oughness. Intelligence. Unselfishness. Consistency. Teamwork. Success. Improvement. These words describe the University of Pittsburgh basketball program led by head coach Jamie Dixon. Using those ideals, Dixon has established and maintained a “Tradition of Excellence” and “Culture of Success” for Pitt Basketball both on and off the floor. On the floor, Pitt has emerged as a national power. The Panthers rank among the nation’s top-5 programs in winning percentage over the last 12 years and Pitt has claimed more conference titles (six) than any other school in the previous Big East and third-most among Atlantic Coast programs. Player development is a cornerstone for the program as six players have won the Big East Most Improved Player Award since Dixon’s arrival. Off the floor, Dixon has built a program that its fans can be proud of. Pitt is prominent in the community, donating countless hours of service for the greater good. In the classroom, Pitt has graduated 83.3 percent (35 of its last 42) of its studentathletes and consistently achieves top-10 percent NCAA Academic Performance Rate team scores. Beginning his 15th year at Pitt and 11th as its head coach, Dixon has stockpiled numerous coaching milestones and awards: • Set the all-time NCAA Division I record for most wins after eight seasons as a head coach in 2011 with 216 victories. He also ranks fourth all-time in wins after 10 seasons as a head coach (262 wins), third following nine seasons (238), tied the record for most

wins after seven years in 2010 (188) and set the six-year mark in 2009 (163). • Earned four college basketball National Coach of the Year honors: 2011 Sporting News, 2010 Jim Phelan Award, 2010 USA Basketball and 2009 Naismith. • Guided Pitt to three Big East Championships including two outright Big East regular season titles (2003-04 and 2010-11) and one tournament championship (2008). The recent 2011 outright regular season title came in a league that placed an all-time record 11 teams in the NCAA Tournament. • Led Pitt to its first two No. 1 seeds upon entering the NCAA Tournament (2009 and 2011). • Became the only coach in NCAA Division I basketball to guide his team to the NCAA Tournament and win at least one game in each tournament over a six-year span (2006-11). • Guided Pitt to its first-ever NCAA Regional Final (64team tournament) and Elite Eight appearance, a school-best 31-5 record, the school’s first-ever No. 1 national ranking and the program’s first-ever No. 1 seed upon entering the NCAA Tournament in 2008-09. • Led the USA Basketball Under-19 Team to the 2009 FIBA World Championship Gold Medal and 9-0 record after inheriting an overhauled roster and assuming head coaching duties a month before the competition began. • Concluded the 2012-13 season and final in the league as the winningest coach in Big East history with a current .658 winning percentage in league games (127-66), while surpassing several legendary coaches including John Thompson, Jim Calhoun, Jim

LL

Boeheim, Rick Pitino and Lou Carnesseca. • Became the only coach in school history to lead Pitt to its first two 30-win seasons, two No. 1 seeds upon entering the NCAA Tournament, nine consecutive 20-win seasons, eight straight 10-plus win Big East regular seasons and eight straight NCAA Tournaments (2004-11). • Directed Pitt to three NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearances (2004, 2007 and 2009). • Named Madison Square Garden’s College Basketball “Coach of the Decade” (2000-10). • Guided Pitt to its second all-time Big East Championship title in 2008. The Panthers became just the second squad in league history to capture the crown after winning four games. • Led Pitt to the Big East Championship Final four times. • Is one of only nine coaches in NCAA Division I history to win over 100 games during the first four seasons of a coaching career. • Reached both 100 wins and 200 wins at Pitt faster than any other head coach in school history. Dixon needed only 126 games to reach the 100-win milestone. Only 14 coaches in the history of college basketball reached 100 career victories faster than Dixon. His 200 victories were accomplished in only 255 total contests. He is one of only 13 coaches in NCAA Division I history to reach 200 victories in 255 games or less. • Amassed a spectacular 10-year 115-57 Big East regular-season record. • Tallied a 164-22 home record in his first 10 seasons. • Became the first rookie head coach in Big East history to both guide his team to the league’s regular season title and earn Big East Coach of the Year honors in 2003-04. Dixon earned those accolades after leading the Panthers to the Big East regular season title and a school-record 31 wins, which ranks as the third highest total in NCAA Division I history for a firstyear head coach. Dixon also led Pitt on an 18-game win streak to begin the season, a streak which ranks as the third-best start for a rookie head coach in NCAA Division I history. • Guided Pitt to two consecutive top-10 rankings in the NCAA’s Academic Performance Ratings in 2011-12 and 2010-11, one of only two Big East schools to achieve that honor.

uzie McConnell-Serio, one of the most decorated players in the history of women’s basketball, was named the head women’s basketball coach at the University of Pittsburgh on April 12, 2013. A member of the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame and a two-time Olympic medalist as a player, McConnellSerio arrived at Pitt following an impressive six-year tenure at neighboring Duquesne. She never suffered a losing season (2007-13) and led the Dukes to five consecutive 20-win campaigns for the first time in the program’s history. From 2003-06, she was the head coach of the WNBA’s Minnesota Lynx. Inheriting a team that finished 10-22 the previous campaign, she immediately turned the franchise around by guiding the Lynx to a single-

season record 18 victories and their first-ever playoff berth. The following year, McConnell-Serio piloted Minnesota back to the playoffs, earning a franchise-best No. 3 seed in the Western Conference and 2004 WNBA Coach of the Year honors. Prior to her WNBA coaching tenure, McConnellSerio coached at nearby Oakland Catholic High School (1990-2003). She firmly established its girls’ basketball program as a perennial Pennsylvania power, leading the Eagles to three PIAA Class AAAA championships and finishing as the state runner-up twice. McConnell-Serio’s own scholastic basketball career began here in Western Pennsylvania, where she was a Parade All-American and four-year starter at Seton-La Salle High School. As a senior she led the Lady Rebels to a 35-1 record and the PIAA championship. She also led the softball team to the WPIAL championship as a .500 hitter and was selected the Female Athlete of the Year by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. McConnell-Serio went on to star at Penn State (198488) and set NCAA Division I records for career assists (1,307), assists in a season (355) and single-season assists per game (11.8) – two of those records still stand today. She became the first player in program history to be named a first team All-American and was also a four-time All-Atlantic 10 honoree. McConnell-Serio was the 1988

recipient of the Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award, presented to the nation’s best senior player under 5-foot-8. McConnell-Serio was the point guard for two Olympic teams, winning a gold medal at the 1988 Games in Seoul and a bronze in the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. McConnell-Serio was drafted in the second round (16th overall pick) by the Cleveland Rockers in the 1998 WNBA Draft and played three decorated seasons. In her initial campaign she was honored as the WNBA Newcomer of the Year and selected first team All-WNBA. McConnell-Serio was selected the first Dapper Dan Sportswoman of the Year in 1999, repeating the honor in 2010. Sports Illustrated named McConnell-Serio the best 5-foot-4 basketball player - male or female - of all-time. She additionally was named to the USA Today All-Time Women’s Basketball Team. McConnell-Serio and her husband Pete are the parents of four children: Peter, Jordan, Mandi and Madison.

23 ASHLEE ANDERSON 5-9 ■ Senior (RS) ■ Guard Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young Magnet

ABOUT ASHLEE • Nicknamed Snaxs in high school by her coach’s husband. She would bring her lunch to practice every day and eat any food she had left after practice ended. Eventually her entire school, teammates, friends, peers and parents began calling her “Snaxs” and it soon became her new identity. • Ashlee’s grandmother used to refer to her as “Baby Rodman”, because her playing skills reminded her of NBA star Dennis Rodman. • Sister, Alexandria, runs track professionally for Nike. She was a 17-time All-American at University of Texas. Also a three-time Big 12 Champion (Indoor 60-meter dash, 4x100-meter relay, Outdoor 100-meter dash) and 19-time All-Big 12. • Ashlee broke her finger prior to the 2009-10 season and in doing so found out, she only has one tendon in her pinky. Each finger – normally – has two flexor tendons (then thumb has one). This is an extremely rare condition. • Her great grandmother, Mary Coley, is in the National Smithsonian for all her duties and accomplishments as a midwife in Georgia and surrounding areas. • Her great aunt, June Jackson, was White House organist/ pianist for the White House. • Studied abroad in London during the summer of 2012. • Active member of the Pitt SAAC (Student Athlete Advisory Council). • Earned her undergraduate degree in communications and is pursuing a second degree in media and professional communications.

ACC: TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE Consistency. It is the mark of true excellence in any endeavor. However, in today’s intercollegiate athletics, competition has become so balanced and so competitive that it is virtually impossible to maintain a high level of consistency. Yet the Atlantic Coast Conference has defied the odds. Now, in its 61st year of competition, the ACC has long enjoyed the reputation as one of the strongest and most competitive intercollegiate conferences in the nation. And that is not mere conjecture, the numbers support it. Since the league’s inception in 1953, ACC schools have captured 131 NCAA championships, including 69 in women’s competition and 62 in men’s. In addition, NCAA individual titles have gone to ACC studentathletes 150 times in men’s competition and 105 times in women’s action. Given the ACC’s strong history and the strengthening of its ranks with the additions of Notre Dame, Pitt and Syracuse in 2013, followed by Louisville in 2014, those numbers – and the league’s long standing tradition of excellence– appear destined to only grow greater in the years ahead. ACC POINTS OF PRIDE

• The Atlantic Coast Conference was founded on May 8, 1953, at the Sedgefield Inn near Greensboro, N.C. with seven charter members - Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, NC State, South Carolina and Wake Forest - drawing up the conference by-laws. On December 4, 1953, conference officials met again at Sedgefield and officially admitted the University of Virginia as the league’s eighth member. The first, and only, withdrawal of a school from the ACC came on June 30, 1971 when the University of South Carolina tendered its resignation. The ACC operated with seven members until April 3, 1978 when the Georgia Institute of Technology was admitted. The ACC expanded to nine members on July 1, 1991, with the addition of Florida State University. The conference then expanded to 11 members on July 1, 2004, with the addition of the University of Miami and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. On October 17, 2003, Boston College accepted an invitation to become the league’s 12th member starting with the 2005-06 academic year. On September 18, 2011, the Atlantic Coast Conference Council of Presidents unanimously voted to accept the University of Pittsburgh and Syracuse University as new members. Their inclusion will begin by July 1, 2013.

• Since the league’s inception in 1953, ACC schools have captured 127 NCAA championships, including 67 in women’s competition and 60 in men’s. In addition, NCAA individual titles have gone to ACC student-athletes 145 times in men’s competition and 104 times in women’s action. • In the 2011-12 season, four NCAA titles were captured by ACC teams, with championships from Virginia (Women’s Rowing), North Carolina (Men’s Soccer), Maryland (Field Hockey) and Boston College (Men’s Ice Hockey). • In the latest “Best Colleges” rankings released by US News & World Report, the ACC leads the way among BCS automatic-qualifying conferences, with a combined average ranking of 49.2. The ACC placed seven schools in the Top 38, three more than any other conference. The ACC is the only conference to have every school ranked in the Top 120 and have at least one school in the Top 10 every year since 2006. • A leader among the BCS conferences for APR and GSR, league teams are among the high percentage of athletic teams at Division I colleges and universities that meet standards and excel academically. In addition, the ACC leads all BCS automatic-qualifying conferences in number of teams above the average score in football and baseball. 2011 marks the fifth straight year that the ACC has had at least four women’s basketball programs score 100, making it the only BCS automatic-qualifying conference to do so. • Since its inception in 1981, the institutions of the ACC have won the most AFCA Academic Achievement Awards with 20 (including ties) (Duke – 12, Virginia – 2, Boston College – 4, Wake Forest – 1, Miami – 1). • Some of the most influential people in world history have been awarded the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship to pursue post-graduate education at Oxford University in England. The oldest international fellowships have been earned by a few extraordinary ACC student-athletes. Some of the names on this list include Maryland basketball player Tom McMillen, Florida State football player Myron Rolle, Duke tennis player Julia Parker Goyer and Florida State track and field student-athlete Garrett Johnson. • The ACCIAC is a special commitment of the 12 university presidents and the conference office to enhance academic excellence. Funded by a portion of the revenues from the Dr Pepper ACC Football Championship Game,

the ACCIAC works to advance the quality of education for all undergraduate students by sharing academic and administrative resources and by hosting conferences that bring together experts from all our campuses. • ACC Postgraduate Scholarships: The WeaverJames-Corrigan and Jim and Pat Thacker scholarships are awarded to selected student-athletes--three from each league institution--who intend to pursue a graduate degree following completion of their undergraduate requirements. Each recipient receives $5,000 to contribute to their graduate education. Each recipient has performed with distinction in both the classroom and in his/her respective sport, while also demonstrating exemplary conduct in the community. In addition, four student-athletes who intend to compete at the Olympic or professional level receive Weaver-James-Corrigan Honorary Awards in recognition of their outstanding performance in both athletic competition and the classroom throughout their collegiate careers. • Honda Award Winners are selected in each of the 12 NCAA-sanctioned sports by voting among 1,000 NCAA member schools and the board of directors of the Collegiate Women Sports Awards Program. Each woman is selected not only for her superior athletic skills, but also for her leadership abilities, academic excellence and eagerness to participate in community service. The ACC has had 51 (or 57, if counting before schools were members) student-athletes earn the top award in their respective sport. • In 2012-13, the ACC placed four schools in the Top 20 of the final Division I Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Standings: North Carolina at No. 8, Florida State at No 11, Duke at No. 12 and Virginia at No. 20. This marked the 12th consecutive year that the ACC placed four or more teams among the Top 30.

ACC CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Conference currently conducts championship competition in 25 sports – 12 for men and 13 for women. The first ACC championship was held in swimming on February 25, 1954. The conference did not conduct championships in cross country, wrestling or tennis during the first year. The 12 sports for men include football, cross country, soccer, basketball, swimming & diving, indoor and outdoor track & field, wrestling, baseball, tennis, golf and lacrosse. Fencing, which was started in 1971, was discontinued in 1981. Women’s sports were initiated in 1977 with the first championship meet being held in tennis at Wake Forest University. Championships for women are currently conducted in cross country, volleyball, field hockey, soccer, basketball, swimming & diving, indoor and outdoor track &

field, tennis, golf, lacrosse, softball and rowing.

ACC HISTORY

The Atlantic Coast Conference was founded on May 8, 1953, at the Sedgefield Inn near Greensboro, N.C., with seven charter members - Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina and Wake Forest - drawing up the conference by-laws. The withdrawal of seven schools from the Southern Conference came early on the morning of May 8, 1953, during the Southern Conference’s annual spring meeting. On June 14, 1953, the seven members met in Raleigh, N.C., where a set of bylaws was adopted and the name became officially the Atlantic Coast Conference. Suggestions from fans for the name of the new conference appeared in the region’s newspapers prior to the meeting in Raleigh. Some of the names suggested were: Dixie, Mid South, Mid Atlantic, East Coast, Seaboard, Colonial, Tobacco, Blue-Gray, Piedmont, Southern Seven and the Shoreline. Duke’s Eddie Cameron recommended that the name of the conference be the Atlantic Coast Conference, and the motion was passed unanimously. The meeting concluded with each member institution assessed $200.00 to pay for conference expenses. On December 4, 1953, conference officials met again at Sedgefield and officially admitted the University of Virginia as the league’s eighth member. The first, and only, withdrawal of a school from the ACC came on June 30, 1971, when the University of South Carolina tendered its resignation. The ACC operated with seven members until April 3, 1978, when the Georgia Institute of Technology was admitted. The Atlanta school had withdrawn from the Southeastern Conference in January of 1964. On October 17, 2003, Boston College accepted an invitation to become the league’s 12th member starting July 1, 2005.On September 18, 2011, the ACC extended formal invitations to Pitt and Syracuse. The league announced it had accepted Notre Dame as a new member (all sports except for football) on September 12, 2012. The ACC officially grew to 15 members on July 1, 2013 as Pitt, Syracuse and Notre Dame officially entered the league amidst a huge celebration in New York City. On November 28, 2012, the ACC announced the acceptance of the University of Louisville with an official entry date of July 1, 2014.

COMMISSIONER’S FORUM WITH

ACC COMMSSIONER JOHN SWOFFORD

A

s we look ahead to our 61st season, and first as a 15 member league, we look forward with a great deal of anticipation. As I’ve said before, the composition of the long term membership of the ACC has never been stronger. Geographically, we are moving forward as a true Atlantic Coast Conference with membership spanning the entire Eastern seaboard and even into the Midwest with the addition of Notre Dame and soon Louisville. Just within our footprint, the ACC will have the most television households and the highest population of any conference nationally. And it is also projected that by 2030, 55 percent of the U.S. population will lie within the northeast and southern states, prime ACC territory. The combination of our marketplace opportunities, along with the population numbers both current and projected, give this league enormous potential in both

the near and the distant future. As it relates to an ACC channel, we continue to work through the process of strategically evaluating whether a channel makes sense for our league and for our television partner. The discussions with ESPN are ongoing, and our focus of making sure ACC content continues to be available any time, any place, and anywhere remains a priority. Now, let’s talk about ACC basketball and the season ahead. This year we welcome coaches Mike Bray of Notre Dame, Jamie Dixon of Pitt and Jim Boeheim of Syracuse. Obviously none of them are strangers to college basketball success. And when you combine the accomplishments of all 15 league coaches, the accolades are staggering. And more than any other collection of conference coaches. Here are just a few: Over 5,600 career wins, combined winning percentage of 67 percent; seven national titles; 23 Final Four appearances, and 15 National Championship game appearances. This group also records a winning percentage of 65 percent in NCAA Tournament play, 66 Sweet 16 appearances, 33 regional final appearances; 11 have made at least one Sweet 16 appearance, and six have appeared in a regional final. When you look at the winningest programs in NCAA history, three of the top 5, four of the Top 10, and five of the Top 25, are now ACC members. I’d also like to take the opportunity to acknowledge that three of the five active Division I coaches in the Naismith Hall of Fame are at the helm of ACC programs, and Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski, North Carolina’s Roy Williams and Syracuse’s Jim Boeheim. As many of you and our coaches have indicated, this may be the strongest collection of basketball programs

ever assembled in one conference. And that is exciting. As I have said, the competition within the league will be brutal, and obviously I mean that in a very positive sense. I know that I’m looking forward to it and it should be a lot of fun for fans, players, and those of you that are covering ACC basketball alike. From a television perspective, the 2013 14 schedule features all time highs in the number of televised games and national appearances for our league. As has been the case in recent years, every ACC controlled basketball game will be available to our fans nationwide on one platform or another. Through our relationship with ESPN, we have the ability to maximize the platforms for every fan to see ACC basketball. From traditional television to progressive digital and mobile platforms like ESPN3 and WatchESPN, ACC content is truly available everywhere. In addition to ESPN, the ACC Network through Raycom continues to be broader than ever before, with a reach of over 68 million households and no geographic parameters on the distribution. The ACC Network is now in 16 of the top 20 major markets, including New York, L.A., Chicago, Philadelphia, Seattle, Phoenix, Minneapolis, Denver, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Indianapolis Kansas City and Salt Lake City. Following the regular season, the 2014 ACC

basketball tournament will be televised nationally by ESPN, as well as on all of our syndicated ACC Network channels. And once again, this year, there will be no blackouts on either platform. The upcoming regular season obviously will provide our fans with ACC basketball appointment viewing, as well. For a third year in a row, ten of ESPNU’s broadcasts will be aired exclusively on the ACC Sunday night basketball package, which is preceded by a half hour ACC Sunday night pregame show. This year’s ACC Sunday night package tips off on Sunday, January 5th, with the North Carolina at Wake Forest game. In addition to Sunday nights, ACC basketball is making its debut as part of ESPN’s Big Monday, which will feature weekly Monday night league games from January 13 to March 3 starting at 7:00 PM each Monday evening. The ever popular College Game Day will also make two stops on ACC campuses during its eight week run. The first will be on Saturday, February 1, for the Duke at Syracuse game, and the second will take place on Saturday, March 8, when North Carolina and Duke play in Cameron on the final weekend of the season. This March, all of our teams will again travel to Greensboro for the 61st annual tournament. It will be the 25th time the event has been held at the Greensboro

ACC COMMSSIONER JOHN SWOFFORD Coliseum, which has hosted the tournament more than any other venue. Our tournament format will continue to feature all league members, and we’ll begin with three games on Wednesday, followed by four on Thursday and Friday, two on Saturday, and the Championship Game on Sunday afternoon. The top four seeds will continue to receive byes into Friday’s quarterfinal round.

that’s you know, our history has been a very proud one from a basketball standpoint, and I think over the years, this league has arguably year in and year out been as good as anybody on a consistent basis. The schools we have added most recently and going back a few years and with Louisville coming next year, they are coming from a great conference, as well, from a basketball standpoint. So we are bringing some terrific programs with great history and tradition from an Since you were just talking about the ACC excellent conference and adding that to the great history tournament, when you go to Greensboro and tradition and programs that are already a part of the this year and you do expand to three games and Atlantic Coast Conference. I think that’s what’s brought Wednesday like you talked about, and the new us to this point of strength. teams, how do you expect that’s going to impact that tournament as far as interest, fan interest, people How likely is it that the ACC men’s basketball coming? What are you looking for this coming year? tournament will eventually move to New York JOHN SWOFFORD: Well, obviously this will be the City, and if it does, do you still envision a scenario first time that we’ve done that. And we’ve looked at where it rotates back to Greensboro? some other conferences that have put on tournaments JOHN SWOFFORD: I wouldn’t want to handicap that, of this size and what they have learned from what they but I think you have to consider that with our footprint now, are doing and have done. We are in the process of that New York City is a prominent part of our footprint. deciding exactly how Wednesday will be handled. And And while I don’t know that any college particularly it may be, we haven’t finalized that yet, and we will in owns New York City, I think there’s great interest there the reasonably near future come out with how we are in college basketball. I think there’s great interest in going to ticket that particular day and how we are going and respect for the Atlantic Coast Conference and the to address that particular day, because it is different basketball programs that are in our conference. It’s the than anything we’ve had before. But with the depth of media capital of the world. It’s a great college basketball the tournament and the depth that we have with the 15 city. So there’s certainly some logic to the tournament teams we have in this league right now, that will be some potentially being in the New York market at some point good basketball on Wednesday. But we’ve got to make in time. Some of that, if we were to be in New York, some decisions as to how we ticket it and so forth, and is based on venue availability and timing of that venue we are in the process of addressing that now. The tournament really was built in the state of is coordinating that, and we have actually put together North Carolina in the early years and has enjoyed great a sub committee of representatives from our schools to success there every time that it’s been played there, take a look at that in terms of the best way to go about whether it’s in Greensboro or whether it’s in Charlotte or that additional day of the tournament. even in the days when it was in Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh when it started. So certainly our league, former You mentioned earlier about how people are older members and newer members have great respect talking about this collection of teams as the for that, as well. And I think the question you’re asking best ever. After the way the national kind of agenda really leads to this fact: With our footprint, and the quality has gone the last couple years, the ACC is down; it’s of institutions and programs that we have, it just gives us slipping. How gratifying is it to have people look at opportunities in front of us that we haven’t had in the past. And that includes potentially being in some markets with the ACC basketball in that way again? JOHN SWOFFORD: Well, it’s very gratifying. I mean, a tournament that we’ve never been in before.

PITT’S TOP-10 GREATEST

M

Through the years, many of Pitt’s greatest basketball moments have come against current Atlantic Coast Conference schools. Here is a sampling of great Pitt moments against current ACC programs: December 20, 2007 vs. Duke

Sam Clancy

December 20, 2007

Levance Fields drains a stepback 3-pointer with 4.7 seconds left in overtime to defeat Duke 65-64 in the Aeropostale Classic at New York’s Madison Square Garden. Fields dedicates the shot to his friend and teammate Mike Cook, who tore his ACL during the first minute of overtime. DeJuan Blair grabs 20 rebounds for the Pitt effort.

February 10, 1979

March 1, 2008

In one of the greatest come-from-behind victories in NCAA history, Pitt rallies from an 11-point deficit with 3:49 to go to defeat Syracuse at the Carrier Dome, 82-77. Pitt uses a full-court press to turn the game around.

Pitt upsets No. 7 ranked Duke, 71-69, at Cameron Indoor Stadium. With the score tied at 69-69 with 3:05 to go, Duke coach Bill Foster decided to have his team hold onto the ball. With 10 seconds to go, Sam Clancy intercepts a back-door pass intended for Jim Spanarkal from Bob Bender, dribbles the length of the floor, misses a 15-foot jumper, grabs the rebound from Mike Gminski and drops in an easy layup with two seconds left to give Pitt a 71-69 upset win. Pitt’s victory snapped Duke’s 22-game home win streak. The Blue Devils entered the game with a 17-1 record.

Charley Hyatt’s last second basket preserves Pitt’s perfect season and gives Pitt a 24-22 win against Notre Dame. Hyatt scores after receiving a pass from Paul Zehfuss. The victory serves as a catalyst as Pitt wins its first mythical Helms Foundation national title by winning 21 straight games and averaging a then-phenomenal 38 points per game. Coached by the eccentric H.C. “Doc” Carlson, All-America Charley Hyatt and Stan Wroblewski were the nation’s two highest scorers.

December 21, 1957

February 15, 1964

Don Hennon scores a school-record 45 points to lead the Panthers past Duke, 87-84, in double overtime at Fitzgerald Field House. The 45 points remain a school and Fitzgerald Field House record.

February 18, 1928

Brian Generalovich’s layup in the closing seconds gives Pitt a 69-67 home win over Syracuse. The Orangemen roster features Hall of Fame and NBA legend Dave Bing.

MOMENTS VS. THE ACC Brian Generalovich

March 6, 1988

In its biggest triumph of the 1987-88 season, No. 7 Pitt records one of its most significant wins in school history as the Panthers claim their first-ever undisputed Big East Championship with an 85-84 victory over No. 12 Syracuse in the Carrier Dome. Jerome Lane scores a career-high 29 points along with 15 rebounds and Charles Smith sinks two free throws with 0:17 to go to secure the win. Smith scores 25 points in his final home game. Pitt ends the season at 12-4 in the Big East.

January 20, 1934

Pitt defeats Notre Dame, 39-34, at the Pavilion and snaps Notre Dame’s 22-game win streak. Moose Krause starred for that Irish team. Pitt’s Skip Hughes scores seven straight points to key a Panthers comeback.

February 13, 1970

In the highest scoring game in school history, Pitt defeats Syracuse, 127-108, at Fitzgerald Field House as Kent Scott (28 points), Paul O’Gorek (27) and Cleveland Edwards (20) fuel the Panthers.

February 15, 1975

Freshman Mel Bennett’s 22 points and 15 rebounds set up Keith Starr’s game-winning basket Don Hennon

in the final seconds in a win against Virginia, 71-70.

February 14, 1987

Pitt extends its school-record Big East win streak to eight games with a 72-67 double overtime win vs. Boston College. Ranked No. 10 nationally, the Panthers entered overtime without center Charles Smith, who fouled out with 2:37 to go in regulation. The upset-minded Eagles lead 61-58 with three seconds remaining when Rod Brookin swishes a 3-pointer at the buzzer from the corner to force another overtime period. Four different Panthers score in overtime to give Pitt its 21st victory of the year.

January 17, 2011

No. 5 Pitt defeats No. 3 Syracuse 74-66 at the Petersen Events Center. Pitt scores the game’s first 19 points and builds a 19-0 lead, then Syracuse bounces back with 17 points of its own.

January 7, 2002

Following a 77-74 victory at defending Big East champion Boston College and armed with a 14-1 record, surprising Pittsburgh is ranked for the first time since the 1992-93 season. It was the start of 32 consecutive weeks ranked in both major polls.
