Prepared, a Greenyard division

It starts in the field: the quality of our products hinges on the quality of the fruit and vegetables harvested by our growers. Ever since our early years we have been working closely with them to achieve optimal alignment between harvest and production. This has resulted in a strong partnership in which sustainable agriculture and growing take centre stage.

Greenyard Prepared in a nutshell Greenyard Prepared is a global player in freshly processed fruit, vegetables and other ambient food products that are convenient to store and ready to eat. We offer our customers – among whom we count retailers, food service companies and the food industry – an extensive product portfolio, from classic preserved products in cans or jars to instant soups, sauces, dips and pasta dishes in a variety of packaging. Our products meet modern consumer needs for tasty, convenient, quick, but at the same time healthy food choices.

We also strive for partnerships with our customers. We share our knowledge with them and together we develop product ranges that appeal to modern customers and inspire them to live a healthier life. We tailor production and logistics optimally with our customers, which enables them and us to work cost-consciously and efficiently. It goes without saying that this is only possible with the right people in the company, and the right mindset. I am pleased that our employees are ready, every day, to make that difference. We offer them a working environment with opportunities for development, and where showing initiative is rewarded. The fact that we are now sailing under the Greenyard flag will only strengthen our division for the future. Moreover, I’m convinced that the many synergies within our group will ultimately benefit all our stakeholders, with many new opportunities and possibilities. If you feel that we might be able to be of service to your company or organisation, we will gladly discuss it with you. Our door is always open. “Thanks to preserving we can enjoy all that nature has to offer year-round.”

The very best nature has to offer, optimally preserved Preserving fruit and vegetables is an age-old tradition that has been critical to the development of healthy eating habits. Even today, cans and jars still offer the advantage of a convenient way to store fruit and vegetables. Through heat our products have increased shelf life, a pure and honest process. A broad and varied range, tailored to our customers’ needs By preserving fruit and vegetables, we can enjoy the broad palette of flavours and nutrients that nature has to offer year-round, the ideal basis for a varied diet. Greenyard Prepared boasts a broad assortment of summer vegetables (peas, carrots, green beans, ...), winter vegetables (pulses, salsifies, potatoes, red beetroot, ...) and mushrooms, as well as many fruit products (various fruit compotes, cherries, ...). We also offer a wide variety of ready-made products such as soups, sauces, dips and pasta dishes. We develop products tailored to our customers’ needs and can adapt composition, flavour and packaging to their wishes.

Bottling – an age-old tradition The bottling technique was invented by the French confectioner and inventor Nicolas Appert (1749-1841). He discovered that sterilising or ‘appertising’ through heating enabled him to preserve food almost indefinitely. Later on, the process was spread worldwide by Johann Carl Weck, who further developed and commercialised the use of glass bottles. The bottles were submerged in a hot water bath or canning kettle. When the jars cooled, negative pressure was created, which kept them tightly closed. This invention signified an important breakthrough in the evolution towards healthier eating patterns, as fruit and vegetables suddenly became available year-round.

Close to the growers We aim to source the fruit and vegetables we process as locally as possible, in the immediate neighbourhood of our production facilities, which are located in one of the most fertile regions of Europe. This way we can guarantee optimal conservation of nutrients and flavours. We work in close cooperation with growers in order to coordinate harvest and processing, and invest in sustainable agriculture.

“Our fruit, vegetables and mushrooms are processed within two hours of harvesting – the best guarantee for healthy and tasty products.

Local produce

Partnerships with growers

Our production facilities are located in one of the most fertile regions of Europe: rich in groundwater, diverse in soil structure and with a favourable climate. In short: the perfect soil for healthy and nutritious produce. Most of the fruit, vegetables and mushrooms we process are grown within a 100 km radius of our production facilities, which means we can process them within a few hours of harvesting. As well as guaranteeing optimally conserved flavours and nutrients, this also limits the ecological impact of transportation and logistics.

We work in close cooperation with the growers of the fruit, vegetables and mushrooms that we process. We optimally coordinate harvest and production so as to process our produce as freshly as possible. Our agricultural engineers help the fruit and vegetable growers to select the best seeds as well as the best times for sowing and harvesting. We invest in programmes for innovative agricultural methods and technology that help growers operate more sustainably. Thanks to fair market prices, and stable long-term contracts, they are able to build up a healthy business for themselves and their families. An approach that is kind to people and the planet.

Tailor-made innovation Although modern consumers often have little time to cook, that doesn’t mean they want to compromise on health or taste. On the contrary: every meal is important, and the perfect opportunity to enjoy healthy and tasty food. The kitchen: our innovation centre Our cooks and food technologists are constantly on the look-out for new trends. Every day they are finding new ways to surprise consumers: improving existing recipes, coming up with new combinations and experimenting with exotic flavours. They continue to refine and taste until it’s just right.

“Our cooks and food technologists develop new recipes every day in response to market trends.”

HEALTHY Our products aim to contribute to a healthy and balanced diet. Every day we explore new ways to further improve our product range with regard to sugar, salt and fat content. The latest technologies are used to ensure optimal nutrient conservation. We also respond to the trend for healthier food: our organic product range is constantly expanded and our mushrooms and pulses provide perfect alternatives to meat products.

CONVENIENT Modern consumers are spending increasingly less time in the kitchen. With our broad range of easy-to-prepare products, we encourage daily consumption of fruit and vegetables and we contribute to a healthy and varied diet, without the need to spend too much time on preparation. Innovative packaging and adapted portions make life even easier. Always available and ready for consumption.

8/

TASTY Every meal counts. Even those of us who have little time to cook want to enjoy tasty food. We offer consumers a wide range of fruit and vegetables and enable them to try new flavours from around the world. Tasty convenience.

Tapping into new markets together

Exactly how our customers want it

Greenyard Prepared is more than just a supplier. We don’t just sell products; we also use our expertise and know-how to create products that respond to new trends and consumers’ needs, thereby enabling our customers to distinguish themselves in the market. New flavours and varieties, innovative packaging, original promotions – in cooperation with buyers, marketers and category managers, we examine how to best optimise their product range and how to further develop their assortment category. We also work in close cooperation with our customers in the food service and food industry in order to make sure that our products – and their packaging – are ideally suited to their needs.

Quality throughout the chain Quality products start with highquality raw materials – fruit and vegetables straight from the field, harvested at exactly the right time. Our quality assurance systems ensure that it is this same quality that ultimately reaches consumers’ forks. In accordance with the most stringent standards Greenyard Prepared works according to the most stringent international quality standards, ensuring that the focus on quality is embedded in our systems. We don’t take any risks when it comes to food safety either. We combine advanced control systems and inspection equipment with visual inspection so that quality is assured throughout the entire production process. We are also committed to maximum traceability, from the field to the customer.

Our doors are always open Anyone is welcome to come and experience our quality with their own eyes – not only in our production locations but also in the field or in our kitchens. We receive external auditors with great regularity – not only from independent auditing bodies but also from our customers. We welcome these visits as they keep us on our toes in our daily focus on quality.

“The pursuit of quality is embedded in our daily operations.”

“Sustainable use of raw materials is part of our DNA.”

14 /

Sustainability is long-lasting Sustainable use of raw materials is part of our DNA. Our advanced preserving techniques enable us to store fruit and vegetables for longer, which reduces waste. We like to apply this philosophy in everything we do, while developing our activities with the utmost respect for people and nature. Preventing food waste

People and community

Because food waste is a global problem, as a manu facturer of food we see it as our duty to make sustainable use of nature’s produce. Our advanced preserving techniques enable us to store fruit and vegetables for longer, which reduces waste. Thanks to our broad product range, we are also able to process various qualities, which enables us to minimise residuals and to process as many vegetables, mushrooms and fruit as possible. This is how we prevent food waste.

We offer employment to the most divers profiles: from production employees to nutrition specialists, from engineers to drivers. Greenyard Prepared is also committed to social economy: our social workplace in Bree employs fifty people who enthusiastically assume a number of specialised tasks. We encourage our employees to eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly. We also take our societal role to heart by working on good relations with our neighbours and participating in a variety of sports and cultural events.

Reducing consumption, maximising re-use

Education

We systematically limit our consumption of energy and water and strive for optimal re-use, whether it’s heat generated through processing or mushroom blanching water. Our Bree (B) facility has its own water purification installation with a capacity of water consumption for 150,000 resident-equiva lents. We closely involve our employees in all our efforts: our eco-teams are always on the look-out for potential improvements with regard to energy and waste. Finally, a large proportion of our packaging is made of tin or glass, both perfectly and almost indefinitely recyclable.

Greenyard Prepared cooperates with various education institutes and establishments. We offer internships to young people and students and organise company visits for schools as part of theme days on the environment, nutrition or agriculture. We also cooperate with colleges of higher education, universities and centres of competence in order to research new ways to achieve sustainability by making use of the latest insights and technologies.
