El Gringo Tempranillo from Hammeken Cellars Pays Tribute to the Wild, Wild West – A bold character, El Gringo wine recalls the tradition of making great Western movies in the Tabernas Desert of Spain – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 6, 2020 (Alicante, Spain) – El Gringo, a lifestyle wine made by the creative team at Hammeken Cellars, has an inspiring story to connect with U.S. wine lovers. The name derives from the tradition of creating epic Westerns starring Hollywood legends in Spain. Bold by design, El Gringo is sourced from 30-year-old vines in Castilla La Mancha and delivers an intense flavor that appeals to fans of Tempranillo, Spain’s noble red variety. The El Gringo name and creative packaging recalls the tradition of making Western movies in the Tabernas Desert in Almeria in southeastern Spain, about one hour from the Mediterranean Sea. Sometimes referred to as “Spaghetti Westerns,” the movies filmed in this remote Spanish outpost of Hollywood featured some of the most famous actors of their day including Clint Eastwood, Henry Fonda, Charlton Heston, Sophia Loren, Richard Burton, and Elizabeth Taylor. Director Sergio Leone staged epics such as The Good, the Bad and the Ugly in the barren landscape, and is thought to have coined the name “El Gringo” in reference to the many American actors who made a living as movie extras on set. Almeria ceased production in the late-1970s and now hosts a popular theme park for aficionados of the western genre. Years later, Nicholas Hammeken and his winemaking team have found inspiration in the El Gringo legend. “Many of us grew up as fans of the westerns filmed in the desert just south of our company headquarters in Alicante,” shares Nicolas Hammeken, Founder & CEO of Hammeken Cellars. “We had a vivid picture of El Gringo telling stories about his moviemaking days with a glass of wine in hand, a production we have realized in the wine cellar. El Gringo is our tribute to those icons of cinema, an enduring connection between U.S. and Spain, that brings so much pleasure to our lives.” Hearty and full of character, El Gringo delivers an intensely flavored Tempranillo, dark red in color, clean aromas featuring black cherries, strawberries, roasted coffee beans and chocolate with four months of aging in French oak to add complexity. The suggested retail price is $15 per 750-ml bottle. El Gringo is available nationwide.
