There is something magical about this area.

Perhaps it’s the long twisting roads throughout Van Buren and Cleburne

counties or the lush topography & beautiful bodies of water, or the rock

formations that tell a story with the petroglyphs and faces, or the 3 million plus year old sandstone bridge. Or, maybe it’s that unique view you’re

rewarded with after climbing to the top of Sugar Loaf Mountain, with a sky

so close and bold, it’s as if you could reach out, touch it and swirl it around a bit. Or, how about standing at the overlook at Bridal Veil Falls, a couple

just got engaged there last weekend, right in front of me. Or, stand on the banks of the River in Woodruff County, surrounded by historical buildings

while you watch a child catch their first fish. Or, the famous Little Red River, and let’s not forget the White River in White County, both are where great fisherman are born.

It’s all of this and more. So much more it would be impossible to tell

you about it within this space. And, even if I did tell you, it wouldn’t be the same. You’ve got to experience what it feels like. will thrill to learn that Greers Ferry Lake has features beneath the

water’s surface! In 1962, the Greers Ferry Dam and Lake, authorized in

the Flood Control Act of 1938, came into

being. Farmers moved their production to

the higher ground and entire communities, such as Higden, began life anew. Grab a

map and let your fingers trace the paths of

submerged roads and railroads. You’ll also see where cemeteries, levees and other

structures are located - monuments to life before the lake was born. Adventurous

scuba divers may decide to plunge the depths to find submerged treasures, foundations and even a gas station!

Divers will also enjoy the stunning rock formations that hide below the water.

If staying above water is more your

style, try a canoe or kayak paddle in the early-morning mist to catch the sunrise,

or perhaps a leisurely pontoon cruise to

Wonders wait for you to view

throughout the area. Take a hike off

Little Peter’s Creek and you’ll discover two waterfalls. With heavy rainfall,

they can get up to 10 feet, allowing

an experienced boater to go under it. You can get there in a kayak or canoe by launching from the boat access at Old Highway 25 Campground near

A number of small, intriguing

islands interrupt the open lake. The most

prominent is Sugar Loaf Mountain, which rises 500 feet from the water. Two islands close to each other are Goat Island and Scout Island, north of the Eden Isle

Marina. Cruising around Bird Island,

you’ll see steps and the foundation of a house. Perhaps even more exciting

are the 100,000+ purple martin birds

that roost here. This long, narrow island is located in the Big Water between

Eden Isle and Millers Point. Other islands in the lake include Boat Ridge, Eden Isle, Little Goat, Poker Hill and Taylor.

what lies beneath the lake: a cemetery, Indian burial grounds, roads, a bridge,

railroad tracks and house foundations -

If you prefer peace and quiet, dock at Five Fingers or Devil’s

Fork and seek out the shore or any of the small coves that dot

the area. Other boaters may pass by, but they’ll probably move on to claim their own spot. There are even private areas in the middle of the lake, where you can anchor down and go undisturbed all day.

For a more social destination, head for the unofficial

Party Cove 1 (on west side of lake) or Party Cove 2 (east side). Other festive gathering spots are found by word of mouth.

Lynn, Dave, Brush, Shiloh, Drip and Lazy are the names of but a few of the numerous coves along the lake.

MARINAS ON THE LAKE Sailboats, house boats,

motor boats, ski boats and party barges all share the waters of

Greers Ferry Lake. Eight marinas offer a wide variety of boat and

equipment rentals, lake access,

and entertainment. Marinas are favorite

hangouts for jovial locals who love to give visitors their own “insider’s view” of the best fishin’ hole or swimming spot.

Fairfield Bay Marina, one of the largest

on the lake housing more than 400 slips and a break wall, rents pontoon, fishing

and ski boats, wave runners, kayaks and

stand-up paddleboards. Year-round, take the Sugar Loaf Mountain shuttle or Belle Eagle on Greers Ferry Lake

screen all day. Now I stare at the river,” proclaims Lowell Myers. Not too long ago, Lowell left “the rat race,” as he calls it, a

states. It provides approximately 707,000 Kayaking

rainbow trout and 60,000 brook trout

annuallyâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;about 199,000 pounds of fish each year.

Playing a vital role in fishing resources,

the hatchery has been serving since 1965 to provide the provisions for Arkansas waters. Essential to the life and leisure of the area, the hatchery ensures that everyone is able to experience fantastic fishing.

The national hatchery has a positive

financial impact with $95 going back into the economy for every $1 of hatchery

Debbi’s message is it’s never too late

to find your balance and passion. Several

years ago, she discovered skydiving when

she celebrated her birthday with a tandem skydive. She knew before her feet touched the ground she

belonged in the sky. The thrill of

the jump, the sights and sounds, the power of the wind, and the required physical and mental focus all came into play in

renewing her love for life. All this

Greers Ferry Dam project is selected as the Corps of Engineers Project of the Year. Four nature trails – Sugarloaf Mountain, Buckeye, Mossy Bluff and Josh Park Memorial Trails – are all included in the National Trail System.

At the October 3, 1963 dedication, some 10,000 Arkansans

were present to marvel at the impressive structure and witness

history. It was JFK’s last public appearance before his fateful trip to Dallas. In his speech, he recognized the partnership between

the national government and state, noting the incredible benefit this dam is to Arkansas. “It serves as an example,” Kennedy said, “to the rest of the country of what we want to do to make it

Explore the Natural 4 – Waters that is! Greers Ferry Lake

Miller’s Point on Pryor Mountain.

At 1,200 feet above sea level, you’ll see

a picturesque, panoramic view of Greers Ferry Lake. From the bluffs, gaze at the

opposite shoreline, Cove Creek, and get a glimpse of Eden Isle. On a clear day, the Narrows Bridge comes into focus.

Directions: Diamond Bluff Road to Miller Point Drive.

Irish Hills Road. End up at the water’s

edge, look to the west and watch the Little Red River flowing into the lake.

The Edgemont Bridge and the “Narrows” are off in the distance. Directions: south of Edgemont Road.

On the Little Red River

Barnett Access. You know the fishing’s

good here, because it’s where Howard “Rip” Collins caught his world-record

German brown trout. This area’s called

the “Swinging Bridge,” named after the

suspension bridge that collapsed in 1989. For a unique view of Sugarloaf Mountain, walk west to Winkley Shoals.

Augusta River Walk. From the bluffs, you get a bird’s eye

view of the snake-like White River where it takes a big turn. Walk or bike into the woods and over a pedestrian bridge that doubles as a fishing spot. Just off Second Street in downtown Augusta.

On the Cache River

Cache River National Wildlife Refuge. Home to some of

the largest remaining tracks of bottomland hardwood forest, this 67,000-acre refuge, located in northeast Arkansas, sees

more than 150,000 visitors annually and is noted as the most important wintering area for mallards on the continent.

Breathe in the Beauty - Road & Trail Walk Railroad History Hiking Trail

on Ark. 16 in Shirley. A one-mile pathway follows the old roadbed of the historic

MN&A Railway. The trail is perfect for a

leisurely horseback ride or walk through

dense foliage with towering bluffs framing the view. The route traverses an old

railroad bridge high above the water guaranteed to leave you holding your breath!

Ferry before returning to its starting point. There is a great downhill slope into Heber Springs and three hard climbs on Ark. 16. White County Biking Tour. The

moderately difficult, 55-mile trail starts at the Searcy courthouse on Hwy. 36 and goes through Rosebud, Romance and back to Searcy.

Indian Falls Trail off West Cliff

Drive in Fairfield Bay. A quick, easy

scamper, this trail is just under a mile in

length with a beautiful path along the rim of Wild Horse Canyon. Two rock

formations and two waterfalls provide a perfect adventure to start your day. A bench can be your respite while the kiddos explore nearby.

HiddenGems HIKE AND BIKE TO SCENIC ADVENTURES

You’ve heard of Stonehenge,

but have you heard of stone

spheres? Adventurers travel to

see these natural wonders created by geological processes that

began 300 million years ago. Boulders range in size from 1 to 4 feet, with one

boulder in the creek of Murphy Hollow, east of Prim, 12 feet in diameter! Some stones

barely peek out of the ground and others are completely split open revealing their

historical formation. Often seen from the road, the spectacular ones are best discovered by trail.

Visit the Mossy Bluff trail, a 1.6 mile

out-and-back from the Carl Garner Visitor Center in Heber Springs. Hike along a

canyon rim; see lovely moss (hence the name), and a balanced rock caused by

“weathering.” At the end of the trail you’ll

be rewarded with a spectacular overlook

of the Little Red River and the Greers Ferry National Fish Hatchery.

Mountain Biking

Are you a cyclist who craves a challenge

with rewarding, spectacular views? Greers Ferry has a 60-mile loop gem for you.

Starting at the intersection of Ark. 16 and

25, go through Heber Springs, to Drasco,

Greers Ferry and back. A beautiful downhill slope will land you in Heber Springs, where you can stop for some bikefriendly refreshments.

Arkansas’ Best Places to Play, this course is uniquely situated on a peninsula in

the pristine waters of Greers Ferry Lake.

The John Floyd design is one of the most challenging layouts in the state with

drastic changes in elevation from tee to

green. On the 12th hole, the drop is 130 feet straight downhill to a semi-island

green. Tannenbaum is a 10-acre proactive facility that has five sets of tees and

includes a driving range, putting and

chipping green, and practice bunker.

The Red Apple Inn & Country Club

in Heber Springs features panoramic

hilltop views of the lake as well as treelined corridors. Designed by architect Gary Panks, this course was rated as

one of the 50 most scenic in the country by Golf Digest. With the Little Red River nearby, Red Apple provides a great

Ride the road toward charming places of play or a little bit of peace along the city’s lakes and rivers. 1: As a gateway entrance to Greers

Ferry Lake and the Little Red River,

the United States Corps of Engineers

completed Greers Ferry Dam in 1963,

and the completion was accompanied by

a visit and dedication by President John F. Kennedy that same year. The work of this project has produced benefits of beauty,

business and play. The Dam Site provides a marina, campgrounds, facilities and

opportunities for boating, sailing, water skiing, swimming, fishing, scuba diving and hiking, including a multi-purpose fitness trail. Greers Ferry Lake

is a man-made marvel and a perfect playground for fun.

2: Featuring seven natural springs

throughout the grounds, Spring Park has been attracting people since the 1830s.

Located at the center of town, the park is home to a walking trail, basketball court, skate park and amphitheater. The park

also hosts a variety of events each year, including Spring Fest in April.

3: Magness Lake hosts a magnificent scientific phenomenon

as trumpeter swans make their way to the waters each winter. More than 100 swans leave the Midwest for Arkansas and provide a beautiful bird watching opportunity November through February. Look for a yellow-banded swan. If you

see one, get the band number and email it to the Trumpeter Swan Society. They will send you a birth certificate and story of that swan! To experience this encounter, look into the

Swan Package at the Holiday Inn in Heber where they share

stories of the best places to bird watch and even provide bags

of corn. Drive east of Heber to Hays Road. Spot other creatures including Canada geese and mallards on the little lake.

to know about the Greers Ferry Lake area at the William Carl

Garner Visitor Center. West of

the dam and north of Heber Springs, this site holds exhibits on local history, the

featuring the Little Red River in a special audio slideshow titled, “The Saga of the

Theater. Listed on the National Register

of Historic Places, the Rialto continues to

HiddenGems ROCK ‘N’ ROLL HIGHWAY

Ever wonder where stars

stop on road trips? Searcy is

one of the many special stops along the renowned Rock ‘n’

Roll Highway 67. Stretching nearly 111 miles through a number of Arkansas

counties, this highway received its name from the rockabilly tunes turned out by

local musicians at locations throughout the state.

The road is dedicated to the culture

and creativity of the local performers

who helped shape the region’s musical

landscape. Big-name rockabilly artists who made their way along these miles include

Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Pioneer Village in Searcy

Johnny Cash, Conway Twitty, Sonny Burgess and Billy Lee Riley.

Signs were placed after the highway’s

completion in 2011, designating

portions of the area’s highlights and historical hotspots. Find the nearest

History Walk. A button factory once stood

in Augusta, manufacturing mother-of-pearl buttons from shells of the Mississippi

there today. Nearly destroyed by the Civil War, this town was rebuilt entirely by its

citizens and stands today as a testament to the blessings and benefits of living off the land. Listed on the National Register and Arkansas Heritage Trails System, this city has surprising stories to share.

HiddenGems BUTTON FACTORY: THE TALES OF SHELLS

“Ever so often, I find a button shell

along the river bank,” said Augusta

city manager Kip Davis as he shares the story of the Augusta button

factory that used to dwell near the

banks of the White River. Steamboat and

commercial fishermen of the early 1900s would smoke mussel shells and search

for pearls. Sending the rest to the factory, they would be used for button punching and production.

In operation until the 1930s, the factory

left traces of these treasures that can be found along the banks of the river still

today. Perfect circles remain where the buttons were removed. They are an

unusual sight to stumble upon and a unique remnant of Augusta’s past.

Dozens of these distinct shells can

be found from Davis’ own collection at a number of locations throughout the

state, including Powhatan State Park and Museum, Old State House Museum and Parkin Archeological Park. Take note Duck Hunting

of these story-telling shells and be sure

to search for them and discover parts of Augusta’s past.

• Wear a Coast Guard approved life jacket, many types and styles are available. • Check all safety equipment, replace and repair before launching. • File a float plan with family and friends. • Be a courteous boater, follow the rules of the water. • Swimming near or under platforms on outboard motorboats, where CO2 (carbon monoxide) fumes accumulate, can kill.
