IRESPECT Series
Pa r t 1 o f 8
With 8 weeks left to go in the 2015-2016 academic year, there is much to reflect on from this past year and still so much to look forward to.
From the beginning of our school, our iRESPECT
values have guided so much of what we do.
Given there are 8 of these values, we begin this
new newsletter series to celebrate one each for the remainder of the semester.
This week: COMMUNITY
I begin this week with a story about our dear Pak Yok. Pak Yok has been at Green School since the second year as our Bamboo Carver. What other school has a Bamboo Carver!?
In that time
he has carved well over 3000 names on our Heart of School of people from all over the world.
Those names and the relationships that we have in our Sibang village home represent one incredible aspect of our school: our community.
There are people from around the world that
have left their names and their hard work, joy and memories at Green School.
Some of those
individuals live here, some have worked here, and some have travelled here; but all were inspired by Green School.
Community
engagement
is
something
that
many
schools
struggle
with,
but
it
is
our
great
strength and captured first and foremost in our Mission Statement: A Community of Learners Making Our World Sustainable.
Our community goes from local to global and we benefit and
thrive from that support daily.
At a staff meeting last month, a member of our operations staff observed: Pak Yok has carved so many names and is such an important part of our community, but his own name is not carved on the Heart of School.
Without Pak Yok knowing, the faculty put together a donation to the Local
Scholars Programme to buy a bamboo pole in his honour.
This past week, Pak Yok received a
notification for another carving and, much to his surprise, this time it was his name that he was asked to inscribe on our beloved Heart of School.
This is what community means to me; it is
about the little things we do for each other that are so meaningful.
Thank you Pak Yok and everyone in our community for making this place very special indeed.
Yours in community, Ibu Leslie

Writer's Workshop in Full Swing!
This week in 5B we delved into how writers create depth and
dimension
with
the
characters
in
their
stories.
Students played with adding dialogue to build personality and attitude to characters as well as creating interesting dynamics with other characters. The final draft of student stories will be featured in a class anthology as part of the grade five capstone project, Footprints.

On Friday, May 13th, Green School will host a series of Cricket Matches (starting at 9.30am) with four visiting teams on island.
Green School won this competition last year, and we now defend
our title on home turf. It is going to be a great showdown!
High School grade 9 student, Billy Barge, has been working tirelessly to coordinate this event as well as train and coach our cricket team for the big day as part of his "Your Big Idea" Enterprise Independent Learning Block.

In art lessons over the next couple of weeks, grades 1-5 are learning different forms of finger knitting. We are using wool and fabric string made from recycled t-shirts. The knitting is going to be used in a large collaborative artwork which we'll display in the HOS. Watch this space!
