TO GREERS FERRY LAKE & THE LITTLE RED RIVER
There is something magical about this area.
Perhaps it’s the long twisting roads throughout Van Buren and Cleburne
counties or the lush topography & beautiful bodies of water, or the rock
formations that tell a story with the petroglyphs and faces, or the 3 million plus year old sandstone bridge. Or, maybe it’s that unique view you’re
rewarded with after climbing to the top of Sugar Loaf Mountain, with a sky
so close and bold, it’s as if you could reach out, touch it and swirl it around a bit. Or, how about standing at the overlook at Bridal Veil Falls, a couple
just got engaged there last weekend, right in front of me. Or, stand on the banks of the River in Woodruff County, surrounded by historical buildings
while you watch a child catch their first fish. Or, the famous Little Red River, and let’s not forget the White River in White County, both are where great fisherman are born.
It’s all of this and more. So much more it would be impossible to tell
you about it within this space. And, even if I did tell you, it wouldn’t be the same. You’ve got to experience what it feels like. I promise you the air is different here, whether you’re cliff diving, motorcycle riding, swimming, kayaking, fishing, or hiking to the top of Sugar Loaf. When you get to
the top and take that first full breath, you’ll know exactly what it feels like. When you do, write me. I’d love to hear about it. See you at the top!

HiddenGems ADVENTURE – ABOVE & BELOW THE WATER
Your inner Jacques Cousteau
will thrill to learn that Greers Ferry Lake has features beneath the
water’s surface! In 1962, the Greers Ferry Dam and Lake, authorized in
the Flood Control Act of 1938, came into
being. Farmers moved their production to
the higher ground and entire communities, such as Higden, began life anew. Grab a
map and let your fingers trace the paths of
submerged roads and railroads. You’ll also see where cemeteries, levees and other
structures are located - monuments to life before the lake was born. Adventurous
scuba divers may decide to plunge the depths to find submerged treasures, foundations and even a gas station!
Divers will also enjoy the stunning rock formations that hide below the water.
If staying above water is more your
style, try a canoe or kayak paddle in the early-morning mist to catch the sunrise,

setting German brown, rainbow, cutthroat and brook trout. Emerging icy cold from
beneath the massive dam, this fly fishing
mecca, extends 32 miles from Greers Ferry Dam near Heber Springs to Pangburn,
eventually flowing into the White River. The river winds through a land marked
by rugged red bluffs, majestic hardwood hillsides and captivating bluffs. Enjoying

Drawn to the River
Floating the river is a right of passage
for many in Arkansas. Because life is always flowing, and ever changing.
Paddling on a warm sunny day, bringing
nothing but your best friend and a fishing pole. Floating aimlessly and pulling over
on a riff to wade out into the cold, flowing river. Nothing better.
Casual floaters can ease along,
stopping at their pleasure, and partaking in the peaceful pace of river life. The
scenery resembles an impressionistic the river. The view becomes sharper
as the day goes on, and changes again
as the sun sinks slowly. Canoers have the
option of fishing, stopping on a shoal and cooking their catch. A few minutes on the shore can result in a relaxing feel that will last for hours. The soothing sound of the moving water cannot be replicated.

adventurers pass on their experiences to the rest of the family and invite them on return trips.
Located below the Greers Ferry Dam,
the Greers Ferry National Fish Hatchery produces rainbow trout for restocking the Little Red River and other dams in
Arkansas, Oklahoma and neighboring
states. It provides approximately 707,000 Kayaking
rainbow trout and 60,000 brook trout
annually—about 199,000 pounds of fish each year.
Playing a vital role in fishing resources,
the hatchery has been serving since 1965 to provide the provisions for Arkansas waters. Essential to the life and leisure of the area, the hatchery ensures that everyone is able to experience fantastic fishing.
The national hatchery has a positive

were present to marvel at the impressive structure and witness
history. It was JFK’s last public appearance before his fateful trip to Dallas. In his speech, he recognized the partnership between
the national government and state, noting the incredible benefit this dam is to Arkansas. “It serves as an example,” Kennedy said, “to the rest of the country of what we want to do to make it

Miller’s Point on Pryor Mountain.
At 1,200 feet above sea level, you’ll see
a picturesque, panoramic view of Greers Ferry Lake. From the bluffs, gaze at the
opposite shoreline, Cove Creek, and get a glimpse of Eden Isle. On a clear day, the Narrows Bridge comes into focus.
Directions: Diamond Bluff Road to Miller Point Drive.

edge, look to the west and watch the Little Red River flowing into the lake.

good here, because it’s where Howard “Rip” Collins caught his world-record
German brown trout. This area’s called
the “Swinging Bridge,” named after the
suspension bridge that collapsed in 1989. For a unique view of Sugarloaf Mountain, walk west to Winkley Shoals.

Cache River National Wildlife Refuge. Home to some of
the largest remaining tracks of bottomland hardwood forest, this 67,000-acre refuge, located in northeast Arkansas, sees
more than 150,000 visitors annually and is noted as the most important wintering area for mallards on the continent.
HiddenGems TWICE AS SWEET SUGAR LOAF MOUNTAIN There are two Sugar Loaf
Mountains! Who knew? Clearing up the confusion once and for
all, the two are in the same area and provide scenic views and activities at each individual location. Hike them both! Sugarloaf’s name is believed to
have been given by early settlers, as the mountain’s top layers resembled loaves of unrefined sugar of the time.
Sugarloaf Mountain (aka land side)
stands nearly 700 feet above the valley, east of Heber Springs, overlooking the
Little Red River. This landlocked location provides perfect views of the sunrise or
sunset and is a popular location with three varying trails for hikers and climbers.
Trek the Summit trail to the top of this
sandstone sweet spot with a spectacular view of the river at your feet.
Sugar Loaf Mountain Island (aka lake

Collins Creek
Arkansas, rises 540 feet above Greers Ferry Lake and is accessible from Fairfield Bay
Marina by canoe, kayak or a scenic cruise. Designated as one of the nation’s first
historic scenic trails, blaze down a path that’s a piece of history with mountain-
forming rocks more than 300 million
years old. The nature trail is a 1.5-mile round trip hike that is rewarded with stunning panoramic views.

HiddenGems HIKE AND BIKE TO SCENIC ADVENTURES
You’ve heard of Stonehenge,
but have you heard of stone
spheres? Adventurers travel to
see these natural wonders created by geological processes that
began 300 million years ago. Boulders range in size from 1 to 4 feet, with one
boulder in the creek of Murphy Hollow, east of Prim, 12 feet in diameter! Some stones
barely peek out of the ground and others are completely split open revealing their
historical formation. Often seen from the road, the spectacular ones are best discovered by trail.
Visit the Mossy Bluff trail, a 1.6 mile
out-and-back from the Carl Garner Visitor Center in Heber Springs. Hike along a
canyon rim; see lovely moss (hence the name), and a balanced rock caused by
“weathering.” At the end of the trail you’ll
be rewarded with a spectacular overlook

TWO HOLES IN ONE AT FAIRFIELD BAY
Mountain Ranch Golf Club, located in the resort
community of Fairfield Bay, is rated as the #1 resort golf course in Arkansas, according to Golf Digest and Golflink. Known as the place where PGA pro John Daly hit the big leagues, it
comes as no surprise this is a “must play” course on the Natural State Golf Trail. Renowned architect Edmund Ault designed
the challenging layout with a par 5, 14th hole that presents an
80-foot drop from tee to fairway and a 15th hole that offers an
uphill 395-yard slope - considered by many to be the toughest hole in the state.
Indian Hills Golf Resort showcases natural surroundings of
lush trees, deep bunkers, small sloped greens, plus an historical Indian Rock Cave off the number 9 fairway. The signature hole is the par 3, 17th hole where players are challenged to hit
across a large ravine onto an elevated green. Hit that shot and you just might get that birdie!

the United States Corps of Engineers
completed Greers Ferry Dam in 1963,
and the completion was accompanied by

business and play. The Dam Site provides a marina, campgrounds, facilities and
opportunities for boating, sailing, water skiing, swimming, fishing, scuba diving and hiking, including a multi-purpose fitness trail. Greers Ferry Lake
is a man-made marvel and a perfect playground for fun.
2: Featuring seven natural springs
throughout the grounds, Spring Park has been attracting people since the 1830s.
Located at the center of town, the park is home to a walking trail, basketball court, skate park and amphitheater. The park

“Dad fell in love with the
beauty of Arkansas,” Rita Fox
said, revealing the story of the
start to her family business, the RoZark Hills Coffee Roasterie.
On 80 acres, her father’s dream
became a reality as they developed a
one-of-a-kind coffee roasterie in Rose Bud. “And here we are today,” she continues,
“nearly 20 years later,” as she shares a whiff of her tasty brew.
And while the coffee is wonderful, what
really makes this place special are the
roasted beans. Beans from areas around the world - including Indonesia, Africa, South America, Central America and
beyond - are imported and roasted to
perfection on site. Blends can be found at
coffeehouses throughout the state including Midnight Oil in Searcy and Jitterbug in Heber Springs.

HiddenGems BUTTON FACTORY: THE TALES OF SHELLS
“Ever so often, I find a button shell
along the river bank,” said Augusta
city manager Kip Davis as he shares the story of the Augusta button
factory that used to dwell near the
banks of the White River. Steamboat and
commercial fishermen of the early 1900s would smoke mussel shells and search
for pearls. Sending the rest to the factory, they would be used for button punching and production.
In operation until the 1930s, the factory
left traces of these treasures that can be found along the banks of the river still
today. Perfect circles remain where the buttons were removed. They are an
unusual sight to stumble upon and a unique remnant of Augusta’s past.
Dozens of these distinct shells can
be found from Davis’ own collection at a number of locations throughout the
state, including Powhatan State Park and Museum, Old State House Museum and Parkin Archeological Park. Take note Duck Hunting
