NEW YORK CITY’S POPULATION HAS CONTINUOUSLY BEEN ON THE RISE, EXPECTED TO REACH 9 MILLION PEOPLE OVER THE NEXT 23 YEARS. THE NEED FOR AFFORDABLE HOUSING IS PLAYING A PREDOMINANT ROLL IN THIS GROWTH. THIS INCREASING NEED FOR HOUSING PROVIDES AN OPPORTUNITY FOR HOUSING TO PLAY PREVAILING ROLE IN THE ADVANCEMENT OF ARCHITECTURE. HOUSING HAS FALLEN VICTIM TO THE STANDARDIZATION OF THE NEW YORK CITY BUILDING CODE. NOW IS THE TIME TO PUSH THE CONCEPT OF WHAT URBAN HOUSING CAN BE. THE GOAL OF THE STUDIO IS TO FOCUS ON THIS QUESTION.

COMPUTER LOGICS IS A COMPUTER CODING BASED SEMINAR THAT TEACHES THE FUNDAMENTALS TO CODING. THE COURSE USES THE SOFTWARE PROCESSING AS A STARTING POINT TO INTRODUCES VISUAL SKETCHES FROM CODE. THE SECOND HALF OF THE COURSE, THE STUDENT PRESENTS A PROJECT IN WHICH HE OR SHE DESIGNS, FABRICATES, AND CODES. THIS PROJECT IS AN ARDUINO POWERED KIT CNC MACHINE THAT IS USED TO DEPOSIT LIQUID PLASTER BASED UPON A PROCESSING SKETCH.

THIS PROJECT PRESENTS THE UNIQUE CHALLENGE OF BUILDING NEW PUBLIC SCHOOLS IN A CITY THAT HAS A CONTINUALLY INCREASING POPULATION AND MINIMAL REAL ESTATE PROPERTY. THIS PROJECT LOOKS INTO DESIGNING ON NEW YORK CITY’S PIERS AS A POSSIBLE SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM OF LIMITED SPACE. THIS PARTICULAR PROJECT LOOKS AT REMOVING THE CURRENT PIER’S SURFACE AND BUILDING UPON THE CURRENT PILLED STRUCTURE THAT EXISTS. THE SCHEME FOR THE PROJECT WAS DEVELOPED AROUND THE IDEA OF ESTABLISHING A DUAL CORRIDOR SYSTEM, ONE SERVING THE “PRIVATE” - THE CLASSROOMS AND ONE SERVING THE “PUBLIC” - LARGE PROGRAM SHARED SPACES. wHILE EACH OF THESE ARE SERVING A SPECIFIC USE, THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THESE CORRIDORS ARE IMPORTANT IN CREATING INTERESTING, ENGAGING SPACES THAT ARE NEEDED IN A SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT.

THE COURSE LOOKS EXPLORES HOW TO GAIN CONTROL OF “RANDOMNESS” OF THE TOOL IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE A CERTAIN LOOK OR MOVEMENT. FABRICATION SEMINAR MUNCIE MAKES LAB, MUNCIE, IN JAMES KERESTES
ELEVEN ARCHITECTURE STUDENTS MET WEEKLY TO DEVELOP A PROJECT THAT UTILIZED TECHNIQUES AND TECHNOLOGIES CLOSELY ASSOCIATED WITH “DIGITAL FABRICATION.” WEEKS OF INTENSE DISCUSSION AND PIN-UPS WOULD ULTIMATELY RESULT IN A COMPREHENSIVE SOLUTION TO THE EXPLORATORY IDEAS PRESENTED IN CLASS, AS WELL AS INTRODUCING US FORMALLY TO MEANS OF RAPID PROTOTYPING, TROUBLESHOOTING, AND SUCCESSFUL ASSEMBLY. THE FINAL DESIGN IS A PRODUCT OF HANDS ON EXPERIMENTATION, THOUGHTFUL EXECUTION AND MORE IMPORTANTLY STRONG STUDENT COLLABORATION WITH CLEAR OBJECTIVES FOR BOTH THE PRESENT AND FUTURE OF THE EXHIBITION.
