Horsens Prison conversion/renovation Project background

The location of the project is a former state prison in Horsens which has been partially transformed into a museum in 2006, creating a place with a great architectural potential and great flexibility for the design and purpose.

Concept

The idea of the project is focused on 5 main points - HISTORY, CULTURE, ARTS, MUSEUM and TURISM. The project is designed to bring a welcoming touch to the area and create opportunities to host cultural events and attract tourists, keeping the focus on the history behind the walls. The place is thought to be welcoming also from an economical point of view, both for the clients and the business strategy.

(Hotel)

THE NEW DESIGN The construction is a subtle combination between old and new with the aim of preserving as much as posible of the old built. The old infirmiry was succesfully transformed into a hotel by extending the building on the east direction and turning the old roof into a livable atic. In total, the hotel can accomodate 62 people, exactly the number of places of a large turist bus. A restaurant of 112 places was designed in the old kitchen of the prison, with changes in the layout of the interior walls ans by adding a second floor in the front part of the section. The hotel and the restaurant are connected through an underground construction which serves also as an exhibition hall with flexible furniture in order to be used for different kind of events.

NEW STAIRCASES

SUSTAINABILITY The built fulfils the characteristics of a sustainable construction through the use of sustainable materials, wind turbines and rain water recycling. -A large amount of water needed in the buildings can be replaced with the rain water collected by the water tank. -An important amount of electricity used on a daily basis can be produced by the wind turbines as the speed of the wind is very favorable in the area. -The materials used in the building process will be recyclable and will not affect the people coming in contact with them.

REZIDENTIAL BUILDINGS AMALIEPARK HORSENS FOCUS POINTS Architecture The architecture of the buildings and the building relation to the terrain and other areas. Buildability Functional relations, including spacious effects, placement of pathways and technical installations. Sustainability Rated by the promotion of the use of sustainable materials, energy, including a rating of operational and maintenance, costs and energy class. Property utilization and price Consistency between m2 price, legislation and claims.

CONCEPT Location: Horsens, Denmark Plot area: 6000 m2 Subsidized area: 3600 m2 The buildings are designed to relate to the area and its characteristics. The plot is characterized by large old trees on a sloping grass surface, great terrain differences, different paths and walkways which should be preserved as much as possible.

The main idea of the design follows the Scandinavian architectural style which is mostly used in Denmark, defined by simple shapes, minimalism, functionality, and low-cost mass production. The buildings contain 2- and 3 room apartments, distributed approx. 50/50 summarizing 3600 m2 calculated as subsidized area.
