LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE 2021

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY I design with curiosity and respect for the complex nature of place: its history, culture, and the beings that shape it. Listening to place before shaping it facilitates grounded and resilient change. Conversations between place and designer generate creative ideas that could not arise from the designer alone. Slowly evolving natural and cultural systems are irreplaceable. Through my work, I seek to support these systems and use them as inspiration to design new ones. My aim is to help places become more self-sustaining, abundant and joyful, growing deep roots that will nurture the community for years to come.

KALEIDOSCOPE SQUARE

Athens, Georgia In the heart of downtown Athens, “College Square” is a hot spot for gathering. Its location on the main street in town, across from the UGA arch and the entrance to north campus give College Square appeal for students and townies alike. While the block is occasionally used for festivals, many Athenians call for this area to become a permanent car-free zone. Since the COVID-19 pandemic has necessitated increased outdoor gathering space, the street has temporarily been closed to traffic, creating the possibility of its becoming a permanent pedestrian-only space. Kaleidoscope Square refracts the historical and cultural context of Athens and UGA, bringing new energy to this unique and beloved space. Using traditional materials in innovative forms, it playfully shatters the rigid traditions represented by the North Quad across the street and arranges the pieces in a new and fresh way. Large, open areas on the northern and southern ends allow for gatherings and events, while the interior provides various spaces for relaxing in shade surrounded by plants. A multi-level stage backed by a stepped seating area doubles as seating and an exploratory area for children.

HANCOCK AVENUE STREETSCAPE

Athens, Georgia The stretch of Hancock Avenue between Pulaski and Hull Streets is a destination in downtown Athens, Georgia featuring popular restaurants, bars with outdoor patios, and an indie movie theater. In addition to these attractions, the area houses a plasma center, a convenience store and the Athens Chamber of Commerce, which are visited throughout the day. Existing colorful murals and mosaics add decor to historic architecture and materials. This streetscape design seeks to celebrate and improve upon the area’s unique identity, using contrasting, geometric paving patterns, colorful murals and cafe tables, and lush plantings to unify the block. Plentiful public space is added in parklets and pedestrian alles connected by a mid-block speed table, prompting cars to slow down. A bioswale is added to the center of Hancock Street to manage stormwater, and a protected bike lane transitions before the right turn lane onto Pulaski Street, making the block safer for cyclists.

CELEBRATE COMER

Comer, Georgia This design seeks to bring new energy to Comer’s downtown so that locals and visitors alike may enjoy its historic charm and comfortable pedestrian scale. A downtown park is one focal area, where a barn is repurposed as a rental venue, eight rental cabins provide convenient lodging for event attendees, and a small, scenic pond and naturalistic plantings create a beautiful setting. A grassy gathering space, a natural playground, a community garden, and an ecologically restored stormwater drainage area are other highlights of this urban node. East North Street is another area of significant change, where a variety of outdoor dining and gathering spaces are proposed, such as a rooftop bar. a pedestrian alley, and a large, flexible event space with a stage. A variety of seating options throughout the area provide comfort for a diverse public, including cafe tables and chairs, long tables and U-shaped benches for groups in both shade and sun. Various planters and planted areas bring color and life to the street.
