Chimney Swifts are known to take up residence in chimneys and other chimney-like structures from March through August in the panhandle. They are a federally protected, migratory bird, and come here only to nest and stay long enough for their young to learn to fly. Chimney Swifts will return to the same chimney year after year. It is extremely important to have the fireplace and chimney cleaned to remove any nesting material or matter left behind, as it can cause a respiratory condition called Histoplasmosis. It is also important to have an inspection to evaluate what needs to be done to keep them from coming back to your home in the future. Here at ARC, we are experts in handling issues caused by Chimney Swifts and ensuring they don’t return to your chimney.

letter from the Associate Publisher An Adventurous Life in High Heels My friend Todd Reeves says, “Personal style should reflect who you are as a person.” So, with fashion and style as our editorial focus in June, I started wondering about my style. As a child with flying pigtails and bare feet, I followed my brother through the woods of West Virginia to explore the unknown. I dressed nicely for church and school but found it hard to climb trees in a skirt and tossed them for jeans as soon as possible. Little did I know I was slowly building my personal style in life. The words fashion and style often send our thoughts to evening gowns and Gucci bags. However, I believe a person’s style is a composite of the daily life they lead. It starts with the cars you drive, the restaurants you frequent, and a preference for cappuccino over coffee. Some ladies won’t be seen in public without makeup, while others believe a baseball cap and sunscreen are perfectly acceptable while shopping for an evening gown. When embraced and built upon, your personal style defines you. I welcome varied interests in life, such as fine wines, elegant dinners, and the occasional opera. I also feed my rush for adrenaline with adventure riding on motorcycles and tent camping. When trying to decide what my style is, I decided there is no title for personal style. Nothing beats the feel of a silk evening gown swirling around my legs more than the grip of my motorcycle gloves on a dirt bike. What can I say -- I love my adventurous life in high heels! So my advice is to find your unique style and wear it proudly. Enjoy our June issue and if you know of a non-profit or charity holding an event that you would like to see featured in VIP Pensacola, please call me. Our mission at VIP Pensacola is to support as many non-profit causes as possible. Thank YOU for supporting VIP Pensacola; please be kind, courteous, and shop local.

OPERAZZI

P
ensacolaOpera’s annual fundraiser event, Operazzi Under the Big Top was held at Sanders Beach-Corinne Jones Resource Center on May 13. This whimsical, yet formal event had men dressed in tuxes and some of the women in carnival-themed gowns. Operazzi Under the Big Top was where illusion and excitement met sophistication and class. From the circus-themed decorations to the performances by Ballet Pensacola and the specialty trapeze act, Flying with Ease, this event had it all. This year’s emcee was Marty Stanovich, who added his own unique flair in circus ringleader attire. Attendees enjoyed the festive big-top theme, with big-top photo ops, popcorn, and a four-course gourmet meal with wine at every table. There was even a dessert station featuring, among other treats, a cotton candy machine. Luxury items, including jewelry, a New Orleans hotel and football weekend package, and a week-long stay in Las Vegas were all up for the live auction. There were also carnival games to be played. Everyone danced to the sounds of Mr. Big and the Rhythm Sisters and enjoyed amazing performances by Emily Michiko Jensen (soprano) and Imara Miles (mezzo soprano), two of the 2021-22 Artists in Residence for Pensacola Opera. All proceeds support the mission of the Pensacola Opera, which is to enrich the culture of Northwest Florida by producing professional opera performances, educational programs, and other opera-related community events.

he Bread & Table Club presented Croquet and Rosé on the Bay on May 14 at the Pensacola Museum Plaza. This new location gave the group more room to spread out and enjoy the fun, for the teams and spectators alike. This year was about more courts and more teams, all to help the cause that Bread & Table supports passionately, Feeding the Gulf Coast’s Children’s Backpack Program. There were 29 different teams, with fun names like “Guns & Rosé,” “Mallet Mafia,” and “Wicket Real Good.” In keeping with traditional croquet rules, all participants and most observers donned their best white outfits for the event. Attendees enjoyed food, specially created by Nancy’s Catering and Events, along with an incredible dessert display that was beautifully presented under the crisp white tent. Hand-rolled cigars by Cigar Factory were enjoyed while listening to Marty Stanovich, who added his own flair of commentary and music as emcee of the event. Silent auctions raised funds for this important cause with prizes such as rounds of golf, dog accessories, and VIP tickets to Life’s a Dance, which included a meet-and-greet with Dancing with the Stars performers/cast. White bistro tables, white benches, and even a white couch and lounge chair area were the perfect place to sip drinks from The Bottle Shop. Wine Bar, and The LePetit Pecan.

Shades of Summer story by Anna Stockton
W
ith the glorious Florida summer coming up, it’s time to start thinking about our sunny accessories. Much like swimsuit shopping, finding the right shades can be a daunting task -- only without all the crying (hopefully). There’s so much to consider when choosing the perfect sunglasses, factors like style, color, quality, and so on. While we can’t help you decide whether you want to be bold or sensible, or colorful or neutral with your shades, we can help you with the most important part, finding the right shape to accentuate your fabulous face.
SQUARE OR WAYFARER FRAMES Bringing out your features is the name of the game when it comes to a round face. Square and rectangular styles do a fabulous job of making those cheekbones pop and contouring your already beautiful face. Avoid round or soft edge shaped sunglasses as they can exaggerate the shape of your face in an unflattering way.
ROUND SHAPE
Your face narrows slightly at jawline and forehead and is widest from cheekbone to cheekbone.
16-17 Style_Shades of Summer - Pcola.indd 1
ROUND SHAPED FRAMES For those with a square-shaped face, rounding out the edges is a flattering look and round shaped sunglasses are the way to do just that. Rounded frames soften any edges and smooth out the angles of your face. Steer clear of square or rectangular frames, you’ll get a look that complements your best features with round frames. SQUARE SHAPE
Your forehead is at an even width with your jawline.
5/30/22 9:53 PM
Don’t worry fellas, we have you covered as well. While there are some similarities, you all have your own set of rules....and face shapes.
MOST STYLES FRAMES OVAL SHAPE (face is longer than wide)
SMALL D-FRAMES
DIAMOND SHAPE (wide cheekbones, tapers at forehead and chin)
SQUARE FRAMES
ROUND SHAPE (face is widest at cheekbones)
MOST STYLES WITH LARGER FRAMES TRIANGLE SHAPE (larger jawline than forehead)
ROUNDED FRAMES
SQUARE SHAPE (forehead is even width with jawline)
AVIATOR FRAMES
HEART SHAPE (forehead is widest part of face and gets narrower at jawline)
ROUNDED FRAMES
RECTANGLE (similar to square shape but with boxy cheekbones and jawline)
CAT EYE OR AVIATOR FRAMES
MOST STYLE FRAMES For the lucky beauties with an oval shaped face, almost anything goes! Most frames are flattering to an oval-shaped face, so you have the freedom to try out different trends and styles. Of course, you’ll want to watch proportion and make sure the frame size doesn’t overwhelm your features or that the frame is wider than your face.
OVAL SHAPE
Simply put, your face is longer than it is wide.
16-17 Style_Shades of Summer - Pcola.indd 2
Unlike round and square face shapes that are best complemented by the opposite shaped frame, styles that mimic the heart shape are the most flattering for well, heart shaped faces. Cat eye and aviator frames start wide then taper at the bottom, accentuating the best features of a heart shaped face. Proportion is key here too, if your features are more delicate, choose a smaller frame, while you can go bold if you have bold features to support the look. HEART SHAPE
The forehead is the widest part of your face and gets narrower as you get to the jawline.

housands of crawfish lovers from across the Gulf Coast converged at Seville Square and Fountain Park for the 37th annual Pensacola Crawfish Festival that took place April 29-May 1. Nearly 10 tons of crawfish, corn, potatoes, and sausage were served during the three-day festival. The crawfish were brought in by 18-wheeler trucks all the way from J. Bernard Seafood in Cottonport,
Louisiana and were cooked on-site by Cordova Crawfish Company. Along with the crawfish, the festival had other food vendors with plenty of great food to choose from. Live music entertained the crowds, while kids’ activities kept the youngest attendees busy. Various arts and crafts vendors featured original art, photography, gourmet items, jewelry, novelties, woodworking, metals, and glass art.

roaring time was had by all as The Junior League of Pensacola hosted its annual dinner on May 17. The Pensacola Yacht Club transitioned back in time to the 1920s. Guests pulled out all the stops, donning flapper dresses, sequin headpieces, and elaborate pearls. The evening started off with a members mingle where guests enjoyed their drinks while taking in the waterfront views of the venue. Current president, Laura Griffin, kicked the evening off giving a summary of the impact the organization has had on the community. To celebrate members who have gone above and beyond in their contributions to the league, awards and scholarships were presented. Members receiving awards included: Katie Lapoure, Savannah Bailey, Jennifer Nalor, Dr. Nate and Lindsay Durtschi, and Madrina Ciano. The speeches concluded with a ceremonial “passing of the gavel” to welcome incoming president, Katherine Murphy. Murphy then addressed the crowd, highlighting the recent amendment to the Junior League’s mission statement saying, “The Junior League of Pensacola is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable.”

he resounding first impression of a boutique wine shop within a mall presents itself as a fallacy. Wine connoisseurs would be quick to assume a shop with such a location would not house such an impressive collection, and the only boutique wines present would be commonly known names, which truly do not qualify as boutique. However, owner Roger Johnson has accumulated a selection of over 1000 distinct wines from all over the world. From Burgundy to Bordeaux, to South Africa, to New Zealand, and from Slovenia, Croatia, and Cyprus to North and South America, there are bottles representing well over 300 different wine regions. This hidden gem has become a destination for wine lovers from all over the region as well as many visitors who find it easily once they land at Pensacola International Airport. With a collection as impressive as the one at BTG, the idea of a grand staff and an extensive inventory would have to exist. Remarkably, Johnson does it mostly on his own. Johnson prides himself on his collection and having something for everyone. Simply name a region or a brand, and he will know if he has it -- the vintage and the style, all off the top of his head. Unlike traditional wine shops and tasting rooms, he carries no menu.
24-25 Swizzle_Beyond the Grape.indd 1
5/30/22 10:00 PM
Johnson believes that the presence of a menu does not allow the wine to flow naturally and prevents a true expansion of the palate from taking place. He also prides himself on the idea that “wine is for everyone” and does not have to be a black-tie event to try something truly amazing. Johnson developed his incredible palate through travel. As a Finnish citizen, with family living all over Europe, he was first introduced to wine and was able to visit many wineries as a teenager. In 1998 he then took a grand adventure through the South African wine country. The incredible series of experiences he had sealed his fate as a passionate preceptor for wines of the world that would end up being Beyond the Grape in 18 years. The store in Pensacola was originally opened by a business partner based in New Orleans who has a shop at Riverwalk Mall specializing in fruit-based wines made in Florida and Louisiana. Johnson lived in New Orleans for 3 years where he got to know the Gulf Coast and when the Pensacola store became available, he jumped at the opportunity. He was up in Seattle, where he has lived most of his adult life and became immersed in the wine scenes in Washington and Oregon. Johnson was excited to become a wine merchant in Pensacola and to offer a wine tasting experience like he has found throughout his travels. While the store retains the best of the locally made fruitinfused wines and meads (Roger prides himself on the relationships he’s developed with the best winemakers in Florida), the store’s current inventory includes wines from all the best wine regions in the world, and some surprising up-and-coming wine regions. After six years, BTG is easily the most sought-after wine shop in Pensacola, where a “Free Wine Tasting” sign from the original New Orleans location proudly glows brightly into the walkways of the mall. The frequent patrons of the establishment consistently come back not only for the wine, but also for the incredible conversation that Roger Johnson provides. Due to its location just within the main mall entrance, BTG gets a large amount of foot traffic, for both the unique selection of wines, as well as for the wine smoothies which are an homage to the establishment’s roots. As one looks around waiting for the concoction of wine and slush, an inherent interest begins to take place. Since Roger also offers free sampling, individuals who may have never even thought about giving fine wine a try are brought
24-25 Swizzle_Beyond the Grape.indd 2
into an otherwise protected world by a stereotype of bourgeois events and pretentious sommeliers. Johnson chooses to “meet customers where they’re at.” To him, it is a vitalization of community and a way to explore the world, all within the walls of the Cordova Mall. At BTG, the wine flows and, unlike many tasting rooms, Roger lets the customer, novice or experienced, explain what they are tasting. It is a no-judgment zone, and if someone does not like a particular wine, he simply shifts the palate and is successful in finding something that they would enjoy. Beyond the Grape is also a host to many events. One can enjoy a glass of the finest wines and learn to paint from local artists by booking an Onto the Canvas paint and sip class with all equipment included. BTG also hosts events featuring regions and even specific vineyards, as winery owners and winemakers from all over the world consistently visit Roger to present their wines in Florida. BTG has featured events focused on South Africa, Italy, Cyprus, Slovenia, and Croatia, and a few years ago held what some call the finest exhibition of Washington state wines ever presented in Florida. Whether you’re a wine connoisseur or are just curious about wine, Roger Johnson at Beyond the Grape looks forward to meeting you and helping you find the perfect wine to suit your taste. Beyond the Grape is located in Cordova Mall, main entrance. 5100 N. Ninth Avenue, Suite E537, Pensacola 32504 850-696-2916, PensacolaFruitWinery.com.

Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak. -- Rachel Zoe No one can put style in a box - it reaches to places ranging from what we wear to what we eat. One’s personal style can be exhibited by the jewelry they wear, the car they drive, the design of their house and landscape, and yes - by the clothes they wear. Style infiltrates all parts of our life- it is diverse and and we love to share that diversity through our many advertisers and their offerings.

Green Perspectives from
The Style of the Place article by Steve R. Black
We in the outh are confident that our landscapes are li ely much better than those in the northern states. While wal ing downtown in hicago last summer with friends I started noticing that the planting beds along the streets were not only landscaped and planted with very creative seasonal flowers, many of these beds also had orchids and bromeliads along with small sculptures to entertain and intrigue the passing pedestrian. eep in mind the relatively short season they will be enjoyed in this northern climate. his was impressive since I have been led to believe by the media that I may get shot while wal ing these same streets. We all travel and yes, I probably judge a city s landscape more than most. Maybe our naturally beautiful Northwest Florida region 28
may consider assessing our degree of enhancements above those provided by nature. An example close to home, Fairhope, Alabama, is somewhere many of us will go to ill an afternoon or evening. his small town da les its citi ens and visitors with a continuous floral display. his particularly draws me to it -- this just feels good. I li e to feel good, it sure beats the alternative. While traveling, I have found that you really can t ma e heads or tails out of why some cities have a particular personality along with its chosen priorities and the next city close by will not even recogni e a need. No doubt this must connect somehow to the history of that city. It should be noted that Fairhope has been embracing the charm and beauty of its landscapes

my political convictions I would hope that we all desire our big little city (as it’s been called) to be better. Better for us now and better for the next generation. It’s not just about flowers but an attitude towards what is acceptable concerning our public spaces. I believe our collective attitude concerning the spaces we occupy say much about who we are and ultimately affect who we become. I have noticed that if a public space has very little trash and the landscape overall is very nice, people are much more compliant and are much less likely to leave their trash behind. When a community takes pride in its public spaces the individuals are more likely to do the same.
since the early 80s. This lasting movement started with Dr. Howard Wulff leading the Rotary Club in raising funds for tree planting. By the mid 80s Fairhope had built its first greenhouse and as a municipality, started growing its own seasonal flowers that would become almost an iconic symbol for Fairhope. Of course, this has expanded along with many other landscape additions and projects. By contrast, Pensacola, Florida, is located right on the waterfront of Pensacola Bay and it seems that we may have used this natural beauty as a crutch. In some communities it appears that there are big budgets to fund exciting, new projects but if those budgets do not consider proper, ongoing maintenance, those improvements never fulfill their intended potential of improving quality of life. I love Pensacola and am not intending to reflect negatively on our city but to just point out that we can do better and why it’s important. As we all go forward and interact with our outdoor spaces it’s easy to focus on the beaches and the plethora of waterfront views. Many people are moving to Northwest Florida with great expectations of a better life experience. We do live in an incredible area with much natural beauty. Are we good stewards of what we have been given? Aside from
We take vacations to get to a place to feel better. If we have been somewhere before and it was a positive experience, then we can immediately put ourselves back in that very place in our mind. We exercise, dine alfresco, have massages, pedicures, manicures, and much more to “feel better.” Feelings are not everything but how you feel has a tremendous impact on your daily life. How important is this? Public spaces are very much part of the soul of any city. Public landscape projects are often funded through one-time sources with no plan for ongoing maintenance. I have experienced this first-hand and have had numerous conversations with both contractors and municipality managers concerning this very real problem. Many times, the perception is that these dollars are almost frivolous if spent correctly maintaining a landscape. I believe that a decision not to spend those dollars is a decision to fail. We want our children to take pride in their community and eventually make the life choice to occupy Northwest Florida just as we have. Cleanliness and beauty make a difference. People ultimately vote with their feet. Northwest Florida and South Alabama are in a real estate boom. The decisions we make today determine our future. Let’s do better!

Associate Publisher Verla Price thanked everyone for their continued support and help in making VIP Pensacola a success. Door prizes, donated by local businesses, were given out, topping off a fun and festive evening.

he 17th Annual Soundside Splendor was held poolside at Portofino Island Resort on May 1. This event was held to benefit the Children’s Home Society of Florida, which has been building bridges to success for children and families since 1902. The 400+ guests were greeted under the crisp, white tent and enjoyed specialty eats such as shrimp and grits, braised beef short ribs, oysters on the half shell, and tuna tartare with truffle vinaigrette, all prepared by local, top chefs Chef Dan Dunn, Chef Julio Lucero, Chef Gregg McCarthy, Chef Darian Hernandez, and Chef Blake Rushing. Featured wines from as far away as South Africa, France, and Spain were also served. A live steel drum performer played while the guests made their way to the items in the silent auctions, live auctions, and the chance auction – which was a $3,000 shopping spree donated by Bere’ Jewelers. The live auction items consisted of a 2.5-hour sunset cruise aboard the Portofino catamaran and a 53-foot catamaran sailboat cruise during the Blue Angels’ practice show, both for up to 39 of your closest friends. Exclusive wines from some of Pensacola’s most notable wine collectors were also up for auction.

T
he Greater Pensacola Figure Skating Club (GPFSC) is a local, volunteer-run non-profit promoting physical activity and improving ice sports accessibility in our region. GPFSC is a proud member of Learn to Skate USA, (LTSUSA) endorsed by Olympic National Governing Bodies- US Figure Skating, USA Hockey, US Speedskating, Special Olympics, and Move United. The organization has been in existence for 26 years with over 250 members. Their curriculum is designed to help skaters of all ages and abilities master the fundamentals of ice skating, while having fun in a safe, supportive, and encouraging environment. GPFSC’s program ensures that everyone from preschoolers to adults, beginners to competitors, and skaters with disabilities can learn to skate. Whether skaters want to achieve Olympic fame or simply enjoy the recreational benefits of skating, this is the place where it all begins. GPFSC currently contracts ice from the Pensacola Bay Center. As the only sheet of public ice in Northwest Florida, skaters travel from as far as Mobile and Tallahassee to skate here. GPFSC offers group classes and private coaching for both figure and hockey skaters as well as practice ice for members. Each session generally runs 6-8 weeks. All coaches are LTSUSA certified with successfully completed background checks and National SafeSport certification.
54-55 GiveCareShare - Greater Pensacola Figure Skating Club Pcola.indd 1
The Club’s endorsement by USA Hockey paved the way for their new partnership with the Pensacola Junior Ice Flyers (PJIF). GPFSC is running their second year of LTSUSA programming for aspiring hockey skaters looking to learn the fundamentals of skating first to then move into the Pensacola Junior Ice Flyers Learn to Play program. Many skaters who are already in PJIF’s Learn to Play program take full advantage of the ice time and sign up for the Power Skating Skills class to get an extra edge up on other players.
5/30/22 10:19 PM
Interview with Missy Frisco, President Greater Pensacola Figure Skating Club It is GPFSC’s mission to ensure everyone can learn to skate! How did the organization come about? The formation of our Club began back in 1996, with Judy Holmes and Dr. Dan Summers joining forces to provide recreational skating opportunities on the Pensacola Bay Center’s newly installed ice. What are some challenges your organization faces? Now more than ever, the greatest challenge is the lack of year-round ice on the Gulf Coast. Figure skating and youth hockey programs are both nearing full capacity and thriving! To expand current programming and offer many of the new opportunities that would benefit our community, this area needs a small, yearround, dedicated facility providing much more ice time. A stable, consistent schedule, daytime and weekend ice availability, storage space for equipment, a designated off-ice training area, and classroom space are all needed and currently unavailable. We are looking to the near future and hope to make this dream a reality soon. What impact has your organization had on the community? Ice sports provide non-traditional physical activities and wellness benefits for our community. Some families choose skating due to health conditions that may be aggravated by heat, outdoor allergens, etc. Other individuals may have never found their passion before skating with us. Skating promotes physical activity and healthy lifestyles while also improving mental health. This fall we will be offering an Adaptive Skating Program specifically for skaters with physical and intellectual challenges. Scholarships will be available thanks to a recent grant from the Kugelman Family Foundation. For the past several years our skaters have supported Santa’s Workshop at the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Northwest Florida. What are some future Goals for GPFSC? Our list of future goals could without a doubt
consume this entire publication. GPFSC’s primary goal is to have a year-round, dedicated facility in the Gulf Coast to allow ice sports to be more accessible. A dedicated facility would open the door for so many opportunities for both the public and organized recreational and amateur groups (GPFSC, Pensacola Junior Ice Flyers, Emerald Coast Ice Hockey League, and Pensacola Ice Warriors). Such a facility is a necessity for after school programming for at-risk youth as well as the expansion of our new Adaptive Skating program, neither of which can occur with the current ice situation. Summer camps, specialized clinics and seminars for figure skaters and hockey players, U.S. Figure Skating test sessions, and regional competitions all would benefit our community. Our LTSUSA curriculum offers something for everyone. It is a progressive system that leads to many different tracks and allows skaters to confidently advance to more specialized areas of skating, such as synchronized skating, ice dance, pairs skating, theatre on ice, and speed skating. We hope to one day soon expand into each of these within a dedicated facility. What is your position in the organization? I am the Learn to Skate USA Program Director and Events Coordinator for the Greater Pensacola Figure Skating Club and am currently serving my second term as President for the Club. How did you get involved? Our daughter began her first Learn to Skate Parent and Tot class when she was 2 ½ years old in Wisconsin. Eighteen years later she is a three-time U.S. Figure Skating National Medalist in Synchronized Skating, earning a National Gold Medal and two National Silver Medals. She has been a competitive synchronized skater since age 6 and we have traveled the country for Regional and National competitions. When our family moved to the Pensacola area in 2019, I discovered most people here were surprised to learn Pensacola
even had a Figure Skating Club and certainly no one knew it had been in existence for almost 24 years. It became my immediate mission to change the outlook on skating here since ice rinks are so prevalent throughout the remainder of the state. What events does your organization host? Our biggest celebration of the season is our Annual Spring Ice Show which showcases the talents of our skaters of all ages and abilities and even includes our skating parents who accompany their tots in classes. This season we plan to host “Try Skating for Free” and an “Adaptive Skating Kick-Off” event, both of which will be free and open to the public. GPFSC member skaters will have the opportunity to participate in a “Bring a Friend to Skate” event. We also have plans for Holiday and Spring Break Camps which are for all ability levels including beginners. Events are dependent on the Pensacola Bay Center ice availability. Registration is required for all events due to space limitations. What is the next event that’s open to the public? We will be hosting a “Meet and Greet “event in August where interested individuals and parents can learn more about our program and upcoming classes. What else would you like our readers to know about your organization? It is GPFSC’s mission to ensure everyone can learn to skate! We are working diligently to remove all barriers to participation. How can someone get involved with GPFSC? Whether someone wants to learn to skate or sharpen their skills, needs information, or would like to support our program, reach us at info@PensacolaFigureSkating.com. Follow us on social media or visit our website www. PensacolaFigureSkating.com to stay up to date on classes and events. June 2022 | 55

Cabaret on Holiday!
VIP Pensacola at Pensacola Little Theatre
photos & story by Chloe Peterkin
P
ensacola Little Theatre hosted their annual fundraiser on May 14 after a long awaited two year mandatory hiatus. Back, and more fabulous than ever, the sold out event drew some of the best dressed crowds to Pensacola Little Theater. This year’s event was Cabaret on Holiday! A night full of different holidays were enjoyed by all. In one memorable night, guests traveled through the theater to holiday themed spaces including Dave Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, Fourth of July, Valentine’s Day, Halloween, Christmas, and Mardi Gras. One hundred VIP guests were welcomed through a private entrance to an upper level space adorned with an open bar and delicious gourmet foods. VIP guests had a birdseye view to the 4th of July performance where a member of the theater climbed a 3-layer sculpted cake to perform. On the main floor, guests enjoyed watching talented aerialists, stilt walkers, and more! Entering the outdoor space, guests could enjoy their drinks from one of five open bars as as they listened to live music. The event truly held a year’s worth of celebration all in one unforgettable evening!

I AM PENSACOLA
Sara Lefevers
What is your hometown and how did you end up in the Pensacola area? I was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, and grew up in Columbus, Ohio. In 2010 I moved to Pensacola to study criminal justice at Pensacola Christian College. I fell in love with Pensacola, met a Philly boy and decided we never wanted to leave! What is your profession? Ha, I guess you could say my “profession” is community. I currently serve as President of The NISSI Project (the Network of Immediate Services for Survivors International), an anti-trafficking, faith based non-profit that aids as first responders for survivors of human trafficking. We assist law enfocement and healthcare professionals in providing immediate services the moment someone is rescued or identified, up until we can provide a long term, safe solution. I consider NISSI my ministry, meaning I didn’t choose it, but it was chosen for me. What are some of your favorite things about Pensacola? I love the thriving, family atmosphere of Pensacola. Although not perfect, Pensacola is a compassionate community that is dedicated to doing better in many areas. Pensacola is unique in many ways from its historical signifigance to its small, southern charm, yet rapidly growing infrastructure. Three words that best describe you. Determined, Compassionate, Imperfect. Favorite place for going out? We love to eat anywhere that is waterfront and we enjoy any activities on the water, beach, or bayfront. Bayview Park, Fort Pickens, and Wahoos Stadium are some of our favorites! We also love a chill day at home by the pool. What is one thing that you do not go a day without? That would be black, iced coffee. Finish this statement, I AM PENSACOLA because… I believe to my core that every person matters and was created with a purpose that makes them invaluable and should be treated as such. photo by Nicole Partridge
