SATURDAY 09.30 / DEVONSHIRE PARK THEATRE

MONDAY 09.30-10.30 / ALL SAINTS CHURCH PART 3 GENDER THEORY, GAY MARRIAGE AND OTHER CONTEMPORARY CHALLENGES TO BIBLICAL FAITH.

SUNDAY 16.00 / DEVONSHIRE PARK THEATRE

The sexual revolution, rooted in a powerful cultural narrative of authenticity and freedom, has brought about radical and far reaching changes in attitudes to sex, marriage and gender. To the modern mind, biblical teaching no longer seems plausible or realistic. Accused of holding beliefs that bring distress or even harm, Christians today find themselves cast as an ‘immoral’ minority. In these seminars, we will look at the claims of contemporary culture through the lens of the Bible. In our challenging context, what does the bible really teach about what it means to be sexual and made in the image of God? What does evidence from the social sciences have to say about human flourishing? We will explore together how Christians who hold to biblical teaching can tell a better story about sex, marriage and singleness - a narrative capable of winning hearts as well as minds.

Faithful in a busy world Lee McMunn SATURDAY 11.45 / DEVONSHIRE PARK THEATRE / PART 1 SUNDAY 14.15 / THE BIRLEY CENTRE / PART 2 MONDAY 09.30 / DEVONSHIRE PARK THEATRE / PART 3 In a busy world we often feel exhausted, overwhelmed and discouraged. Where can we find refreshment when there is so much to do? How can we say ‘no’ to the good so we can say ‘yes’ to the best? How can we share the gospel when those around us are rushed off their feet and never seem to have a minute? Or in short, how can we be faithful in a busy world? These seminars will delight your heart, inform your mind and prepare you to live out your faith in the place God has put you. As we gaze at our faithful God we will be equipped and enthused to serve him more wholeheartedly as we wait to see our Lord Jesus Christ face to face.

Faith in a material world Graham Beynon SATURDAY 11.45 / HOLY TRINITY CHURCH / PART 1 UNDERSTANDING FAITH SUNDAY 14.15 / HOLY TRINITY CHURCH / PART 2 KNOWIING OUR MATERIAL WORLD MONDAY 09.30 / HOLY TRINITY CHURCH / PART 3 LIVING BY FAITH IN A MATERIAL WORLD “We live by faith, not by sight” says the apostle Paul. But we live in a world surrounded by what we can see and touch. Our culture only believes in what it can see and thinks that what we can touch is all that there is. So how do we live by faith? How do we live out spiritual realities in a material world? How will that change our discipleship and our vision for life?

Faith for the fight Simon Vibert SATURDAY 11.45 / COLLEGE CHAPEL/ PART 1 STAND FIRM IN YOUR FIGHT AGAINST THE DEVIL SUNDAY 14.15 / COLLEGE CHAPEL / PART 2 PUT TO DEATH THE SINFUL NATURE MONDAY 09.30 / COLLEGE CHAPEL / PART 3 RESIST THE PULL OF THE WORLD I am grateful to those who mentored me as a new Christian, 35 years ago, not least, in how they taught me to keep going in the Christian life for the long haul. I worry that we don’t disciple a new generation in this way. It is a matter of urgency that we relearn how to grow disciples. These seminars will look at the biblical theology of the fight against the world, the flesh, and the Devil. We will seek help from conversational partners – C.S. Lewis, John White, J.C. Ryle, William Gurnall, and John Owen. Finally, we shall see how we might have faith for “The Fight” – practical steps to live as God’s soldiers and servants, in enemy occupied territory, whilst we await our final liberation. 7

SATURDAY 14.30 / COLLEGE CHAPEL / PART 1 DON’T BE NAÏVE (GET WISDOM) SATURDAY 16.30 / COLLEGE CHAPEL / PART 2 DON’T BE AFRAID (BE COURAGEOUS)

In these seminars we will be looking at what we can expect as followers of Jesus. We’ll see that even Christians are messy, but Christ’s faithfulness changes the way that we see others and ourselves.

Things are changing fast. The technology available today is way beyond what I grew up with. There are two wrong responses. Firstly, we might embrace technology in an unthinking and undiscerning way. In the first seminar we will take an honest look at the benefits and dangers of our digital world. But secondly, we can be too suspicious of all things digital. There are great opportunities for us as Christians. In the second seminar we will carefully explore how we can use technology for the glory of God and the good of others.

In the first session we will explore how Christ meets us in our sin and suffering. In the second session we will look at how we can share Christ’s love with others in their own sin and suffering.

SATURDAY 16.30 / HOLY TRINITY CHURCH

Seventy three percent of Christian young people said that the thing which had most influenced the way in which they thought about faith in Jesus, was their family. Parents and Grandparents have unprecedented opportunities to share and model the gospel to children. This seminar will encourage and equip us to live and speak for Jesus in our families. A practical seminar looking at how families can raise the next generation to be faithful followers of Christ.

MUSICIANS

We are pleased to welcome EMU Music to Bible by the Beach 2018 who will be leading our music worship throughout the weekend led by Philip Percival, Liv Chapman and Alanna Glover. Following the Friday evening celebration there will be an informal time with EMU music who will introduce new songs and talk about EMU music ministry.

Established in Sydney, Australia and now based in Oxford, Emu Music has a global ministry teaching church leaders and musicians about what a Biblical approach to singing looks like, in theology and practice. Their ‘Word In Song’ conferences balance Bible teaching with hands-on training. Similarly, Emu publishes a range of songs for adults and kids which are Christ focused, Bible centred, and aimed at the contemporary church. www.emumusic.com

The Friends of Bible by the Beach are vital to the event. As Trustees it is our duty to ensure that the conference is sustainable and has the long term strategic back-up and support it needs. We employ 2 part time co-ordinators and a team of volunteers and it takes a whole year to plan and publicise the event.

Being a Friend involves two simple commitments: 1. Giving an annual or monthly donation to support the event (If individuals or couples each gave a minimum of ÂŁ10 a month this would be a significant step to a secure financial foundation). 2. Praying regularly for Bible By The Beach In addition to knowing that your donation is enabling the conference to grow each year you will receive a free talks USB soon after the event, a Friends badge and regular newsletters throughout the year.

NOTES

Could you help us next year?

Thank You The Trustees are grateful for the support given by www.greyjonestudio.co.uk and the technical support to Devonshire Park Theatre and Halls by Southby, Ofilms and Avolites. Technical support to other venues is supplied locally.

An event like this could not take place without our 150+ cheerful and willing volunteers, many of whom come back year after year. If you live close to Eastbourne and would like to be involved in kids work, stewarding or admin then do please come and see Tess or Denise at the Welcome Desk. In return you can join us for delicious free meals whilst on duty and free passes to the conference in your spare time. We would love to welcome you on board!

Thanks also to Conference Eastbourne and Eastbourne Accommodation Bureau
