THE URBAN INSTITUTE Oakland I July 2021 - Present
Created unit plans for 200+ units apartment project in Mountain View, CA Retrofitted an office building to be a 54 units affordable housing apartment in San Pablo using AutoCAD and ensured its compliance with California Building Code 2019. In a team of two, made three design options for a complex development consisting of a high rise office building, 200+ units apartment, parking structure, and retail. Created multiple feasibility studies for apartment that should comply with FAR (Floor Area Ratio), density requirement, and the city design standards.

This site analysis shows the difference in porosity at pedestrian friendly urban settings and comparing it to the site. Through this analysis, it can be seen that urban landscapes with high porosity are more preferable for pedestrian.
Therefore, the urban institute should have a transparent exterior at street level to activate the surrounding, promoting better quality of urban life of Bryant and 3rd street.

Moreover, at the second level, there is an auditorium that can open up and expand to accomodate bigger social events.

SECTION A1 shows the half floor level at the left side where there are small gathering spaces for the workers to socialize while can also looking at activities from the two different levels at the right side. This strategy achieves visual and spatial interaction at those spaces. SECTION A2 shows the main programs floating above the WPA model of San Francisco which will be displayed in the exhbition space at the ground level. Wood will be used as the material for the floating spaces which indicate the importance of the programs through different materials, creating a spatial interaction SECTION A3 shows the core of the building consisting of the main circulation such as: stairs and elevator, while also has openings from the roof that can illuminate the interior space. The openings from the roof helps to light up the darkest space of the building, while also helps to circulate air in the building by letting the hot air goes out from the roof openings.

DIAGRID STRUCTURE
The project uses concrete friction pile deep foundation. It is in San Francisco where the land is muddy and this foundation is perfect for the situation.
There are beams that span in between the diagrid that hold the floor. The beams connect to the nodes of the diagrid to make a strong connection so the load of the floor will be transferred to the diagrid structure.
The pile will be 2’ in diameter and will be driven into the earth until it is buried 20’ under the ground to get enough friction at the soft soil so that the foundation will be stable.

The dimension of the beam is 12” in height and 6” wide.

The height of each diamond of the diagrid is 6’ and the width is 12’ which is the same with the slope of the stair. Therefore, the stairs are perfectly lined up with the diagrid and it is easier to make the connection.

system and drain-waste-vent system. In the restroom there are hot and cold water supply which are used for the toilets and sinks. After that, all the waste goes to drain-waste-vent system to be carried to the sewer. The vent pipe above releases air that could stop the flow of the water.
The HVAC system in the building regulate the temperature in the interior. The HVAC system runs through the mechanical and electrical shaft besides the egress stair. To cool the rooms, cool air ducts are placed in the ceiling and a radiant heating system is placed inside the floor, underneath the finish.

Plumbing consist of water supply, drainage, vent line, and many other things. The most important concept of plumbing is the supply
ADA REQUIREMENT
The skin or facade of the design is a glass skin that fills the gap in the diagrid. Thermochromic glass is the material that I used because as the temperature and the intensity of the sun light increases, the color of the glass will be darken and block the sun light. The facade that covers important programs such as auditorium, exhibition space, ect, has an operable triangular aluminum panel to regulate the light that comes in. The frame of the glass at the facade is a 2” deep aluminum glass frame which will cover all the building to prevent water getting in to the building.

The site is located right beside highway 580. Its elevation is about 8’ lower than the highway so if a rowing centeris placed there, drivers on the highway cannot see it

To promote the rowing center, the transparent boat storage have to be elevated so it will be visible from the highway.
STRUCTURE
WALLS
The rowing center then will appear as a box of colorful rowing shells collection that caught drivers’ eyes.
Usually the boat storage is hidden and located at a tightly closed space whithin the building. However, the project reverses that idea by elevating and opening up the boat storage to display the rowing shells as a way to promote the boathouse.
To make the elevated storage functionable, a continuos circulation of a stair, hallway and ramp is needed for the users to go up to the storage, take the rowing shells and walk straight to the platform on the water

The solid “L” acts as a horizontal transition between the sheared and rectangular volume. The hollow “L” helps the vertical circulation between different levels. Those two “L” volumes have different material which is a grey colored material. Thus, when people enter the building they will immediately know when they circulate from the sheared volume to the rectangular volume because they have to pass through the grey colored material (the “L” volumes).

The project is located at the south side of four intersecting streets which are College ave, Claremont ave, 62nd st., and Florio st. College ave. is the busiest street with a lot of cars and pedestrian, thus the building massing is oriented to that street welcoming the pedestrian to enter the building. The massing is also oriented to Claremonot st. where many people would drive through the street to go from Berkeley to Oakland.

The communitty ce c nter is lo oca cated in Berkeley. It wiill be a mixed d use building which ch consist off comercial space, caf afe, e, gallery, meeting room ms, and d oth ther e spaces necessary to support ber erke keley community activiities
The building massing is made from the two angular volumes which are oriented to the College ave and Claremont ave. Those two volumes then have a conflict with the rectangular box limitation thus generating the massing
Interesting things happen as a result of the conflict between those two angular volumes. It creates different types of plans for each floor. As seen in the right diagram, he division of close and open space for each floor will
be unique. Thus, creating new experience every time the users move from one floor to another

STUDIO T-SQ F E A SI B I L I T Y ST U D I E S JULY 2021 - PRESENT
In the feasibility studies, I designed the building massing based on the FAR (Floor Area Ratio), unit density, parking module, and structure type to achieve the most efficient space usage and the best user experience in relation to the site.
STUDIO T-SQ SCH E M AT I C D E SIGN JULY 2021 - PRESENT
In the schematic design phase, I helped with the massing design and code analysis. The building massing have to comply with California building code and the city’s design standard. Those diagrams show where the building complies or violates the codes. Then it will be used to ask exception to the building department.
