business planning FAMILY BUSINESS – COMBINING LOVE AND MONEY MAKES FOR A HEADY MIX Presented by Alf Priestly of Family Business Australia

Working together with family is quite common. Most businesses in Australia are private, family owned businesses. Very few however are actually set up with the intention of becoming a family business; this generally just evolves with the business. Families in business combine two of the most important aspects of people’s lives: love and work. As a consequence, when they are working well, it brings with it enormous rewards. While on the other hand, there are a number of dangers which can derail even the most successful family and business. Family Business Australia together with Bond University has developed a simple model called A.G.E.S to help you navigate your way through these risks to set you on the path to a harmonious family and successful business. Join FBA Accredited Adviser Alf Priestly and FBA Member, Graham Henderson of Mitchell Laminates to find out how they have, and you can, enjoy the benefits of working with family.

business enhancement and growth SMART NETWORKING: GET A POSITIVE RETURN FROM YOUR NETWORKING EFFORTS Presented by Brenda Thomson of Networking World

SMART Networking is not about social chit chat or being able to work a room. SMART networking is just plain good business. More than 80 per cent of business in the marketplace comes either directly or indirectly from networking and referrals. However, for the majority of small business owners networking is a costly, frustrating and often miserable waste of time, rarely returning a positive return on investment. It really is a case of more than 80 per cent of the business going to less than 20 per cent of business owners. At this essential workshop you will learn: • The three key things you must have in place before you leave the office that will guarantee a positive return on your networking investment • A new approach to networking that will change your view on networking forever • The secret to effective follow up so people will be thrilled to hear from you Plus you will have the opportunity to put your new found skills into practice with your fellow participants. This workshop is a must for small business owners who are serious about using networking as a marketing and business development strategy. Brenda Thomson, CEO of Networking World, founder of the Strategic Alliance Success Program and winner of the 2008 Australian Home Based Business of the Year, has spent the past six years researching what works and what doesn't in networking for small business owners. Hundreds of small business owners have successfully adopted her approach and improve their results.

Do you need assistance engaging with other land owners or the development community? Do you require assistance recognising the full potential of your property?

• Preparation of a spatial and/or operational brief; • Site yield analysis – providing an understanding of how big a development can be – floor area, site coverage, building height etc; • Project procurement processes and options – town planning and building permit processes, joint venture opportunities and construction methodology. DO YOU NEED SOME HELP WITH YOUR BUSINESS? DO YOU NEED SOMEONE TO TALK TO AND BOUNCE IDEAS OFF? DOES YOUR BUSINESS COVER ITS DAY TO DAY COSTS? ARE YOU WORKING IN YOUR BUSINESS RATHER THAN ON YOUR BUSINESS?

If you answered ‘yes’ to any of these questions, you could benefit from meeting with an independent business Mentor. Frequently there is nobody other than those working within the business to discuss these issues with. A Mentor can bring an outside and fresh perspective to the issues, and assist in the decision process. They also bring clarity and help you focus on the issues which matter to help you reach your potential. The Frankston and Mornington Peninsula Small Business Clinics initiative is just the service. Experienced business people, who are Mentors through the Small Business Mentoring Service, are available on a regular basis at the Mornington Peninsula Shire and Frankston City Council offices to meet with businesses. The Mentors are there to answer any questions you may have and can provide advice on a range of areas, such as marketing, management, finance and planning. The service is provided at no cost to businesses and is provided by the Economic Development Units of Frankston City and Mornington Peninsula Shire. To reserve your 45 minute one-on-one workshop with a business Mentor, please contact us on 1300 322 322 or business@frankston.vic.gov.au
