The Department for Infrastructure orders 52 new lifts from Maha to be installed in all of NI’s MOT test centres.

In the Driver’s Seat: In this edition we talk to Bob Wiffen, Operations Director for Euro Car Parts Team PR Reilly.

Apprentices proved they were on the right road at SERC’s Intercampus Heavy Vehicle Competition which took place at the College’s Lisburn Campus recently.

COMMENT The closure of Northern Ireland’s MOT test centres at the start of the year came like a bolt out of the blue to both franchise and independent workshops. The Department of Infrastructure issued 4 month extensions to vehicles over 4 years old and has ordered 52 new Maha lifts to be fitted at all of Northern Ireland’s MOT test centres. These new lifts will be fitted between April and mid July and after that the centres will be working flat out to catch up on the tens of thousands of delayed MOT test. It will be a very busy summer for the aftermarket preparing all those vehicles for testing… -Pat Burns, Editor

NEWS MINISTER FOR INFRASTRUCTURE ORDERS 52 NEW MAHA LIFTS FOR NI MOT CENTRES

F

ollowing the discovery of faulty lifts in a number of Northern Ireland’s MOT centres in January, Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon recently announced the purchase of 52 new MAHA car lifts for all MOT centres. The new MAHA lifts will be installed between April and mid July and are part of a number of measures the Minister has taken to resolve the MOT situation.

advice on the next steps. “I can now confirm that the first review, conducted by independent engineers, has concluded. The independent expert assessment on the condition of the existing lifts has recommended that all lifts exhibiting signs of fatigue are considered to be beyond their possible product life expectancy and should be replaced not repaired.

Announcing the purchase of the new lifts, the Minister commented: “The current disruption to vehicle testing services at MOT centres from the 21st January because of difficulties with the operation of the lifts is unacceptable. My priority has and remains the safety of DVA staff and customers. “I have acted quickly to ensure all drivers could remain on the road. This included the immediate issuing of Temporary Exemption Certificates, extended opening hours at MOT centres and the commissioning of two independent reviews to provide me with expert

This assessment ruled out the possibility of short term repairs due to the location of the fault and whilst a more complete replacement of the key parts, including the scissor legs, could be done this would have to be completed off site and would take as long as a full lift replacement. This would also create a risk that other parts of the repaired lifts may fail after reinstallation given the age of the equipment, which may lead to further disruption. “In considering the possibility of a lift replacement programme, Construction & Procurement

4- GARAGETRADER

Delivery (CPD) in the Department of Finance provided me with independent advice on the purchase of the lifts. The advice from CPD was that the quickest way to install new lifts was to use the existing contract. To use another supplier would significantly delay the installation of new lifts. “I have decided to place an order with MAHA for 52 lifts through an accelerated production programme. New lifts will begin to be installed from late April, with all lifts to be in place by mid-July. The lifts will cost £1.8m and will be financed from DVA reserves which have been put aside for that purpose. “I am determined that lessons must be learnt and this must not happen again. Recommendations from all the findings from the various independent reports will be implemented. It is clear that an inadequate inspection regime and metal fatigue has led to this situation. Going forward measures will be put

in place to ensure this issue can never arise again. This includes the introduction of an improved equipment replacement cycle, a review of the contract management regime to be deployed by DVA with MAHA and improvements will be made to the maintenance and inspection regime and reporting by MAHA. Additional regular independent robust inspections and assurances will be arranged by DVA, adding an additional layer of protection. Until all the lifts are replaced and fully operational, I will ensure that all vehicles continue to be provided with the necessary cover to allow them to remain on the road; either through the issuing of Temporary Exemption Certificates (TEC) or a priority appointment with the DVA for four year old vehicles, dealerships and taxis. Road safety is a priority for me and I want to emphasise the responsibility of road users to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy at all times, regardless of the current situation.

“EXTRA” AS A NOTE OF SPECIAL PROPERTIES

T

he product line of special belts is being constantly expanded to meet the requirements of modern vehicles. Extremely demanding belt drives such as start-stop systems with starter generators are increasingly being used in modern vehicles. These usually require highly specialized belts that are precisely matched to the respective drive. Corresponding V-ribbed belts with special technical properties are identified by Continental with the note “EXTRA”. This portfolio of special belts is being constantly expanded and customized to meet the requirements of modern vehicles.

The special designation prevents serious confusion. If conventional V-ribbed belts are used in spite of special requirements, various difficulties can arise, such as increased belt wear, high noise emissions or, in extreme cases, the failure of the belt. The belts must, therefore, always be application specific when installed. However, the term “EXTRA” alone does not say anything about the specific properties—only that the belt has special technical features such as an aramid tension member or special fabric coatings. In order to always install the correct belt, customers should first check the exact vehicle assignment of the belt.

Gareth Matchett now offers a mobile ADAS system recalibration service using a Hella Gutmann CSC calibration system. As Advanced Driver Assist Systems (ADAS) become more prevalent in the vehicle car parc, it is vital that all independent workshops have someone properly trained to handle working on these systems. Hella Gutmann Solutions (HGS)

has been the market leader in this area for many years, ensuring technicians are able to correctly recalibrate the cameras/radars in vehicles and educating them about the complex technologies involved. Gareth has been trained in the use of the Hella Gutmann equipment. Gareth wasn’t an out and out petrolhead growing up, his flair was more communication and retail. His very first job was collecting glasses in a bar in his hometown of Banbridge and that taught him the importance of communicating with customers and getting to know them and establish a relationship with them. This set Gareth up for a career in management with various big named

ADAS DRIVER SOLUTIONS GT retailers which included Halfords and he progressed through a number of stores working first in Newtownabbey, then Dundalk and Drogheda. After Halfords, he moved to Euro Car Parts and stayed with the company for six years, managing all the different branches from Boucher Road Belfast, to Londonderry and Portadown. After seeing the Hella Gutmann ADAS CSC calibration system while working for Euro Car Parts he spotted a gap in the market as all new cars have this driver aid system fitted and any vehicle in a fairly small accident or needing a windscreen replaced will need the ADAS system recalibrated. Only currently franchise dealers have this system installed so Gareth now offers both a mobile service and a workshop facility in Lisburn. Currently quite a number of leading BSI 10125 bodyshops around the

country are already using Gareth’s services. Gareth has also acquired licences for some VM software such as VW Group’s ODIS, Mercedes Xentry and BMW’s ISTA system allowing Gareth to programme new control modules saving that extra trip and added time to a franchise dealer. Gareth can work on vast coverage of ADAS systems, brands including VAG group, Mercedes, BMW plus many more. “Usually my work is the very last part of repairing a damaged car and I offer where possible a same day service offering a much quicker key to key time,” says Gareth. Away from cars, Gareth is married with one daughter and hobbies include Ju Jitsu martial arts and DJing. Gareth can be contacted via his website www. ADASDriverSolutions.com

DAYCO DAYCO INTRODUCES OE QUALITY THERMOSTATS

D

ayco, a leading engine products and drive systems supplier for the automotive, industrial and aftermarket industries, has introduced thermostats into its growing portfolio. In keeping with its ongoing commitment to quality, the range is naturally designed and manufactured to meet the most stringent original equipment (OE) specifications. To aid their identification and ensure they align with the correct application references, Dayco thermostats carry the prefix DT followed by a four figure part number. However, they also feature a final letter – F, H or V – which refer to the thermostat’s type: flange, housing or valve. The role of the thermostat is to effectively control the flow of coolant around the cooling system and allow the engine to reach its optimum working temperature as quickly as possible. Dayco thermostats are designed to efficiently accomplish this objective for all engine types, while also satisfying three key requirements: reduced fuel consumption, reduced emissions and reduced wear and tear Overview Modern cooling systems play a crucial part in the drive towards reducing fuel consumption. The demands for increased efficiency together with factors such as higher flow rates, turbocharger technology, autonomous heating and air conditioning have transformed the traditional process of engine cooling into complex cooling systems. Future emissions regulations will require engines to operate at 10% higher temperatures in order to ensure optimal fuel combustion. This will require more powerful cooling systems in order for the vehicle to run efficiently for its entire lifespan. Efficient thermal management is one of the most important factors in the fight to combat wear and tear within the engine. Without effective temperature control, despite the presence of oil, damage

and increased wear to the engine’s internal components would be unavoidable. Dayco’s extensive technological know-how and drive to ensure its products deliver to the highest levels of performance means that a combination of precision couplings and quality materials has enabled the company to produce thermostats that are the equal of OE products in their quality, safety, efficiency and durability. Why choose Dayco thermostats? • Dayco provides a complete range of thermostat components - from single thermostatic valves and thermostats with flanges to complete housings with sensors • Products equivalent to OE quality and performance • More than 200 thermostat codes • All components are tested and verified during production to guarantee the highest quality • Wide and continually expanding range with wide coverage of the circulating vehicle parc • New packaging that enhances the brand identity and product integrity • On-line and traditional paper catalogues for quick and secure identification of the correct product for the application • World leader in automotive technology for over 110 years • OE Supplier of the world’s leading brands on all continents Product detail Traditional thermostats encompass: a moving rod, main plate and spring, as well as a secondary spring, bracket, bell and bulb. • The main plate is made of seamless steel for greater reliability and durability • Leading valve technology prevents thermal shocks to protect the entire cooling system • The bulb, or sensing element, is made of the most advanced wax-copper mixtures, to ensure extremely accurate temperature activation Housing thermostats however are an integrated part that combines the thermostat and housing. • Dayco housing thermostats are made of polyamide resins

check out the website: www.garagetrader.info

or aluminium, of equivalent quality to the OE products, guaranteeing excellent heat, mechanical and water resistance • The polyamide housing is also individually checked during production to verify perfect sealing and total absence of leaks. In addition, the geometric and dimensional precision inherent in the design, ensures flawless coupling with the hydraulics and associated cooling system components • The integrated electronic sensors provide highly accurate coolant temperature measurements with response times equal to the OE products • The valves with electronic sensitive elements within map controlled thermostats, which are directly operated by the vehicle’s ECU, allow for ‘smart’ management of the thermostat in order to reduce fuel consumption, emissions and improving engine performance

BRAKE JUDDER – WHAT CAUSES IT?

E

very motorist needs to have confidence in their vehicles braking system. So, when you put your foot on the pedal, the last thing you want is to hear excessive squealing or to feel unexpected vibration or judder. When vibration occurs, many people jump to the conclusion that the disc is warped and needs replacing. So, what is brake judder, and how can it be avoided? It can be divided into two types. 1. Hot brake Judder and 2. Cold brake Judder. Hot Brake Judder Whenever you bring two surfaces into contact and at least one of them is moving at high speed, the result will be friction. This friction then creates heat which is transmitted to other parts of a car’s braking system.

Brake discs are usually made of cast iron and when this material gets hot it naturally expands and distorts and when cool, returns to its original shape. This natural reaction to heat is consistent and brake discs are designed to handle this and can operate in temperatures up to around 500°C. If the brake discs exceed the normal operating temperature “Hot” Brake Judder can, sometimes be the consequence. Figures 1 & 2 show an exaggerated view of the effects of temperature on a brake disc. Figure 2a shows a disc that has a number of indicators of disc thermal distortion and excessive heat, first the oxidisation (orange colouring), secondly the blue tint to the braking surface, third the dark spots on the disc surface (high spots) and finally the large radial crack where excessive heat has caused permanent damage. All these factors are indicative

32- GARAGETRADER

of distortion caused by excessive temperature.

But what causes excessive heat? The most common cause is abuse. Brakes are designed to withstand high temperatures, and cool down quickly, if you hit them hard several times in quick succession however, this can cause a phenomenon known as ‘brake fade’, which is when the brakes get so hot the fail to work effectively. Repeated heavy use of your front brakes might also cause the discs to turn blue. Once these marks appear it means the disc has been permanently damaged and will need to be replaced. Another reason could be, the brake caliper could cease to function properly causing the brake pad to remain in contact with the disc even when not braking. Heat will steadily increase and can eventually get so hot the brake disc may crack if rapidly cooled.

Fig 1

Fig 2

Cold brake judder 1. Incorrect Fitting - Cold brake judder is almost always a direct result of a fitting problem between brake disc and hub. Brake discs and hubs are manufactured to strict tolerances, therefore any rust or other debris that can cause fitting issues as illustrated in figure, needs to be removed prior to installation.

Fig 2a

Fig 3

If the disc is installed with too high levels of radial run out the consequence is very light continuous contact between the pad and disc at diametrically opposite points on the disc face in the “brakes off” condition (see fig 4). With increasing mileage this results in a progressively larger localised variation in the thickness of the disc (DTV – Disc Thickness Variation) which when the brakes are applied causes a pulsation to

Fig 4 be felt through the brake pedal and steering wheel. To ensure this does not occur, follow these steps:

1. Clean the hub of rust or debris. 2. Then check the hub for run-out

check out the website: www.garagetrader.info

Juratek

using a dial gauge. 3. Install the new disc and then check using a dial gauge (see fig 5) mounted close to the outer radius of the disc; the installed value of radial run out should not be greater than 100 microns, and ideally not more than 70 microns. 2. Poor Manufacturing - Poorly manufactured brake discs can also cause brake judder. This will be detected immediately on fitting

but most reputable brake disc manufacturers like Juratek, are now manufacturing to the strict regulations imposed by UN ECE R90:02, which in part covers the way a disc is manufactured, and the composition of the material used. At Juratek we pride ourselves on the high quality products we supply and our discs are manufactured to the strict geometric tolerances imposed by this regulation. Our discs are manufactured exactly

Fig 5

as the OE disc including the vent design, which is specifically designed to maximise the airflow with a vehicle braking system. In addition, we coat the nonbraking surfaces of ALL our discs with corrosion resistant paint but the reason we do not coat the braking surface is because this acts as a lubricant between the brake disc and pad and this can impair braking performance.

GT

Good braking systems need more than a good quality brake disc to function and our brake pad range is not only produced to UN ECE R90:02 standard but is also tested to AK Master which is a standard developed by the OEM side of our industry to type approve brake friction material. It goes beyond the tests conducted as part of UN ECE R90:02 and includes vigorous wear and noise tests. The addition of our unique “initial Performance Strip which is a strip of green material applied to the surface of the front pads, aids in the initial bedding in stage. In addition, many of our pads contain the fitting kits, which often include bolts, caliper clips and wear leads. As these components corrode or wear over time, they can cause the pads to become loose in the caliper. So, it is essential to change these at the same time. So, in summary, the issue of brake judder, which is often blamed on a warped disc, is almost never a fault of the product and in most cases is caused by either excessive heat or poor preparation and fitting.

REPXPERT ALISTAIR MASON ON CLUTCH AND TRANSMISSION SYSTEMS

E

ngines are changing, so the clutch and transmission system is being adapted too.

Commenting on current clutch trends, Alistair said: “Manual gearbox cars are still very popular, so there is still a high demand for clutch repairs and replacements. The number of vehicles using self-adjusting clutches continues to increase, as they give the benefits of a lighter clutch operation with a consistent bite point and clamp load. “We are now seeing the use of hydro-electric clutches in semiautomatic transmissions, where an electrical actuator controls hydraulic pressure to the concentric slave cylinder to operate the clutch. A position sensor is fitted to the slave cylinder to give feedback on the clutch position. “The future is in electricallycontrolled clutches, which will also help reduce vehicle emissions, allowing the car to coast wherever possible. “Double clutch systems are also now being used by most vehicle manufacturers (VMs). The main advantage is the gearchange speed – which can be as quick as 0.08

seconds! Because of this, when accelerating, drivers tend to hold the throttle in one position until the desired speed is reached, and then they lift slightly to maintain that speed. As a result, it is lot easier for the vehicle to run at Lambda 1 to aid emissions control and, because the gearbox is controlled by an ECU, it is always in the correct gear. The dry double clutch system is the most efficient as there is no drag on the clutch.”

Importance of clutch and transmission maintenance “Generally, the only maintenance required on the transmission system is to change the oil on automatic, wet double clutch and constantly variable gearboxes. This is because the oil becomes contaminated as the clutch wears, losing its lubricating properties as it deteriorates, causing premature wear on associated components, leading to expensive repair bills. “Another area to look at, to ensure gearboxes are maintained properly, is the control unit software. VMs

are constantly modifying software to optimise systems and prevent potential problems.” Advice for workshops when sourcing parts “My first piece of advice in this area would be to fit quality parts from a known manufacturer, not simply choose on price. It is the workshop’s reputation at the end of the day, and if rectification work is required due to faulty parts, who’s going to pay? There’s also going to be an unhappy customer. “I’d also recommend not ‘mixing and matching’ parts during a clutch replacement – use all components from just one brand, as they will be optimised to work together. If the flywheel is also being replaced, again use the same brand. We have seen many problems arising from mixing different branded components. “I would also use a reputable and trusted supplier; if there are any problems they can then be quickly and easily resolved and advice given if required. Sometimes, workshops need support, and we also have to remember there is a vehicle owner paying for the work at the end of the day.”

check out the website: www.garagetrader.info

Tips and tricks “Spend 10 minutes researching the job; special processes are becoming more common, mistakes can be costly. Software updates can resolve a lot of faults, so these are always worth checking before removing major components. “Use the correct tools; tolerances are a lot finer these days and components are more sensitive. The tool will pay for itself if the job has to be done again. “Technical bulletins are becoming more widely available on manufacturers’ websites, so it is always worth checking if there is one for your job, as this could save a lot of time and effort.” Information on Schaeffler products, fitting instructions, labour times and much more can be found on the REPXPERT garage portal – www. repxpert.co.uk – and also in the REPXPERT app, or by calling the Schaeffler REPXPERT hotline on (+44) 1432 264264. COMLINE

COMLINE ADDS BRAKE CALIPERS TO AWARD-WINNING FRICTION PORTFOLIO

A

ftermarket experts, Comline, have further bolstered their awardwinning friction portfolio by adding an all-new range of high-quality calipers to their lineup. Complementing the brand’s existing braking offer, which includes a stellar range of R-90 approved pads and fully coated discs, the newly launched category serves all popular European, Japanese, and Korean vehicles. Instock and available for immediate delivery, Comline’s latest product category comes complete with a comprehensive 2-year (40,000-mile / 65,000 km) warranty as standard.

crafted to TS1649 standards in world-class, ISO compliant manufacturing facilities. Leaving nothing to chance, quality is assured thanks to extensive control procedures, which test each component in a variety of environments against stringent criteria. Examples include but are not limited to the following tests: Pressure Performance Monitoring: Here the calliper is observed while operating at both low and highpressure settings. Starting with the lower threshold, the caliper operates at 0.4MPA and over a set period the pressure level is increased to 7MPA. Providing there is no loss of pressure during this tolerance test the caliper passes this vital check.

• Aftermarket experts, Comline, add calipers to their award-winning friction portfolio. • All-new range complements the brand’s existing braking offer, which includes R-90 approved pads, and fully coated discs.

Corrosion Resistance Analysis: For a caliper to deliver optimum performance, it must be free from rust and corrosion. To ensure all Comline calipers are resistant to degradation every part undergoes an accelerated salt spray test. The specialist apparatus used in the salt spray test consists of a sealed chamber where a saltwater solution is atomised through spray nozzles using pressurised air. This produces a corrosive environment of dense salt-water fog in the chamber. This controlled environment recreates severe weather conditions and tests the anti-corrosive properties of the caliper to its limits. For a Comline caliper to be approved for sale, the part needs to withstand this extreme testing without any signs of degradation for a continuous period of 72 hours.

• Serving all popular European, Japanese, and Korean vehicles, Comline’s caliper range delivers consistent, reliable quality and reaffirms the brand’s position as ‘experts in braking’. “Comline has developed a strong reputation for braking and a proven track record for supplying parts that tick the box for both quality and genuine value for money,” said Peter Allen, Comline’s Product Manager - Braking. “Until now this has focused exclusively on our all makes range of pads and coated discs but, following months of meticulous planning and market research, we are excited to be broadening this focus to include brake calipers. Like their stablemates, this product range will carry the same Comline promise of delivering guaranteed performance, absolute reliability, and inherent value for money. “It’s a great way to kick off the new decade, and we are confident that Comline calipers will be well received by our customers around the globe.”

Versatile in application, Comline’s caliper line-up comprises all new units (zero remanufacturing / surcharge requirements) covering front and rear variants for an extensive list of applications. Standard cast iron references, all

have been invaluable. In 2019, we worked with 17 schools across Northern Ireland – giving talks about apprenticeships or taking part in careers fairs - this year, we’ve seen the number of schools working with us increase by 9 to 26 in total! We are also encouraged to see traditional Grammar Schools inviting us to their Careers Fairs: recognising that apprenticeships are a viable option for those seeking

a more work-based path in their future. Thanks to our school partnerships and marketing campaigns on Facebook (@riverparktrainingni), our interviews are in full swing: since the 1st January, we’ve had 45 applications to the various courses we offer (Vehicle Accident Repair, Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair, and Vehicle Parts) and have, so far, interviewed 27 of them. We’re excited to see the

number of young people who are showing the signs of being a good apprentice: a good work ethic, practical ability, and enthusiasm. Ex-Apprentice Comes Back To Riverpark In February, we had our exapprentice, Jonathan Lloyd, return to Riverpark to give some of our 2019 Refinishers a talk on PPE & giving a demo of polishing techniques using the latest 3M products. Jonathan started his Vehicle Refinishing apprenticeship in 2003 and excelled: he won Bodyshop Magazine’s Young Painter of the Year in 2005 AND 2006; a World Skills Bronze Medal (Car Painting) in Japan in 2007; Bodyshop Magazine’s Painter of the Year in 2011; and became the World Skills Car Painting Training Manager in 2013. #NIAW2020 This year saw the inaugural Northern Ireland Apprenticeship Week 2020 (3rd February to 7th February): a week where potential employers and apprentices could take part in a host of events and activities across Northern Ireland with the aim of understanding the benefits of taking up an apprenticeship. At Riverpark Training, we held a quiz on Facebook and encouraged our 1.2K followers to answers a series of questions during the week with the winner getting a £100 voucher to spend at Halfords. Well done to Sean O’Neill (Wrights Carryduff) for answering all 4 questions correctly!

TTS WHY EMPLOYING AN APPRENTICE COULD BE JUST RIGHT FOR YOUR BUSINESS

Y

our business, and especially your workshop, needs enthusiastic capable Technicians - not easy to find these days, but Transport Training Services believes it has the answer. The motor and transport industry training centre can help employers to recruit and train enthusiastic young apprentices.

TTS receives applications from a variety of young people looking to start a career in the motor industry, and at this time of year, around half of applicants are getting ready for GCSEs or A-Levels and have already made up their mind to leave school and enter the world of work. Other applicants have already left school and have some experience in routine jobs, but are keen to begin a new challenge in an industry they’ve always had a keen interest in and would love the chance to become a skilled technician or advisor. At any given time, TTS has over 200 employed apprentices in training and the organisation partners with around 60 employers to provide a 3-year programme for technicians and a 2 year programme for Parts and Service

Advisors. The TTS block delivery training system is an effective way of strengthening workshop teams with training that makes apprentices useful and productive quickly, and at the end of the apprenticeship be a qualified and skilled member of the team. TTS for one-week blocks every eight weeks where they receive a blend of classroom theory and practical workshop tasks, working towards IMI Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications. September 2020 will likely see changes in the government-funded vocational programmes meaning that 16-18 year-old trainees will no longer be available for long-term unpaid ‘work experience’ within businesses. That’s another good reason to consider investing in your future by actually employing a capable young person who’s keen to learn and make a good addition to your team as an apprentice. Here’s the experience of Samuel Harron, from Bangor, a 1st year apprentice at Belfast Audi: “I left school in June 2019 after completing A-levels, but I didn’t particularly want to go on to higher education. I had been racing gokarts since I was 8 and was always interested in cars. I applied for TTS, and after passing their preentry aptitude test, Robert Deignan signposted me towards vacancies in the Agnew Group. I’m now more than half way through my 1st year as an apprentice technician in Belfast Audi and I’m loving every minute of it.” Samuel’s workshop supervisor, Jim Madden, is also delighted with Samuel’s impact in the business: “Samuel has excelled in his first few months. His passion for cars has driven him to put in the effort required to perform at the highest level. In this time he has studied with TTS and online with Audi UK which has given him an understanding of what is required to be successful in his apprenticeship.

under close supervision, can now complete service work and has carried out some repairs. With further training and support from ourselves and TTS he will continue to progress into diagnosing and repair in the future. We look forward to working closely with TTS in the coming years and helping to coach and mentor Samuel to achieve his potential and reach the highest levels within the workshop at Belfast Audi.” Heavy Vehicle applicant, Jay Cardwell, from Belfast is getting ready for GCSEs at Belfast Boys Model school: “I applied to TTS after they attended a Careers Fair in my school. I recently passed the TTS aptitude tests, they were challenging and made me realise that I need to work hard at school to achieve GCSE passes in English and Maths. Robert at TTS has helped me with my CV and has arranged an interview for an apprenticeship in a franchised truck dealer in Mallusk”. There just might be an ideal Apprentice candidate for your business so please call with Robert, have a look at our Centre at Nutts Corner and check out the possibilities. TS recently organised and hosted Ford specialist training at its training centre in Nutts Corner. The five-day programme was primarily aimed at current TTS apprentices as well as recently qualified apprentices and technicians in the trade working with the Ford brand. Modules covered included Basic Electrics and Electronics; Steering, Suspension and Brakes; and Service Quality.

TTS would like to thank specialist Ford trainer Colin Crick who expertly delivered the programme and at the same time ensured that TTS trainer John Walsh is now equipped to deliver Ford modules at TTS in the future. Participation in the course awards credits on the FordLearn system and therefore provides a costeffective solution to accreditation for apprentices and technicians.

Through this studying and working alongside his mentor Ben McKeating, he has used our systems and processes of work including the workshop manual and state of the art workshop diagnostic equipment. With this knowledge Samuel,

BOB WIFFEN, OPERATIONS DIRECTOR, EURO CAR PARTS TEAM P R REILLY. Tell us about your career so far? I started out at Woolworths before moving to a DIY company called Do It All, and then a few years later, a role opened up for me at Halfords. I progressed to Divisional Director level and was responsible for the business’s retail and garage network in my division. It was at Halfords that I met Andy Hamilton, who has since become CEO of Euro Car Parts (ECP), and who I still work with to this day. Andy joined ECP three years before I did, and I joined him in 2013. After three years as a Regional Manager, I moved into a European role alongside Andy, looking after market research, branding, marketing and garage concepts, and working on the launch of AutoEducation – our market-leading training solution for independent garages. Together with Andy and another colleague called Lee Chapman, I travelled all over Europe, learning from best practice, helping the international business become more aligned and making some great friends along the way. Understanding the cultural nuances in different markets was invaluable preparation for my move to ECP Team P R Reilly last year.

service strengths. My background is in mainstream retail, but unlike working on the high street, we don’t just wait for customers to come to us. We are proactive and build meaningful relationships with customers, encouraging loyalty by offering services that are the right fit for them, and that support the development and sustainability of their individual businesses.

Did you plan to get involved in this industry?

What was your biggest disappointment?

The short answer is no because I was approached for the role, but given my time again, I wouldn’t change a thing! There’s so much to learn in this fast-changing industry and it’s personal and professional development – for myself and my people – that keeps me motivated. I used to go on a training course one Saturday every month with our Business Development Managers (which I think surprised them a bit!), as I wanted to improve my parts and technical knowledge quickly, so I could support my Branch Manager team as effectively as possible.

I was really disappointed when Woolworths closed – even though I’d left the business in 1984, I still had friends there, and it was where I started out. It’s sad to see high street names struggling to change with the times – I’ll always look back fondly on my time at Woolworths and I’m so grateful for everything I learnt there.

I also think working in the aftermarket plays to my customer 46- GARAGETRADER

Bob Wiffen, Operations Director

What was the best piece of advice you ever received? An old manager once told me, ‘always trust your intuition’. It can be difficult to speak up in a meeting – especially if you can’t put your finger on why you think something’s not right – but it’s

better to buy some time and say ‘let’s go away and have a think about this’, than to rush into making the wrong decision.

I moved to ECP Team P R Reilly, we went out to see all of our branch teams across Ireland to find out what kept them awake at night.

Whom do you most admire? Football legend Sir Bobby Robson, for his dignity, honesty and strength of character.

All of them told us they needed more Korean and Japanese parts, so we listened to them and adapted the range to suit the profile of the Irish car parc.

What is the most difficult aspect of your job?

You’ve won the lottery. What car would you rush out and buy?

Getting the balance right between ‘push’ and ‘pull’. Euro Car Parts was historically a highlyfocussed sales organisation, but the past few years have seen a mindset shift towards involving our customers and employees in what we’re trying to achieve. We want to be a supportive partner for independent garages, so it’s important to understand their points of view – which is the right way to do business, both commercially and culturally.

I wouldn’t buy a car… I’d get a VW iBuzz – the electric version of the iconic campervan. I’d travel around Europe in it with my wife. If you don’t know what I’m talking about – Google it, it’s beautiful!

What is your most effective or personal asset? I take a genuine interest in the people I work with, which helps me build meaningful, effective relationships with them. Soon after

How do you relax? I love fishing and reading – and I’m a lifelong Newcastle United fan. Tell us something surprising about yourself… As a Geordie who works in the automotive industry, people probably wouldn’t expect me to enjoy opera and poetry! I don’t talk about it much, but I especially love the work of Robert Frost and Wilfred Owen.
