I am in LOVE with the original elegance humbly waiting inside this house! First, seven fireplaces (Yes, SEVEN!) every one a beauty in its own right. Not to mention the fabulous, walnut staircase standing with all of its integrity intact. Take me to North Carolina! I NEED this staircase in my life so I can walk down in my antebellum gown at least once! (Okay, maybe more than once.)

The large, level yard offers numerous possibilities for gardening, a playhouse and backyard sports, or workshop space. Although the house will require a complete rehabilitation, it exudes style and the craftsmanship is apparent in its inlaid wood floors, carved walnut stairs, stained glass windows and more!
Heavily ornamented outside and inside, the large two-story Hadley-Mayes House has a gable-andwing form. It reflects the Italianate-style with its narrow, paired windows, double-doors and decorative brackets while also exhibiting textbook Queen Anne features including irregular massing, two-story bay window, wraparound porch with turned posts, stained glass windows and wonderful German siding. From its wide entrance hall with massive stairs and colonnade to its seven fireplaces, it bespeaks elegance. Born and raised in Iowa, Melanie's mother and father both grew up on family farms where the old houses (mostly American Foursquares) were more often than not built by family and handed down to later generations. She remembers trips into town looking out the window of the back seat of the car admiring the Grand Victorian houses on the hills overlooking the river.
Melanie has a degree in Art Education from South Dakota State University. She has taught visual art and art history for 18 years. Besides teaching, she stays busy with her three kids, Kyle, Karlee and Caden along with the family dogs, Gus and Buddy. She can still be seen going through historical districts, but now she's in the driver's seat! She is super excited to contribute to CIRCA and hopes to help save some old houses!
