Adopting Your Grandchild Do not ignore the grief The adoption of your grandchild is indeed a joyous and happy one. Yet, the internal process for all involved can be a challenging one, especially for your grandchild. Children may have a difficult time accepting the fact that they will never return to live with their biological parents again. It is necessary for you, as an adoptive parent, to allow your grandchild time to grieve the loss of connection with their birth parents. Your grandchild may very well need time to experience the stages of grief before they fully transfer attachment. Adoption can be an emotionally difficult time for a child. No longer will kids be able to hope for possible reunification with their biological parents. Change is difficult Instead, the termination of rights by birth parents might produce feelings of grief and loss within them, fears they had kept bottled within themselves during the length of their stay in your care. Kids may even feel that they have betrayed their biological parents as they legally take the adoptive grandparents’ last name. You may find that your grandchild revisits the stages of grief again, both during and after the adoption process. Indeed, it can be an emotionally traumatic time for all involved. Do not ignore the questions Even though your grandchild may have lived in your home, they will likely re-experience feelings of loss during the adoption process. Allow them to discuss their feelings of grief and loss with you as you listen attentively to them, validating his feelings and emotions; answer them as honestly as you can. Questions are very important to them, for both their well-being and future. They need to know that their past is important, and that they are now a full-fledged child of yours and are loved just the same as all the others in the house.

Adoption Tax Credit The credit is paid one time for each adopted child, and should be claimed when taxpayers file taxes for 2016 for adoptions finalized in 2016, there is a federal adoption tax credit of up to $13,460 per child. The adoption tax credit is NOT a refundable credit, which means taxpayers can only get the credit refunded if they have federal income tax liability. Please go to the NACAC(North American Council on Adoptable Children), http://www.nacac.org/taxcredit/taxcredit2016.html

HELPING KIDS UNDERSTAND BULLYING Kids who know what bullying is can better identify it. They can talk about bullying if it happens to them or others. In order to be considered bullying, the behavior must be aggressive and include: • An Imbalance of Power: Kids who bully use their power—such as physical strength, access to embarrassing information, or popularity—to control or harm others. Power imbalances can change over time and in different situations, even if they involve the same people. • Repetition: Bullying behaviors happen more than once or have the potential to happen more than once. Bullying includes actions such as making threats, spreading rumors, attacking someone physically or verbally, and excluding someone from a group on purpose. It’s important the kids know ways to safely stand up to bullying and how to get help. • Encourage kids to speak to a trusted adult if they are bullied or see others being bullied. The adult can give comfort, support, and advice, even if they can’t solve the problem directly. Encourage the child to report bullying if it happens. • Talk about how to stand up to kids who bully. Give tips, like using humor and saying “stop” directly and confidently. Talk about what to do if those actions don’t work, like walking away. • Talk about strategies for staying safe, such as staying near adults or groups of other kids. • Urge them to help kids who are bullied by showing kindness or getting help. • Model How to Treat Others with Kindness and Respect: Kids learn from adults’ actions. By treating others with kindness and respect, adults show the kids in their lives that there is no place for bullying. Even if it seems like they are not paying attention, kids are watching how adults manage stress and conflict, as well as how they treat their friends, colleagues, and families. If your grandchild is being bullied please contact school officials.
