ECO-FRIENDLY BREWS
Hopworks Urban Brewery (HUB) has partnered with clean-energy supplier 3 Phases Renewables to supply its southeast Portland brewery and restaurant with 100 percent renewable energy.
“At Hopworks, we’re deeply committed to environmental sustainability and conservation,” says brewmaster and founder Christian Ettinger in a statement. “Our partnership with 3 Phases Renewables helped us to not only go green, we’ve also saved money on our gas bill. It’s been what we like to call a ‘win-win’ for our business and for the local environment.”
Using locally sourced, organic and Salmon-Safe hops, HUB’s 20-barrel brewery produces 13,500 barrels of beer a year for its two brewpubs, taproom and distribution throughout the Northwest. Familyowned and -operated, it is the first Certified B Corporation brewery in the Pacific Northwest and the first Salmon-Safe Certified brewery site in the world. In its southeast Portland Brewery location, HUB has a banquet room available for private rental during the workweek, which can accommodate up to 55 people. Groundbreaking News
Washington State Convention Center (WSCC) has broken ground on its muchanticipated 250,000 square feet of new exhibition space. The existing facility will be called Arch—in reference to the sky bridge and canopy arch that bridges the facility along Pike Street between Seventh Avenue and Eighth Avenue. The additional facility will be called Summit.
In the past five years, Seattle has had to turn down more than 350 event proposals because dates were unavailable due to lack of space or timing constraints at the existing Arch building, costing the region more than $2.13 billion in potential economic benefit. When finished in spring 2022, the Summit building is expected to drive more than 400,000 new conventioneers to the city and generate more than $19 million in tax revenue each year.
The $1.7 billion project is slated to open in 2022 and will be funded from WSCC’s 2018 bond issuance. The Summit building is anticipated to be Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) gold-certified. wscc.com

Spaceheads
Following its $100 million renovation featuring the world’s first and only revolving glass floor, Seattle’s Space Needle received the “2018 Technical Innovation Award for Excellence” from the World Federation of Great Towers (WFGT), an international association which includes some of the world’s most recognizable structures, such as the Eiffel Tower and Empire State Building.
Walls, barriers and floors were removed from the Space Needle and replaced with structural glass, revealing dramatically expanded views and a new, multilevel guest experience. The openair glass panels dip out slightly with no seams between them, leaving nothing but air between visitors and the dramatic Puget Sound view. spaceneedle.com
