Life doesn’t come with a manual. It comes with a mother. It is May, the month with a day dedicated to celebrating mothers -- those incredible, sweet, loving women who brought us into this world and often threatened to take us out. I often reflect on my childhood, realizing my mother was a saint, as she put up with my antics with a smile -- and a switch. I count my blessings that she taught me right from wrong, patience, and especially manners. The words “Please remove your elbows from the table” still echo in my head from time to time. If you are lucky enough to share May 8 with your mother, treat her to something unique and hold her dear to your heart. Throughout this issue, we are happy to showcase many people enjoying many events. Some of our stories will cheer your heart as we spotlight some fun pet features. If you are like me and travel with a furry companion, you check areas for local venues and events that welcome not only us, but our pets as well. In Adventure Out you will find many significant areas to explore with your pet and score an adventure nearby. Destin Style offers bold prints swinging into fashion -- maybe a new animal print on furniture or a statement piece will catch your attention. There is nothing like the thrill of landing a giant cobia and cooking your catch for dinner. See our fresh cobia taco recipe featured in Coastal Cuisine. If you know of a non-profit or charity holding an event you would like to see featured in VIP Destin Magazine, please call me. Our mission at VIP Destin is to support as many non-profit causes as possible. Thank YOU for supporting VIP Destin Magazine; please be kind, courteous, and shop local.

undreds of wine enthusiasts from across Northwest Florida and the world gathered at Grand Boulevard on the weekend of April 22 for the South Walton Beaches Wine and Food Festival. It was the 10th year for this can’t-miss event. The festivities started with the Wine Makers & Shakers event at Wine World of Destin on Thursday, and a Craft Beer & Spirits Jam took place on Friday at Grand Boulevard’s Town Center. However, the highlight of the weekend was the Grand Tasting on Saturday and Sunday. Guests attended this sold-out event and tasted over 600 wines and spirits from winemakers and distillers from around the globe. You couldn’t have asked for better weather for this favorite annual event. The sun was shining as wine tasters strolled through Grand Boulevard enjoying a variety of flavors from craft bourbon to every type of wine you can think of, and much more. Booths were set up throughout the park with food samples from the area’s best chefs, all pairing well with the beverage tastings available. On Saturday and Sunday the Nashville Songwriters Showcase, featuring several talented artists, kept guests entertained. The event’s founding sponsor is Destin Charity Wine Auction Foundation. All proceeds from South Walton Beaches Wine & Food Festival go to DCWAF, benefiting children in need in Northwest Florida.

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month article by Dr. David Adams

Despite all of the greatest modern medical advances, skin cancer still remains the most common cancer in America today. One in five Americans will develop skin cancer at some time in their life and over 5 million Americans were diagnosed with skin cancer in 2021. In fact, two people die of skin cancer every hour. Being aware of skin cancer and how to prevent it is the first part to beating the odds and coming out a winner. Do you remember ever getting sunburned? Ever been to the tanning bed? Is sunscreen a major inconvenience? It is a well established fact that sun exposure is associated with skin cancer. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is attributed to causing more than 90% of all skin cancers. UV radiation comes from the sun and also from tanning booths. The UV rays can even find us on cloudy days and they also easily reflect off innocent-looking surfaces such as sand, water, snow, and even concrete. Keeping our skin safe and preventing skin cancer begins with sun protection and sun avoidance, especially since unprotected skin can burn in as little as 15 minutes. Sunscreen, longsleeved sun protective clothing, wide-brim hats and sunglasses, and avoiding outdoor activities between 10 am and 4 pm (when the sun’s rays are most intense) are powerful strategies to keep everyone’s skin safe from the sun.

Unlike decades ago, today’s variety of sunscreens allows every individual to select a type of sunscreen that suits their skin and lifestyle. Sunscreens come in different strengths (SPFs)

and different formulations. The greater the SPF, the greater the sun protection. Sunscreens are formulated as lotions, creams, aerosol sprays, sticks, lip balms, and daily moisturizers. No matter one’s age, if you must be outside during the intense sun hours, using sunscreen on exposed skin and wearing sun protective clothing, a broadbrimmed hat, and sunglasses will give you the greatest degree of sun protection. In addition to protecting our skin, we ALL have the important responsibility to check our own skin, or a partner’s skin, to look for potential skin cancer. Since skin cancer never shows up with a label or a name tag, we all need to become aware of what signs to look for when checking for skin cancer. Here are three things everyone should remain alert for: 1. Any new lump, bump, spot, or blemish. 2. Any spot or growth that itches, hurts, crusts, recurrently bleeds for more than 3 weeks. 3. Any spot that changes in color, shape, size, or texture.

If you do identify a suspicious spot or spots or simply wish to have your skin professionally checked, don’t wait to bring it to the attention of your dermatologist or dermatology provider. All skin cancer is most easily treated when identified early. Your dermatologist is always here to help. As we welcome the warmer weather of May, take time to check your skin and pick out some sunscreens, a new hat, and new sun shirts -- then get outside and enjoy.

HAIR OF THE DOG

M

story by Anna Stockton

any of us have been there, although some more than others. That “oh my goodness, what have I done? Why did I drink that much? What did I say/do? Why was I dancing? That bar doesn’t even have a dance floor” moment when you open your eyes in the morning, knowing it’s going to be a long day of recovery. While you may be tempted to wallow in your misery as you chant “I’m never drinking again” over and over, there are some things you can do to help speed along the process and get you back to fully functioning adult status in no time. You’ve heard the saying “hair of the dog that bit you.” But what does that mean? Basically, it means to drink alcohol in order to recover from your hangover. Since hangovers are partly due to alcohol withdrawal, there is some science to support this hangover remedy. While having a drink or two will usually take the edge off your hangover and is a great way to go over the highlights of the previous night with your friends, it’s probably not the best habit to get into as it can perpetuate a cycle that isn’t exactly healthy. Another way to get yourself back up and running is to hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Not to get too “sciencey” but if you’ve noticed that you spend more time in the bathroom when you’re drinking, there’s a good reason for that. Alcohol inhibits the release of a hormone called vasopressin. This hormone decreases the amount of urine your kidneys make, since the hormone is decreased, your kidneys go into overdrive

18-19 Swizzle_Hair of the Dog.indd 1

4/27/22 9:29 PM

making urine when you’re tossing back a few. Basically, the more alcohol you drink, the more you have to urinate, the more dehydrated you can get. So, putting those fluids back in your body is key to feeling better, especially before bed. If your hangover comes with the unfortunate side effects of diarrhea and vomiting, you’re going to have to double up on the fluids. Drinks like Gatorade, Pedialyte, and liquid IV are always good to have on hand for these occasions. One of the side effects of alcohol intake is that it can seriously mess with your blood sugar, so some of that head pounding and weakness you feel the next day may actually be from low blood sugar, not the four glasses of wine, 2 beers and that shot you had, well maybe that too. And if you’re like me you exacerbate the problem by choosing to chat, dance, laugh, and basically do anything but put food in your body. But that means there’s an easy solution -- carbs baby! Toast and juice or a cheeseburger and coke can help bring your blood sugar levels back to where they need to be and put you on the road to recovery. Taking over the counter pain relievers is another good way to take the edge off your hangover, ibuprofen and aspirin are both helpful in getting rid of the headache and achy feeling that a night of overindulging can cause. Never take acetaminophen though as alcohol can intensify the toxic effects it can have on the liver. Caffeine can also help with a hangover. While it doesn’t necessarily have any magical effects like some of the others mentioned, the caffeine can snap you out of some of the grogginess that goes hand in hand with the aftermath of a night of going overboard. The last suggestion to get rid of your hangover and probably the most obvious is to sleep. Heavy alcohol intake can disrupt sleep patterns and cause you to have an exaggerated hangover due to sleep loss. Choosing your nights out wisely, and not the evening before a work day or an early morning of sports for your kids (hangs head in shame) will allow you to sleep in and possibly right through your hangover all together.

elected Best in Destin in the Senior Living Community category, The Blake at Miramar Beach hosted the Destin Chamber’s Business After Hours on March 24. Even though spring break was in full swing, the event was well attended. Held in the courtyard, attendees mingled as they listened to music by Colby Branson. The menu for the evening was on par with what the residents of The Blake have come to expect from Chef Keith Freudenberger: papas rellenas, mini beef and chicken empanadas, and jalapeno and cheese stuffed shrimp. While new to South Walton, The Blake family of communities has been around since 2007. Helping seniors live rich and fulfi lling lives, Tori Hughes, Area Director of Sales said, “People come here to gain quality of life. We have many onsite amenities to keep our residents young, happy, and healthy.” With everything from 24-hour nursing and personal care to a movie theater, The Blake lives up to its mission of providing residents with a luxurious and comfortable home with resort-style hospitality promoting wellness, security, longevity, family, joy, and self-worth.

select group of friends, clients and colleagues of the Emerald Grande gathered to witness the reveal of the newly renovated ballroom at the Destin resort on March 31. Upon arrival, guests were greeted by a beautifully redesigned lobby and bar featuring a locally painted mural. Within the ballroom itself, newly upgraded features included furnishings in the colorscheme of cream and gold, and a brand-new sound system and projection screen that wowed the crowd. “We wanted to make everything a little bit more modern and offer a blank canvas for our brides coming in so they can bring any vision they would like to our ballroom,” said Emily Owen, Emerald Grande Director of Catering and Sales. “We are one of the only venues in Destin with sweeping windows viewing the water, so we really wanted to emphasize that by adding mirrored walls. We are really excited about the renovation.” As the evening event continued, Emerald Grande CEO Peter Bos addressed the group, thanking the arduous work of his team and inviting the attending wedding vendors to take the vision of the new ballroom forward to their clients. “This is a one-of-a-kind view in Destin,” said Bos. “This view of the Destin Harbor and the Gulf of Mexico from the ballroom is worthy of that once-in-a-lifetime event.”

Chasing Cobia T

story by Anna Stockton

his is an exciting time of the year on the Florida Panhandle. The temperature is warming up, the spring breakers have come and gone, and the Cobia are migrating. For fisherman, it’s the most wonderful time of the year for their favorite game fish, the Rachycentron canadum, AKA Cobia. See those fishermen in the tower? They are chasing COBIA! Cobia can be recognized by their black or dark brown scales with lighter stripes going down their sides and on their underbelly. Their head is wide and flat with a protruding lower jaw and due to their larger pectoral fin, can sometimes be mistaken for a shark. Although adults can reach lengths of six feet and up to 150 pounds, the average Cobia is around three and a half feet long. While they’ve been found in frigid waters all the way to Nova Scotia, Cobias are more abundant in sub-tropical and tropical waters, including the Gulf of Mexico. They’re open water fish but can often be found both off-shore and in-shore, even in mangroves as well as around coral reefs. Unlike many other fish, these curious Cobias are drawn to noise and activity and can often be found around the pilings of piers, under boats, and occasionally they even cruise around under sea turtles. They’re known to be aggressive feeders and chow down on crab and other crustaceans, squid, fish, eel, and even some rays -- although they’re not above scavenging the leftovers from the meals of sharks and other larger predators. Because of Cobia’s desire to be a part of the party crowd and position themselves under and around boats, they’re fairly easy targets for fishing. They’re known for being good game fish and exciting to catch as they make you work for them. Live bait is best to catch these lively fish, especially using their favorite snacks -- crab and eel. Of course, there are size regulations for

26-27 Coastal Cuisine - cobia Destin.indd 1

catching Cobia to allow the species to thrive. While it varies from state to federal waters, the minimum fork length is between 33 and 36 inches, the fork length is measured from the tip of the jaw or snout, with a closed mouth, to center of the fork in the tail. If you’re able to successfully catch one of these feisty fish, they’re good eatin’. Cobia is known for its tasty meat with a fresh and buttery flavor. The texture is firm, like swordfish but has the oil content more like salmon, making it moist. Cobia meat Is also extremely healthy with little fat, high protein, and is full of potassium, vitamin B, and those omega 3 fatty acids that keep our bodies healthy and happy. High mercury levels are sometimes found in these fish so they should be cleaned and put on ice to prevent bacteria growth, otherwise they’re a safe, healthy, and tasty fish for all to enjoy. Due to their texture, Cobia can be prepared in many ways. Whether you decide to bake, sauté, fry, smoke, broil, or even grill these fish, you’ll be getting a highquality fish full of fight and flavor.

he beautiful surroundings of Baytowne Wharf were the setting for the Walton Area Chamber’s April 6 Power of Business Luncheon. Sponsored by CHELCO, the luncheon featured a finely prepared meal paired with the usual casual conversation and networking opportunities. However, this luncheon came with a twist. Opening the formal part of the luncheon with an invocation followed by the Pledge of Allegiance, Chamber President and CEO, Megan Harrison, highlighted some of the Chamber’s activities including the new insurance initiative and the REACH program; additionally, Megan also welcomed 10 new members to the Chamber. Luncheon sponsor, CHELCO, showed how they are “committed to the community” by describing several school initiatives. Ranging from scholarships to teacher assistance programs, CHELCO takes pride in serving it’s members by supporting education across the Panhandle. The main story of the luncheon was the mock Shark Tank where area students “pitched” their businesses to the “sharks.” One of the companies was represented by Zoe Grange. Zoe’s group was there to pitch the “GMI Shoe.” “Our shoe detects metals and can be used to survey. It also can be used to detect underground wildlife.” Another group was led by Mercer Magruder, a South Walton High School sophomore focused on fitness. “We are helping our community build a healthier lifestyle with our Wavefitness app.” Power of Business Luncheons always bring something new to the community. IF you would like to attend the next luncheon, contact the Walton Area Chamber at 850-267-0683.

With six different age groups from crawlers all the way up to age 12, every child had a chance to get candy-fi lled eggs. Egg hunts were held under a pavilion for the infants and on the baseball fields for the older children. Thousands of eggs were

scattered throughout each age-group’s area and when the whistle blew, the children rushed to collect as many eggs as possible. In addition to the egg hunt, the Easter Bunny made an appearance along with Miss Destin 2022, Ella Kathryn Campbell. The pair wandered the Morgan Sports Complex taking photos with children and their families and wishing everyone a happy Easter weekend.

ANIMAL HOUSE T

story by Anna Stockton

hings are getting wild with home style trends these days. With the animal inspired style craze in full swing, you can bring the wild outdoors into your home with a new spin on classic décor.

Lamps are often a subtle part of your décor, not necessarily noteworthy but completely functional. Well, lamps are boring no more thanks to this animal-focused craze. Whether you’re a bird, elephant, dog, fish, or even a llama lover, there’s a lamp that captures not only your personality but also the eyes of your guests. These lamps range from muted to over the top, depending on your taste and with classic colors like gold and silver to go with your already fabulous color scheme. One strategically placed animal lamp will not only be an interesting conversation piece but will also keep you on point with current trends in your home. Fabrics are another great way to keep up with different trends. The versatility of fabric allows you to make anything from accent pillows to re-covering your classic wingback chairs and everything in between, all without the commitment of redecorating when your style preference or trends change. Animal inspired fabrics can keep you on point and with so many color schemes to choose from, it can easily be incorporated into your décor. An ottoman with an animal print can jazz up your neutral toned sofa, an accent chair with a print of a tiger or even sea life, or sofa pillows with an animal print can add pizzazz and give your living room décor a polished look. The bedroom is another place you can show your wild side -- easy now, this article is about your décor. Throw pillows and accent chairs work just as well in other parts of the house as they do in the living spaces. Just place some flamingo print throw pillows on the bed or add a tropical bird print bench in your room and watch the space come alive. Smaller accessories that follow this trend are another way to freshen up your home. Animal inspired barware makes a statement of functionality, uniqueness, and style. This trend can extend to animal figurines, book ends, and even planters. And what trendy animalistic home would be complete without some on-point, wild, wall art. Whether it be light and fun like a leopard lounging on a settee or something more natural like a wolf or moose -- wall art makes a statement and is a fun way to keep up with this trend. Whether you decide to go all out with this design craze or add small animal inspired changes to your décor, it’s a great way to add interesting touches to liven up and bring out the wild side of your home.

he 3rd annual Outdoor Adventure Expo was held at the Destin Commons over the weekend of April 2 and 3. This year, in addition to boats and their accessories, vendors included other aspects of outdoor entertainment. “What’s unique about the Outdoor Adventure Expo, is that it’s a true outdoor show, not just a boat show,” said Todd Royall of Legendary Marine. “It’s everything from electric bikes to skateboards, paddleboards, even mosquito control.” Royall said that out of 35 vendors at the event, only seven were boat dealerships. As visitors wandered the tents, they could enjoy local beer, strum a ukulele, learn about solar energy for their homes, and browse boats and pontoons. Tania Keffer, Rob Harrell & Donna Jensenius

arents and students of Destin High School gathered on the chilly morning of April 9 for the Foolish 5K Run/Walk. This event, organized by the Destin High Athletics Department, carried the theme of “dress like a fool.” Several participants wore their silliest attire to the run, while some just tried to stay warm. The event started before 8 a.m. with coffee and pastries for the volunteers and a bake sale set up by the Destin High School Softball Team. The run began at 8:30 a.m., starting at Destin High on Commons Drive, to Indian Bayou Trail, and back to DHS. BOTE Destin was the title sponsor for this 5K, which is the first of a planned series of annual runs, according to DHS Athletic Director Philip Dorn. “The Destin community has come out in full force to support DHS since its inception,” said Dorn. “With this support, the school has been able to field 22 athletic teams within 8 months of opening… We need to raise funds at the 5K to help us provide facilities, new equipment, new uniforms, and sports medicine care for our DHS Shark student athletes.” While participants ran or walked the 3.1-mile course, food was prepared by Crawfish Billie and Skipper’s Seafood. The after party also included bounce houses, raffles, music games, and more. The top three finishers in each category received medals, and the person with the most foolish attire received an award, as well.

he Cajun spices and tunes were in the air at the 10th Annual Emerald Coast Crimestoppers Crawfish Boil on April 23 at Uptown Station. While volunteers from Okaloosa County Sherrif’s Office and the Fort Walton Beach Police Department served up the crawfish, Dikki Du and the Zydeco Krewe entertained the crowd with soulful tunes. “The crawfish boil fundraiser grew so big, so quickly that we upped our crawfish count from 500 pounds to 1500 pounds,” said Emerald Coast Crimestoppers founding member, Shari Flowers-Bruns. “It is really for a worthy cause when you think about what Crimestoppers has been doing here for 25 years.” Flowers-Bruns said that from the anonymous tips Emerald Coast Crimestoppers have received over the years, police agencies have been able to solve hundreds of local crime cases. She explained that the crawfish boil fundraiser is not only to raise money for the organization, but also to establish trust within the community. “Crimestoppers is not confidential information, it is anonymous. We know it works,” said Flowers-Bruns. For more information or to share a tip with Crimestoppers visit emeraldcoastcrimestoppers.com or call 850-863-TIPS (8477).

ADVENTURE

WHO LET THE

DOGS OUT? story by Anna Stockton

O

ur pets have become a bigger part of our lives than ever before. We take them with us to eat, to have drinks, and to get exercise. We consider them a part of the family and include them in family pictures, activities, and even tell them we love them before we leave the house and give them a time we’ll be back so they don’t worry (okay, maybe that’s just me). We are lucky to live in an area that appreciates our pets as much as we do and provides them ample space to run, play, and just live their best lives. Here are some great places that we have explored with our pets and we encourage you to do the same with yours.

The Village of Baytowne Wharf 9300 Baytowne Wharf Blvd. Miramar Beach, FL

Fred Gannon Rocky Bayou State Park 4281 FL-20 Niceville, FL

Generally, if it’s happenin’ in Sandestin, it’s happenin’ at Baytown Wharf. This area is known as the “heart and soul” of Sandestin with its multiple restaurants and shops, the best part of this “happenin” place is that it is pet friendly! Asking two simple requests from their canine visitors and their owners, have your pet on a leash and clean up your messes, this area embraces their pet-friendly status. This is a great place to take your pup for an afternoon or evening of shopping, food, and fun. There’s always an event going on at The Village of Baytowne Wharf, including concerts, festivals, and charity events. They even hold special events for pets and pet lovers, like the annual Mardi Gras Dog Parade.

Rocky Bayou State Park has an interesting history. Once a World War II gunnery and bomb practice range, this park is now a nature lover’s paradise. With multiple pet-friendly areas to choose from, you and your pup can have a fantastic time exploring. Of course, there are some areas that are off-limits to pets, like the buildings, beaches, and playgrounds. Your pets must be on a leash at all times, but there are plenty of fun places at this park that allow you both to get into nature. There are a few trails available, all with different scenery. The Red Cedar trees and other types of plants are on display as you hike the Red Cedar Trail. The Sand Pine Trail follows the Puddin’ Head stream while the Rocky Bayou Trail takes you by the shoreline of the bayou. If a day trip isn’t enough for you and your four-legged bestie, the campgrounds here are pet friendly too -perfect for a weekend getaway!

Nancy Weidenhamer Dog Park 4100 Indian Bayou Trail Destin, FL

If your dog is anything like mine, the only thing he loves more than dog parks is taunting me as I try and chase him down when it’s time to leave the dog park. Named in memory of its founder, the Nancy Weidenhamer dog park in Destin is a pup’s paradise. It boasts three secure acres of doggy fun with two separate areas so the smaller dogs can have fun without the bigger dogs ruining their small-dog fun. Pups must be on a leash when entering and leaving the dog park but are otherwise free to roam, play, lay, or even chase after that cute doodle. The humans will enjoy the shaded areas and benches while watching their pups play, knowing full-well their furry friend will be exhausted the rest of the day. The park is open from sunrise to sunset and fresh, clean water is available for the dogs as well as poop bags for the owners. This popular pet playtime destination was even given an impressive four and a half bones on BringFido.com for its amenities and overall fun. and bars.

rt admirers wandered in and out of the Mattie Kelly Art Center Galleries in Niceville on April 1 for the annual Arnie Hart Student and Faculty Show. The show this year was a little different. “This year instead of holding a juried show, we are holding a show that illuminates what the students are learning,” said Curator and Art Director J. Wren Supak. “Each row of drawings is one student’s work showcasing their drawing exercises of shading, depth, and perspective.” Supak explained that Arnie Hart was a well-loved pottery professor at then Okaloosa-Walton College from 1966-1999. When Hart passed away suddenly in 1999, his wife Jean set up a scholarship endowment in his memory. Every year, art students from Northwest Florida State College are awarded scholarships through this fund. In addition to the students’ work, Northwest Florida State College faculty members Lesha Porche Denega and Ben Gillham also had work displayed in the disciplines of architectural drawings and photography, respectively.

Interview with

Kathi Heapy Treasurer, ECFF

What is Emerald Coast Fitness Foundation? Emerald Coast Fitness Foundation is a nonprofit corporation formed to support the swimming community by offering safe, affordable facilities for water safety instruction, exercise, and competitive swimming. ECFF operates pools in Fort Walton Beach, Destin, and Crestview. They are open to locals and visitors, offering programs from lap swim and aquacise classes, to family swim time, and lessons for children as young as 6 months and adults of all ages. How did this organization come about? When the YMCA, which operated pools in Fort Walton Beach and Destin, went bankrupt in 2014, it closed its pools overnight, leaving the swim community at a total loss. Young athletes lost their practice and competition facilities, countless children lost an opportunity to learn water safety, and those who relied on the pools for exercise and fellowship were stranded. In January 2015, two swim families formed a foundation with the initial goal of restoring the Fort Walton Beach pool. The indoor six-lane, 25-yard pool had suffered years of neglect, and following the closure, the deterioration accelerated. The couples, Kathi and Gary Heapy and Pam and Bruce Braseth, supported by the swim community, led the charge to raise $250,000 in donations of time, money, and materials and began the work of restoring the pool. In December of 2015, the doors reopened. Less than two years later, they accomplished the same thing at the Aquatic Center in Destin,

another former YMCA facility, which reopened in August 2017. In 2021, the foundation took over operation of the ROC Pool in Crestview, which had been run by Central Baptist Church, the owner of the pool. This past school year, Crestview High School, Davidson Middle School, and Shoal River Middle School were able to offer swimming as a sport for the first time ever. What impact does Emerald Coast Fitness Foundation have on the community? In an area defined by water, learning to be safe in the water is vital. The foundation, which has no paid administrative staff, offers year-round swimming lessons, all of which are based on water safety principles. We have taught thousands of children and adults to swim since 2015 and our numbers continue to grow each year. But our impact on the community is far greater than that important primary mission of water safety. Our pools, operated by a staff of hardworking lifeguards and instructors, give community members a place to work out. Stop by our pools and you might see families playing together in the water, adults swimming laps, military personnel training for their jobs, young swimmers training for the next competition, and older individuals, or others with health challenges, walking, jogging, stretching or floating in an environment that is more forgiving of joint problems. We recently started a weekly water polo game at our Destin facility and all our facilities are available for rental.

What are some future goals? Our number one goal is to have zero local drowning deaths. Okaloosa County has, at last count, 20 competitive swim teams. This population, in addition to our large military population, can support a 50-meter indoor pool in Okaloosa County. Local divers are at a competitive disadvantage driving to Pensacola or Panama City to practice and compete in their sport. The county needs a diving well. North Okaloosa County deserves an indoor competitive swimming facility.

GI V E | C A R E | S H A R E

What events does your organization host? Swimming competitions for local high school, middle school, club teams, summer league teams, and master’s swimmers are all taking place. Daily, we are open for lap swim, aquacise classes, family swim sessions, lessons, pool rentals, and military training. On May 14, the first annual Sip n’ Splash will be held at the Aquatic Center in Destin. An evening of fine dining and entertainment, the event is a fundraiser for all three facilities. On May 15, International Water Safety Day, a free community swim lesson will be held at our pools. Open to the public for no charge, the event begins at 2 p.m. and includes free water safety instruction. The lesson, which is expected to draw hundreds of participants, is open for children (as young as 6 months) and adults. You must register to participate. Sign-up sheets are posted at each pool or call 850-863-7946 and ask for Wendy. How did you get involved with Emerald Coast Fitness Foundation? My husband, Gary, and I both swam competitively in high school and collegiately and continue to swim in ECFF pools. Our children were involved in the sport and even after they graduated from local schools, we continued to coach and officiate at local sporting events. It’s a lifelong passion of ours. What’s your favorite thing about being involved with the organization? Knowing that through the hard work of our staff and volunteers, we have been able to keep swimming alive in local schools and teach thousands of children and adults how to enjoy the water safely. Swimming has been such a passion for us, and we couldn’t accept future generations not having safe places to play and exercise. What would you like our readers to know about Emerald Coast Fitness Foundation? All the money raised through program fees goes back into the facilities. We have no paid administrative or executive staff. I volunteer all my time, as do our advisory board members. We do everything for our love of swimming and our desire to extend that to our communities, which would have no public swimming facilities without ECFF. We are proud of giving swimmers of all ages places to further their sport, improve their health, and learn to be safe in the water. Swimming is a lifelong activity and our patrons, who range in age from infancy through 90-plus enjoy the facilities. How can someone get involved and/or support your nonprofit? • Become a business sponsor: Your donation of $1,000 will be recognized on our electronic sign in Fort Walton Beach and on a sign placed at the pool of your choice. • Become a member of one, two, or all three of our pools. • We are looking for dynamic individuals to serve on our board of directors and we need lifeguards and instructors. • Make a tax-deductible donation to the Emerald Coast Fitness Foundation. We are a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation. Donations may be directed to specific uses or general expenses. We have some opportunities available for large charitable donations that can support capital expenditures, signage, and equipment. 56

horeline Church was the host for the Destin Chamber of Commerce April 8 Business Before Hours. Pastor David Butler opened the event with prayer and was followed by Chair Elect Jason Belcher. Jason kept attendees on their toes as he joked and introduced Chamber staff, board, and ambassadors. April’s non-profit spotlight was Florida Small Business Development Center at University of West Florida. Represented by Diane Jernigan and Adam McCloskey, Diane stated, “As Florida’s primary provider for small business assistance, we do research and assist in writing business and marketing plans.” The sponsor presentation was given by HCA Florida Fort Walton-Destin Hospital’s CEO, Zach McCluskey. Explaining that the name represented a transition that, “Brought together 450 sites of care throughout the state under one umbrella... for the care and improvement of human life.” Other presentations included awarding the Business Person of the Month to Neko Stubblefield of Eglin Federal Credit Union. State Representative Patt Maney outlined some of the funding that was supporting projects in Okaloosa County. Destin Mayor Gary Jarvis outlined key achievements of the last 4 years stating that future big plans and improvements will make Destin a place where people walk along the harbor and want to stay. In addition to a hearty breakfast, Business Before Hours meetings offer both educational and networking opportunities. Mark your calendar for the May 13 meeting at Henderson Beach State Park.

he Destin Chamber’s headquarters hosted the Ladies Who Launch - Powerhouse Women Series on April 20. Featuring highly impactful women from the area, the series offers the Chamber’s female members a platform for strategic networking and relationship building, while training, motivating, and inspiring those members. April’s speaker was Attorney Michelle Anchors of AnchorsGordon. Michelle and her family have been leaders in the Fort Walton Beach and Destin communities for generations. In addition to serving as pro bono counsel to a number of local non-profit organizations, Michelle is personally and actively involved with many organizations and issues. It is from this vast experience that Michelle spoke on the “GPS of her life.” She also covered the resiliency of people. Whether it’s a military family relocating or bouncing back from one of life’s struggles, Michelle’s presentation offered hope and reminded everyone that while a bio can be stellar, the reality of life is that sometimes you have to scratch and claw and that doesn’t show up in your bio. The Ladies Who Launch Powerhouse Women Series is held monthly. To register for the next meeting contact the Destin Chamber.

Michael Jackson

E Santana Jackson

photos & story Harley S. Sampson, Jr.

asing into summer with a blast from the past, the Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation kicked off the Concerts in the Village on April 21 with Michael Jackson LIVE. Santana Jackson of MJ Live, is one of the world’s top performing Michael Jackson tribute artists. Playing regularly in Las Vegas, Santana and the MJ Live crew thrilled the Destin crowd with not only a Jackson Five tribute, but also hits such as “Smooth Criminal” and “Thriller”. Locals and visitors alike danced and sang along for several hours. The Burkette family from Niceville arrived early to find a place on the Village Green and enjoy a pizza dinner. “Our daughter is a Michael Jackson fan, so combined that with the beautiful weather and we had to attend”, Steve Burkette. Mandy and Ryan Scroggin of Utah were also part of the enthusiastic crowd and Ryan Scroggin explained how they came about finding the series. “We were looking for something to do to celebrate Mandy’s birthday. We saw the concert and said, let’s go.” Held on Thursdays at the Dugas Pavilion and Village Green at the Mattie Kelly Cultural Arts Village in Destin, the 15-event concert series brings in local and national performers. Food trucks offering sandwiches, Dipping Dots, and an assortment of beverages are always on hand for attendees.

I AM DESTIN

Kevin Rosa What is your hometown and how did you end up on the Emerald Coast? Born in Kalamazoo, MI, but raised in Alpharetta, GA, I started my resort sojourn in 1988 after graduating from Georgia State University Hospitality School. First stop Orlando and from there I have worked at hotels and resorts in Louisiana, Florida (again), West Virginia, Georgia, Upstate New York, Florida (again) and ended here on the Emerald Coast by way of Tampa, in April 2020. I started my career with Hilton Hotels and I’m bookending my career with The Hilton Sandestin Beach. We just built our dream home in Cessna Landing... this is home! What is your profession and what led you to choose it? I’m currently the Director of Sales and Marketing for the Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa. I have been in the hospitality industry for 34 years. I knew I wanted to work in the hotel business since I was 16 years old. In 1980 I shadowed my cousin, Jorgen Hansen, General Manager of the Waldorf-Astoria in NYC, and knew right away I wanted to be a Hotelier. What are some of your favorite things about Destin? The beaches, the water... and the fact that we get four seasons here on the Emerald Coast. The unique beauty of our destination makes it a special draw for our visitors. Loblolly Pines, The Gulf, The Bay, and the people are what make our destination special. Florida has five distinct regions and I feel we have a hidden gem up here in The Panhandle Region. Three words that best describe you. Outgoing, Leader, Genuine. Favorite place for to go out? My wife and I love Shunk Gulley in Gulf Place for oysters and margaritas, Don Pedro’s in Santa Rosa Beach for some good Mexican and $4.29 margaritas (there’s a pattern here?) and of course Seagar’s Prime Steaks and Seafood with friends and customers! Can’t forget the best and freshest sushi in town, Hidashi Sushi at The Hilton Sandestin. But nothing can beat McGuire’s and their 10 cent Senate Bean Soup!

What is the one thing you would say you do not go a day without?

70 Iam Destin_Kevin Rosa.indd 1

Having a good belly laugh with my wife, Morag. As newly empty-nesters, we have to make our own fun and instead of an audience of three, it’s just her. Laughing is great for the soul. Finish this statement. I AM Destin because… ...I believe in the destination and to be a part of its growth is inspiring and exciting. We all live in a fantastic community that’s friendly, dedicated to the arts, and most of all, charitable.
