Symbian Software Development Then and Now: Will Nokia Be Celebrated? Nokia, once a well known name in the smart phone industry, seems to have lost in the clamor of Android and iPhone. Shares in Nokia close down lower as analysts digest the fourth quarter results, which are slightly better than calamitous numbers of the first three quarters. As Android and Apple took over, users started familiarizing with the two giant ecosystems. The Symbian Story The motivation factor for Symbian’s existence was to establish the position similar to Microsoft but on miniature devices. Symbian vendors demanded the ability for independent differentiation; therefore, the user interface was technically separated from the core operating system. Symbian was distributed across three main vendors: Nokia for series 60, Sony Ericsson for UIQ and MOAP used in the Japan-based phones. Symbian ruled the mobile market for about half a decade, when mobile was an expensive commodity for geeks and Apple fan boys. It introduced a closed system with little or no chance to customize. However, in the era of Symbian application development, people were awestruck with functions of multi-tasking, memory protection and multi-threading. Symbian software development constituted of personal interface, library, innumerable frameworks, etc. Originally, Symbian OS was quite close to the PC operating system that operated on smart phone and mobile devices. Over years, Nokia became the driving force behind Symbian. It effectively took the platform across the globe. It then attempted to show Symbian’s performance into the smart-phone and high-end feature-phone market; However, it failed in competing with Android and Google. Nokia found no reason to hold back. It ventured with windows 7 transiting its employees and Symbian maintenance into the hands of Accenture.

The Present Day Situation While Nokia focused on harmonizing its multiple software platforms, both iOS and Android were busy developing a strong platform and network effects that encouraged the evolution of web-based applications. With the introduction of better user interface, open source platform and strong ecosystem supporting vast range of complex applications with an ability to control people’s daily lives, Android and Apple are the two unbeatable platforms. Although Nokia’s new Lumia 800 has been successful in selling off its devices to 2 per cent of Europeans, it is still not in the position to compete with the existing giants. Does Symbian exist? Symbian does exist. Although Nokia trussed up with Windows, it never gave up on Symbian OS and Symbian application development. Apparently, Symbian’s new version “Belle” will be out for a release in February 2012. This will help existing users to upgrade their devices with all new features. The unexampled Nokia Belle composes of three to six home screens, widgets for email, music, favorite contacts and a pull down menu for notifications. Nokia claims that the upgrade is significant; however, its position being recuperated is a dream yet. Lumia 800 showed a positive impact on the market. Nokia market recovered from 27 percent in 2011 to 38 percent now. Through better marketing strategies and integration of attractive features, Nokia can be celebrated once again, but Symbian application development in India needs a miracle.
