dirrty Records Founder/ Filmmaker Lunden De’Leon. “The first time I saw him on stage I knew I wanted to be a part of the music industry.” Born in Barbados, while in high school, Lunden found a fry flipping job at Burger King and when the time was right, she hitched a ride to Hollywood with only $200 in her pocket. “I was homeless for a short period of time in Los Angeles,” says Lunden. “I did not know what the future held, but I was determined to turn my stumbling blocks into stepping stones.” Lunden soon found a roommate that changed her life forever. “I tagged along to a modeling audition with my roommate. I wasn’t interested in modeling or acting, but when you’re hungry and penniless, you’ll try anything to put food on the table. I got the audition. That same day I was signed to a one year modeling contract.” Fans recall first being introduced to Lunden as Joanne Mbutu on the hit television series Vital Signs. Years later, she catapulted that breakout role into a successful career, with quite an impressive track-record, by creating a number of unforgettable performances and starring in over fifty movies and television shows. Some of her television and show performances are from 20th Century Fox Movie The Ladies Room, Surviving
Paradise, Fury Faux- Pas, Cryptz, the HBO awardwinning film Kickin Chicken and the NBC hit comedy “Just Shoot Me.” Lunden was soon voted by The Ave Magazine as “One of the Most Significant Women in Entertainment” alongside Halle Berry, Beyonce, Oprah Winfrey and many more. In Fall 2003, Lunden opened the doors to her Los Angeles based record label Dirrty Records making headlines around the world for releasing a punk remake of Jimi Hendrix’s classic Purple Haze. Lunden was soon inducted into the Caribbean Hall of Fame alongside such legends as Bob Marley and Sidney Poitier. Known for her compassion, confidence and inspirational achievements, former Los Angeles Mayor James K. Hahn issued a special proclamation declaring February 7th as “Lunden De’Leon Day” in the City of Los Angeles. Lunden recently ran for Councilwoman in her home state of South Carolina. Her film production company, Palmetto Film Studios, creates and distributes 5-7 films a year.

’m constantly reaching out to those who have overcome adversity to tell their story. I’ve found that many are afraid to open up and be sincerely transparent. Ms. Peachanda DuBose showed no fear and was more than willing to share her story. A story that I believe will inspire and uplift others, and maybe even save a life.

Poet, Director, Producer, and a Mother are some of the many titles that she has to her credit, yet “Survivor” has to be one of the most important of all. Ms. Peachanda DuBose was born in Wilmington, DE and raised in the Hampton Roads Virginia area. She has also lived in Texas, Florida, and California. She has seven siblings which includes two sisters and five brothers.

After escaping from the domestic violence, Peachanda found herself turning to the streets, drug distribution, illegal drinking and even a brief stint with prostitution. Peachanda’s life began with many challenges; an absent father and an unstable mother with a chemical dependency. Due to those circumstances Peachanda found herself in and out of the foster care system. It was very intimidating for a young girl living amongst strangers. During one of her stints in the system, Peachanda was molested by a fellow teen that also lived in the same foster home. It seems a system that was established to protect children added to an already painful situation. Thankfully her grandmother soon came to rescue her and her sibling.
In later years Peachanda met who she thought was her knight in shining armor. Six months later the domestic violence began. Due to her immaturity and her need to feel loved and thinking she was in love, she married him anyway. She endured four more years of continuous domestic abuse. Eventually Peachanda found the strength to leave but all still was not well. After escaping from the domestic violence of her marriage, Peachanda found herself turning to the streets. She began experimenting with

drug distribution, illegal drinking establishments and even a brief stint with prostitution. With everything that she has experience throughout her life Peachanda has never given up. She learned to forgive herself and drag herself up out of the gutter. She washed off the dirt and grime that had been smeared upon her life. She credits several people for helping her though her crisis. Her mother soon overcame her addition and introduced Peachanda to Christ. Her grandmother was always there for her with open arms in times of trouble, fighting to hold the family together. Olethia Everrett her big sister from the Big Brother/ Big Sister program mentored her as a teen and introduced her to poetry. With Christ and the love of family and friends, she slowing but surely evolved. Peachanda relied on her faith to pull her through the dark places in her life. She
now uses her experiences as a testament that no matter where you have been in life and no matter what you have done, you can still persevere. As a mother she thrives to be a positive influence and lead by example. She is transparent about her past so they her children will not fall victim to the same traps she did. Peachanda uses her gift as a writer to inspire, uplift, and encourage her audiences around the country via her stage plays and her books. Her credits include her books “Reflections of Me”, “Unbreakable” (A Woman Still Standing) and her stage plays “Surrender”, “Even a Wretch like Me”, and “Mr. Harold Behave”. She is

currently touring with her play “The Devil Thought He Had Me” with chronicles her real life story. Her new production “Diverse Temptations” will debut in March 2014. I sincerely thank Peachanda for being open and honest enough to share her story with Greensboro Live and our readers. There is no doubt that someone will read this story and find faith, inspiration, courage, and the ability to forgive themselves in order to overcome and reach their own destiny We are sure to hear and see more greatness to come from Ms. Dubose. BellamySmalls spends a lot of time in her community, in the city, at functions, talking with people and assisting people. Whether they live in District 1 or not and they have a concern Bellamy-Smalls will pull out her cell phone and say, “Here, let’s get it solved now.” She wants to continue. Can Jim Kee upgrade East Greensboro?
Jim Kee plans to be the key difference on city council in District 2. He’s been a resident of District 2 since 1989, and a graduate of NCA&T in economics. He feels that development, public safety and environmental safety are the three most important issues District 2 face. Over the past 12 years Jim Kee’s has worked with members of Citizens Across the State, the City of Greensboro, the City Council, and the County Commissioners. He worked to get the White Street Landfill closed and the new McGirt-Horton Library open. His next big project is the Bessemer Plaza which intends to bring upward of 70 jobs to East Greensboro. Mr. Kee has plans to create affordable and upscale housing in District 2.

s an Intimate relationships coach, I am always engaging in conversations with people about the challenges of falling, finding and marinating love in their lives. When it comes to love many of us don’t have a clue where to start. The possibilities are endless, as we all know. Often, we feel powerless over the difficulties we find ourselves in, causing us to hide our real emotions and ask ourselves, “Will I ever have love in my life?” When it comes to love, it’s generally us ourselves that prevent love from finding us. We tend to self-sabotage and cause love to run and hide from our presence. The first steps to finding love, is to identify things that block us from making the real connections to others. These blocks, some large and small, play a toxic role in our lives and prevent physical, mental, emotional and spiritual bonds from happening in our relationships. When it comes to love do you settle or are you just making a bad choice? In this life, every choice matters, and deep in our gut, we know it— this explains why we are sometimes paralyzed over making choices ranging from what to order on a menu to who we should be with in a relationship. When it comes to the choices we make in our relationships, however, so many people choose “settling” for something or someone who is not really what they want. Many say, “Well at least I’m not alone.” Yeah you not alone but your unhappy, you tell me what is worst.
2.Sending mixed messages
First, understand that you are always in communication with the universe. If you tell the universe that you deserve a loving committed relationship, and then ten minutes later see a couple walking hand in hand and think, ‘that could never happen to me’, you’re going to slow down the speed of attraction! *Remember that you are what you think you are.
3.Lack of trust in yourself
Losing control and trusting yourself are difficult things to do. Trust and acceptance - which go hand in hand, are the most powerful tools you have, it is the most potent energy available to you. When you have confidence - or, trust, within you, it produces a positive energy that quiets doubt, worry, fear and negative The Voice of your Community
expectations. It has a profound effect on you and others.
4.Overindulgence
The way I refer to overindulging is moving “too fast” in a relationship, this is typically subjective, however some people who are accustomed to the dating scene often claim to know exactly what they’re looking for. Divorced people also claim that their status makes it easier to weed through potential dates. In short, every person has a timetable that he or she is comfortable with. But regardless of whether your new romance develops in three days or three months, there are usually some signs that things are moving too quickly for either party. These signs can be subtle or downright in your face and include: •Completely forgotten your friends •Having that nervous “Roller Coaster” feeling...a lot •You suddenly realize that you know very little about him/her •Your new love begins “Restricting Access” 5.Giving your power away to others One of the themes that repeatedly came up in my conversations is having the problem of giving our power away. Instead of focusing on our true desires, we create distractions and then feed our power to those structures causing us to feel powerless to our destiny. Let’s say that your true desire is to be in love. You want a relationship with someone special. You want to be with someone
who totally loves you just the way you are. But instead of focusing your power on creating that, here’s what you do instead. You decide that before you can attract a new relationship, you need to get into better physical condition first. You have to “fix” your diet and hit the gym for a while. Or maybe you decide that in order to be more attractive, you need to get your career on track first. Maybe upgrade your finances a bit. Or maybe you hold yourself stuck in a relationship that isn’t what you want, one that will never become what you truly, deeply desire. These issues serve as a convenient block to keep your true desires out of reach.
6.Surrounding yourself with the unhappy and unlucky
According to the amazing book by Robert Green “The 48 Laws of Power” he states the following as law number 10. Infection: Avoid the Unhappy and Unlucky You can die from someone else’s misery – emotional states are as infectious as disease. You may feel you are helping the drowning man but you are only precipitating your own disaster. The unfortunate sometimes draw misfortune on themselves; they will also draw it on you. Associate with the happy and fortunate instead.
7.Being uncomfortable to receive love
The biggest reason we are uncomfortable with love is FEAR. Stop fearing loss.

As an accomplished personal fitness trainer for several years, I have seen many people motivated to improve themselves. Many start but fail to achieve their goal because of lack of knowledge of targeted exercise techniques, proper nutrition, and a healthy lifestyle. Even though my job is to sKulpt bodies, the most successful clients are the ones that are dedicated to a healthy lifestyle routine for themselves and not to please others. uestion: What are motivational factors to a healthy lifestyle?
nswer: There are several motivational factors when one transforms from unhealthy to a healthy lifestyle. Working out and eating properly are fundamental for a healthy lifestyle. This will result in better sleeping habits, less stress and better physical definition. Another outcome of a healthy lifestyle is a better defined physical appearance. Many people derail their efforts to achieve a healthy lifestyle when they don’t balance cardio, weight training, other forms of exercise, and proper nutrition. When there is too much emphasis on one part of the formula, then people often become frustrated when they don’t see the results they are trying to achieve. However, in order to accomplish a healthy result, each individual must first have and develop a DAILY PERSONAL commitment and willingness to push through initial discomfort in order to accomplish their goals. Self-dedication and commitment to “a better you” is key to achieving a healthy lifestyle. At a crossroad in life, everyone has and will need to make a choice as to how they want to live. Whether positive or negative, each choice will produce consequences or rewards.
Urban Sophistication
Those who take pleasure in working out and a healthy nutritious intake certainly don’t have much difficulty making healthy habits a conditional part of their lifestyles. For instance, I’ve certainly enjoyed playing sports such as soccer, racquet ball, volley ball and working out for over 17 years. Understanding the significance of a healthy intake makes me value living a healthy lifestyle and continuously craving more healthy whole foods. Everyone should be involved in some type of physical activity that is desirable to them, and incorporate a nutritious healthy lifestyle that they find scrumptious. The general intent is to discover interests which will then become a lifestyle. Starting on the road to a healthy lifestyle begins with making small choices and continues with dedication to yourself. Yvonne Johnson was the mayor of Greensboro, North Carolina from 2007 until 2009. She was previously a member of the Greensboro City Council for 14 years, beginning in 1993 and Mayor Pro-Tem for 6 years. Johnson was the first African-American to serve as Greensboro’s mayor. Johnson lost her reelection bid in 2009 to Republican political newcomer Bill Knight. As of 2011, she is running for an at-large city council seat, having garnered the most votes of any candidate in the October, 2011 city primary. When Greensboro’s Minority Small Business Person of the Year opens his latest crematory in Raleigh this summer, it will be his final venture for awhile ... if his wife and fellow award winner has anything to say about it. “That one will probably be the final one,” says Donnica Boston, vice president of Triad Cremation Society. “I ain’t gonna say that,” counters Clarence Boston, the company’s CEO. “For right now, yes!” Donnica says. Business is booming for the Bostons, who opened Triad Cremation Society on Arnold Street in east Greensboro in 2008 before expanding to a larger facility. They were among nine winners honored Thursday by the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce at a lunchtime ceremony in the Special Events Center adjacent to the Greensboro Coliseum. “We’re the highest-volume crematory in the whole state of North Carolina,” Clarence says. The Bostons, who have three young children in addition to a burgeoning business empire, quickly outgrew Triad Cremation Society’s original location and moved to 2110 Veasley St., near Four Seasons Town Centre. They renovated the building and expanded their services to include a chapel. “We’re able to offer families more services at this location than we did at the other location,” Donnica says.

5 Paths to Receiving Love 1. Trust people when they tell you that they love you. Whether it be an intimate relationship, a friendship, or a family relationship, it is important to accept the declaration of love at face value. 2. Let love in and don’t block it. Simply open your heart, live in the moment and cherish the fact that other people care so deeply about you that you are connected needed, wanted, and included in the affairs and lives of others. 3. Beware the voices of societal negativity. Social conditioning has a habit of making us feel wary of being effusive about and openly accepting of compliments, generosity, caring, and kind acts, lest we be seen as greedy, prideful, or selfish. 4. Show love. Receiving love is also about having love within you. Kiss your spouse and children, hug your friends, compliment your colleagues, and say friendly and complimentary things to the grocery store clerks. Do this regularly. 5. Watch the experts at receiving love. Children are expert at receiving love because they accept what is said at face value and view receiving love as natural. “That’s where that Harlem Bistro Cajun food comes from,” she says. Donnica, 34, is also an attorney, but gave up law practice to focus on the family businesses. Clarence, 35, studied at Gupton and Jones College of Mortuary Science in Atlanta. At age 13 he landed a part-time job at Johnson and Sons Funeral Home in his native Reidsville, mowing grass and washing cars. He had been fascinated by the business since he was 8 years old.
They also own and operate Prominence Funeral Home in Thomasville and the Cremation Society of Charlotte. Closer to home, they operate Boston Investment Group and publish a quarterly magazine called Greensboro Live that focuses on “urban sophistication.” In February, they opened Harlem Bistro at 223 S. Elm St. in downtown Greensboro.
“When my grandfather passed, it really intrigued me how they conducted the service,” Clarence says.
Clarence grew up in Reidsville, while Donnica hails from Baton Rouge.
