Younique this concierge magazine is dedicated to you
As travelers ourselves, we yearned for some kind of publication that informed and entertained us while also containing local information needed to help us see and enjoy all the things the locals know about. A magazine that engaged us and yet wasn’t too heavy on advertising in a way that many are. From the start, Greydoor publishing had a desire to work closely with Les Clefs d’Or to produce a fabulous magazine for their Les Clefs d’Or member properties in North America and we were pleased to partner with them in 2016. The crossed gold keys of this wonderful organization are more than just its symbol; they are the symbol of guaranteed quality service.
Steven
It is this philosophy that guides us in our desire to create a publication for each member hotel, which then becomes a valuable tool and addition to a guest’s stay. A magazine portable enough not to hinder and yet full enough to guide and advise in a way that makes you feel you have the hotel concierge walking beside you. With content approved and provided by the very team who are hosting you, it gives an insight into the secrets of the city in a way that hasn’t been available to a guest before.
Alex
We hope you enjoy it and that it helps to make your stay at this fabulous hotel even more memorable. Travel Safe.

Welcome
to the Napa River Inn
You are not cookie cutter, and neither are we. While there is a certain array of physical characteristics that make us human, each of us comes with our own singular set of hopes, dreams, talents, desires, and aspirations. Our own spark which makes us special. When we travel, we embark on a journey to explore not only our own unique essence, but also that of the places we visit. The Napa River Inn is a luxury destination that is an integral part of the quintessential Napa spirit. Located in the oldest neighborhood in downtown Napa, many of the buildings are turn-of-last-century river warehouse and agri-farm buildings that housed grains, coal, and other necessities needed by Napa in the late 1800’s. We are proud of the adaptive reuse project that (100 years later) won awards and converted these disused buildings into a Forbes Four Star Inn and collection of well-known shops and restaurants. The personality of the property conveys its long history in town, and the one-of-akind buildings are still locally owned and operated by the families who invested in the dream of saving this piece of history.
THE CONCIERGE
Our rooms and buildings have their own individual style and personality, just like you. When you call the Inn, or use our website, you are talking directly to our diverse mix of local employees. Our goal is to provide service that epitomizes the grace and quality of Napa’s laid-back luxury, and to introduce you to our home in a way that celebrates your distinctive needs and desires. We want to know who you are, and we want you to get to know us. Sincerely, Sara Brooks, General Manager

“Surrounded by the valley’s world-renowned vineyards”
A Napa
Original
Walking distance to world-class everything, the Napa River Inn stands out as an upscale boutique hotel in the heart of Downtown Napa.
Surrounded by the valley’s world-renowned vineyards, beautiful scenery, excellent restaurants, and favorable climate, the historic inn is perched on the banks of the Napa River.
Fine dining, shopping, entertainment, and wine tasting are all within walking distance. Hiking, biking, golfing, balloon rides, and amazing wineries are all an easy drive.
The Hatt/Napa Mill buildings, where the Inn is located, are the last vestiges of a thriving Main Street industrial and commercial center of late 1800s and early 1900s Napa City. This historical significance has garnered the complex local landmark status and National Register of Historic Places listing.
The Napa River Inn has been called “An intimate, boutique hotel privately owned and run by in-the-know locals. Great location, with wonderful restaurants and a fun destination in the middle of downtown Napa.” It is an authentic, local experience.
The Inn is locally owned, and staffed by an employee base that is predominately Napa natives and long-time residents. Their love of their community shows in the care they take of the property and guests, and the enthusiasm they have for sharing the little known details of the town and Valley. Awarded Four Star designation by Forbes Travel Guide, the Inn is also downtown Napa’s only Michelin rated hotel. The Napa River Inn has 66 rooms, many with fireplaces, river views and balconies. Guests to the property can dine al fresco at award-winning restaurants, enjoy live music at Silo’s nightclub which is located at the base of three historic grain vaults, or try the delightful day spa in the old Napa Police Station, a purveyor of amazing local grape-based body products. Free WiFi, parking and breakfast-in-bed are some of the included amenities.

A Warehouse Full of History and Memories
A Historical Sketch of the Hatt Family and the Napa Mill Written by Rebecca A. Yerger, Ed. Cammy Pedroja
The roots of the historic Napa Mill buildings, now part of the property belonging to the grand and beautiful Napa River Inn, are the vestiges of what was once a thriving Main Street industrial and commercial center in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
Their historical significance has earned them local landmark status and a place on the National Register of Historic Places. To encourage our guests to fully experience the rich, historic setting of the Napa River Inn property, we like to share the story of our beautiful buildings. In the 1800s, the downtown Napa neighborhood wasn’t quite the charming strolling destination it is today. With the convenience of both river and rail transportation nearby, the area between Division Street and Third Street became Napa’s industrial neighborhood and was the site of two of Napa’s earliest large capacity wineries: Uncle Sam’s Wine Cellar and G. Migliavacca Winery. This is now where the Napa County Library sits today. Both of these wineries produced large quantities of wine (around half a million gallons per year), but also made vinegar, sherry, and brandy. This was before Napa was known as the international wine-making mecca it is today. Beginnings of Wine Country As Napa grew, the industrial downtown area added more modern conveniences, including gaslights in 1867. The Napa Gas Company was located on Fifth Street and Brown Street. The population continued to grow, conveniences were added, and Napa was on its way to becoming a real city. In 1879, Prussian immigrant Captain Albert Hatt built his first warehouse on Fourth, Main, and Brown Streets, where he sold coal and produce. Hatt’s booming business gradually outgrew that warehouse, and in 1884 he constructed the first of the Hatt Buildings at Main Street and Fifth Street. Before coming to Napa, Hatt had followed his family tradition of a seafaring life, sailing many of the seven seas before landing in San Francisco in February 1859. He continued traveling aboard steamships and sailing vessels on the waters of the Sacramento River and the Northern California coast until 1865. About that time, Hatt met an Irish woman named Alma Horgen, and on November 23, 1865, Alma and Albert were married and settled in Napa. Naturally, their home was on the river.

For a brief time in 1865, Hatt operated a mercantile shop on Napa’s Main Street. But he soon returned to traversing the local waterways, supporting his growing family as a steamship captain. There would eventually be six children: Anne, Albert Jr., William, Ella, Amelia, and Josephine. During this period, Hatt built a larger family residence to accommodate his growing brood. According to the May 2, 1874, issue of the Napa County Reporter, the house was located in the vicinity of the Oak Mound School, a college-prep school for boys, which would place the two-story Hatt home on either the 200 or 300 block of Randolph Street. Back to Business After 11 years, Hatt left the waterways for local commerce. “Capt. A. Hatt,” stated the November 1, 1878, Napa County Reporter, “keeps a coal and coke depot opposite the Banner warehouse on Brown Street. He also keeps an assortment of
vegetables.” Hatt also had a steamship in connection with the business, named after his daughter Amelia. Though considered a luxury vessel and lovingly described as “commodious,” it wouldn’t have had many of the luxe amenities Napa visitors expect today. Throughout the late 1800s, Hatt planned further business expansion, having purchased a large riverfront lot in 1882. Bounded by Fifth and Main streets, Hatt paid $1.00 for the property. By November 1884, Hatt was conducting business from his new brick warehouse known as the Hatt Building. This building now houses the lobby and seven beautiful guest rooms of the historic Napa River Inn. The Toll of Time Though the business was doing well, tragedy marked the Hatts’ life. Several family members died prematurely. In 1898, both Captain and Alma Hatt contracted pneumonia, with Alma dying
Early Napa Waterways In 1844, just to the south of the Hatt/Napa Mill complex, where Division Street meets the river, the “Embarcadero de Napa” was established with the landing of the schooner “Sacramento.” As the years passed, wharves lined Main Street’s riverfront. In 1848 the booming activity of the downtown/mill area necessitated a bridge being built across the river, eastward from Brown Street. Unfortunately, this early Napa River crossing collapsed just one year later. The

in her sleep and her husband barely surviving. The grieving widower retired and returned to the sailing life. After temporarily taking over the business, tragedy struck again when Albert, Jr. committed suicide. The captain, now older, decided to sell the business. In 1912 he moved in with his daughter, Amelia Schlott, and lived out the rest of his life in San Francisco. Captain Albert Edward Hatt died on September 25, 1913, at the approximate age of 73. Eulogized as a true “Napa Pioneer,” Hatt was buried in the family plot at Tulocay Cemetery in Napa.

little bridge gave way when a wagon overfilled with wheat attempted to cross it. The driver was able to swim to safety, but the horses, along with the wagon and wheat harvest of 1849, were lost. This bit of Napa lore is artfully depicted in Alan Shepp’s iconic Mosaic Fountain, titled Ars Longa Vita Brevis (Life is Brief but Art Endures), located on what is now the Riverbend Plaza behind the Napa River Inn. Look closely, and you will see a horse’s skull and wagon wheel illustrated in glass and tile under the clear water.

Silo’s Live Music
Boys of Summer (Eagles), and Forejour (Foreigner and Journey). While food and wine nourish the body, it is certainly music that nourishes the soul. The once sleepy little town of Napa is celebrated globally for its wine, and has many restaurants of international repute. But it is the music scene that is erupting with verve and keeps toes tapping after the bread has been broken and the wine glasses drained. If you want some serious fun, Silo’s Night Club located in the Historic Napa Mill offers an outstanding selection of live music from some of the Bay Area’s most celebrated bands, musicians, and performers. At only 125 seats, it is the town’s premier up-close and personal entertainment venue where every seat is close to the artists on stage, creating a connection between the performers and audience that is energizing. The average ticket price runs between $15 and $35, with many Wednesdays and Thursdays open with no admission price for “local’s nights.”
Recent additions to the lineup include global celebrities talking about intimate aspects of their careers in “Stories beyond the Spotlight.” The 2017 series included legendary bassist Tony Levin casually conversing with the audience on topics like how it was to work with John Lennon, Peter Frampton, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, and others. The audience was awed, amazed, and easily posed for pictures with this rock great. Silo’s has a full bar, offers its own craft beer and serves a selection of local wines and small plates. Fun items on the menu include: “Papas Don’t Preach” steak size truffle fries, hand-crafted pizzas, and a delicious “Cheeseburger in Paradise.” Silo’s is open Wednesday – Saturday, 6 pm to close. Some Sunday events include music al fresco on the Riverbend Plaza; performances supported by the local Jazz society, and special performances such as the “Stories beyond the Spotlight.” 530 Main Street, silosnapa.com

The Spa
At Napa River Inn
Grape seed bath and body products are all the rage right now, but they wouldn’t have been if it wasn’t for Napa River Inn’s spa manager, Jeanette O’Gallagher. Jeanette was the first person in North America to figure out how to mill the hard grape seed and pull droplets of goodness from its tiny body. Jeanette came up with her ideas to use grape seeds when she was looking for solutions to her own health issues. Fiercely determined to boost her immune system with alternative measures she was introduced to new research on grape seed oil. One of the leading advantages of Jeanette’s line of grape seed skin care items is they are milled to protect the nourishing properties of grape seed oil. This process works to provide the purest and most healthy oil to ensure lasting potency for each product. Widely used at spas across the country, Jeanette creates a special blend of lotions, soaps, and shampoos for the Inn. You will find generous sizes for use in every room. Besides bath products and lotions, Jeanette offers an extensive line of skin care, available at The Spa at Napa River Inn. Because it can be quickly absorbed into the skin and works to moisturize deeply while leaving skin irresistibly
smooth, grape seed oil has quickly become one of the most popular items on the skin care market. Nowhere else will you find grape seeds being used in such creative ways: bath teas from 100% milled grape seeds and beautiful Rosemary Mint and Passion Fruity body scrubs and exfoliating cleanser for the face. All locally inspired. Jeanette oversees spa services, as well as the charming retail store. She is as innovative with the physical therapies as she is with products.

Vintners Collective If you’re a wine enthusiast and are looking to focus on beverages and not food, then the Vintner’s Collective should spark your interest. Its unique new concept is simple: more than 25 local wineries from around the Valley are represented for tastings and shopping at one venue in a central downtown location. The tasting room happily hosts four tasting packages for a variety of budgets and experiences. From the “enthusiast pathfinder” package ($10; no appointment necessary), all the way up to the “aficionado trailblazer” package, which features rare, high-end, and highly sought-after wines (approximately $100 by appointment only), Vintner’s
Collective is an easy place to taste goods from several wineries at once without needing to hoof it all around town. Open daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. 1245 Main Street, vintnerscollective.com
Organized Tours If you would rather see how the magic happens, there are several ways to get around town from winery to winery without needing to drive. You can ask the concierge to arrange for a private driver, or you can join one of many high-quality organized tours. There are many options; some tours will reserve seats for you and
your party on a group tour bus. For a real splurge, consider a private guided tour by Sprinter limousine. Popular tour companies like Platypus Tours (platypustours.com) host several themed tours for small groups, taking you to three locally beloved wineries around town in one day for around $110 per person, including picnic lunch. Most wineries have additional tasting fees of $15 or so, which you will have to cover out of pocket. However, many wineries will happily waive the tasting fee if you purchase their products either by the individual bottle or in bulk cases. If cost is a concern, be sure to check in advance which ones waive their tasting fees.

A PERFECT PAIRING PF Wine Tours
After battling a brain tumor for almost nine years, during which time she had to give up her career as a stockbroker with UBS Securities, in 2009 Anjanette Prudlo met Massimiliano Fantucci, an Italian native whose custom furniture and restoration business in Napa was suffering heavily during the recession. A year and a half later, they moved in together as a melded family, with her two daughters and his two sons. Soon after, the couple began brainstorming career options. Starting a wine tour company seemed an obvious choice for a couple of reasons. First, the region boasts hundreds of wineries and tasting rooms. Second, they could offer tours in German and Italian (Anja being a first-generation German American), giving them an edge over their competitors. Third, Massi was born and raised in Florence, Italy, where wine and food are a way of life. In fact, in addition to learning the woodworking trade, Massi trained as a chef in Florence. In 1997, Massi opened a custom furniture and restoration company, Handcrafted Woodworks, and has spent 20 years designing, building, and restoring furniture for private homes and wineries.
While waiting out the long licensing process, Massi and Anja worked daily to increase their knowledge of local wineries by visiting as many as possible. When they offered their first tour, in April 2013, they’d personally visited almost 150 wineries in the Napa, Sonoma, and Russian River regions. Now married and having visited almost 300 wineries, they continue their hunt for hidden gems and awesome discoveries for their guests. Only about 1 of every 4 wineries makes their list. Their criteria? Amazing, high-end wines, value, gorgeous beauty/views/atmosphere, superior hospitality, and passion. Clients fill out a questionnaire, and whether the planned tours come from PFWT recommendations or the client’s own requests, Anja makes all the appointments needed and emails the clients an itinerary ahead of the tour. “We’re very picky which wineries make our list,” Anja said. “So if you or I think a winery from my list fits you, you will love it!” PF Wine Tours specializes in small, off-the-beaten path wineries, though it is familiar with the well-known ones as well. PFWT offers private SUV tours, with either Anja or Massi themselves behind the wheel. Or, if a client prefers, PFWT can stand in as
“designated driver” in a client’s own rental car – to keep rates down. With carefully customized itineraries, affordability and fun, the knowledgeable couple of PFWT are ranked #7 out of hundreds of companies in Napa alone on TripAdvisor. They also have 5-star ratings on Yelp, Google, and Facebook as well. “Amazing wines, amazing wineries, amazing tour guide” Jomac107 “Best Wine Tour Experience” Chelsea B. “Best Day Ever” Liz Hopfl

Where once there was a handful of mom-and-pop diners, today the area boasts 65 restaurants, according to the Downtown Napa Association.
Three multi-million dollar building projects – a hotel, an internet TV station featuring live cooking demonstrations, and the Culinary Institute of America’s new hub – are expected to draw even more businesses – and tourists. Part of downtown Napa’s popularity is due to the recent increase of vibrant businesses, including shops, entertainment, and wine tasting bars. The other part is due to celebrity chefs, such as Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto, moving in. So although you can still buy an In-and-Out Burger on your way into downtown, you may want to sate your hunger at the following restaurants instead.
• Morimoto Napa
• Celadon
Chef Morimoto is renowned for his Japanese take on familiar menu items. Try the oyster foie gras, Morimoto chowder, and the sea urchin carbonara but save room for a s'more, made with kuromitsu, or black honey, graham cracker, smoked soy chocolate mousse and toasted marshmallow. Cocktails are just as creative, from the Morimo-tini, a mix of vodka and sake, to the Brazilian melon party made with Leblon Cachaça, melon syrup, and tamarind-coconut soda.
Whether you sit in the dining room or the courtyard, you’ll feel as though you’re traveling through Asia or the Mediterranean when you bite into Celadon’s crispy braised pork belly with yuzu, or citrus, wasabi stir-fried soba noodles and sweet soy sauce or the Moroccan-braised lamb shank with raisin-andtoasted-almond couscous. Celadon has been featured in Wine Enthusiast Magazine, Wine Spectator, and the Los Angeles Times for its award-winning wine list ranging from a $10 pour to a $775 bottle of Opus One.

Nearly a decade ago, the New York Times said readers should make Angele Restaurant & Bar one of their destinations if they only have 36 hours to spend in Napa. More recently, the San Francisco Chronicle called it one of the Bay Area’s “Top 100 Restaurants.” If you’re craving coq au vin and other French dishes, try the truffled macaroni and cheese along with the roasted quail stuffed with chestnuts and brioche, and you’re bound to write your own rave review.
In 1995, the Culinary Institute of America launched its first satellite campus in St. Helena. The school offers continuing education programs for foodservice professionals, associate degree programs, and recreational classes. On February 18, CIA celebrated the grand opening of its downtown campus, the Culinary Institute of America at Copia. At the new location, you’ll find five-day cooking boot camps, a culinary arts museum, a store, and The Restaurant at CIA Copia. As you know from the movie “Dead Poets Society,” carpe diem means “seize the day.” At Carpe Diem in downtown Napa, you’ll want to seize the Carpe Diem burrata – i.e., mozzarella heaven – served with sea salt, tomato, and bacon jam on grilled bread. Other specialties include truffle fries with shaved parmesan and the ostrich burger with triple-cream brie and cherry-and-caramelized onion compote on a toasted brioche bun.

Your Guide to the 10 best Places to
Dine in Napa
• Kenzo
1339 Pearl Street kenzonapa.com Kenzo Estate owners Kenzo and Natsuko Tsujimoto, who have four restaurants in Japan, added a fifth to their inventory in Napa last November. The authentic Japanese restaurant features two pre-fixe kaiseki, or meticulously prepared multicourse menus and, of course, Kenzo Estate’s entire wine collection, including sake. Sit at the 10-seat cypress sushi bar for the complete experience, from preparation to presentation to directions on how best to enjoy your dishes.
• La Toque
1314 McKinstry Street latoque.com La Toque takes texture, flavor, and artful presentation to a new level. Try the Michelin-rated restaurant’s celery root sabayon with toasted brioche and grapes, the braised matsutake mushrooms, and the eggplant. The "Fairy Tale pumpkin tortellini" undoubtedly lured Hansel and Gretel to their fateful but satisfied end. Alternatively, you can order from the "core menu" or the nine-course "Chef’s
Table Menu" that enables you to try six dishes and double up on dessert. Trust La Toque to pair the food it prepared with the perfect wine – it’s the restaurant's specialty.
• Cole’s Chop House 1122 Main Street coleschophouse.com
Among other awards and reviews, Food Network ranked Cole's Chop House one of the top places to eat steak in the country. It praised the restaurant's USDA Prime 21-day dry-aged steak from Chicago as well as its black angus ribeye, filet mignon, side dishes, and wine list. Consequently, Cole's is a popular place to celebrate special occasions, so call ahead for reservations and be prepared to prowl the parking lot for a space. Once seated, your efforts will be well rewarded.
• The Corner Napa 660 Main Street cornerbarnapa.com
Don't let the name fool you. The Corner Napa is spacious and airy, allowing guests to dig into their duck confit grilled cheese without bumping elbows with the people

Meet
Ms. Laurie Gordon
Napa River Inn is pleased to introduce you to Ms. Laurie Gordon, our Chef Concierge. During your stay, we hope you’ll introduce yourself to her and take advantage of her exceptional skills and knowledge.
Laurie is a third-generation Napan and the rich heritage she shares with our town makes her the perfect “first stop” during your stay. She has extensive knowledge on Napa Valley wines, history, culture, and has some “tales to tell” about some of Napa’s notable characters, one of which was her grandfather, Samuel Gordon! In the 1920s and beyond he was “the talk of the town” with his entrepreneurial spirit as a real estate developer and for the beautiful buildings he built along First Street in downtown Napa. A 37-year hospitality veteran, Laurie graduated from UCLA with a degree in psychology. Instead of treating patients, Laurie chose to treat guests – to her expertise on all things Napa-related. It seems the concierge life was her calling, and she’s been known as “valley wise” ever since. Back in 1980, the “concierge” was a little known commodity. There were no handbooks on how to run a concierge department; there were few guests who even knew what a concierge was. With her “can-do” attitude, Laurie advanced her way to the peak of the profession by hand-picking her always eclectic staff, creating effective and ongoing training, educating the public about the concierge position and above all living and breathing Les Clefs d’Or’s motto of “in service through friendship!” Laurie came to Napa River Inn with 23 years’ experience as Chef Concierge at Silverado Resort & Spa. After leaving Silverado, she was cajoled by the owners of The Carneros Inn to be a part of the opening team at their much-anticipated Agri-chic hotel, where she became the personal liaison in Napa Valley and Los Angeles to many a celebrity during her tenure there. It was the hardest project she has ever worked on, but without a doubt the most rewarding! Laurie’s key to success has always been her genuine warmth, intuitive nature, and ability to canvas every corner of the Napa Valley to find and develop relationships with the most lovely vendors, vintners, and friends throughout the valley. Those same relationships translate into a rich, endless harvest of recommendations for you, our guest.
She was privileged to be one of the founding members of the USA section of Les Clefs d’Or, a prestigious international association of professional hotel lobby concierges. In 1982, she attended her first Clefs d’Or international congress at the Ritz in Barcelona where she met colleagues who became (and still are) her esteemed mentors. Thanks to their wise leadership, Laurie is now a mentor herself to many members entering the concierge profession today. Her passion, Les Clefs d’Or international is now 90 years old, and has more than 3,500 members from 46 countries around the world. The most recent Les Clefs d’Or international congress Laurie attended was in Dubai (2016). 700 of her “gold key” colleagues from around the world were there, including the press, Forbes and hoteliers representing international hotel companies such as Four Seasons, Starwood, InterContinental, Sofitel and more. First-hand travel experience allows her to share valuable information and make informed recommendations about destinations for her guests far and wide, whether it be for her regulars and even those she is just meeting for the first time. She also ensures that proper introduction is made with a particular concierge at their final destination. And more often than not, it is a colleague that she has shared a friendship with for decades.
THE CONCIERGE
A true “local” in every sense of the word, Laurie’s community involvement is testament to her love of the Valley. Two proclamations of which we here at the Inn are particularly proud that Laurie received were the inaugural “Angel of the Year” award from the Napa Valley Visitor’s Bureau and the inaugural “Hospitality Professional of the Year” award from the Napa Chamber of Commerce. Always philanthropic, she also served for 13 years on the board of the Lincoln Theater, an historic performing arts center that post renovation seats 1,200 people and offers exciting shows 52 weeks a year. Visit our lobby, where you’ll find Laurie and her esteemed colleagues, Susan and Cynthia working at their beloved desk! Please make sure to stop by and introduce yourself. Though we love our California-paced lifestyle, it won’t take you but a New York second to see why the Napa River Inn’s concierge team is indispensable and loved around the Valley for their professionalism, friendliness, and knowledge.

Q&A
Q&A with Laurie Gordon, Chef Concierge of Napa River Inn
How did you become a Concierge? What’s it like? Home for the summer, I was a lifeguard at Silverado Resort & Spa, and my General Manager at the time literally plucked me from the swimming pool because he felt strongly that I had what it takes to go into the sales. To get there though, he said I needed to pass the “concierge test” because he said “concierges always know everything!” His words, not mine. The rest, as they say, is history! I fell in love with helping people that very first day in the lobby, and I’ve been at a concierge desk ever since. Our profession requires teamwork, partnership, relationship builders, and grace under pressure. The best thing about being a Clefs d’Or concierge is
meeting people from all walks of life. I’ve made lifetime friends with so many of my guests and colleagues. It has also given me a very unique worldwide perspective. In my professional capacity as a Les Clefs d’Or member, I’ve been to upwards of 50 countries, and my travel experiences in their entirety have allowed me to make intimate and knowledgeable recommendations to my guests, friends and colleagues. For a concierge, every twist and turn is unexpected and exciting. Whether that means something extravagant, such as securing a suite during the Venice film festival for the owner of my hotel (I can never thank you enough, Serge Amalfatani - friend, colleague, and retired concierge - for making his wishes come true!) Or what now appears to be mundane (i.e., a Tesla to the airport), you
just never know where and when you’ll have to think “outside of the box” to help someone. If you had only one day to spend in Napa Valley, what would you recommend? That’s a great question. There’s so much to do here. It really depends on the day and what’s going on in the valley and hitting all the high points for the guest or family that you’re helping. Breakfast in bed is always a good way to start the day. Sweetie Pie’s Bakery, right here at the Historic Napa Mill, will deliver delicious croissants and a dose of coffee to energize you. Then, from here, you can walk over to the Oxbow Public Market. Stroll and shop for linens, spices, coffee, chocolate, books, specialty gourmet offerings and cookware. With a hired

Then hit the Silverado Trail and head to Joseph Phelps Winery. Enjoy a terrace wine-tasting and take in the spectacular views of our beautiful valley floor. Next stop, Regusci, for a visit to a “Ghost Winery,” which is our Napa term for old wineries from the Prohibition Era that have fallen into disrepair, many of which have been lovingly restored into working wineries. Definitely worth a visit! Then back to the hotel for a treatment at The Spa at Napa River Inn. Try the “Grape Love Body Polish,” which uses grapeseed oil and mill-crushed grape

After your relaxing afternoon, enjoy dinner on the premises at Angele (also known as the local winemaker hang-out) or Celadon (global comfort food) or take a short walk to Grace’s Table for seasonal, garden-fresh cuisine. Finish with a night cap at The Corner Napa. If you’re an adventurous diner and enjoy the limelight, have us make a reservation on your behalf at Morimoto, just the next block over from us. If you enjoy dining al fresco, stop on the way to pick up classic deli picnic foods and cheeses at Oakville Grocery. Afternoon activities might include a paddleboard lesson on the Napa River or a kayak for two, or bike rentals from Napa River Velo bicycles to navigate the vine trail. Finish your day with a classic burger at Gott’s Roadside, or pizza at CaMomi, and end the night with soft serve ice cream at Vintage Sweet Shoppe or enjoy the magic of hand-made Italian ice cream at Frati Gelato.

Q&A
Q&A with Laurie Gordon, Chef Concierge of Napa River Inn
Do you have a favorite vineyard? It really depends on the day and sometimes my whimsy. There are nearly 500 wineries in our valley, so it’s hard to have just one favorite. I try to learn a bit about my guests’ tastes, and then I tailor-make my recommendations, just for them. Do they enjoy full-bodied reds or small production wines? Are they more interested in the wine-making process or in the wine-tasting process? Altamura is a great choice for those seeking famous full-bodied cabs. I’ve been friends with Frankie (as I call him) Altamura since grade school, and it’s been a delight watching him become a world-class winemaker. Another fav, which is also family-run, is a visit to Swanson Vineyards as it guarantees so many magical moments while there. The personal attention at Oakville Ranch is always tried and true. Auberge du Soleil offers fabulous views while enjoying a “glass” or brunch on their terrace. Charles Krug is the oldest winery in Napa Valley, and it was also the first to open a tasting room. It’s recently been renovated, and it’s definitely worth a visit. Want to tour a vineyard on horseback? Napa Valley Horse Company can make that happen. Or try a taste of distilled craft spirits at Napa Valley Distillery (Oxbow Market), which is on the cutting edge of “cool.” And one can’t forget about what I like to call the ABC’s of wineries: Alpha Omega, Barnett, Beaulieu and the legendary Legh Knowles, B Cellars, Cakebread and Dolores and her gardens, the Carneros region in its entirety, Chappellet, Chateau Montelena – did you ever see the movie Bottle Shock!? Then there’s the Del Dotto family, Domaine Chandon and the mystique of Edmond Maudiere, Fleury Estate, Frog’s Leap, Grgich Hills, Ted and Laddie Hall (my personal Napa Valley heroes) of Long Meadow Ranch fame. There’s also Hall Rutherford and Hall St.
32
Helena on the valley floor, John Anthony, Inglenook, Kitchak, La Sirena, Luna, the Mondavi family, Newton, Odette, Peju and newcomer Liana, Pine Ridge, Pride Mountain, Raymond, Rudd, Rutherford Ranch, Saddleback Cellars, Schramsberg, Spottswoode, Spring Mountain, Tamber Bey, Trefethen, Vineyard 29, Chuck McMinn and his coconspirator, George Goeggel and all that is the Napa Valley Vine Trail – the newest “splash” and a miracle in the making! And last, but not least Whetstone Wine Cellars – living the dream, we love their family and their wines. What’s the best way to navigate Napa Valley? There are lots of great ways to enjoy wine country. Obviously, if you are going to be enjoying the fruits of the vine, it’s best not to drive. Leave that to us. There are tours for every taste and every budget. We can hire a car and driver on your behalf and, together, we can plan a custom itinerary. A first-timer? You can always join-in on a Platypus tour where you’ll visit three (sometimes four) charming backroads boutique wineries inclusive of a picnic lunch out on the tasting trail. Just another way to spend the day in our beautiful Napa Valley! Or purchase tickets and ride the rails. The Napa Valley Wine Train cars are original Pullmans (circa 1915) and all have been lovingly renovated with mahogany, brass fittings, and velvet opulence. Enjoy fine dining, fine wine, and fine vistas while traveling back in time to the heyday of rail travel. I see that Napa River Inn allows pets. What do you do to make them (and their owners) feel special? I love it when guests bring their “best friends” along. I’m never sure who

likes our amenities more – the pets or the owners! Dogs receive our VIP (Very Important Pet) treatment, which includes a custom-designed blanket with our embroidered logo, a place mat, and a food and water dish. The dishes are stainless steel, not sterling silver, but I’ve never had a dog complain yet. Here at Napa River Inn, we have a “no dog left behind” policy – which means dogs (or cats) may not be left unattended in guestrooms. But it’s never an issue, because we have a whole stable of reliable pet sitters who will come walk Rover and entertain him until guests return from their busy day. Pet sitting averages $25/hour, which means you can bring your dog and still enjoy your wine tours, too. Pet lovers should be sure to visit Fideaux in St. Helena, a great boutique that caters to our furrier friends, for freshly baked treats, toys, and more. Are there any secret, off-the-beatenpath, favorite things you like to do, and that you could recommend to guests? Hands down, Jessica’s Barn! Michael Savage, who used to be the San Francisco Symphony’s Director, has a home here in the Valley. He invites symphony members to come and play in his big ol’ wooden barn. You never know what you’ll hear, but it’s always magical and such a unique awe-inspiring treat to share music with fellow aficionados. It’s big enough to be an event, but still small enough to be very intimate.

Throughout the month of July in 2015, tourists were treated to a rare sight in Napa: a harbor porpoise.
It was first spotted near a resident’s boat dock about 10 miles south of downtown. Days later, it attracted a crowd close to the Third Street Bridge off Main Street. By mid-month, Napa Valley Register’s Facebook fans were uploading snapshots near the yacht club. Harbor porpoises, which are smaller than dolphins at 5 to 6 feet in length, began appearing in San Francisco Bay earlier in the decade after a 60-year absence. They vanished around World War II, when the area became a wartime port. NPR reported that they may have moved due to poor water quality. Now that their food sources have returned since the passage of the 1972 Clean Water Act, so have they.

Marine biologists believe this little guy got lost while chasing food, but it wasn't the only one. Daily tides affect the river up to Trancas Street, according to the City of Napa.

Downtown Napa: Vibrant and Enchanting
Napa has undergone an extensive makeover.
Less than 25 years after Europeans began exploring the valley in 1823, pioneer Nathan Coombs founded Napa, and former miller Harrison Pierce erected its first building – a saloon – at the corner of Third Street, near the river. A pair of general stores went up in 1848, but everyone except farmers abandoned Napa for Sacramento once gold was discovered there. Napa began to flourish after the first steamboat arrived from San Francisco in 1850, German immigrant Jacob Schram started the first Napa Valley vineyard in 1852, and a silver rush occurred in 1858. Despite a drought between 1853 and 1865, progress continued. Fruit and grain crops were farmed, cattle were raised, newspapers were printed, telegraph lines were lain, a government was established, a bank and churches were opened, and grapes were planted. Charles Krug, founder of Charles Krug Winery, reportedly produced 1,200 gallons of wine in 1858 with a tabletopsized cider press. Krug wasn’t the first to make wine in the valley, but in 1882 he became the first to open a tasting room in California.

Of course, you never have to wait for an event or a particular time of year to enjoy the best that Napa has to offer. Nor do you have to travel too far from Napa River Inn. Wine on First (1463 1st Street) offers flights and both by-the-glass and fullbottle service from a trio of Napa Valley wineries – pureCru Napa Valley, Jean Edwards Cellars, and J. McClelland Cellars. Calistoga
Mineral Water Worth the Mileage in Calistoga
Unless you looked up the filming locations for Adam Sandler’s movie “Bedtime Stories,” you probably never heard of Calistoga, California. But when it comes to vacation destinations, lack of notoriety has its benefits. After all, fewer tourists means more time to soak oneself in the natural hot springs. Samuel Brannan, the American settler, businessman, and journalist who founded San Francisco’s first English newspaper, opened The Hot Springs Resort in 1862. Brannan, who founded San Francisco’s first English newspaper, became California’s first millionaire after gold was discovered in the state. His fascination with Calistoga’s hot springs prompted him to put some of that money toward more than 2,000 acres of land, where he built a resort. Intent on turning Calistoga into the Saratoga Springs of the Pacific, he even built a railroad track to the town to make it easier for ferry travelers from San Francisco to get there. Today, a 30-foot diorama depicting his resort is one of the main exhibits at the Sharpsteen Museum, which Academy Award-winning Walt Disney Studios animator, producer, and “Pinocchio” director Ben Sharpsteen opened with wife Bernice in 1978. The museum connects to one of Brannon’s cottages, which was moved to the site and restored. You can visit the wellreviewed Washington Street museum from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. seven days a week for a donation of $3 per person. You can also experience Calistoga’s hot springs for yourself at a number of spas, Dr. Wilkinson’s being the most famous by far, but at the Baths at Roman Spa, located at 1300 Washington Street, you don’t have to experience them by yourself. The facility offers private mudrooms for couples. Lovers can also lie side by side for massages after immersing themselves in a mineral bath
filled with geothermal water that bubbles up from beneath the spa or a mud bath made from mineral water, volcanic ash, and natural peat. If you’d prefer to play in the mud first, hike the rocky 8-milelong Oat Hill Mine trail, where you’ll find wildflowers, fir trees, volcanic formations, and expansive views of Napa Valley. During the California gold rush, Oat Hill Mine was one of the primary producers of cinnabar, which makes mercury when processed, according to the Napa Valley Register. As the name implies, Oat Hill Mine trail once served as the route to the mine. For another historic hike, visit Bale Grist Mill State Historic Park. Located between Calistoga and St. Helena on Highway 29, it has a 36-foot-tall water wheel-powered grist mill that was built in 1846 and grinds grain into polenta, cornmeal, spelt, buckwheat, rye, and whole-wheat flours that can be bought for a donation. After purchasing your pancake fixin’s, hike the 2-mile roundtrip trail between Bale Grist Mill State Historic Park and Bothe-Napa Valley State Park. While in Calistoga, animal lovers and conservationists should slip into Sonoma County to see Safari West — a 400-acre wildlife preserve where animals roam a natural habitat. Owners Peter and Nancy Lang will introduce you to 90 African species, from flamingos to rhinos. You’ll also learn how you can help improve the outlook for endangered creatures. 3 Ways to Take a Bite out of Yountville
To the uninitiated, Napa looks like one place.
But those who’ve been here before know the valley stretches 30 miles from southeast to northwest, and the towns that straddle Highway 29 from one end to the other merit exploration -- especially on an empty stomach. Yountville alone boasts about a dozen restaurants along Washington Street, which parallels St. Helena Highway and is only a quick, 15-minute drive from downtown Napa. The town was named after fur trapper George Calvert Yount, the first permanent Napa Valley resident and the first Yountvillian to start a vineyard here, so you won’t have to look far for a winery. If you haven’t ventured to Yountville yet, here are three great gastronomical reasons to go. Contact your concierge, who will be happy to help you with reservations at these highly sought-after venues.
The French Laundry
Bottega Napa Valley
Redd
Named for the two-story cottage’s former incarnation, the French Laundry serves just what you’d expect -- French food, but it comes with a flair fit for royalty. You’ll feel like King Henry VIII as carefully choreographed dishes are delivered to your table in perfectly calculated succession. Many diners have described the multi-course meal, presentation, and service as a bucket list experience.
Like Keller’s Michelin-rated restaurant, which has earned such titles as Best Restaurant in the Americas and Best Restaurant in the World, Chef Michael Chiarello’s Bottega Napa Valley has found its way onto Forbes’ and Esquire’s Top 10 and 20 lists, respectively.
Praised for its cuisine in Town & Country and its wine service in Wine Spectator, you can’t go wrong at Redd. Chef Richard Reddington helped open Spago Beverly Hills as its sous chef before perfecting his skills at San Francisco restaurants Jardiniere and Chapeau, where the San Francisco Chronicle’s food critic called him a rising star. During his four-year tenure as Auberge du Soleil’s executive chef, he was voted ‘Best Rising Chef’ in San Francisco Magazine. He moved on to Masa before opening Redd in 2005.
If you can afford the finer things in life, put the French Laundry at the top of your Yountville itinerary and order the oyster and pearls (pearl tapioca with island creek oysters and white sturgeon caviar) or the Royal Ossetra caviar (citruscured Pacific yellowtail, cherry belle radishes, garden shiso and yuzu crème fraîche). The seasonal menu rotates daily, but Chef Thomas Keller’s creations never disappoint.
Try the Emmy award-winning former Food Network host’s house-cured prosciutto and salumi with Teleme, Montasio, and Chianti Pecorino cheeses, Sicilian almonds, and vine-dried raisins, the polenta under glass, or any of his pasta dishes, and you’ll understand why you needed reservations. You’ll find Bottega on the Vintage Estates, one of Napa Valley’s oldest wineries. For a relaxing, romantic evening, enjoy a bottle from Chiarello Family Vineyards next to one of the restaurant’s two oversized, stone fireplaces.

Have you heard the old adage, “Where there’s great wine, there’s great culture?”
Such is life in Napa Valley, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. Our guests join us from all over the world for a variety of reasons (beautiful wine country being chief among them), but in recent decades our surrounding area has awakened into a veritable renaissance of art, music, theater, and culture. The Napa River Inn is beautifully situated at the crossroads of the arts and culture scenes, and we’re eager to share the artistic bounty of the valley with you.

Presently, 14 vibrant contemporary sculpture pieces by 14 artists from five states are displayed throughout the Center City River Mill district. Three of the rotating pieces are located right here in the

Just steps behind the Napa River Inn’s main structures, inquisitive walkers will stumble upon a spectacularly crafted, full-sized fountain covered in mosaic glass and tile. Located on the Riverbend Plaza, the breathtaking mosaic piece was created for permanent public viewing by Alan Shepp, a local artist and craftsman whose many public art pieces are showcased all over Northern California. Its intricate glass and ceramic tile illustrations depict the history of Napa Valley’s founding and development, paying homage to the Hispanic and Chinese laborers who worked to build the Napa community from the ground up. The work is titled “Ars Longa Vita Brevis” – roughly translated from the Latin as “life is brief, but art endures” – a quote from the Aphorismi by Hippocrates. The museum’s three galleries are “dedicated to local history, world-class art exhibitions, and a showcase space for local artists.” Rotating and permanent collections highlight local visual artists in the mediums of painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking, film, and crafts. Temporary exhibitions planned for the 2017 season include the muchanticipated Embracing Imperfection: Contemporary Expressions of Wabi Sabi, “an exhibition that explores the practices
of contemporary artists Adam Chapman, Jim Melchert, and Leah Rosenberg through the lens of the traditional Japanese aesthetic and philosophy of Wabi Sabi.” The exhibition will be on view in the main gallery from January 21, 2017 through April 30, 2017. Hours are Wednesday–Sunday, 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. 55 Presidents Circle napavalleymuseum.org When you stay with us at the Napa River Inn, you will experience our commitment to bringing local art and culture directly to our guests. And for those days when you’re prepared to explore the valley, you can be assured there are plenty of enriching cultural activities to experience.

of the most must-see in Napa
What makes the Napa Valley so alluring is the lush countryside and its enduring bucolic appeal, but beyond its idyllic vestige is something much deeper.
It is a world full of tiny treasures, offering an endless array of adventures at every corner. Arguably one of the best destinations in the United States, Napa Valley proves to be a haven worthy of its many visitors. This inherently refined community is deeply rooted in its own storied history, one that really got its start with the founding of the Charles Krug winery in 1861. Subsequent
wineries were to follow, transforming Napa into a mecca for wine lovers. Between its history, the landscape, and its overall, undying allure, Napa has a distinctly original flavor. Up ahead, take a look at all the ways to dive into this sweeping paradise. We guarantee there’s something for everyone.
1. Bale Grist Mill State Historic Park Bale Grist Mill State Historic Park maintains a unique charm. It sits on the site of a water-powered grist mill dating back to 1846. You’ll see evidence of its past as a place where early California settlers were known to congregate. Constructed from local materials like Douglas firs, coastal redwoods, and native stone, the mill’s appeal is both distinct and enchanting. To round out your visit, head up the road to the adjacent Schramsberg Vineyards, known for their unparalleled sparkling wines. 3369 St Helena Hwy
