This fall marks a milestone in the presidency of Dr. Patricia Picard Cormier, who has now been at the helm of Longwood University for 10 years.

MakingConnections, BuildingRelationships
Most management consultants would agree that relationships form the foundation for effective leadership. As Dr. Cormier says, building such relationships has been a hallmark ofher presidency. "My job as a college president wouldhave been impossible ifit had not been for the people who have supported me - the faculty, staff, students; our remarkable Board ofVisitors; my family, especially the First Gent, Raymond Cormier; our alumni and the many friends of Longwood. Leadership begins with relationships. Ifit were not for those vital connections, we would not be where we are roday."
The inrroducrory paragraph ofthe vision forLongwood University, approved by the Board ofVisitors on l December 200I, states emphatically that:
Longwood will be recognized as the top comprehensive public institution in theSouth through itsfocus on attracting and retaining a diversefaculty recognizedfor excellence in teaching, attracting outstanding students, providing challenging instruction ofthe highestquality andproviding an academic and residential life environment that develops citizen leadership skills. To achieve this vision, all members oftheLongwood community will be dedicated to the highest standards of academic distinction andquality oflife, and will examine, reaffirm, and refine those aspects ofthe college experience that collectively makeLongwood an exceptional learning community.
" Leadership begins with relationships." -Dr.PatriciaP.Cormier
Dr.Cormier began building those relationships even before her inauguration as she assembled an executive staffand held retreats to refine the mission ofLongwood to create a truly meaningful learning environment. That mission, as many of youknow, has been a guiding principle for the university: "Longwood University is an insrirnrion ofhigher learning dedicated to the development ofcitizen leaders who are prepared to make positive contributions to the common good ofsociety ..."The pursuit ofthat mission, however, requires both a vision and a strategic plan.
TheVisionThing
In 1987, George HerbertWalker Bush, the 41st President ofthe United States, responding to a suggestion that he rnrn his attention from short-term campaign objectives and look to the longer term, uttered those immortal words, "Oh, the vision thing."That's not to diminish the importance of vision - without vision there can be no leadership. The Rev.Theodore Hesburgh, president emeritus ofthe University ofNotre Dame, once stated, "The very essence ofleadership is that you have to have a vision. Ir's got to be a vision you articulate clearly and forcefully on every occasion."
With the official mission and vision approved and endorsed by the Longwood Board ofVisitors, a strategic plan was soon createdto guideLongwood in the years to come. As part ofthe narnral evolution ofa livingdocument, the strategic plan wasreviewed in 2001, resultingin a revised and approvedstrategic plan: "From Vision toAction: The Five-Year Plan." This document, which supports the original mission and vision, recognizes that "Longwood is a learning-centered community" with afocus on preparing citizen leaders for the common good. It can be read online at www.longwood.edu/president.
The new mission, vision and strategic plan became a map for the future, as Longwood University would be transformed over the next 10 years under the leadership ofPresident Cormier.
TheStartofanEra
When theLongwood Board ofVisitors announced the selection ofDr. Cormier as the next president ofLongwood College, then-Vice Rector Alice Stallard foretold the wake of a visionary leader, recommending Dr. Cormier to the Longwoodcommunityas "an energeticproducer ofresults." Inauguration Dr. Patricia P. Cormier was inaugurated asLongwoodCollege'stwenty-fourthpresident on11April1997.

EducatingtheLeaders ofTomorrow
The mission ofLongwood University, as defined by the Longwood community, is "to educate citizen leaders for the common good ofsociety." More than aslogan or a marketing tool, "citizen leadership for the common good" is an institutional value:
The Citizen Leader is a lifelong learner possessed ofa natural intelligence that has been developed and refined through rigorous participation in a learning-centered educational experience.
The Citizen Leader is dedicated to the concept ofsocietal responsibility, continually acknowledging through word and deed that each human being has a fundamental responsibility to contribute to the well-being ofhis or her fellows. 1
The Citizen Leader has the ability to apply knowledge and learning in a practical and beneficial manner to the different situations and circumstances he or she will confront in life.
The Citizen Leaderhas respect for democratic principles, most importantly equality, civility, tolerance, honesty and duty.
The Citizen Leader is a catalyst for meaningful change.
