Apr/May 2015 Newsletter Southern Author Festival • p. 4 Summer Reading Kickoff • p. 9 Smart Money Saturday • p. 15

Dear Reader, During April, we celebrate National Library Week and I think this year’s theme, Unlimited Possibilities @ Your Library, is an accurate reflection of what public libraries are all about. The resources and services of your public library offer unlimited possibilities for discovery, learning, enjoyment and inspiration that can help everyone pursue their dreams and ambitions. We are continually enhancing the possibilities available to you by providing more convenient access to materials and programs for all ages. One example is the addition of more downloadable materials that can be borrowed and enjoyed remotely. On a much larger scale, a new branch library is going to be built on Woodruff Road in the Five Forks area. As part of the Week of the Young Child, Hughes Main Library joins Greenville County First Steps and other Heritage Green institutions to celebrate children on Saturday, April 11. April brings National Poetry Month, too, and I encourage you to read, write and/or listen to at least one poem this month. You’ll be glad you did. Plan now to attend the Friends of the Greenville County Library System Book Sale the weekend of April 24-26. New Friends membership applications and renewals will be taken at the sale or can be completed online anytime by visiting the Friends page of the library’s website, greenvillelibrary.org. In May, the Friends will present a Southern Authors Festival showcasing several regional authors. From Faulkner, discussed by Dr. Hal Poe, to local favorite George Singleton, to best-selling writer Karen White and award-winning novelist, James McTeer, you’re sure to be enlightened and entertained. Have a nice spring!

SOUTHERN AUTHORS

10:30a | George Singleton is the author of six collections of short stories, two novels and a book of advice for writers. Mr. Singleton has been described by the Atlanta-Constitution as “the unchallenged king of the comic, Southern short story.” His keen observations of the quirks of human nature have inspired some of the most unforgettable characters in current Southern humor. His next book, Calloustown, is slated for publication later this year.

Sat, May 23 • 9:30a-4p | Main, Meeting Rooms A-C Join us for this daylong event celebrating Southern fiction and poetry.

1:00p | James E. McTeer won the 2014 South Carolina First Novel Competition for his inaugural work, Minnow, which debuts at this year’s South Carolina Book Festival. Born and raised in Beaufort, his widely-acclaimed novel is inspired by his grandfather who served 37 years as High Sheriff of the LowCountry.

2:30p | Karen White is a New York Times bestselling author of 19 novels. She has twice won the National Readers’ Choice Award. She describes her writing as “grit lit—Southern women’s fiction” and has recently introduced a bestselling mystery series set in Charleston, SC. Her newest work, The Sound of Glass publishes in May.

Books by the authors will be available for signing and purchase at each presentation.

MAKING IT !

Generous grant funding from the organizations below is making possible special discovery kits that stimulate children's learning of basic concepts of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). These kits are used in our In BeTween Craft and Science Station programs as well as for outreach visits to county community centers.

This project is made possible by a Library Services and Technology Act grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services administered by the South Carolina State Library.

Do Black Holes really exist? Why don’t satellites fall to the earth? Kids have questions, and the library has a great new way for them to find answers. ScienceFlix™ is the library’s newest resource to help children get excited and have fun learning about the way world works. With topics ranging over 30 focus areas of science, each unit of this database offers interactive media, videos, suggestions for science projects and more. ScienceFlix™ is available to all library card holders anywhere there is internet connectivity—just use your card number and your Library PIN.
