Light Fixture Design
The Float wall sconce is a sophisticated take on the childhood memory of celebratory events. It is meant to represent the bunches of balloons that create excitement.
DESIGN CHALLENGE
To design a lighting fixture that represents a moment in life that holds a significant meaning to us that calls for special attention, such as a celebration. The light source must be powered by electricity. There is no restriction on lamp type, wattage, or voltage. The objective is to design an aesthetically pleasing and functional luminaire.
CONCEPT: BALLOON
The focus for this design was the decorations used for a celebration, so a decorative light fixture was created. A primary decoration at a celebration is balloons and they can come in many different shapes, sizes, colors, and quantities. Balloons are most whimsical when they are in large groups; this is where the inspirations for the Float wall sconce came from. The light fixture is an abstract version of a balloon bunch being viewed as if you were floating above the balloons.
DESIGN SOLUTION
The Float wall sconce is unlike any other and can be used in a space that needs some added interest or as a wayfinding element in an egress hallway. It is made up of layered circular metal sheets with a center light source that peaks through the spacing of the metal sheets.
SKETCHES
LIGHT FIXTURE OFF There are four layers of circular metal sheets that are evenly spaced apart and attached to each other with metal bolts and washers. Because the layers are separated from each other with light pouring through, it gives the affect that the circles are floating on top of one another.

DESIGN CHALLENGE
To develop a strong concept and turn this concept into a textile design that is marketable, and use color theory to create a palette and design that has the desired effect on the customer.
CONCEPT: MARTHA GRAHAM TECHNIQUE
The Graham Technique is a modern dance style that was created by the American dancer and choreographer Martha Graham. This specific technique is the foundation of modern dance and has been taught around the world. This technique was built on opposition, contraction, release and spiraling the body around the spine. When watching someone perform the Graham Technique, one will witness its unique qualities that can be described as powerful and irregular.
DESIGN SOLUTION
This textile embodies the concept through abstracted elements of contraction, opposition, release, and spiral.
SKETCHES
GRAHAM: NIGHT GREY
GRAHAM: LAMENTATION BLUE Inspired by the Martha Graham piece, Night Journey, that premiered in 1947. The set for this piece were tones of grey and the meaning behind this piece consisted of suicidal thoughts, a mood of impending doom, and was invested in portraying both.
GRAHAM: SPRING YELLOW
Inspired by the Martha Graham piece, Lamentation, that premiered in 1930. This was a dance of sorrow, struggle, despair, and isolation.
GRAHAM: FRONTIER PINK Inspired by the Martha Graham piece, Appalachian Spring, that premiered in 1944. This piece tells a story of a spring celebration after a new home was built for newlyweds. This piece is known to be joyous and light.
Inspired by the Martha Graham piece, Frontier, that premiered in 1935. The costumes consisted of a long pale pink jumper with a long-sleeved white blouse, these costume colors were selected to suggest optimism and freshness.
