Welcome to Bible by the Beach 2016!
TRUSTEES
This programme highlights all that is going on over the next 4 days – plenty to enjoy and benefit from, always with the Bible as our foundation pointing us to the Lord Jesus. We pray that all who attend will be blessed by the weekend, finding time for fun and fellowship alongside thought-provoking and encouraging teaching and the opportunity to sing praise to God together. It isn’t too late to invite local friends to the free Evening Celebration on Sunday and, if you enjoy the weekend and are helped by it, please tell others and bring more next year!

God calls us all to be DISTINCTIVE – at home, at work, in all areas of our lives. As individuals and churches He desires us to live out the gospel, becoming more like Jesus. That’s what Bible by the Beach 2016 is all about. We hope that this weekend will enable us all to see more clearly God’s purpose for our lives as we wait for Jesus to come again! So as we meet together ‘let us encourage one another’. We look forward to welcoming you and thank you so much for being with us. Every blessing in Christ, DAVID BOURNE Chair of Trustees

SEMINAR STREAM A
SERMON ON THE MOUNT
HOW JESUS CHANGES US TIM LANE
Life’s four biggest questions are: Where did I come from? Where am I going? Why am I here? How do I live?
Jesus’ sermon given on the
mountain answers the last of these questions. Jesus’ teaching stands in stark contrast to the
current “I get what I want” dominating attitude. The Christian is called thus to be salty in a
decaying society and light in a dark culture. It is
a sobering sermon, deeply challenging to every believer. Jesus leaves us in no doubt that we must press beyond merely hearing him, and do
SATURDAY 11.30 / CONGRESS THEATRE / PART 1 SUNDAY 14.45 / CONGRESS THEATRE / PART 2 MONDAY 09.30 / CONGRESS THEATRE / PART 3 Before you can look at your life you need to see the big picture of change. This will be the main focus in the first of the series of 3 seminars. In part 2 we will look at conflict as an example of how change happens and in the final part we will look at personal application. Tim will guide us as we think about a specific area in our own lives and how change can take place.

LIVING IN A BROKEN WORLD PAUL MALLARD SATURDAY 11.30 / FLORAL HALL / PART 1 SATURDAY 14.15 / FLORAL HALL / PART 2 MONDAY 09.30 / FLORAL HALL / PART 3 Christians love to wear masks. We pretend that we are okay, when we are struggling to follow Jesus faithfully. We suffer because we are human and we suffer because we are followers of a crucified Saviour. In these sessions we will be honest about our struggles. We will also be honest about the sufficiency of God’s grace and then explore some of the blessings that buffetings bring.
I love gardening – I could watch people do it for hours! Like a healthy tree, our local church needs to be well-rooted and well-nourished if it is to be fruitful, and so this seminar series is a short introduction to Biblical horticulture! We’ll take a look at God’s purpose for our churches, the foundations for healthy church growth, the essential fertilizer that nourishes maturity, the pruning that might be needed or the undergrowth that might need to be cleared away, and the kind of fruit we might expect to see. To put it more simply: how do Christians grow up? How do Christians work together? If growth means change, how do we manage this? And how can our church – small or large – be productive for the cause of Christ? We’d welcome your participation.
Seminar 1 What are the challenges facing the church in the modern world. We will consider the massive cultural shifts of the past few decades. How has the attitude, values and beliefs of media and culture affected world in which we live. This session will provide an opportunity to consider the rise of secularism.
Seminars are NOT repeated. Stream A has 3 parts (Sat am, Sun pm and Mon am). Stream B has 2 parts (both Sat pm). If you are unable to attend everything that you wish to hear please make use of the Media Stand (Floral Hall) to order CDs, downloads and memory sticks of the Bible Readings, Celebrations and Seminar series. Get the whole weekend on USB for just £25!
Seminar 2 Don’t lose heart! The rise of secularism is a door of opportunity. We will consider how we communicate the gospel in a way that will avoid misunderstanding and make connections to the age in which we live. Jesus Christ remains the single most important personality in our age and we will reflect on how best we can represent him. Seminar 3 The Bible is under attack as out of date, irrelevant and inaccurate. We will consider evidence that has emerged in the past decades that has not only confirmed the reliability of the Bible but helped to explain otherwise troubling moral issues and events. We not only need to communicate Christ in a secular culture but we need to communicate the basis of truth itself.

Everyone worries; and while it may become a familiar companion in our lives, it never becomes a welcome one. Wouldn’t it be great if there were a way to worry less, or not to worry at all, in the midst of our struggles? Over the two seminars we will begin by answering the question what is anxiety? before moving on to look at how we can grow in grace as we face our anxieties.
Seminar Part 1 (Growing healthy churches) focuses on the crucial importance of Acts 16 in reaching people with the gospel. Key insights will help any Christian and church to align with the Holy Spirit’s gospel purposes in giving us that amazing chapter in our Bibles. Seminar Part 2 (Enabling churches to continue growing) will look at some of the threats and unexpected blockages to gospel-driven growth. By utilising Acts 6, important church leadership and membership actions will be pinpointed which will help churches overcome what may be holding them back.

PASTORAL CARE AND MENTAL HEALTH EMMA SCRIVENER
The bible talks a lot about being ‘In Christ’, and people sometimes talk about faith-union. But haven’t you sometimes wondered what exactly this means? Is it just pious mumbo-jumbo? Does it matter? These talks aim to clarify our heads and fire our hearts about what it means to be in Christ, both for our salvation (talk 1) and what it means to walk the Christian life (talk 2) and why it is wonderful to be able to say as Christians ‘We are in Christ’.
SATURDAY 14.00 / COLLEGE CHAPEL / PART 1 SATURDAY 15.45 / COLLEGE CHAPEL / PART 2 There are not hierarchies of Christians – there are only sinners saved by the mercy of Jesus. Sometimes however, we separate discipleship into two halves: “normal Christians,” (those with manageable problems) and those who are in need of “professional help.” In these sessions we will learn that every Christian is radically messed up and every Christian is offered radical grace and transformation in the gospel. These seminars will help those struggling with mental health issues and those who care for them. However, they will also explore pastoral care for everyone, because we all need the same Lord.
