MUSEUMS AND ART GALLERIES 1st Edition

WELCOME

Rob Tucker

From the mythical volcanic cone of Mt Taranaki to the ancient pa sites that have marked the region’s hilltops or the innovation of its present population, Taranaki is home to countless great stories which are best told through its many museums and galleries. In Taranaki you can experience a collection of almost everything somewhere around the Mountain. Our galleries and museums range from big to small, from the life’s work of kinetic artist Len Lye, which sits alongside the latest contemporary art at the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery to a unique tribute to the work of local artists at a great dealer gallery. They span the remarkable to the eclectic, from Nigel Ogle’s Tawhiti Museum which presents local artefacts amidst hundreds of hand made models to the history of cast tin toys on display at Inglewood’s Fun Ho! Toy Museum. As you’ll discover as you work your way through the museums and galleries listed in this publication, the people of Taranaki are passionate not only about collecting, but about sharing the region’s history and its many fascinating stories.

GETTING TO TARANAKI By air, land or sea, Taranaki is an accessible region located halfway between Auckland and Wellington on the western seaboard of New Zealand’s North Island.

By Air Air New Zealand flies direct to New Plymouth from Auckland or Wellington daily. The non-stop 45 minute flight will reaffirm your decision to visit Taranaki. Centred around a picture-perfect mountain, the lush regional countryside fertilised by countless eruptions over the centuries is simply stunning on a perfect day, framed on three sides by the endless Tasman Sea lapping the coastline with world-renowned surf swells. If you are in the South Island, Air New Zealand flies direct from Christchurch to New Plymouth Monday to Friday, the flight takes approximately 90 minutes.

By Road There are two main arterial routes into Taranaki. From the north State Highway 3 (SH3) brings you along the dramatic coast of North Taranaki from Te Kuiti, whilst from the south State Highway 3 converges with State Highway 1 at Sanson and brings you north through Wanganui and into Taranaki via Waitotara. For those who are coming from the east and enjoy adventure and history, the Forgotten World Highway (SH43), New Zealand’s first heritage trail, is a must. Starting in Taumarunui the 155km highway winds it way through rugged hill country to Stratford and takes approximately three hours to drive. Regular bus services to Taranaki operate from Auckland and Wellington and stop at points inbetween.

New Plymouth District Judged the most liveable city in New Zealand by North & South magazine and the best small city in the world by the UN-backed Liveable Communities Awards, New Plymouth offers a lively cosmopolitan base for exploring the many galleries and museums of North Taranaki. New Plymouth sits alongside the Tasman Sea and has Mt Taranaki at its back. The city and its surrounding district has a vibrant cafe and cultural scene, extensive events calendar and fantastic parks and gardens, connected by a network of walking and cycling trails, the most prominent being the Coastal Walkway, which winds 10km along the coast. The walkway and the city’s museums and galleries have undoubtedly contributed to New Plymouth’s transformation in recent years.

The Fun Ho! story began in 1935 when Jack Underwood started making lead toys in his basement. The toys began being made in solid cast aluminium from the early 1940s. This production continued until 1982 and they are now being made in the on-site foundry at the museum. The Fun Ho! National Toy Museum has over 3000 toys on display along with plenty of interactive activities. This is not just a museum where you get to look at things, often you are also able to touch. That year, however, the houses, like many throughout Taranaki, had to be abandoned because of the Taranaki Wars. Formed over 20 years ago the Tainui Historical Museum Society set out to record and preserve the history of northern Taranaki from the Mt Messenger tunnel in the south, Okau tunnel in the west and Awakino tunnel in the north. This region has a rich and colourful history reflecting both Maori and Pakeha settlement. The area has abundant natural resources thanks to both the Tasman Sea and the large rivers which pass through the district. These same rivers also provided access into the region’s interior. Coal also features prominently in the region’s history. These fascinating stories and many other aspects of the region’s history are featured in the purpose built museum. The museum is the ideal starting point for those interested in the history of the region and it also houses important archival records, photographs and family histories. The museum has public internet facilities which are available for use.

The game of lawn bowls is enjoyed by thousands throughout New Zealand but surprisingly this is the only registered museum dedicated to the game in the world. The private collection of Bob and Mavis Vinsen provided the foundation for the museum. Thanks to their vision and determination, along with major support from the TSB Community Trust, the TSB Bowls New Zealand Museum opened its doors in 1993. The collection has grown considerably since that time. Visitors to the museum will discover a wealth of bowling memorabilia from New Zealand and around the world, with over 48 countries represented. Items include antique bowls, trophies, plaques, uniforms, photographs and club badges. There is also an extensive library for those interested in finding out more about the history of bowls and the sport’s many clubs, some of which no longer exist.

Tracing ancient Maori trails and pioneering farm tracks from Stratford to Taumarunui in the central North Island, the Forgotten World Highway is New Zealand’s oldest touring route.

respected early surveyor Joshua Morgan, who died in 1892 at the age of 35, and intrepid farmer and mother Alice King, who raised one of the first seven families to settle the area in 1884.

The bush that lines the Forgotten World Highway is as rich as the history behind it. Over thirty geographic, historical and scenic points of interest line the route, and as a result it’s recommended to spend most of a day exploring the 155km journey.

The route also passes by many oncebustling settlements that sprung up to service aspiring mining and farming business plans. Tangarakau was once home to 1200 residents, fuelled by the construction of the nearby railway line, Tatu and Puketihi – both a short walk off the touring route.

The route traverses four natural saddles, at Strathmore, Pohokura, Whangamomona and Tahora, and passes through the breathtaking Tangarakau Gorge, through lush farmland and the ever-encroaching native bush that challenged generations of pioneering farmers and miners. Their stories of ambition and heartbreak can be experienced through hand-hewn tunnels and the remnants of coal mines, flour mills, and the unique papa drives that were used extensively as roading culverts in the 1900s. The people behind these ambitions are also recognised, through memorials to

The main settlement of the route is the village of Whangamomona, first settled in 1895 and home to a population of 300 at its peak. Now home to around 30 residents, the village has a Historic Places Trust Precinct rating, and is centred on the Whangamomona Hotel, which offers accommodation and hearty meals for locals and travellers alike. The village declared itself a republic in 1989, complete with its own presidential election and passport, which can be obtained from the Hotel. The famous Whangamomona Republic Day is held

Your chance to experience ten acres of Taranaki heritage! The Taranaki Pioneer Village is a unique opportunity to experience an outdoor museum presenting the life of Taranaki pioneers in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. A major central Taranaki visitor attraction that appeals to all ages, the Pioneer Village has modern amenities associated with the tourism industry which contrast with a ‘stepping back in time’ experience as visitors enter the main street of the village. Many discoveries await visitors within 40 buildings, including authentic historic structures dating back to 1853. The village has its own railway line encircling the property and the ‘Pioneer Express’ is a popular way to view the complex. For a memorable day trip that is definitely different, contact village reception for concession rates (groups and senior citizens) and arrangements that can include a coffee break or lunch. Our attractions include: • Pembroke Road School • Original village homestead • Stratford Courthouse • Mangatoki Church

works by gallery members can be seen in the smaller gallery. With a membership of near 100 the work is diverse and interesting. Displays feature paintings, pottery, fibre art and sculpture, while smaller gift items such as postcards, art posters and cards, jewellery and hand knitting are also for sale. The Village Gallery started after a group of five locals recognized that one of Eltham’s strengths was its artists and they invited people from the Eltham area to participate in a Community Arts Exhibition in the Eltham Town Hall in 1999. The Community Art Exhibition helped identify local artists and led to the establishment of an art gallery in Eltham. The Village Gallery opened in 2001 in premises on Bridge Street.

The Woolshed Museum is the result of one man’s passion for collecting anything old and interesting. Bill Hone developed the collecting ‘bug’ as a child and since then has amassed a huge array of pioneer and natural history objects. His collection soon required a small building for displays and this fascinating museum was born. The collection continued to grow and after Bill retired he acquired a disused woolshed which he moved onto his property and filled with his vast collection. The sheer quantity of items on display will amaze the visitor and Bill is happy to share the stories that surround them. No matter what your interest you are bound to find something intriguing in the Woolshed Museum.
