THE WAY THROUGH THE WOODS They shut the road through the woods Seventy years ago. Weather and rain have undone it again, And now you would never know There was once a road through the woods Before they planted the trees. It is underneath the coppice and heath, And the thin anemones. Only the keeper sees That, where the ring-dove broods, And the badgers roll at ease, There was once a road through the woods.

Yet, if you enter the woods Of a summer evening late, When the night-air cools on the trout-ringed pools, Where the otter whistles his mate, (They fear not men in the woods, Because they see so few.) You will hear the beat of a horse’s feet, And the swish of a skirt in the dew, Steadily cantering through The misty solitudes, As though they perfectly knew The old lost road through the woods… But there is no road through the woods. ~ Rudyard Kipling, ca. 1910
! PERFORMANCE NOTES !
A minimum of two speakers should be used in playing back the electronics: one at stage left and the other at stage right. The playback should be mapped to the house, i.e. the stage-right speaker to the left channel.

The performer may opt to use amplification for his/her instrument, but it is not required. The performance setup should include a stopwatch or clock linked to the electronic playback, which must be in view of the performer at all times.
!
Each measure in the score indicates five seconds of music. Durations are relative and do not indicate a strict pulse.
! All accidentals apply only to the note which they precede. !
Vertical dotted lines are used to indicate relationships between events in the trumpet part and electronics. A dotted line connecting two lines, as at 1’55”, indicates that the events linked should occur simultaneously. A dotted line extending from the trumpet part through the electronics with an indication next to it indicates either: 1) that the trumpet’s gesture begins either at the conclusion of an indicated line of text (as at 0’10”) or 2) that a gesture should reach the indicated point before a given electronics event (as at 0’15”).

The final gesture can be played in the performer’s own time. The electronic playback will stop at 4’30”; MAKE SURE THAT THE PLAYBACK IS THE ONLY ITEM IN THE PLAYER’S QUEUE!
