Sometimes a composer may also choose not to use a note at all. Instead they may use a short silence or what musicians call a rest. Take a red pen and NEATLY circle all the rests. Now your teacher will demonstrate the piece below and then you can try it yourself. LEAN ON ME
Often music moves in leaps and steps. Notice in this piece that the first two notes are a leap UP of a 3rd [ C-E ] and note that; note two to three is a step DOWN [ E-D ]. Label the LEAPS with an "L" and label the STEPS with an "S."

Time Signature: Tells us how many beats are in a bar. [E.g.
means 4 crotchet beats in a bar,
3 means 3 crotchet beats in a bar 4
Bar line: The single line that separates the music into individual BARS of music. Double Bar Line:
Circle the double bar at the end of the music. This means you have come to the end of the music.
Scale: A series of notes that can either ASCEND or DESCEND in a stepwise motion. Step: Leap:
From one note to the next. .............. Playing note C to D is one step. Jumping over at least one note....... E.g Playing note C then E is one small leap.
Ascending: Descending:
Moving in an upward direction to the right. Moving in a downward direction to the left.
