site Nowadays, transformed railway arches are quite commonly seen in the United Kingdom. Refurbished for commercial and even residential use, spaces that were not meant to be inhabited have became my point of interest this year. I have decided to do project for the Cleland lane arches in Glasgow Southside. The arch complex, in my opinion, have high potential for commercial and community use in the developing Laurieston area, which is closely located to the city centre, but lacks local amenities and gathering places. The boundaries of the project site are specified by a Cleland lane, which starts from the Cleland street and ends facing the Gorbals street, leaving a triangle shaped land, potential for creating more more parks in this residential area.

Arch complex My proposal for the external Cleland lane use is the Laurieston Arch complex, which would provide refurbished arch spaces for business, leisure and commercial use. Spatious archways would be cheaper solution for starting businesses and an opportunity form local, yet still close to the city centre community place. Small park next to the arches would provide green area for the neighbourhood. Park seatings and lightning could potentialy enhance walkability and sense of community.

Arka The Arka (translated as ‘‘arch’’ in Lithuanian) is the brand name for the concept of a leisure, learning and entertainment spaces located at the edge of the Arch complex in Laurieston. The combined cookery, cafe, restaurant and bar spaces work together as one, complimenting each other within common supplies and activities. Presentable and inviting from the outside, Arka is accessible for public through the main two entrances leading to the each arch.

The right side arch has bar and restaurant area complimented by the stage that could be used for live music events and small shows bringing more entertainment to the area. The back arch provides restrooms, accessible from both front arches, staff areas, such as, changing rooms, office and commercial kitchen, which connects to the back entrance for kitchen staff, delivery and disposal.

The Arka’s cookery place runs various types of classes and also provides a great open space for parties and events. It balances between commercial and non profit activities offering educational classes, hiring for private events and parties and organising free / charity based occasional events, so everyone can try it in different ways. Inspired by the Brighton Community Kitchen mission, Arka cookery aims to bring local people together through food and group activities, as well as to spread the right education and practice about healthy and tasty lifestyle.

The community kitchen is divided into two different sized zones. The bigger front kitchen, which is visible from the outside is for up to 12 people, while the small and more private back kitchen is for 6 people. The two kitchens are divided by the washing unit, accessible from both sides to use. Each 5 ring hob and oven is suitable for up to 2 people to share. Both kitchens have adjustable counter tops at the end of workstations suitable for children and disabled to use.

The materiality of cookery and cafe consists of warm and welcoming colours, and durable materials. The main working countertops are made from stainless steel to ensure good maintenance and durability. The cork ceiling panels help to absorb sound from larger groups during cookery classes. The side terazzo countertop and tiles are easy to clean and add decorative patterns to the space.

r e s ta u r a n t The second arch has bar and restaurant which offer fresh brunch during all day and local drafts and spirits. Even though the shapes and style within all Arka spaces remain similar, the colour and material palette in this arch gives more moody and intimate athmosphere responding to its different opening times and purpose.

The menu of Arka is inspired by the popular brunch places in Glasgow Southside - Lagom kitchen and the Strange Brew. The most special ingredient of this place is their fresh baked bread, which is used in most of the menu dishes and sold in bakery shop.

The commercial kitchen of Arka is designed by the sandwich making sequence, starting from the baking area, where their homemade bread is prepared and baked, some of it goes to the bakery shop and some goes to the further kitchen area, where it is grilled and topped by a hot ingredient (eggs, meat, mushrooms), and then dressed with salad and cold toppings at the last serving area where it gets collected for the table through the pass window. The washing and preparation area is further from the main kitchen and close to the main doors, so it does not disturb the active cooking area and makes the plates circulation (in and out) fuid.
The Back entrance to the kitchen is suitable for delivery and disposal, as well as for the kitchen staff to enter and exit. The storage rooms are considerably sized, to store not only the kitchen and bakery goods, but also the stock for the community kitchen, which can be delivered and refilled easily to cookery storage after each session. The close up drawing shows that the side wall of arch is moved forward in order to have a suitable height for the kitchen worktop, while it also provides a room for the water, gas and electricity connections which can be hidden behind the area.

Even though the space has more intimate and moody colours, it is also very open and community like. The long table seat in the middle gives a feeling of a shared feast, and leaves the visibility to the stage. The stage at the back of the arch is adds to the space with potential entertainmentand live music. The 3d striped cork panels at the back of the stage wall gives a better sound quality for both paying and listening.

The cork panels absorb the sound and echoes within the arch shaped ceiling. They come in 2 thicknesses to create 3D pattern which improves the sound insulation performance. Bent wood panels applied in different direction than cork panels provide smooth adhesive application for the 3D cork. Apart from absorbing interior sounds, ceiling panels also reduce the sound from the passing trains above.

opening times Varying in opening and busy times, all areas compliment each other and are flexible for accessibility. The baery/cafe place opens the earliest while the bar closes the Arka in evenings. Specific days of week also impact crowding due to different needs and availability. The variety of clients use spaces in different times, for example, while the student groups are more available on school holidays and afternoon times on weekdays, the proffessional clients are more available on weekends and evenings. Since Arka has divisions between spaces it can be flexible with their opening times according to seasons and community needs.
