Welcome TO THE GRIFFITH REGION

Griffith is one of Australia’s most vibrant and cosmopolitan centres. With a population of 26,000, Griffith exudes a rich blend of cultures and traditions. Today, more than seventy nationalities add to our cultural tapestry including Italian, Indian, Afghani and Pacific Communities. Our adventurous and industrious people have developed the huge agricultural sector of vineyards, orchards, cereal crops, pasture and rice over the past 100 years and then added value through manufacturing, retail and innovative technology. Griffith is the agricultural powerhouse of the Riverina and services a population of 52,000. The Riverina is one of the most diverse and productive regions in Australia, contributing over $5 billion annually to the national economy. One of Griffith’s most endearing features is Banna Avenue, an attractive tree-lined main street, stretching several blocks. With an enviable strip of enticing

boutiques, gift shops, galleries and Italian cafés, it’s a wonderful place to spend many hours. Window shop with a gelato or relax at an outdoor café table with a glass of local pinot grigio and watch the passersby. Life in Griffith revolves around food, wine, sport and family. The annual festivals are a wonderful time to visit, as they showcase our local food and world-class wines, friendly people and colourful cultures. Griffith offers a tremendous range of sport and has many lovely parks and recreational grounds to walk, run or fly a kite. Road cycling, soccer, rugby, tennis, golf, 24-hour gyms, an indoor pool complex and yoga are just some of the popular recreational pursuits of the locals.

TAKE THE TIME TO DISCOVER THE GRIFFITH REGION; YOU’LL BE DELIGHTED AT WHAT YOU FIND.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF COUNTRY The Griffith Region is located in the heart of Wiradjuri Country, the largest indigenous nation in Australia. It reaches from the Blue Mountains in the east, to Hay in the west, north to Nyngan and south to Albury. This area is also known as “the land of three rivers”. Griffith City Council would like to acknowledge that the Wiradjuri people are the traditional custodians of this region, and have been the custodians for many centuries. We pay our respect to Wiradjuri Elders past, present and future. The names of many Griffith streets and nearby towns are Aboriginal words. Here are a few you may come across and their English meaning: Banna - rain or water; Barellan - meeting of water; Benerembah - man with eloped woman, Jondaryan - a valley, Yenda - swampy place.

Great Food The foodie scene in Griffith is gaining momentum with the return of young entrepreneurs growing family businesses and investing in new ones. Chefs are crafting menus sympathetic to seasonality and what’s produced locally; the dishes change daily, are creative, and simply delicious.

Good food has always been at the heart of Griffith, and the city has an enviable reputation for excellent pizza, pasta and gnocchi. With more than 40 eating houses in Griffith the range is extensive and all occasions, from a special night out, through to a quick bite with the family, are covered.

I’VE ALWAYS HEARD ABOUT THE RIVERINA REGION BEING THE FOOD BOWL OF AUSTRALIA BUT TO REALLY SEE IT, MEET THE PEOPLE, HEAR THE STORIES, AND TASTE IT, WAS AN UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE. JENNIFER LAM, I ATE MY WAY THROUGH

The Griffith Region is a truly diverse food bowl of Australia!

Agriculture is at the heart of the city, and the stats are impressive: The region grows 90% of Australia’s rice and prunes. We grow the sweetest navels and are the largest citrus region in Australia. Home to great orange juice, craft beer and Australia’s largest wine region - in fact there are so many kilometres of trellised vines they could lap Australia’s coastline three times! Griffith wineries export over $800M of wine per year and Griffith is the home of Yellow Tail and De Bortoli Noble One.

a significant chicken meat supplier and producer of olive oil, truss tomatoes, quail and melons. Even the popcorn you buy at the movies is grown just down the road! Southern NSW is also known for producing supreme malting barley for beer making in both Australia and overseas. The Griffith Region is a truly diverse food bowl of Australia! With great local food producers, wineries and passionate chefs, it is little wonder Griffith is fast becoming the new destination for foodies.

The region recently planted one million hazelnut trees for chocolate maker Ferrero. Other growth industries include Murray Cod, almonds and walnuts. Griffith is also

WINEMAKER OF THE YEAR 2016 AUSTRALIAN WOMEN IN WINE AWARDS HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN LIVING IN GRIFFITH AND MAKING WINE? I am a born and bred Griffith girl. I actually grew up on a rice farm in Widgelli. I have been making wine in Griffith for about 12 years. WHAT MAKES THE RIVERINA/ GRIFFITH WINE REGION SPECIAL? The majority of wineries in the Riverina are family owned, which means we are here for the long term. We aren’t working towards a quarterly announcement for shareholders - therefore there is more freedom to focus on the grand plan.

99 SPICES Best Indian restaurant in town. Delicious tastes of India right here in Griffith. Fully Licensed. Dine in or Take Away. Open Tuesday to Sunday from 5.30pm - 9.30pm 453 Banna Avenue Griffith / 02 6962 4929

WINES TO LOOK OUT FOR AT THE MOMENT? Alternate varieties from all the wineries are changing perceptions. Our climate is well suited to some Mediterranean varieties (Pinot Bianco, Montepulciano, Aglianico, Nero D’Avola to name a few), when we take the time to understand the variety we can produce some outstanding wines. Try anything from the ‘Calabria Private Bin’ range.

YOU ME HAPPY GRIFFITH TEA HOUSE A popular local breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea spot. 14 Hanwood Road Hanwood / 02 5924 1726

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR TOWN? Life is easy and simple. I love the fresh air, my kids can ride to school, play outside and I don’t have to deal with traffic to get to work!

ANY TIPS FOR VISITORS …MUST DO’S Grab a Bertoldo’s coffee and biscotti and visit the wine museum - it is a great snap shot of our history and the mural of old labels is worth a look. Following this Visit Calabria Wines cellar door (of course!) And if you’re going to eat; my top picks are La Piccola, Zecca and Limone. 14

Litlle Italy THE VERY ESSENCE OF GRIFFITH IS ABOUT FOOD, WINE, FRIENDS AND FAMILY

More than 60% of the people of Griffith claim Italian heritage, and the early migrants brought with them their viticulture and market gardening skills and their passion for food and cooking.

Griffith’s main street is dominated by Italian cuisine, all making fabulous pizza (try the rocket toppa), pasta and gnocchi and of course great coffee and delicious treats (don’t miss the gelato and cannoli). At the top end of town sits La Piccola Grosseria, an iconic delicatessen stocking genuine Italian goodies, and across the road down a ramp, is La Scala, a friendly, family owned restaurant which opened in 1977. This place is a Griffith institution…try the scaloppine and cassata! On the edge of town is Codemo Smallgoods, this family owned salami maker has been perfecting salami since the 1950s, open for tastings Monday through to Saturday.

Old traditions like salami making, preserving olives and sauce days are continued enthusiastically by younger generations. In fact, the culture of homemade salami is on the increase, with the number of entries growing year after year in the annual Festa delle Salsicce – Salami Festival held every year in August.

Durif AND MORE

ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF WINEMAKING SIX GENERATIONS OF FAMILY BUSINESS THOUSANDS OF ACCOLADES... AND COUNTING

No trip to Griffith is complete without a visit to some of the city’s wonderful wineries. The region’s wine industry has a strong heritage of Australian pioneers and Italian immigrants who saw the potential of the Mediterranean climate, Murrumbidgee Irrigation scheme and the rich red soil of the Riverina. The region has been known mostly for its internationally acclaimed botrytis and fortified wines, and for producing great quality table wines. Today the Riverina is

becoming highly regarded for its alternative red wine varieties such as Durif and Montepulciano and Italian white wines Pinot Grigio and Vermentino. From large establishments to boutique outfits; the friendly cellar door staff will guide you through the tastings of their regional and award winning wines. Visitors are welcome and well catered for with many wineries offering picturesque gardens with picnic tables and barbeque facilities.

19

WINE STATS... All our Griffith wineries are family owned businesses, with more than half identifying Italian heritage. Home to six of Australia’s top 20 largest wine companies and 7 of Australia’s top 15 wine exporters. More than 12 ½ million cases of wine are exported to more than 50 countries around the world every year - that’s approximately 34,000 dozen per day ….. in fact shipping containers fill the (almost) daily wine train headed to the Port of Melbourne. The biggest wine export success story and global phenomena YellowTail calls the small village of Yenda its home. 62 varieties are grown in the region and annual grape production is typically in excess of 300,000 tonnes! The region is home to one of the fastest wine bottling lines in the world, capable of 36,000 bottles an hour!

History of Griffith

IN 2016 THE CITY OF GRIFFITH CELEBRATED 100 YEARS OF SETTLEMENT AND GROWTH. The Town of Griffith was proclaimed on 4th August, 1916, and was named after Hon. Arthur Griffith, who was the New South Wales Minister for Public Works, 1910 – 1915. It was designed by Walter Burley Griffin, the Chicago architect who designed Canberra. Like Canberra, his design for Griffith featured a distinctive radial pattern with wide tree-lined streets, ring roads and parks. World War I held up the building and settlement of the new town, but by late 1919 settlement had begun. The population of the area received a boost as returned soldiers settled on the irrigation farms under government sponsorship. Some businesses were reluctant to leave the thriving Bagtown to relocate in the new town which was some considerable distance in the days of horsedrawn transport. However, by early 1920s, Bagtown had been abandoned, and all that now remains is the small Bagtown cemetery. The first farms were made available in 1912, and the influx to the area increased as potential farmers from as far afield as Sydney, Broken Hill and California responded to the Government’s vigorous advertising campaign. Many Italian migrants were drawn to the area to pursue the type of farming familiar to them in their homeland. More recently, other nationalities have arrived creating a city rich in culture and diversity.

Griffith has ventured a long way from its early Bagtown years, from the introduction of irrigation, which is still the life blood of the area, to being proclaimed a City in 1987. It’s hard to believe that the Griffith region was dismissed by the explorer John Oxley in 1817 as being ‘uninhabitable and useless to civilised man.’ Now a thriving oasis, thanks to the development of the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area in the early 1900s, the region hosts an abundance of agriculture and processing industries and is an important food bowl of Australia.

GRIFFITH PIONEER PARK MUSEUM Step back in time, as you enter this delightful open-air museum. Home to forty original and recreated buildings which are furnished with an extensive collection of artefacts to provide a glimpse of what pioneering life was like in the early 1900s. Visit cottages, the school and Taylor Bros store. There are many collections, including machinery, such as the innovative Sunshine Harvester, Australia’s first mechanical rice harvester. The water and wine building and Italian museum provide interesting stories and personal accounts of early days in Griffith. Set on 11ha amongst native bushland, the manicured grounds are a popular place for weddings and functions. Action Day occurs once a year, every Good Friday, and is a great time to visit the Museum. Steam-powered engines are whistling away, the blacksmith is hammering horseshoes and horse and coach rides are the mode of transport.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN LIVING IN GRIFFITH? AND HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN INVOLVED IN YOUR INDUSTRY? I grew up near Griffith and attended Griffith High School. I only moved away for a couple of years for work and study and I have been back in Griffith for 11 years now. I have been involved with growers in the industry since 2006 but become a grower in 2009 and then the Industry Development Officer in 2013.

WHAT MAKES THE GRIFFITH REGION SPECIAL It’s the diversity, culture, people and food. The availability of water has meant that Griffith and surrounds can thrive on the agricultural and horticultural sectors. These sectors attract all types of people from all cultures which add to the vibrancy of our city. I’m looking forward to my kids experiencing the cultural diversity that I experienced as a child. WHAT IS A CURRENT FAVOURITE WAY TO INCORPORATE PRUNES IN YOUR COOKING ANN? Look out for prunes. They are delicious and versatile and of course, locally grown...in fact the region grows 90% of Australia’s prunes. My favourite dish at the moment incorporates locally grown prunes and citrus - Prune and Ricotta Hotcakes with Orange, Mint and Prune Salad.

Family Fun Griffith Region offers many areas to explore as a family. Make sure you visit City Park, a picturesque park on the main canal; a great place to walk, picnic, BBQ, climb and play. It is home to the tallest climbing frame in the Southern Hemisphere and in 2013 was voted by Sydney Telegraph as one of the Top 10 Playgrounds in NSW! Equipped with a water splash park, be sure to pack the kids’ togs. There is also a double flying fox and a lovely walking track along the canal, ideal for stretching legs, or scooter riding, after hours of travel.

Continue on to Centenary Walk in neighbouring IOOF Park and take in the stone sculptures. A gift to the City of Griffith from the people of Griffith to commemorate 100 years of progress, these seven beautiful sculptures were carved from 20 tonnes of granite by some of the best hard stone sculptors in the world. The sculptures reflect the theme ‘Griffith’s cultural diversity and the meaning of water’. The Aquatic Centre with three heated pools is another great family attraction as is Lake Wyangan for paddling, water skiing, fishing and picnicking.

Altina Wildlife Park, located on the banks of the Murrumbidgee River near Darlington Point, is a wonderful local attraction. The personalised guided tours with a zoo keeper are entertaining and informative. You’ll love this open air zoo-safari, the curious animals that come and say hello and Blu the Clydesdale horse that plods along pulling your cart.

48

The Hermit’s Cave Lookout and trails are also well worth exploring. A hermit called Valeri Ricetti called the caves his home from 1929 to 1940 and created stone walls, steps and pathways linking the chapel, garden and main cave areas. Visitors today can marvel at the remarkable site he created. Do wear good walking shoes as the terrain is rocky.

Sport is instrumental to country living and Griffith is no exception with pretty much everything on offer. You’ll find golf, 24-hour gyms, tennis, netball, hockey, running, swimming, yoga, cricket, soccer, touch, rugby, Aussie Rules, karate, dance, basketball, bowls, cycling, karting, water skiing, sailing and much more.

Griffith City Library is a fabulous, lively community hub. You’ll find great books, magazines, movies, computers, a brand new youth space and free WI-FI. Plus the Library Team actively run programs from baby bounce through to tech savvy seniors...pop in and see what’s on. 49

Outdoor Fun

The very best way to explore the area is on your bike. The open flat countryside is pretty and inviting; you’ll ride past vineyards and wineries, orange groves, almonds and prune orchards. There are various loops to suit rider ability from beginners through to seasoned professionals. The roads are quiet and well maintained and there are plenty of great spots for coffee at the end of the ride! Mountain biking is also catered for with offroad shared trails located on the outskirts of Griffith, along the rocky escarpment of Scenic Hill Reserve, and along the McPherson Ranges. There are fire trails to explore with the kids through to tracks for the committed mountain biker. Collect bike maps from the Griffith Visitor Information Centre. Griffith Cycle Club is a social, active club, visit griffithcycleclub.com If running is your thing, join in the weekly “hill run” with the Feral Joggers, a family friendly club griffithferals.org.au If you like bushwalking, we have you covered. Cocoparra National Park is a dramatic and rugged place, a haven for bushwalkers, birdwatchers and nature-lovers.

With a landscape that’s vividly alive and always changing it offers well maintained walking trails and attractive picnic areas. Visit after rain to see the waterfalls and creeks in full flow and come in spring to see the wonderful variety of wildflowers; orchids, wattles and tea tree bring extra vibrancy to the land. Other seasonal delights include the nesting season of the majestic peregrine falcons. Located just 34km from Griffith, pick up picnic supplies from La Piccola Grosseria or Beelbangera Store and make a day of it.

Day Trippin’ MAKE GRIFFITH YOUR BASE AND SPEND A COUPLE OF DAYS OUT AND ABOUT EXPLORING THE REGION.

Head south to Darlington Point and enjoy the walks, wildlife and attractions in and around the Murrumbidgee River. Head east towards Narrandera and you’ll pass Tubbo Station, one of the great properties and woolsheds of the district. Tubbo Station was sold in 2010 for $40 million to a nearby farmer. In its heyday it was a 100 blade stand shed….making it one of the largest in NSW. While in the region, visit the Southern Cotton Gin and learn about this progessive new industry.

and popping-corn - the very popcorn that you enjoy in cinemas around Australia! Popcorn is processed locally at Freedom Foods, an Australian owned company committed to making allergy free foods, just one of a few factories around the world ‘free from’ wheat, rye, barley triticale and nuts. Head North East of Griffith, out through Yenda and the country changes to broad acre farming - open plains, gentle rolling hills and large-scale wheat, barley and canola production. Griffith was designed by Walter Burley Griffin as a garden city. Griffith features extensive tree lined streets, community parks and colourful private gardens. There are several beautiful private gardens, on the outskirts of town, which are open to visitors throughout the year.

Twitching GRIFFITH IS AT THE CROSSROADS OF BIRD MIGRATION PARTICULARLY FOR EASTERN AND WESTERN SPECIES SO IT IS A VERY GOOD AREA FOR TWITCHING.

bird images by Yvon Brown

Within the Griffith City area itself, there are very accessible sites where our local birds can be seen at close range. Perhaps the most notable of these is the Scenic Hill and Golf Course areas where Major Mitchell’s Cockatoo and other parrot species are common. The Lake Wyangan and Campbell’s Swamp area is also worth visiting for water birds and further afield, Cocoparra National Park and the adjoining Binya State Forest have some of the best birding sites in the whole of the Riverina – a definite must for all keen bird watchers. The Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area is also noted for the large number of Australasian Bittern that come to the area in the spring to the rice farms and adjoining irrigation channels to breed. Late October through to January is the best time to look for these secretive birds – early morning being the best time.
