Dr. Jordan explained that eachdaywould have its own theme:
Day I: Prehistoric NativeAmericans -The Indians
Day 2: The World ofthe Colonists
Day 3: How Water Has Molded Virginia
Day 4: Farmers- Old Ones and New Ones
Day 5: Tourism -The New Light onThe Northern Neck
Prehistoric NativeAmericans
After our lecture we took awalk to learn more about the prehistoric inhabitants ofHull Springs Farm. Over 8,000 years ago, much land on the Northern Neckwas inhabited by archaic tribes ofhunters and gatherers. Theywere followed byWoodland Indians who began co farm the land, growing corn and ocher crops. The Longwood University Archaeology Field School has conducted digs at Hull Springs Farm and foundevidenceofprehistoric artifacts including projectile points and cools in one location. Prehistoric Indians, even during the Woodland period, did not disturb the soil more than 18 inches deep.
Today, some ofthe land continues co be farmed in a cornsoybean rotation through leaseagreementswith local farmers. Traditional farming methods are practiced and the land cannot be plowed, only raked.
Our tour included an introduction to the historic Sourhern Red Oak (Quercusfalcate) next co the Big House. The tree, which daces to 1595, was nominated co "RemarkableTrees ofVirginia," by Dr. Carolyn Wells, former Longwood professor. The tree was being threatened by erosion to che adjacent shoreline, but a shoreline erosion control project
underwayshould ensure its future (see Day 3). Near the tree, we saw three depressions in che ground. Dr. Jordan explained that therewere made byhogsheads (large barrels) that would be rolled to the shoreline and onto boats.
After this in-depth tour ofHull Springs Farm, Dr. Jordan drove us to the Coan River, which was a main waterwayfor American Indians. Riverswere highways for these Native Americans. You will find che same sort ofpottery on both sides ofthe riverbecause the landwas inhabited by the same tribe. Colonists, however, usedwaterways asboundariesso it was unlikely to see the samepeople living on both sides ofthe river.
Day2,May12: TheWorldoftheColonists
I woke up at 5:30 a.m. and che sun had just started co rise. I got up, showered, and then I went outside and did Bible study. lewas perfect. We had breakfast and at 8 a.m. Dr. Jordan got everyone together and went over the agenda for today. Our focus: Colonial History in Virginia, specifically the Northern Neck.
We began with a visit to Glebe House, the oldest structure on the Northern Neck. The housewas builc for the rector of Glebe Parish and records date it as early as 1717 The house features Flemish Bond masonry that indicates the church had wealth. lewasvisited by GeorgeWashington on May 25, 1771.
Then we moved on to Nomini Hall, built around 1729 and home to the famous Carter family for I 1 generations. The remains ofthe original plantation house, destroyed in 1850 when a log rolled outofthe fireplace, overlook the Potomac River and Nomini Creek and once encompassed over 2,000 acres.Wealsovisited the nearby family cemetery. Dr. Jordan has conducted extensive research at Nomini Hall with Longwood Honors students.
Dr.Jordan explained the importanceofthe Freeand Accepted Masons in Colonial times. The Masonswere apowerfulgroup that held secret meetings in lodges that had no windows on the ground floor. Their influence on both commerce and architecture is most evident in port cities and towns. The "G" on their seal stands for "Geometry" not "God."
Backat che farm, my classmates, Collin and Billy, made chicken and salad for dinner. After dinnerwe went down to Wirch Point where Mary FarleyAmes Lee's sister lived.
