LASTFALL,the2007-08academicyeargotoffcoagreatstart onAugust28,asLongwoodUniversityopenedanewHealch andFitnessCenter(HFC).Withagrandopeningthemeof "CreatingaFieU,"thenew$13.6millionbuildingpromises toshapeanewgenerationofLongwoodalumni.

FrontingonMainStreetnexttothehigh-riseresidencehalls, theHFCisdestinedtobecomethemostpopularplaceon campus,secondonlytotheDorrillDiningHall.Alongwith campusrecreation,thenewfacilityalsohousestheCounseling CenterandtheStudentHealthandWellnessCenter.Aonestopshopforbody,mind,andspirit.

AccordingcoMattMcGregor,directorofcampusrecreation, "Students,facultyandstaffareusingtheHealthandFitness Centeratahigherlevelthananticipatedandprospectivestudentsandtheirparentsareravingaboutthefacilityduring theirtoursofcampus.Weareexcitedchatthecenteriscreatingaclimateofhealthandwellnessoncampuswhileserving asamajorattractionfortherecruitmentandretentionof Longwoodstudents."

ThedesignoftheHealth&FitnessCenterreflects Longwood'scommitmenttopromotinganenvironmentally sustainablecampus,animportantinitiativethatwillbecoveredinafutureeditionofLongwoodMagazine.Thebuilding recentlywasawardedtheGoldrating-secondhighestoffour levels-intheLeadershipinEnergyandEnvironmental Design(LEED)GreenBuildingRacingSystemfromtheU.S. GreenBuildingCouncil,whichrecognizesenergysavingsfor newandexistingbuildings.TheHFCisthefirstGoldLEEDcertifiedhighereducationbuildinginVirginiaandthefirst LEEDGold-certifiedstudentrecreationcenterinthe Southeast.

TheHFC'sgreenfeaturesincludewaterlessurinals,low-flow showersandlavatoriestoreducewateruseby40percent; HVACequipmentfreeofozone-depletinghydrochloroAuorocarbonsandhalons;acarbondioxidemonitoringsystemto helpprovideadequateventilation;walk-offmatsatmain entranceschatreducetheamountofpollutantsenteringthe building;adhesives,sealants,paints,carpetandcomposite woodproductswithlowornovolatileorganiccompounds; ForestStewardshipCouncil-certifiedathleticwoodfloors, caseworkandwooddoors;54percentregionallymanufactured OnOurCover

materials;28percentrecycledcontentmaterials;andconstructionwastemanagementthatresultedinmorethan98percent ofthewastebeingrecycledratherthantakencothelandfill.

Aswewerepreparingchisissueforpress,wenoticedchatthe firstanniversaryoftheVirginiaTechtragedywasapproaching. Allofusinhighereducationwillrememberthesadevents ofApril16,2007.Likemostofourcollegiatecolleagues, LongwoodUniversityhasputanevenstrongeremphasison campussafetyandsecurityasnotedinourfeaturestorythat beginsonp.15.AsPresidentCormierhasoftennoted,the safetyandsecurityofourstudentsisournumberonepriority

Recognizingthecriticalneedforcomprehensiveandrapid communication,Longwoodimplementedanewmultifacetedemergencycommunicationplanwiththebeginning ofthe2007-08academicyear.Threenewcommunication systems-textmessaging,voicemessaging,andapublic address/sirenwarningsystem-aredesignedtocommunicate prompdywithfaculty,staff,andstudentsintheeventofan emergency.ThesesystemsareanintegralpartofLongwood's EmergencyOperationsPlanandContinuityofOperations Plan(COOP)andwillcomplementexistingcommunication coolsincludinge-mailandwebpageannouncementsand canbeusedsimultaneously.

Inthisissue,you'llalsolearnhowresidentiallifehasevolved fromthetraditionaldormitoryconcepttonewoff-campus apartmentcomplexeschatprovidestudentswiththetypeof amenitiesyouwouldexpectatahigh-endresort.

Butwait,there'smore,includingastoryabout"CallMe MISTER,"ascholarshipprogramdesignedtoidentify,recruit, prepare,andcertifyAfrican-Americanmalesaselementary/ middleschoolteachersinVirginia'spublicschools.Theprogram,whichoriginatedatClemsonUniversity,takesitsname fromSidneyPoitier'sfamousline,'TheycallmeMisterTibbs," inthe1967movieIntheHeatoftheNight.Andthe LongwoodCenterfortheVisualArtshasreceivedamajor donationoffolkartfromthecollectionofWilliam(Boo) andAnnOppenhimer,whofoundedtheFolkArtSociety ofAmerica.

ACTIVITYONCAMPUSREACHESNEWHEIGHTSEVERYSPRING.Thestudentsrespondtothe beautyandgrandeuroftheseasonwithrenewedenergyineveryfacetoftheirlives.Theathleticfields areconstantlyinuseandthewalkwaysacrosscampusarefulloflife.Thistimeofyearremindsusof thewondersthisworldhastooffer,andweasaninstitutionrealizetheresponsibilitythatisoursin preservingthisearth.Sustainabilitywillbeanongoingthemeinouractivities.Acomprehensiveplan isbeingdevelopedandwillbeunveiledinthecomingweekstotheentireLongwoodfamily.Itisour responsibilityalsotomakesurethatstudentsunderstandtheirrolesinsustainingourenvironment bothphysicallyandsocially.ThelessonstheylearnatLongwoodwillbeusedthroughouttheirlives toimpacttheircommunitiesandtheworld.

Eventsareabundantchistimeofyear,andrecentlywecelebratedourannualScholarshipLuncheon. Thisgatheringremainsoneofmymostcherishedoccasions.Scholarshipdonorsareinvitedtocampus sowecanexpressourappreciation,butthatisnotthehighlightoftheevent.Thedonorshavethe opportunitytomeettherecipientoftheirgenerosity,andthestudentsgettheopportunitytosay thankyou.Thisyear,LouMcKenzieGambill,'74andDr.WayneTinnellspokeasdonors,andtheir remarksweregenuineandpassionate.Thiseventisawonderfulreminderoftheimpactthatfinancial contributionsfromouralumniandfriendshaveonLongwoodandherstudentseveryday.

Wecontinuetoseeourcampusevolveandgrow.Weareinacampusmasterplanningprocessthat willprovideaplanforthefuture.IemphasizechatchisisnotaplanforusbutfortheLongwoodof thenextgeneration.EvenwiththebudgetconstraintsintheLegislature,ourplanswillmoveforward. Wecandependlessandlessonstatefundstofulfillourvision,andtuitionandfeeswillmeetonly afractionofourneeds.ThatiswhyIamsopleasedtoseethesteadyandstronggrowthofaculture ofphilanthropyintheLongwoodfamily.ThankyouforallyoudotomakeLongwoodsuccessful.

Longwood Debuts New Health and Fitness Center

The much-anticipated opening ofthe new Health and Fitness Center took place onAugust 28 as three runners crossedthe finish line to cut the ribbon on Longwood's newest building. Hundreds ofLongwood students, faculty and staffturned out for the ceremony and waited anxiously for their first look at the new two-and-ahalfstory, 75,000-square foot building

"Longwoodwillbeoneofthethinnestcampusesinthe Commonwealth,"saidPresidentPatriciaCormierreferring toLongwoodstudents,faculty,andstaffwhowillhaveaccess tothebuildingformorethan95hourseachweek.In additiontoCampusRecreation,thebuildinghousesthe CounselingCenterandtheStudentHealthandWellness Center."Webelievethatthisnewcenterwillshapethe

mind,body,andspirit-thewholeperson,ifyouwill,andthat hasalwaysbeenagoalofhighereducation,"saidDr.Cormier.

Followingtheceremony,guestscrowdedthemainentrances tothebuildingwheretheyweregreetedbyserversoffering SmoothiesamplesfromtheFreshen'sEnergyZone.Avariety ofhealthysnacksandbeverageswereofferedthroughoutthe center.Studentsparticipatedinafree-throwcontestandwatched demonstrationsofweightandcardioequipmentandthe30-foot rockclimbingwall.Give-awaysincludedsignature"Creating aFirU"t-shirtsandwaterboccies.

The$13.6millionbrickandglassbuildingwasdesignedby Hastings&ChivettaofSc.LouisandbuiltbyJ.E.Jamerson &SonsInc.ofAppomattoxonthesireofwhathadbeena parkinglotforcommuterstudents.ItfacesFranklinStreetand thesouthendofFrazerResidenceHall.Detailsofthebuilding includeacurvedsectionofglassatthecornerofFranklinand SouthMain;askylightoverthefirnesscenter;andfourwhite columnssupportedbybrickpillarsatthemainentrance facingFranklinStreet.@

Ihadtheopportunitytoworkinthe HealthandFitnessCenterforafew weekslastsummertoprepareforthe grandopeninginAugust.

lewasagreatexperiencegettingtoknowthenewstaffmembersonbothaprofessionalandpersonallevel.Organizing weightsecsandpiecingtogetherequipmentgavemeafirst handlookatalloftheplanningandeffortchatwentinto finishingthenewfacility.Everyday,Isawhowmanydifferentpeopleplayedaroleinchecompletionofabuildingchat Longwooddeservescoshowoff.

AsamemberofLongwood'swomen'ssoccerteam,Ican appreciateagoodworkoutandthepositiveresultsitbrings. Onethingchatcanmakeaworkoutevenmoreproductiveis seeingagymfullofocherstudentsandfacultymemberswho arealsoworkingcomeettheirpersonalfimessgoals.This extraordinaryfacilitybringsmorepeoplecotheweightroom andincreasesbothself-inducedandhead-ro-headcompetitionthroughtheuseofawidevarietyofcardiovascularand weightequipment.

HavinggrownupinFarmville,IhaveseenLongwoodgo throughagreatnumberofchanges.Icanhonestlysaychat theopeningoftheHealthandFitnessCenterisoneofthe transformationschatIammostproudof.Noconlydoeschis buildingofferstudentsaplacewheretheycanexceloutside ofcheclassroom,italsodemonstrateshowmuchtheadministrationcaresaboutchephysicalandmentalwell-beingof theLongwoodcommunity.@

Dr.JeanGoeppingersaidthatnomatterhowmanyclinicians ornewfacilitieswereaddedinacommuniryhealthsetting therewouldbecontinuedrequestsformore.Shetaught "Untilwedeveloppartnershipstopromoteselfcare,wellness, andcommunityhealth,wewillcontinuetoexpandandneed morehealthservices."

WhenIwasgiventhehonorofleadingLongwood'sStudent HealthandWellnessCenter,wewereintheprocessofphasingoutthe"infirmary"conceptofhealthservice.Instead,we decidedtoadoptaphilosophyofhealthpartnership,self-care promotion,andcommunityhealthandwellness.Webelieved thatthemorewecouldteachstudentsself-care,themorewe wouldbeabletoreducetheexpectationthathealthis achievedthroughhealthcareprovidersandservicesPersonal responsibilityforwell-beingandhealthychoiceswouldbe adevelopmentalgoaltobeachieved.

Sinceitsinception,theHealthandFitnessCenterhasbeen designedtobeaninclusivecenterwithcomplementaryservicesfocusingonphysicalandmentalhealthandwellness. Wehavealsoseenincreasedopportunitiesforeffectivecommunicationandwellnesseducation.Ourchallengehasbeen tocometogetherasthreeseparateunits(previouslyhoused inseparatelocations)andbecomeone"WellnessUnit."We believethatthe"mind,body,andspirit"ofindividualsis worthyofaddressinginallofoureffortstocreateaculture ofwellnessinthecommuniry.

Inmydiscussionswithstudents,Iremindthemthatthe HealthandFitnessCenterisaninvaluableresourcewhere theycanlearntobehealthy,happy,andfitandachieve theirpersonalandacademicgoalsWiththenewHealth andFitnessCenterasabackdrop,thesettingforourwork isinspiringandinstrumentalaswestrivetobeamodel forwellnessthroughoutthecommunity.Thedoorsare open.Icannotwaittoseewhathealthypartnerships willhappennext.@

SinceIarrivedatLongwoodin1986, theCounselingCenterhasevolvedto meetthechangingneedsofstudents andthecampuscommunity.

Whileawellnessphilosophyhasalwaysbeenthefoundation ofourefforts,todayitisattheforefrontofagrowingawarenessabouttheimportanceofeducatinganddevelopingthe wholepersoninmind,body,andspirit.

IhavelongdreamtofhousingtheCounselingCenterin thesamebuildingwiththeStudentHealthandWellness Center.Nowthatwearefinallytogether,alongwithCampus Recreation,weareinspiredbyanewenergyandsynergyas weworktofullyintegrateourservicesandmeetthegoalsof ourmissionstatement:"TheWellnessUnitisdedicatedto providingopporcunitiesthatengagethephysical,spiritual, emotional,social,intellectual,andoccupationaldimensions oftheLongwoodcommunity.Throughthepracticeofprofessionalandethicalcare,qualityinterventions,andenhanced facilitiesandprogramming,ourfocusisonwellnesslifestyles andanenvironmentthatsupportslearning,self-care,andthe developmentofcitizenleaders."

In2006,theCounselingCenterjoinedapproximately 170counselingcentersintheworldandonlyfiveinVirginia toearnaccreditationbytheInternationalAssociationof CounselingServices(IACS).TheIACSBoardofAccreditation

granteditsapprovalfollowingayearlongprocessthatinvolved athoroughprogramevaluationandsitevisit.Alsoconsidered wasourpendingmovetotheHealthandFitnessCenter whereourofferingswouldincludesoundproofedoffices,a grouproom,andawellnesslibraryincludingfull-spectrum lighttherapytotreatSeasonalAffectiveDisorder.

Aswepreparedtoopenthenewcenter,Iwasconcernedthat studentsmightbereluctanttovisitusinournewlocation. Afterall,weareinconspicuouslylocatedinthesouthwest cornerofthethirdfloorandovershadowedbythewonderful fitnessfacilitiesonthefloorsbelow.ButIwaswrongstudentsliketheprivacyourcenteroffersWeknowthis becausestudentsarecominginnumbersthatfillour counselingschedulesatleastaweekinadvance.Mirroring nationaltrends,morestudentsarecomingwithanincreasing severityofpsychologicalproblemsWehavemanagedaflurry ofpsychologicalemergenciesforwhichwesometimes recommendpsychiatricassessment.Inaddition,thereisan increaseinthenumberofstudentsonmedicationthatis oftenprescribedbeforetheyarriveatLongwood.These trendssignalaneedforadditionalcollegecounselors(not onlyatLongwoodbutalsoonothercampuses)andfora heightenedpublicawarenessofthe"crisisinmentalhealth" incollegesanduniversitiesthroughouttheUnitedStates

AtLongwoodUniversity,itisaprivilegetoworkwith studentsandcaringandskilledpeoplewhoarecommitted tostudentsuccess.Furthermore,itisgratifyingtoknowthat theCounselingCenterandthecomplementaryservices offeredwithintheHealthandFitnessCenterarepromoting positivelifestylechangesthatwillimpactourstudents throughouttheirlives.@

All the Comforts ofHome Residential Living Takes On A New Meaning

Thesearejustsomeofthebenefitsthatnearly1,000 Longwoodstudents(sophomores,juniors,andseniors)are enjoyingasresidentsofthreeuniversity-managedapartment complexes-LongwoodLandings,LongwoodVillage,and LancerPark.

Duringthepastdecade,themeaning of"thecampuslivingandlearning environment"hasevolvedsignificantly. Collegeshaveworkedtirelesslyto findinnovativewaystomeetand exceedtheeducational,social,

cultural,andphysicalneeds ofstudents.Today,however,they mustalsofindwaystoaddressthe highexpectationsofstudentsand parentswhenitcomestoliving inthelearningenvironment.

ANewApproach toResidentialLiving

Collegesanduniversitiesacrosschecountryarefindingchat moststudentsarenolongercontentcoliveintraditionalresidencehallsforchemajorityoftheircollegecareers.Once pastthefreshmanandsophomoreyears,manyseekhousing optionswithamenitieschatwereoncereservedforcollege graduatesandnewly-marriedcouples.Privatebedrooms, largelivingspaces,fullkitchens,cable/satelliteTVconnections,high-speedInternetservice,andcomplexeschatoffer avarietyofaccivitiesarebecomingstandardfareforinscicucionsthatwanecoattractandretainstudents.Providing avarietyofdiningoptionsisalsoachallengeasstudents livingoffcampuscontinuecopurchasefoodplansinuniversity-sponsoreddiningservices.Housinganddiningofficers areworkingcofindcreativewayscomeetthesedemands whilecontinuingcoenhancechetraditionalresidencehall livingarrangement.

AtLongwoodUniversitywehaveconfrontedthesechallengeswhilealsofacingcheaddedobstacleofaland-locked campuschatencompassesa51-acretriangleofpropertyin themiddleoftownAcquiringlandadjacentcocampusin ordercobuildstudenthousingisnearlyimpossible,notco mentioncoscly.Furthermore,onecannotpredicttheliving preferencesofstudents10co20yearsinchefuture,so knowingwhatcobuildtodayisdifficulc.In1998,withthe decisionmadecoexpandchestudentpopulationtheuniversityfacedsignificantdeferredmaintenanceofcampushousingtotalingnearly$100million.In2003,withthese thoughtsinmind,webegancoexplorealcernacivesfor expandingourresidentialoptionsforLongwoodstudents. Aproposalwascreatedforanalternativehousingproject adjacentcocampusWeenvisionedapartment-styleliving chatwouldprovidestudentschesafetyandconvenienceof "livingoncampus"whilehavingchat"livingoffcampus" feeling.However,sinceLongwoodisascareinstitution,we quicklyrealizedchatgoingthroughtheburdensomescare procurementsystemwouldbeverycoscly.Thus,inJune 2004,theLongwoodRealEstateFoundationwasformed. leisaprivate501(c)(3)entitychatexistsbyandfor LongwoodUniversityandfunctionscoacquireproperties whicharethenleasedcocheuniversity.

In2007-08,nearly1,000studentsareresidingamongthree apartmentcommunities-LongwoodLandings,Longwood

Village,andLancerVillage-chatwerebuiltorpurchased bychefoundation.Someofcheamenitiesandfeaturesofche apartmentsareprivatebedrooms(somewithprivatebaths), fullkitchens(mostwithdishwashers),washer/dryerunits, largelivingareas,high-speedIncernec,andcabletelevision. Alloftheapartmentsarecompletelyfurnished.Twoofche threecommunitieshavefitnessroomsandswimmingpools andonehasahoccub,acanningbed,andagameroom.

ThenewestofchethreecommunitiesisLongwoodLandings atMid-TownSquare,whichopenedinAugust2006. Locatedwithinwalkingdistanceofcampus,theresidential villageincludesfour,four-storybuildingswithchecopthree floorsdedicatedcostudenthousingandthegroundfloor devotedcoleasedretailspace.Longwoodstudentsoccupy 96four-bedroomand24single-bedroomapartments.Retailers includeBarnes&NoblewhichoperatesLongwood'sbookstore.ThehybridscoreincludesaStarbucksCafeandserves boththeuniversityandchecommunity.

Longwoodstudentsandtheirparentsappreciateche advantagesofoff-campushousingchatismanagedbythe university.leoffersthebestofbothworlds.Studentsenjoy chemultiplebenefitsandamenitiesofapartmentliving, whilefamiliesfeelassuredchatcheenvironmentinwhich theyliveissafeasitismanagedandstaffedbyLongwood residentassistants.Amaintenancestaffisoncall24/7co respondcorequests,andcheLongwoodDepartmentof PublicSafetyregularlypatrolschecomplexes.Inaddition, academicyearleasesmeanchatstudentsarenotlockedinto 12-monchleases.TheaddedresidentialspacehastheadvantageoffurtherusebyLongwoodhousingofficialsfor "swingspace"coreplaceon-campushousingtakenoffline forrenovation.

BrockCommons

ThemostdefiningtransformationofLongwood'scampus waschecreationofBrockCommons,apedestrianmallcompletewithtrees,planes,grass,fountains,andalargetiered plaza.BrockCommonswasoncenarrowPineStreet, abusycorridorchatdividedchecampusInDecember2002, thestreetwasclosedandthe$7.5millionprojectbegan. InApril2004,aformaldedicationservicewasheldhonoring MaconF.BrockJr.andhiswife,JoanPerryBrock,'64, whodonated$3millioncocheproject.

Asidefromriddingthecampusofanunsightlyandunsafe publicstreet,BrockCommonshasunitedthecampusand createdaninvitingspacewherestudentsmingle,townspeoplewalkforexercise,dogsandchildrenplayinthefountains,andthecampuscommunitygathersforformaland informaloutdoorceremonies.Itisalmostimpossibleto imaginethecampusbeforeBrockCommons

InNovember2005,planswereannouncedtoconstructthe HealthandFitnessCenter,a75,000square-footbuilding designedtointegratetheofficesofCampusRecreation, theCounselingCenter,andtheStudentHealthandWellness Center-mind,body,andspirit-inoneconvenientlocationThefacility,whichopenedinAugust2007,features onemulti-purposegymandtwofull-courtgymnasiums,

Theplazaisaccessiblefromthegaragebothbyanelevator andstairways.

Addinggreenspacetocampuswasanotherissuethatwas resolvedwiththecreationofBrockCommons.Areasthat wereonceasphaltarenowfilledwithgrass,trees,and plants.Someestimatethatthereisperhapsfivetimesmore greenspaceoncampusthanbefore.TheCommonsisalso adornedwithsculpturemadepossiblebyLongwood'sArr DepartmentandtheLongwoodCenterfortheVisualArts. TheOutdoorSculptureProgrambringscontemporaryart toBrockCommonsforstudents,faculty,andstaff toenjoyonadailybasis.Theinitiativeallowsartiststo completearesidencyduringwhichtheyinstalltheirwork withthehelpofstudents,andpresentlecturesand workshopsforclassesandstudentgroups.Thegoal oftheprogramistodisplayavarietyofworkoverthe courseofseveralyears.

AstheheartofLongwood'scampus,BrockCommonsis mostcertainlyafocalpointofourrevitalizedlivingand learningenvironment.

Asnoted,Longwood'sCounselingCenter,staffedbythree counselors,islocatedinthenewbuilding.Thismoveprovidesadditionalspaceforconfidentialcounselingservices, classroomspace,aresourcelibrary,agrouproom/workshop area,andalighttherapyroomtotreatstudentswith SeasonalAffectiveDisorder.

TheHealthandFitnessCenterplaysacriticalroleinthe physicaldevelopmentofallLongwoodstudentsandespeciallyourstudent-athleteswhobegancompetingattheNCAA DivisionIlevelin2007-08TheHealthandFitnessCenter isquicklybecomingoneofthemostpopularleisurespots oncampus.

Asthelifestylesandpreferencesofstudentscontinue tochange,collegeadministratorswillwitnessenormous challengesarisingfromthelivingandlearningenvironment. Whatwemustbeevermindfulof,however,isour unwaveringcommitmenttotheeducationoftomorrow's citizenleaders.@I

Inlightoftheincreasingnumberof crisesaffectingcollegecampusesand thecriticalneedforcomprehensive andrapidcommunication,Longwood Universityhasimplementedamultifacetedemergencycommunication planwiththebeginningofthe 2007-08academicyear.

Threenewcommunicationsystems-textm�ssaging,voice messaging,andapublicaddress/sirenwarningsystem-are designedcocommunicatepromptlywithfaculty,staff,and studentsintheeventofanemergency.Thesesystemsarean integralpartofLongwood'sEmergencyOperationsPlanand ContinuityofOperationsPlan(COOP)andwillcomplementexistingcommunicationcoolsincludinge-mailand webpageannouncementsandcanbeusedsimultaneously.

"Followingacompleteevaluationofourplan,wedecidedto enhanceourexistingsystemswiththeseadditionalmeasures inordercoensurecomprehensiveandeffectivecommunicationwithfaculty,staff,andstudents,"saidDr.FrankMoore, vicepresidentofinformationandinstructionaltechnology services."Wefeelconfidentinthisplanwhichofferssimultaneouscommunicationviathreeindependentsystems."

Longwood'stextmessagingsystemisprovidedbyRoam Securewhichcantransmit18,000textmessageswithinone minute.Tworemoteservershostthesystem.Forthe2007 fallsemester,Longwoodstudentswererequiredcosubmit cellphonenumbersbyAugust31Forsubsequentsemesters, studentsmustverifycellphoneinformationrwoweeksprior coregistrationforeachterm.Iftheinformationhasnotbeen reviewedandverifiedbythestudent,aholdwillbeplaced onrhestudent'saccountprohibitingregistration.

Facultyandstaffcellphone numberswillalsobe placedintothesystem.

Thepublicaddress/ warningsirensystem willtransmitvoicemessagesorwarningsirens. Theuseofvoiceisconsideredcriticalasclearinstructions canbegivenanddoesnotrelyuponthe campuscommunitytoidentifythemeaningof varioussirentones.Messagesarewritteninadvanceand pre-approved.Directionalspeakersaremountedcentrally aroundcampuswithacomputercontrolstationinthedispatchofficeoftheLongwoodUniversityPoliceDepartment. SpeakersandsirensarealsolocatedatLongwood'soff-campusapartmentcomplexes(LancerParkandLongwood Village)andtheathleticfieldsatJohnstonDrive.

TheTownofFarmville,whichhasimplementedvoicemessagingthroughtheHoneywellInstantAlertsystem,hasprovided thevoicemessagingcapabilitytoLongwoodfreeofcharge. Thissystemtransmitsvoicemessagesthatareeitherrecorded ortranslatedfromtypedtextandcanbeusedtoplacevoice telephonecallstocampustelephonesaswellascellulartelephones.Voicetransmissionsaretypicallyslowerthandata transmissions,suchastextmessaging;however,thereare situationswhenvoicemessagingmaybeappropriate.

We"hittheblues"onlyoncewhenRogerproceededto LongwoodAvenuetobackupfellowofficerJohnJohnson whohadstoppedadriverforpossibleDUI."Wetrytoback eachotherupasmuchaswecan-youneverknowwhatto expectorwhat'sgoingtohappen."Luckilyforthisdriver,he passedthebreathalyzertest,butjusttobeonthesafeside, OfficerJohnsoncalledafriendtoserveasaDD(designated

RobertR."Bob"BeachwaswiththeFairfaxCountyPolice Department(FCPD)from1977untilretiringinMarch 2002.Hebecameahoscagenegotiatorin198I,cookover thehostagenegotiationunitin1985andranituntilhe retired.HeworkedwiththeK-9unitfornineyearsas ahandlerandsupervisor,wascommanderoftheRescon Districtstation(oneofnine),wasassistantdistrictcommander,twiceranthetrafficdivision,andfinally,after becomingoneofonlyeightmajorsin2000,ranthe FCPD'scriminaljusticeacademy.

BeachbeganhiscareerwiththeLynchburgPolice Departmentin1970.Hebecameasergeantbeforeleaving in1975fortheHerndonPoliceDepartmentinNorthern Virginia.Heworkedforchatpoliceforcefor18months, includinghisseineasaSWATofficer,untilswitchingto theFCPD.

Dillon,whohasbeenastatetrooperandafirefighterparamedic,beganinMarch2006.His"staff,"ashesaid withasmile,consistssolelyofhimselfandnewlyhired RaySears,thefireandlifesafetyofficer,whograduated fromLongwoodinMay2007.Dillonalsoworkswith

RayHeinrich,'97,directoroflaboratoryservicesandchemicalhygieneofficer,whoassistswiththeuniversity'schemical wastedisposalprogram.Longwoodpreviouslyhadaposition devotedprimarilytofiresafety,heldbyRandallJohnson,'01.

"Thehighlightsofmyjobincludefiresafety,whichapplies toourresidencehallsandallofourfacilities,andoccupationalsafetyandhealth,"Dillonsaid."Forexample,if there'saproblemwithasidewalkorlightingorahandrail, orifsomeoneslipsandfalls,welookatittoseeifthereisa safetyconcernthatneedstobeaddressed.Weinvestigateall safety-relatedincidentsoncampus,welookatproactive solutionstosafetyconcerns,andwemanagetheuniversity's hazardouswastedisposal.

"Wemaintaintheemergencycommunicationsplan,which isbeingcompletelyrevisedandrestructuredintoaseriesof emergencyoperationsmanualsdesignedtoclarifyanddesignatedutiesandhowtheuniversityrespondstospecificincidentsoremergencies,"hecontinued.'Therewillbeamanualforinfectiousdiseasessuchaspandemicflu,avianflu andMRSA;amanualforweatheremergenciesincluding hurricanes,tornadoes,lightningeventsandsnow;amanual forbuildingemergenciessuchasfires,bombthreatsand earthquakes;andamanualforanall-hazardsoverviewthat setsthefoundationfortheemergencyoperationsplan. Oppenhimers Donate Major FolkArt Collection to Longwood and the LCVA

In1983,William(Boo)andAnnOppenhimerheardthat HowardFinsterhadbeeninvited to appearonTheTonight ShowStarringjohnnyCarson.Yearsearlier,Finster,aBaptist preacherinGeorgia,hadlefthispulpitforhispaintbrush, acceptinganewcallingto"paintsacredart."Inresponseto thiscall,Finsterwouldcreatenearly50,000works-whathe called"messagesfromGod"-madeoutofmaterialsathand, whetherplywood,Plexiglas,oremptyturpentinecans,each paintedcofeaturecontemporaryandbiblicalscenesand annotatedwithscripturesandspiritualadmonitions.

Bytheearly80s,Finscer'sworkbegan to garnerregionaland evennationalacclaim.AnnOppenhimerrecalls,"Whenwe foundoutthatHowardwasgoingtoappearonJohnny

Carson,Boosaid,'We'dbetterbuywhatwecannowbefore hegetsfamousonTv:'Sowewent to seehimandbought 50piecesofart.Manyofthemwerequitesmall,butallthe same,weoftensaychatitchangedourlives."

Fromchatbeginning,theOppenhimerskeptbuilding, amassingoneofthemoreimportantfolkartcollectionsinthe countryandfoundingtheFolkArcSocietyofAmerica(FASA). Thisyear,theOppenhimershavegivenandpromisedpartof thatrenownedcollectioncotheLongwoodCenterforthe VisualArts(LCVA),alongwithgenerousfinancialresourcesin supportofthegift.In2006,theOppenhimersgave42works offolkarttotheLCVAandapproximately100worksin 2007.Theyplantoaddtothedonationeachyear.

TheOppenhimers'collectionofworkbyfolk,or self-caught,artistshastraveledthecountryin exhibitionssuchas"PointofView"and"Personal Preferences"(bothfeaturingAmericanfolkarc), and"TheInnerEye"(featuringfolkarcof India).TheOppenhimers'collectionhasbeen shownattheLCVAandatothermuseumsin Virginia,Florida,Georgia,andNorthCarolina. Ann'sslidesofFinster'sParadiseGardenarein thecollectionoftheArchivesofAmericanArt.

TheOppenhimers'collectionislargely contemporary,primarilycomposedofworks madefrom1977tothepresent,butthere areafewolderpieces,includingone artworkmadecirca1900.Thegifttothe LCVAincludesworksonpaper,suchas severalserigraphsbythelateFinster. TheLCVAhasalsoreceived sculpturalworkssuchasAbraham LincolnCriss'1988 Roosterwith RedWattles, madeofcarvedwood, marblesandothermaterialsathand, andpaintingssuchasMinnie Adkins'1989 DesertScene, whichis acryliconcardboardwithacorncob frame,orAndersonJohnson's1990 Russian Woman, donewithhousepaincon aFormicakitchencouncerrop.

Asfolkartcollectors,theOppenhimers havepersonallymetmanyoftheartists whoseworkstheycollect.They regularlyvisitedartistsattheirhomes, includingFinsterathisParadise GardennearSummerville,Ga.,and JamesHaroldJennings,wholivedand workedinfiveschoolbusesinthetown ofPinnacle,N.C.TheOppenhimersbegan collectingfolkartaftervisitingartistMilesCarpenter inWaverly,VaMrs.Oppenhimerexplains,"Idiscovered awonderfulpersoncreatingwonderfulart,andthiswasthe beginningofmanyvisitsromeetotherartistsandtosee theartwecametoknowasfolkart."

TheLancers,alongwiththeUniversityofCalifornia-Davis andtheUniversityofNorthernColorado,competedduring 2007-08asthenewestmembersofNCAADivisionI.

Dr.CormierhadinformedtheNCAAinaletterdated November12,2002ofLongwood'sintentiontoreclassify itsintercollegiateathleticprogramtoDivisionIstatus,and theinstitutionbegananNCAA-mandatedfive-yearprocess, includingafour-yearreclassificationperiod(2003-07)that followedaone-year"exploratoryperiod"(2002-03),to changeitsmembershipfromDivisionIItoDivisionI. Thisisthefirstreclassificationclassfollowingatwo-year moratoriumwithintheNCAAthatliftedonSeptember1, 2002fornewmembersandrequestsforchangeofdivision membership.

Themen'sgolfandwomen'slacrosseprogramsenjoyed DivisionIeligibilityduring2006-07viatheNCAA's MultidivisionalReclassificationthatpermittedreclassifying schoolstodesignatetwosports(excludingbasketball)forDI eligibilityoneyearaheadoftheschool'sremainingprograms.

Longwoodmen'sgolfearnedaninvitationtothepose-season NCAAEastRegionallastMayinitsfirstyearofeligibility. Now,withofficialcertificationandeligibilityacrossthe board,theLancerswillbelookingformoreNCAA pose-seasonqualificationsinthenearfuture.8

Longwood University inducted its secondAthletics Hall ofFame Class on November 10, 2007 in Dorrill Dining Hall. The Class includedChurch Road native and former baseball star Dennis Hale, '91, an AllAmerican both on the field (NCAA 2ndTeam) and in the classroom (CoSIDNGTE 1st-Team); formerwomen's golf_All-American Charlaine Coetzee Hirst, '95, a three-time National GolfCoaches Association (NGCA) Division II National Champion (1993-95) and winner ofthe 1995 Today'sTop Eight Award; alongwith Petersburg native and former men's basketball standout Kevin Jefferson, '90, the school's career leader in points (1,806)

Dennis Hale, '91

Hale (1988-91) capped a spectacular four-year pitching career in 1991 with his selection to the NCAA Division II All-America 2nd-Team, as well as being named to the 1991 CoSIDAAcademicAll-America 1st-Team. Hewas also the 1991 South Atlantic Region Pitcher oftheYear and Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) College Division Player oftheYear, compiling a 13-2 record and a 2.48 ERA through 123.2 innings pitched as the Lancers finished a school-record 41-8 while advancing to the Division II World Series. Hale still holds school records for careerwins (33), consecutive wins (19), and winning percentage (.846, 33-6), andhasschool season-records for wins (13), complete games

(IO),inningspitched(123.2),andwinningpercentage (1.000,11-0,1990).Haletossedoneno-hitterduringhis career,againstMountSaintMary'sin1988,andalsoranks secondincareerERA(2.99),aswellasthirdincareer strikeouts(224)andinningspitched(283.0).

TheJohnH.andKarenWilliamsChichesterScienceCenter wasofficiallydedicatedonDecember7,2007duringa ceremonyinthebuilding'sfirstfloorlobby.JohnChichester waspresidentproternoftheVirginiaSenate.Karenisa 1974LongwoodgraduatewhoservedontheLongwood FoundationBoardfor12years.Guestsfortheevent

Hehadbeena"championofhighereducation"who"stood firmlybyLongwoodintheaftermathoftheGreatFireof 2001,carefullystewardingtheprocessforrebuildingour belovedRotunda,andsupportedenthusiasticallyLongwood's requestforfundingalong-overduenewsciencecenter," accordingtoaresolutionthataccompaniedthenaming.

KarenChichesterwasadirectoroftheLongwood Foundation,whichmanagestheuniversity'sprivatefunds, from1994to2000andagainfrom2001untillastspring. Shewaspresidentfrom1996to2000.Shewasa"highly effective"presidentduring"someof(theFoundation's)most challengingtimes,"saystheBoardofVisitorsresolution.

AfterearningaB.S.inmathatLongwood,shetaughtfor threeyearsatCovingtonHighSchool,fromwhichshe graduated,thenmovedtoRichmondandworkedinthe marketingdepartmentofaninsurancecompanyfornearly sevenyears.SheandJohnweremarriedin1983,andshe workedfromthenuntil2002inthesmall,family-owned insuranceagencyinFredericksburgofwhichhewaspresident.@

GroundwasbrokeJ1inspring2007forLongwoodUniversity's CenterforCommunicationStudiesandTheatre,whichwill houseoneoftheuniversity'sfastestgrowingprograms.

Thethree-story,41,983-squarefootbuildingisbeingbuilt betweenthesouthendofBedfordHall,towhichitwill connectonthefirstfloor,andFranklinStreet.lewillbe homecotheDepartmentofCommunicationStudiesand Theatre,whichhasabout140studentsmajoringin communicationstudiesandabout50majorsintheatre. Thecommunicationstudiesmajor,launchedin2000, isoneofLongwood'sfastestgrowingprograms.

TheDepartmentiscurrentlyhousedinJarmanHall,built in1951,whichisduetoberenovatedaftertheCenterfor CommunicationStudiesandTheatreiscompleted.Thenew buildingwillhaveahighlyflexible174-seac"blackbox" cheater,inwhichtheseatsandstagecanbemovedaround, whichwillbecomehomecoLongwoodTheatreproductions. Astudiocheater,ofabout80seatsandalsoflexible,willbe usedforstudentproductions.Therealsowillbeascene shop,acostumeshopandadraftinglab.

Craig Rogers SelectedAs NewVice President for UniversityAdvancement

Craig Rogers, formerly executive vice president ofthe Bon Secours Richmond Health Care Foundation, is Longwood University's newvice president for university advancement.

Rogers, who began on August 27, replaced Bobbie Burton, who will continue her role as executivedirectorofHull Springs Farm in Westmoreland County.

"Craig brings a strong background in both higher education and development to Longwood, and we will ertainly put his experience to goodwork," said Dr. Patricia Cormier, Longwood's president.

Rogers, acertified fund raising executive (CFRE), was executive vice president of the Bon Secours Richmond Health Care Foundation from November 1999 until May 31, 2007. During his tenure, philanthropic support to the Foundation increased by 400 percent, and the Foundation completed thelargestcapital campaign in its history. The Foundation supports Bon Secours Richmond's four acute-care hospitals and the broad range ofmission services delivered through thesystem's community commitment. Rogers led a comprehensive development program at Bon Secours Richmond that raised $4 million in current support annually.

From 1992 to 1999 Rogers worked in development at Hampden-Sydney College. As director ofmajor gifts during his last four years at H-SC, he planned anddirected 12 regional campaigns that comprised a successful $60 million capital campaign. As director ofcurrentsupporthis first

threeyears, he directed theannual fund program, volunteer networking, direct mail marketing, and staffsolicitation. While at H-SC, hewas president ofrhe UnitedWay Board ofPrince Edward County.

A Charlottesville native and lifelongVirginian, Rogers is a graduate ofthe University ofNorth Carolina where he played lacrosse. He was a member ofthe national championship ream in 1981 during his junior year, and he is a NCAAlacrosse official (he hasworkedgames involving all Atlantic Coast Conference teams and the 1998 Division III national championship game) He and his wife, Denise, who reaches kindergarten-first grade at Fuqua School, have two eight-year-old sons, Caleb and Connor.

Rogers' predecessor atLongwood, Bobbie Burton, successfully led rhe university's first comprehensive campaign, which raised more than $33 million, and the Longwood Foundation's assets grew from $16.5 million to more than $50 million during her tenure. She came to Longwood in March 1998.

Hull Springs Farm, bequeathed to the Longwood Foundation in 1999 by Mary FarleyAmes Lee, '38, consists of643 acres in rhe Mount Holly area ofWestmoreland County, on rhe Northern Neck. Burton will be responsible for developingvarious revenue streams including wetland mitigation banking, agricultural enterprise, facility rental and grant funding to supportgrowingprogramming at the Farm, primarily in environmental education.

Anna Collins, '06, Recognized as Best First-YearTeacher

Collins,akindergartenteacheratRashkisElementary inChapelHill,N.C.,receivedtheDeanSmithAward forPromisingNewTeachersfromtheChapelHillCarrboroPublicSchoolsinMay2007.Rashkis,oneof 15schoolsinherdistrict,hasabout650studentsin gradespre-kindergartenthroughfive.

Sheri McGuire Honored with Top Award from the Virginia SBDC Network

SheriMcGuire,'91,executivedirectorofthe LongwoodSmallBusinessDevelopment Center(SBDC)network,hasbeenselected thestate'soutstandingSBDCemployee. I

InJune2007,McGuirereceivedthe2007StateStaraward fromtheVirginiaSBDCnetwork.AStateStarfromeach statewasrecognizedduringthe27thannualconferenceof theAssociationofSmallBusinessDevelopmentCenters, heldinDenver.

Asexecutivedirector,McGuireworksfromLongwood SBDC'smainoffice,ontheLongwoodcampus.Otheroffices areinSouthBoston,Martinsville,PetersburgandDanville, eachofwhichisstaffedwithadirector.

"Ourmissionistoprovideeducation,consulcingandresearch fornewandexistingsmallbusinessesinsouthernVirginia," McGuiresaid."Weserve26localitiesthroughourfiveoffices. WewereoneofthefirstSBDCsinVirginiaalongwiththe oneatJamesMadisonUniversity;bothcenterswerefounded in1989."

LastyeartheLongwoodSBDCnetworkserved457clients, provided2,937hoursofconsulcingand52training/seminar

sessions,andassisteditsclientsincreatingorretaining369 jobs.Clientsreportedtheabilitytoraiseacollective$22 millioninnewcapitalfortheirbusinessesasaresultofthe consulcingservicestheyreceived.Amongthecenter'sservices, whicharefree,arebusinessplanning,financialanalysis, marketplanningandresearch.Thenetworkisconsideredan economicdevelopmentoutreachofLongwoodUniversity.

McGuire,aMecklenburgCountynative,firstworkedatthe LongwoodSBDCasastudentinternduringthe1990-91 academicyear.ShewasamemberofPhiKappaPhinational honorsociety,wasnamedOutstandingSeniorinbusiness administrationandgraduatedsummacum laude (heronlyB wasintennis)withaB.S.inbusinessadministration.She workedattheLongwoodSBDCpart-timefromJanuary1992 toJanuary1993whenshebecamefull-time.Shelefttowork asacontrollerforacompanytheSBDChadassisted, AppomattoxRiverManufacturingCompanyofKeysville, thenreturnedaboutayearlaterasseniorbusinessanalyst in1996.Shebecameassociatedirectorin1999 anddirectorin2005

Longwood Student Participates In Statewide Program for Nonprofit Leadership

LongwoodUniversityseniorBeaCornett wasoneof28collegestudentsfromacross

Virginiawhospentlastsummertrying toimprovelifeinthestate'smost impoverishedcommunity. '

Cornett,whoplansacareerinnonprofitwork,participated inthePhoenixProject'sfirstNonprofitLeadershipProgram, heldfromJune10throughAug.4inPetersburg.The students,whowerehousedatVirginiaStateUniversity,took classesforthefirstthreeweeks,thenforthenextfiveweeks didvariouscommunityprojectsformorethanrwodozen localnonprofitandmunicipalorganizations.Cornett developedamarketingplanforFortLee'sMorale,Welfare andRecreation(MWR)office,whichcoordinatesthebase's socialandrecreationalactivities.

"MypartnerandIsurveyedover800people,"saidCornett, whoreceivedinternshipcredit."Itabulatedthedataand enteredeverysurveyindividuallyintoasurveysoftware program,thendidacompletemarketingplanthattheycan useforthenextyear.OnAugust1,wedida90-minute PowerPointpresentationforArmypersonnelofficersand MWRexecutives.Afterward,awomanfromMWRtoldme theyhadthoughtaboutcontractingchisouttoaprivate firm,whichwouldhavecostchem$30,000.Theyfeltlike theygotabetterresultforfree."

ThePhoenixProject,foundedinJanuary2006,isa statewidenonprofitorganizationthatseekstoprepare undergraduateandgraduatestudentstobecome"Virginia's

nextgenerationofsocialentrepreneursandnonprofit leaders...torevitalizeeconomicallyandsociallydistressed communities."Throughouttheyear,thePhoenixProject doeseconomicandcommunitydevelopmentprojectsin Petersburg."Theprogramisaboutsocialentrepreneurship, whichiseffectingpositivesocialchange,"saidCornett. "Theclassroomworkwasincense;wewereinlecturesforsix hoursaday.IoriginallywantedtoworkfortheState Department,butafterdoingstudy-abroadtripstoChina andAfrica,IrealizedchatIwantedtodointernationalaid work.WhenIheardabouttheNonprofitLeadership Program,Iknewitwasperfectformycareerplans."

Cornettismajoringinpoliticalsciencewithaconcentration inglobalpoliticsandminoringinmusicSheischairmanof theJudicialBoard,recordingsecretaryofSigmaKappa sororityandaPeerMentor.ThedaughterofformerNavy officers,shewasborninIcelandandalsolivedinCanada andEnglandbeforemovingtoWarrentonwhenshewas14.

Herinternationaltravelshavecontinued.InMay2005,she wentonLongwood'sfirsttriptoAnhuiUniversityinChina, withwhichLongwoodhasapartnership,andshehasbeen onrwoLongwoodtripstoAfrica:MaliinDecember2005January2006andNigerinJanuary2007.InDecembershe returnedtoAfrica,toBenin,onatripsponsoredbythe CouncilonLearningLiberalArtsthroughGlobalEducation, whosefounderisaformerLongwoodhistoryprofessor, Dr.GeoffreydeLaforcade,wholedtherwoprevioustrips.
