Pneuma
(“breath”, “spirit”, “soul”) exhale the bones are sighing coming awake slowly
and moves enchanted to arrived on my ear and bones and holy dark, born from a lovers dance of spirit and blood.

And how how your breath moves over my sleeping bones the element of skin to animate invigorate to set ablaze with grace the stifling room where I'd hid
!
I bend my head and receive this grace set gently on my cheek. And all of mornings revival glory came vesseled in your breath.

Hush listen the heart is breathing with spirit spiraling. I watch the soft ripples rising gliding as air travels through the forest of your lungs
I exhale as my bones are sighing

PERFORMANCE NOTES

For the sake of legibility, word extensions/melisma marks have been omitted from the small group’s music. Small group singers should use the vowels indicated in the music, and continue to use those vowels until a new one has been indicated. For example, the small group uses “hmm” from the beginning until m.17, and uses “oo” thereafter until the next vowel change.
!
The small group should be evenly balanced between parts. At the director’s discretion, and depending on the size of the full choir, the small group can consist or more or fewer singers than the 10-12 suggested. In the sections of the piece without small-group music, the small group sings with the full choir. The singers can be placed throughout the choir or grouped together within the larger ensemble. The end-effect should be one of the small group emanating from the choir rather than being a second entity, so the two groups shouldn’t be placed antiphonally.

At all times, tempo is flexible and the music should be allowed to breathe.
