QUEEN CITY UNDERGROUND TUNNELS The tunnels in Over the Rhine (OTR) at 1818 Race Street, were completed in 1855. They were built for brothers, After the Linck’s went out of business in 1859, the property was rented over the next 15+ years to a veritable list of who’s who of Cincinnati Brewers from: Charles Schmidt to Christian Moerlein and John Kaufman. According to research, in 1923, this location was busted for housing a speakeasy. Notorious for its secret location, in 1942, several people were arrested for gambling and three pinball machines were taken as evidence. Pinball, considered a form of gambling, was outlawed in most major cities, including Cincinnati, in the US from 1940 to

TWIN ANCHORS Located in an historic Old Town building that dates back to 1881 and officially founded in 1932, Twin Anchors Restaurant & Tavern ® is one of the oldest
restaurants in the city of Chicago. Notoriously a Prohibition-era speakeasy known as “Tante Lee Soft Drinks.” The building served as a candy and soda shop, and it also provided refreshments for the “thirsty” through the back exit. An entire section of wall opens into a secret hallway out towards the rear of the building and they boarded up the front to make the bar look closed. From the 1950’s to the 1980’s, it was one of Frank Sinatra’s favorite places to go when he was in
16 town.

CAPITAL, TEMPERANCE FOUNTAIN Washington DC was intended to be the model dry city for the country, but it ended up with more than 3,000 speakeasies and a widespread disregard for the law of the land. Congress even employed its own bootleggers. It is believed that 80% of the legistlature drank alcohol during Prohibtion. Temperance Fountain: The Temperance Fountain was donated to the city in 1882 by Henry D. Cogswell, a crusader in the temperance movement. It was originally placed at a prominent location: Seventh and Pennsylvania Avenue. The message was to drink water, not whiskey, as there were so many saloons along the Avenue to tempt passersby. Today the fountain sits at the corner of Seventh
20 Street and Indiana Avenue, NW, across from the National Archives and Navy Memorial.

WOODROW WILSON’S P R I VA T E C E L L A R A N D T H E LITTLE GREEN HOUSE President Woodrow Wilson’s Private Cellar: The president famous for enacting the Prohibition (The Volstead Act) had his own private cellar. When he left office in 1921, Prohibition was the law of the land, and he had to figure out how to transporting his wine to his new location. He was granted an exemption from Congress. Little Green House on K Street: This was the unofficial headquarters of the Ohio Gang. The Ohio Gang was a small, but influential group of politicians, including President Warren G. LAWRENCEBURG, IN
MGP DISTILLERY MGP’s 170-year-old distillery in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, began life as the Rossville Distillery in 1847 by George Ross, and is one of America’s last Prohibitionera distilleries. The underground aquifer that produces limestone-filtered water, gave the rye whiskey a pure, unique taste. During Prohibition, George Remus was based in Cincinnati. He was within 200 miles of every shuttered whiskey warehouse in the country, including just 30 miles from Rossville Distillery. He even had warehousing grounds on the current day property.
26
Seagrams bought Rossville Distillery in 1933. After a few more owners, MGP bought the distillery in 2011. They produce their proprietary brands, including George Remus Bourbon.

LOUISVILLE Secret Cellar location: Lawrenceburg The MGP Distillery Secret Cellar location: Louisville The Rathskeller; Seelbach Hotel
THE RATHSKELLER ( T H E S E E L B A C H H O T E L) The Seelbach Hotel was the manifestation of the American Dream for immigrant brothers Louis and Otto Seelbach, two native Bavarians who traveled to the city to learn the hotel business in the mid-19th century. In May of 1905, the “Seelbach Hotel” celebrated its grand opening, drawing 25,000 visitors. Situated in the center of bourbon and whiskey country, the hotel attracted infamous underworld kingpins and gangsters during Prohibition, especially to the speakeasy, The Rathskeller. “King of the Bootleggers” George Remus spent time at The Seelbach where he became friends writer F. Scott Fitzgerald. If you visit The Seelbach, veteran concierge and hotel historian, Larry Johnson, will explore more of
30 its history.
SECRET CELLARS WITH GEORGE REMUS In 1925, F. Scott Fitzgerald immortalized both Remus and the hotel in his novel, The
Great
Gatsby.
In
fact, Remus served as the inspiration for the novel’s title character “Jay Gatsby.”
